          3 out of 5 stars It's a workbook.......1997-11-17

The authors' book is a marketing student's tour of the internet. Place the book by your keyboard and visit the sites.

The division of the book into topics that parallel those found in many Principles of Marketing texts makes it a useful companion to most of those texts, but without one of those texts--or strong familiarity with one--the book's usefulness is limited. The book's publisher is a major publisher of business textbooks.

One could claim that the book's coverage of the topics it identifies is uneven, but in truth, it's the result of uneven coverage of those topics on the web itself. If the reader is looking for a guide on how to market on the internet, this is not the book. If the reader is looking for how marketers are using the internet to do the things covered in a Principles text. It's here.

                      Book Description

Images and video play a crucial role in visual information systems and multimedia. There is an extraordinary number of applications of such systems in entertainment, business, art, engineering, and science. Such applications often involved large image and video collections, and therefore, searching for images and video in large collections is becoming an important operation. Because of the size of such databases, efficiency is crucial. We strongly believe that image and video retrieval need an integrated approach from fields such as image processing, shape processing, perception, database indexing, visualization, and querying, etc.
This book contains a selection of results that was presented at the Dagstuhl Seminar on Content-Based Image and Video Retrieval, in December 1999. The purpose of this seminar was to bring together people from the various fields, in order to promote information exchange and interaction among researchers who are interested in various aspects of accessing the content of image and video data. The book provides an overview of the state of the art in content-based image and video retrieval. The topics covered by the chapters are integrated system aspects, as well as techniques from image processing, computer vision, multimedia, databases, graphics, signal processing, and information theory.
The book will be of interest to researchers and professionals in the fields of multimedia, visual information (database) systems, computer vision, and information retrieval.

                        Book Description

Recent advances in computing, communication, and data storage have led to an increasing number of large digital libraries publicly available on the Internet. In addition to alphanumeric data, other modalities, including video play an important role in these libraries. Ordinary techniques will not retrieve required information from the enormous mass of data stored in digital video libraries. Instead of words, a video retrieval system deals with collections of video records. Therefore, the system is confronted with the problem of video understanding. The system gathers key information from a video in order to allow users to query semantics instead of raw video data or video features. Users expect tools that automatically understand and manipulate the video content in the same structured way as a traditional database manages numeric and textual data. Consequently, content-based search and retrieval of video data becomes a challenging and important problem.
This book focuses particularly on content-based video retrieval. After addressing basic concepts and techniques in the field, Content-Based Video Retrieval: A Database Perspective concentrates on the semantic gap problem, i.e., the problem of inferring semantics from raw video data, as the main problem of content-based video retrieval. This book identifies and proposes the integrated use of three different techniques to bridge the semantic gap, namely, spatio-temporal formalization methods, hidden Markov models, and dynamic Bayesian networks. As the problem is approached from a database perspective, the emphasis evolves from a database management system into a video database management system. This system allows a user to retrieve the desired video sequence among voluminous amounts of video data in an efficient and semantically meaningful way. This book also presents a modeling framework and a prototype of a content-based video management system that integrates the three methods and provides efficient, flexible, and scalable content-based video retrieval. The proposed approach is validated in the domain of sport videos for which some experimental results are presented.
Content-Based Video Retrieval: A Database Perspective is designed for a professional audience, composed of researchers and practitioners in industry. This book is also suitable as a secondary text for graduate-level students in computer science and electrical engineering.

                              Book Description

Processing multimedia content has emerged as a key area for the application of machine learning techniques, where the objectives are to provide insight into the domain from which the data is drawn, and to organize that data and improve the performance of the processes manipulating it. Applying machine learning techniques to multimedia content involves special considerations – the data is typically of very high dimension, and the normal distinction between supervised and unsupervised techniques does not always apply.

This book provides a comprehensive coverage of the most important machine learning techniques used and their application in this domain. Arising from the EU MUSCLE network, a program that drew together multidisciplinary teams with expertise in machine learning, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, and image, video, text and crossmedia processing, the book first introduces the machine learning principles and techniques that are applied in multimedia data processing and analysis. The second part focuses on multimedia data processing applications, with chapters examining specific machine learning issues in domains such as image retrieval, biometrics, semantic labelling, mobile devices, and mining in text and music.

This book will be suitable for practitioners, researchers and students engaged with machine learning in multimedia applications.

                                  Book Description

Retrieval of multimedia data is different from retrieval of structured data. A key problem in multimedia databases is search, and the proposed solutions to the problem of multimedia information retrieval span a rather wide spectrum of topics outside the traditional database area, ranging from information retrieval and human–computer interaction to computer vision and pattern recognition.

Based on more than 10 years of teaching experience, Blanken and his coeditors have assembled all the topics that should be covered in advanced undergraduate or graduate courses on multimedia retrieval and multimedia databases. The single chapters of this textbook explain the general architecture of multimedia information retrieval systems; various metadata languages like Dublin Core, RDF, or MPEG; pattern recognition through Markov models, unsupervised learning, and pattern clustering; various indexing approaches to audio and video streams; interaction and control; the protection of content and user privacy; and search effectiveness and efficiency. The authors emphasize high-level features and show how these features are used in mathematical models to support the retrieval process. For each chapter, there’s detail on further reading, and additional exercises and teaching material is available online.

                                    Book Description

Large volumes of video content can only be easily accessed by the use of rapid browsing and retrieval techniques. Constructing a video table of contents (ToC) and video highlights to enable end users to sift through all this data and find what they want, when they want are essential. This reference puts forth a unified framework to integrate these functions supporting efficient browsing and retrieval of video content. The authors have developed a cohesive way to create a video table of contents, video highlights, and video indices that serve to streamline the use of applications in consumer and surveillance video applications.

The authors discuss the generation of table of contents, extraction of highlights, different techniques for audio and video marker recognition, and indexing with low-level features such as color, texture, and shape. Current applications including this summarization and browsing technology are also reviewed. Applications such as event detection in elevator surveillance, highlight extraction from sports video, and image and video database management are considered within the proposed framework. This book presents the latest in research and readers will find their search for knowledge completely satisfied by the breadth of the information covered in this volume.
