This book makes me sad that I was not born and raised in NC.......1999-07-15
Through prose, pictures and poems, this book gives one the "feel" of truely being a North Carolinian. Even if you have never visited the state, you can laugh, cry and dream as Charles Kuralt paints picture words of his home. A lovely relaxing read.

Book Description
In the twentieth century, industrialization transformed the Piedmont Carolinas from a poor, largely agricultural and backward region into one of the most vibrant and attractive areas of the nation. While many things played a part in this transformation, one indisputable factor was a reliable and economical source of electricity as provided after 1904 by what became Duke Power Company.
This book covers the history of Duke Power from its foundation up to 1997. Unlike most of the investor-owned electric utilities in the United States, which were controlled by giant holding companies or investment banks, the Duke Power company was financed largely by a local family, the Dukes of Durham, who had made their fortune in tobacco and textiles before turning to the electric-power business in the early 1900s. J.B. Duke speculated that development of hydroelectric power would draw business industries such as textiles to the rural South and reinvigorate its economy. His power company did that and more, lasting through the struggles during utilities regulation and labor organization, harnessing of nuclear power, continuing to diversify its operations into the 1990s. Robert F. Durden has chronicled Duke Power's contributions to the rich economic diversity of North and South Carolina and its effect on the people for whom it has provided power for almost 100 years.
This, then, is the story of a distinctive electric utility that early on took and held a leading place among the investor-owned utilities of the nation and its effects on the economic life of the Carolinas.
Customer Reviews:
A bit scholarly...........2007-09-10
Lots of data, but perhaps too much. The book did an OK job of giving the history of the Duke Power Company, but leaned, in my opinion, a little too heavily on stats from the annual reports. It made for dry reading from time to time.
I would be interested in seeing a follow-up from 1997-2007.
For a piece of this puzzle, check out "Continental Reach: The Westcoast Energy Story" by Peter C. Newman. Duke acquired Westcoast in 2001.
Engrossing, unique, comprehensive, and "reader friendly".......2001-10-14
Robert Durden's Electrifying The Piedmont Carolinas: The Duke Power Company, 1904-1997 is the inside story of how industrialization in the form of the Duke Power Company changed the Piedmont Carolinas from a poverty-stricken land into a popular and economically successful place. One J. B. Duke speculated that hydroelectric power would bring textile industries to the rural south and recharge the local economy; the rest is economic history. Electrifying The Piedmont Carolinas is an engrossing, unique, comprehensive, "reader friendly", and highly recommended regional American history that spans nearly all of the 20th century.

Book Description
This book is a departure from the traditional school public relations text. It not only provides a solid conceptual and research base in public relations for school leaders, it also demonstrates how these concepts can be practically implemented and put to good effect in the school systems.
Exercises and concepts are drawn from school life. Concepts are presented, developed, and applied. Case studies that conclude most chapters are based on actual experiences.
For anyone interested in public relations and the politics of education.
Customer Reviews:
Practical textbook.......2000-07-08
Public Relations for School Leaders is a useful combination of theory and practice. The authors dicuss public relations in the broader sense of building a sense of community both within and without the school itself. They use the case study technique to present practical applications, and the case studies are quite well done. The authors do not always distinquish clearly between a case study and a secton called administrative practice, but that presents no real problem to the student or the teacher.
The final two chapters on building a community relations plan are overly technical and too complicated. However, overall, this is a well written text which will be of use in a graduate program for school administrators.

Book Description
This popular text features a rigorous yet practical approach to the difficult dilemmas that so often arise in school administration. Using case studies to illustrate particular ethical issues, the authors cover such topics as: standards, assessment and evaluation, equal opportunity, multiculturalism, religious differences, due process, freedom of expression, personal liberty and authority.
Updated to address today's emphasis on meeting standards and raising test scores, the new Third Edition features:
* New cases that discuss current issues such as zero tolerance policies and integrity in reporting data.
* A revised chapter addressing the difficulty of focusing on standards while also dealing with competing demands, such as respecting the professional judgment of teachers, turning schools into learning communities, and engaging parents and members of the larger community in school life.
* Additional materials that refocus the discussion of legitimate authority and democracy on accountability and personal liberty.
The Ethics of School Administration, Third Edition is one of a set of books in the Teachers College Press Professional Ethics in Education Series. All of the books in this series will help educators and administrators to examine and reflect on the ethical dilemmas and controversies that are a normal and routine part of educational practice.

Book Review.......2007-04-10
Great book if interested in becoming an ethical leader. There ares some really good ethical situations and solutions presented by the author that will help any professional in thier leadership pursuits.
No Easy Answers.......2000-10-20
This book has several important themes for educational leaders. Chiefly they revolve around two ideas-- considering what is best for an individual in light of what is best for an institution. I read this book as the Minnesota Gopher basketball situation was emerging, so it created a great deal of dialogue in our class. In addition, several scenarios appear in the book that create interesting atmospheres for discussion. My one criticism of the book is that it could have developed more of an ethical decision making model. Overall, a good book for graduate students pursuing an administrative position.

Book Description
As any school principal or adminstrator can tell you, the responsibilities of school leadership can take a person from inspired moments to crisis in an instant. How does a school leader with good intentions preserve a healthy sense of self in the face of a crisis which in the best of times challenges the self, and in the worst of times can lead to deep wounds of the heart? How can good leaders minimize the impact of these crises and remain open to learn and grow from these difficult experiences? These are the questions at the heart of the stories contained in The Wounded Leader.
Through compelling stories that illustrate many of the common dilemmas faced by school leaders, the authors highlight the many paths to healing, and show how sometimes the most painful experience can be an opportunity for growth.
"All leaders incur wounds. The Wounded Leader enables us to understand our wounds, learn from them....and begin to heal." - Roland Barth, Founder of Harvard Principals' Center
"Not only is the book full of fresh ideas and new insights but it is a fun read. It is not the usual leadership book that reads much like the other leadership books but stands out as an original contribution...easily presented and scholarly without being pretentious." - Thomas J. Sergiovanni, Center for Educational Leadership at Trinity College, San Antonio, Texas
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reading for school principals.......2007-09-23
Ackerman and Maslin-Ostrowski have carved an important niche for themselves in the world of Educational Leadership literature. They do a masterful job weaving stories of leadership trials and tribulations while relating them to a well-considered framework for this study.
A fully-detailed explanation of the qualitative study for this work is included in the appendix. The book serves as a valuable resource for anyone involved in qualitative research, providing an excellent example of how this is done.
Beyond its value to Education Leadership academics, it is a valuable read for principals who have suffered wounds of their own. It might serve to relieve the sense of separation that is often felt by leaders suffering from various emotional crises or self-doubts suffered on the job.
I highly recommend this book for academics and school leaders alike.
An important, redemptive, eminently practical book!!.......2002-04-21
"The Wounded Leader" is a wonderful new work for school leaders--however embattled we/they may find our/themselves in any particular context or at any particular moment. It is an eminently wise, provocative book, whose thesis is amply documented and very well illustrated by the various core narratives it offers its readers.
"The Wounded Leader" is about the healing power of stories and story-telling. For me, its subtitle gives a better sense of what this book is about: "How Real Leadership Emerges in Times of Crisis." Drawing from a diverse array of inspired sources (from Heifetz and Kegan and Gardner and Bennis to Parker Palmer and Daniel Goleman, e.g.), Ackerman and Maslin-Ostrowski masterfully synthesize an analysis of "how school leaders respond to and make sense of their wounds." Stressing the meaning-making and redemptive power of narratives, the authors show how the stories we tell ourselves and each other about the challenges we face ultimately inform and reveal who we are. The most successful leaders, they imply, are the most authentic ones. "Leadership," they write, "has been described as the capacity to be totally and utterly oneself, to be able to show up fully, to express oneself, and to share this self with an organization that one cares about and wants to influence. If this is the case, then wounding at its worst means leaving the self outside the school, becoming a hollow stranger to oneself and one's leadership altogether."
By framing "crisis [as] an emergent occasion for transformation," Maslin-Ostrowski and Ackerman reveal how we can be changed and tempered enough to learn and grow from our leadership wounds. Its fundamental message is thus profoundly affirmative and reassuring. Moreover, the book (at less than 150 pp.) is a slim (i.e. user-friendly!) volume written in readily accessible prose, enlivened by many aptly chosen narrative anecdotes. I recommend that educational leaders have a copy handy to review and refresh themselves at all times--either on our bookshelves at work or on our bedside tables at night--in order to help us regain our bearings whenever our leadership going gets toughest.

Book Description
Presents new practices and ideas for mentoring women for school leadership positions.
Coloring outside the Lines critically looks at mentoring from the perspective of women who have been historically marginalized in school leadership, and grounds itself in a variety of experiences, including those of women school leaders of color. Using a feminist poststructuralist framework, the authors deconstruct the mentoring of women within the culture of K-12 public school administration in which they work. Providing arguments that mentoring has been and can be discriminatory, the authors explore it as a vehicle for transformation and change in education leadership rather than abandoning it completely.
Customer Reviews:
Differences in mentoring men and women.......2001-07-16
This is an excellent book for anyone looking for a mentor, thinking about becoming a mentor, or reviewing a college or school program involving mentors. Although the view point is mentoring for women of color, the study and examples make us review what makes for excellence in mentoring men or women, of color or of the dominant culture. We intend to analyze and review our whole mentoring system in graduate programs for administrators after reading this study.
