Book Description

This book is written for teachers and caretakers of young children from infancy though age eight who exhibit behavioral and developmental disabilities or conditions, whether or not they have been diagnosed. This wealth of information helps the teacher successfully plan programming for the child individually and in a group setting. The reader will welcome the unique format of the book. Disabilities and conditions are defined in straightforward language and all of the material is presented in an easy-to-follow column format. Columns outline three areas: 1) behaviors and their associated conditions; 2) other conditions with similar behaviors; 3) and, what action to take or not to take when certain behaviors and symptoms are present. Everytime this book is updated, I buy it. Anyone who works with children birth to five or is involved in the field of early intervention will find this book practical and relevant . It is a perfect combination of theory and practice written in an easy to read style and format. Want to know about classroom strategies for a child with vision impairments..?It's in there. What about working with para-educators? You'll find it. Need to know about adapting materials for infants in the home? You'll find that too. This book is a must for the experienced and the inexperienced teacher, home visitor, early interventionist, teaching assistant, etc. I use it as a textbook with my graduate education classes and as a personal resource when working with children and families. The resources included in the book are excellent and useful for anyone wanting to learn more about working with young children with special needs.

Well organized, easy to use reference.......2000-08-10

This book offers much needed support to child care providers who are caring for special needs children or who wonder whether the child they are caring for has a special need. It is designed in an easy to use format: 33 exceptionalities are included (such as asthma, epilepsy, learning disabilities, abuse, etc.) with 3-5 pages of information on each one. The layout is in chart form with a spiral binding, so the book can be left open to the exceptionality you wish to review. Under each category the authors address the following: Behavioral Characteristics, What Else Could It Be?, and Recommendations. Additional resources are provided at the end of each category.

From the author: EDUCATORS AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS regard play as a primary occupation of childhood, which in the case of children with special needs has not been well studied. The aim of this descriptive study was to observe the free-play behaviour of children with special needs in both special education and mainstream education settings. The Revised Preschool Play Scale and Lunzer Scale of Organisation of Play Behaviour were used to observe and record short play samples of 12 children with special needs, aged 48 to 84 months, in both educational settings. Results suggest that developmental play skills remained constant between the two settings. This study highlights the strong developmental foundations provided by play as well as advocating for the importance of play assessment in school-based therapy.
