      Book Description

This four-part overview of electronic commerce offers a more thorough and technical view of the subject than many recent books on the subject. The book provides a balance of theories, applications, and hands-on material. It is divided into four parts: Electronic Commerce Basics, Electronic Commerce Supporting Activities, Implementation and Management Issues in Electronic Commerce, and Appendix and Glossary.
The book's chapters begin with introductions of leading companies with significant e-commerce expertise and at least two small case studies. They include 10 or more hands-on exercises, encouraging readers to explore and analyze sites, and a list of key terms and bibliographic citations. They conclude with 25-30 review questions and 6-10 projects for further investigation.

*Offers a generalist's overview of the field and its major players for people with little or no technical background
*Every chapter starts with an industry profile and two information boxes, which serve as case studies and point to practical applications
*Projects and hands-on exercises conclude each chapter

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable, basic primer.......2001-11-09

Hossein Bidgoli's Electronic Commerce: Principles and Practice is a comprehensive reference and analysis of a phenomenon that has globally revolutionized economics as we know it: e-commerce, the buying and selling of goods and services over the Internet, potentially to anywhere in the world. Among the many specific issues addressed by this fantastic guide are marketing and advertising on the World Wide Web, security issues, legal and tax issues, and how to build a successful e-commerce site. Projects and exercises to test your understanding conclude each chapter. The text's wording is straightforward, deliberately geared toward people who have had little or no experience with the Internet, and clear enough for the lay person to easily understand; anyone with a little spare time can use Electronic Commerce to teach themselves the same basic knowledge offered in entry-level seminars for hundreds of dollars of tuition. Electronic Commerce covers everything except how to create a webpage in HTML or write programs with specific computer languages/softwares, and is an invaluable, basic primer for anyone who is new to the art and skill of doing business over the Internet!

        Book Description

Management Communication, 3/e by Hattersley and McJannet offers a comprehensive, well-researched solution to teaching management communication. This text and casebook includes essential coverage of effective writing and speaking principles. It aims to help the reader master the full range of skills required of a successful manager. Most of the eighteen end-of-chapter case studies were developed at Harvard Business School where Dr. Hattersley headed the Management Communication Department and where Dr. McJannet taught (under her married name, Linda McJ. Micheli). The cases put the reader in the role of decision maker and communicator in actual business situations. While the text emphasizes practical communication skills every manager needs to master, it also includes full chapters on electronic communication, corporate ethics, audience analysis, meeting management, giving and receiving feedback, choosing media, style and tone, intercultural communication, and business and the press. The two concluding chapters provide two style manuals, the first on writing and the second on speaking, through the use of graphics and group presentations. Each is designed to be cross-referenced throughout the course and serve as a valuable resource for readers to refer to throughout their careers.

                  4 out of 5 stars Economics:Principles and Practice.......2000-09-27

Clayton's book is probably the best of an okay batch. After teaching high school economics for 14 years, and having used Clayton for roughly 8 of those years, I have found the book useful. The problem I have with the book is its non standard sequence of economic topics. This is a result of California State curriculm standards not Clayton. The author makes the best out of a bad situation. Consequently I teach the material in the sequence I prefer. This is okay while teaching supply and demand, and other micro issues. When I hit macro economic subjects it just falls apart. I have to cobble together bits and pieces of chapters to get a sequence resembling anything like a standard college sequence of topics;measurement (national income accounting, inflation, and unemployment), circular flow, determinants of aggregate demand,...etc. But of the text on the adopted list I prefer it.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great purchase!.......2007-09-09

This book is a must-have for anyone interested in becoming a library media specialist. It is an excellent source of information and practically required by the ALA, since that is who co-wrote it. It is also absolutely necessary if you're taking the Library Media Specialist Praxis test. A lot of the questions come from this book.

                  5 out of 5 stars Just what I needed.......2006-11-12

I needed this book for a class. It had what I needed to meet the requirements for the course. I received it quickly and at a reasonable cost.

5 out of 5 stars Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning.......2005-10-08

I had to purchase this book for a school library class I was taking. It's an excellent resource for all school librarians. I found the writing style to be very clear and very thorough in explaining the role of school librarians.

4 out of 5 stars Information Power validates school programs.......2000-05-30

Information Power, generated by the American Library Association, lists and describes the standards for a good school library media program. Unfortunately, the standards are written as many standards are...not extremely precise and easily misunderstood. However, if the entire book is utilized, the standards are explained in detail with examples of proficiency at each level. For example, the Nine Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning are listed, and then details are given as to whether a student is acquiring a Basic, Proficient, or Exemplary level. This book is meant to be used as a handbook for creating a good program, rather than reading for pleasure or information at one sitting. If used properly, it may help set up an exemplary school media center program.

While the standards seem to be the initial focus of the ALA, the real usefulness of the document comes into play when the additional chapters are explored. The real meat of the program comes in Part Two, entitled Building Partnerships for Learning. The importance of collaboration, leadership, and technology are described within the media center program, and are given a place of respect throughout this second section. Additionally, collaborative teaching is given a high place of honor, and is, in fact, written into the goals described for a media center specialist. This section continues by including ways in which information should be accessed by patrons and delivered by the library media specialist. It is nice that the ALA didn't describe the exact methods for information access and delivery because it allows the document to be ever changing. Instead a more general Principle 1 is given, "The library media program provides intellectual access to information and ideas for learning." (p. 83). This states what is important, yet allows for the professional to find the method by which information is accessed. Additionally, the document takes the professional school librarian and sets goals that can be adapted to the specific user. Finally, goals are set forth for the school regarding the expectations of program administration, which requires a professional or certified librarian to be a part of every school (which may increase the need for even more jobs in this profession!). The references are an important addition as well as they are relatively up-to-date and important sources for a librarian to look for information.

Overall, the book nicely sets forth a comprehensive plan for a school library media program, whether at an elementary or secondary level. While the standards and principles may get rather weighty, the information behind them is important and useful.

I like this book -- there is lots of great information, but the author has a tendancy to drone on and on sometimes before getting to a point and sometimes after getting to a point. Nonetheless, the information is priceless -- the reader just has to dredge his way through, pulling out the important information as he reads.

3 out of 5 stars Info Lit is not just for Librarians.......2005-08-09

You would think from reading this book that librarians are the only professionals interested in information literacy and that information literacy is only the ability to use the library and its resources whereas true information literacy is so much more!

It is an excellent resource in the foundations of info lit instruction for the library professional.

5 out of 5 stars For students of library science and practicing librarians.......2001-09-09

Information Literacy Instruction: Theory And Practice is an exhaustive textbook (450 pp.) with a CD-ROM supplement. Educator Esther Grassian and Librarian Joan Kaplowitz's purpose is to provide the reader through an in-depth discussion of the theory and practice of library instruction. Chapters range from basics to advanced studies. The basic topics in parts I and II include the history of user education, the psychology of active learning as applied to library teaching, critical thinking skills. The advanced topics of part III include assessing needs, setting goals, selecting instructional modes, handling copyright issues, designing electronic teaching materials, dealing with local politics on campus or elsewhere, and much more. The CD-ROM has a wide variety of useful materials: instructional mode web pages, an interactive database to select among modes, PowerPoint presentations, handouts for training or personal use, checklists and more. Information Literacy Instruction is very highly recommended for students of library science and practicing librarians, especially in our contemporary age where technology marches ever on!

An alarming trend in reading instruction has spread throughout our educational system: the omission of literature. More and more teachers are focusing on skills-based instruction without going the crucial extra mile to include high-quality reading content, although studies show that children's literacy development requires frequent encounters with engaging creative expression throughout the school day. Now, finding the perfect material just got a lot simpler.

This exhaustive resource, the first of its kind, recommends hundreds of books, videos, CD-ROMs, and other media that librarians, kids, and teachers will love. The recommended titles are listed underneath established national curriculum standards in each major subject area. Bring science, art, health, math, music, language arts, sports, and social studies more dynamically alive in your classroom with the most esteemed and enjoyable books and media available through 2001. The authors also present innumerable ways to include solid reading, writing, discussion, and interaction into more conventional class work on every school subject. Go that extra mile with Lowe and Matthew and make your teaching extraordinary.

                        Book Description

As collections deteriorate and library budgets shrink, the longevity of collections becomes an increasingly important issue. To minimize harm to collections, librarians need to emphasize the importance of preservation and proper handling. This professional reference explains how to create, implement and evaluate formal and informal preservation education programs in school, public, academic, and special collections. Chapters are written by contributors from a wide range of positions in librarianship and academia. Building on the assumption that most misuse is because of misunderstanding or lack of understanding, much attention is given to reaching all types of patrons and changing attitudes. Because preservation largely depends on the attitude of patrons, much attention is given to reaching all types of patrons. Informing adults to avoid misuse and teaching children to respect books and to handle them carefully are two different methods. Visual messages using posters, bookmarks, and signs to educate can help prevent damage. Library staff, on the other hand, benefit from training programs, which can effectively include tests and videos. Users of rare and archival materials can be informed through brochures, and one-on-one interaction with librarians. The volume includes over 35 illustrative case studies, and it concludes with an extensive bibliography and videography.

                            Book Description

While there is a great deal of anecdotal evidence that significant organizational changes are taking place in academic libraries, the literature suggests that most of these changes take the form of evolutionary, or incremental improvement. But what happens when libraries find themselves in a society characterized by increased information availability compression of time and space, and growing turbulence and unpredictability? These are conditions with which the business world has been grappling for years, conditions that require not an evolutionary approach, but nimbleness and rapid response. One part theory (borrowed from business world), one part practice (including detailed case studies of the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Arizona), one part inspiration, Beyond Survival shows you how the transition tactics and strategies developed by businesses can be adapted to academic libraries. By judiciously adopting the same organizational development tools and concepts espoused by the business world, academic libraries can not only survive in the short term, but can take advantage of emergent opportunities to ensure long-term excellence.
