5 out of 5 stars Trade stats 2003.......2004-01-23

China is now America's third largest trade partner. In 2003, the US did $400 billion of trade with Canada, $240 billion with Mexico, and $180 billion with China. Japan's trade with America amounted to $170 billion, Germany under $100 billion, and Britain $75 billion. Five of America's top ten trade partners are Asian: China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Malaysia (surprise). Only three were from Europe: Germany, Britain, and France.

Trade growth between America and China is extremely fast. Within a decade, maybe even in five years' time, China will replace Mexico to become America's second largest trade partner. By 2025 - perhaps before - China will be America's number one trade partner.

5 out of 5 stars China: Trading Giant.......2004-01-17

The 2002 trade statistics are very instructive. In total (exports + imports) merchandise trade, China did $621 billion, about 6% of the world total. That might not sound like much until you consider that Japan's share is only 8%. Indeed, if the EU is counted as one unit (thus intra-EU trade is not counted), then China is the world's fourth largest trading nation, after the US, EU and Japan, in merchandise. China's 20% a year growth means the country will overtake Japan's #3 position in two to three years.

If both goods and services are counted, then China did about $702 billion of trade in 2002. That's a lot less than America's $2,382 billion. (But Japan's figure is only $922 billion.) Since there are no figures for extra-EU trade in services, China was, in both goods and services, the world's SIXTH largest trader, after the US, Germany, Japan, Britain, and France, in that order. China can beat Japan in no more than three years if it continues this phenomenal rate of growth.

So that leaves China as the world's number three trading nation, after the US and Germany, OR after the EU and the US, in a couple of years. (China's growth in services trade is a strong 13% - services trade is a lot smaller than goods trade for all countries except Luxembourg.)

Not a bad performance for a country which only 25 years ago did next to no trade with the outside world.

The fervor with which people have dubbed our era the Information Age--an age to be dominated by those who master the mysterious art of "continuous learning"--is amazing. Yet amidst this unprecedented overflow of information, good old brain skills are needed for not only sorting through info but interpreting and applying it wisely.

That's the purpose of this compact and easily digestible "learning handbook." Its authors, a professor of higher education and a former teacher of human resources management, reassure us we can learn anything we need to know, be it new career/tech/computer skills, subjects we hated in grade school, or how to change a light bulb--presumably if we first "learn how to learn." From there, they introduce us to seven key "ways of learning": behavioral (learning new skills), cognitive (learning from presentations), inquiry (learning to think), using mental models (problem solving), collaborative (group learning), virtual reality (improving performance), and holistic (learning from experience.) The final section of the book is an overview of places to find the info and knowledge we're looking for--from the old-fashioned, bricks-and-mortar library to the newfangled browse-and-click Web.

If you're looking for a hands-on text to beef up your learning skills (complete with those use-your-own-experience self-tests and worksheets we all snicker at yet find so fun and invaluable), this isn't it. Although Managing Your Own Learning offers some general examples to illustrate its theories, it does far more bland lecturing than engaging (so much for learning by doing). What's more, the closing section on how to use libraries, the Internet, and other research tools is fairly simple-minded (on libraries, to wit: "The card catalog has been replaced with an online catalog accessed through a computer station...." No foolin'?) But if you're looking for a clear, concise survey of some of the major learning theories of the past few decades, translated out of the academic gobbledygook of their creators and into plain English with quick-summary sidebars and bulleted-list breakdowns, this is a fine book (it sort of reads like an introductory text for aspiring K-12 teachers). --Timothy Murphy

                    Book Description

In today's rapidly changing workplace, learning is more important than ever before. But many people don't understand how learning takes place and how to manage the process. This book shows readers how to analyze their previous learning, design an action plan for future learning, expand their educational opportunities, and use libraries and the Internet effectively in order to become a proactive and perpetual learner.

Managers and trainers rely on James R. Davis and Adelaide B. Davis' book on training strategies, which the authors now have adapted as a personal self-help guide to learning. Although they touch briefly on underlying learning theories and present examples of learning from diverse academic fields (i.e. psychology, sociology, philosophy and communications), this is primarily a step-by-step manual. It begins with a brief self-assessment, guiding you to examine your strengths and weaknesses and to decide what you want to learn. Then, the authors explain how and when to use each of the seven major approaches to learning: behavioral, cognitive, inquiry, mental models, collaborative, virtual realities and holistic learning. They also suggest the best ways to learn in each category. Their well organized book lists major principles, enumerates rules, and provides a summary of each chapter. We [...] recommend this individually directed manual to those who wish to make the most of the time they spend absorbing new information.

Very systematic approach of teaching learning how to learn.

Part one : motivate you to learn "Preparation for learning" Part two : teach you to learn ""Seven ways of learning" Part three : practise your learning "Maximizing Learning"

The look and feel are very good. You can find out the editing of the book made you read the book very comfortable.

Taj is cool. He plays basketball, has lots of friends--and he has asthma. His life is going just right until he collapses on the court. If Taj and his coach had been more aware of the warning signs of asthma, Taj could have saved himself a trip to the hospital.

Illustrated with photographs from the filming of a video starring Danny Devito and Nia Long, Relieve the Squeeze demonstrates the danger of ignoring symptoms. Using a strong, teen-friendly voice, Peggy Guthart Strauss gives tons of important information--including a description of an asthma attack; a list of resources for asthma sufferers; suggestions for tracking medication schedules; and ideas for "asthma-proofing" the house--right alongside an asthma rap!

The number of asthma sufferers in the U.S. has increased 75% in the last ten years. The Draw-A-Breath Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing everyone's awareness of asthma, was created in response to shocking statistics like these.

5 out of 5 stars Every Servicemember Should Be Issued This Book.......2001-10-28

The Armed Forces Guide to Personal Financial Planning is a must read for soldiers, sailors and airmen. The book begins with chapters on basic personal finance and walks through sections on buying big ticket items (cars, houses, etc..), investing, and planning for retirement. Written uniquely for service members and the different tax and pay considerations they should account for, this book is an invaluable addition to any military bookshelf.

Michael Meese is the new Deputy Head of the Department of Social Sciences and former Director of Economics at West Point. Bart Keiser is also a former Director of Economics at West Point. The Social Sciences faculty is also in the process of writing the 5th Edition, which should be coming out in a few months; so if you can wait, you'll get a more current version. But if you are in the military and are considering major changes to your financial situation in the near term, this book is well worth the investment.

I highly recommend this book for all service members.

                                Book Description

Everyone’s got stuff, but between school, work, sports, music, and the social scene, today’s teens really have a lot of stuff. Usually, it’s crammed into an overstuffed backpack, a skimpy school locker, or lost in a huge pile on the bedroom floor. This step-by-step guide to getting organized helps teens take control of the clutter. First, readers learn how to deal with whatever obstacles prevent them from being organized. Next, they learn how to systematically organize the Big Three — school, time, and space. The school section includes instructions on how to set up binders, notebooks, and a great study space. In the time chapter, get practical advice on managing hectic schedules, plus a template for creating a personalized daily planner. In the space section, learn tried-and-true techniques that transform bedrooms from war zones into peaceful retreats. With detailed diagrams for organizing everything from computer files to personal time, Where’s My Stuff? helps readers establish time- and clutter-management skills that never go out of style.

The chapter called "School Stuff" had so many great ideas to get organized for fifth grade. It showed you 3 ways to organize your papers and notes.
