Book Description
On October 8, 1908, Mordecai Brown clutched a half-dozen notes inside his coat pocket. The message of each was clear: We’ll kill you if you pitch and beat the Giants. A black handprint marked each note, the signature of the Italian Mafia.
Mordecai Brown—dubbed “Three Finger” because of a childhood farm injury—was the dominant pitcher for the great Chicago Cubs team of the early twentieth century, a team that from 1906 through 1910 was arguably the best in baseball history. Brown’s handicap enabled him to throw pitches with an unconventional movement that left batters bewildered—the curve ball that Ty Cobb once called “the most devastating” he had ever faced.
How Brown responded to the Mafia’s threats in 1908 mirrored the way he took life in general: with unflappable courage and resolve. Telling his story for the first time, Cindy Thomson and Scott Brown trail Mordecai from the Indiana countryside to the coal mines, from semipro ball to the Majors, from the World Series mound back down to the Minors. Along the way they retrieve the lost lore of one of baseball’s greatest pitchers—and chronicle one man’s determination to reach a dream that most believed was unreachable.

High Five for Three Finger.......2007-02-25
As a Deadball Era fan and researcher, I have been waiting for this biography for several years. Three Finger Brown was one of the main keys to the Cubs' success from 1906-1910, when they were the premier team of the National League. Cindy Thomson and Scott Brown have done their homework in the research that they did for this book, and they have also made it a highly enjoyable and easy read, despite the amount of research that backs up their writing.
This book is also good for general baseball readers who want to read about one of the greatest pitchers in the game. And of course, Cubs fans will enjoy it, as pointed out by the introduction by Ferguson Jenkins. Finally, it is a tribute to a man who overcame a disability with hard work, humility, and grace.
A Solid Three Stars.......2007-02-23
I have hundreds of baseball books in my library including several biograhies. I found this book to be okay, but certainly not up to the standards of other five star books I have. Mordecai Brown is certainly worthy of a biography, but parts of the book didn't hold my interest the way I thought it would. I did find some interesting anecdotes such as Chicago Federal League owner Charles Weegham locating seats near the field (today's Wrigley Field) to be fan friendly, introducing concession stands so vendors wouldn't block the fans' view, and allowing fans to keep foul balls as souvenirs. Another interesting story is a conversation that baseball great George Sisler had with Brown following their retirement from the game regarding baseball when Sisler was in Terre Haute, Indiana, scouting for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and neither knew who the other was until somewhat into the conversation. Several of Brown's teammates died in the year 1947 and Brown, himself, passed away in 1948 the same year as the Babe. Incidentally, the name of former Brooklyn Dodger outfielder Pete Reiser is misspelled on page 206. The author has it spelled "Reecer". It is not a typo since it is spelled the same way in the index. The book was an okay read, and three stars is not bad. However, it certainly doesn't rate as a baseball classic by any means, and probably wasn't meant to be.
Fianlly Three Finger gets his due.......2006-11-19
It took longer than it should have for a bio of this early twentieth century top pitcher to be written, considering some of the baseball bios that have been produced. Perhaps the greatest Cub pitcher ever, Mordecai Brown was also a kind, good man. This book provides good insight into his life, and some photos never before published. If anything, it could have used a bit more detail on his pitching, at least in regular season games. But we are treated to detail on some of the famous Mathewson-Brown match-ups (Brown won the career duel), and the World series appearances.
Brown is the hero, but his success and abilities are underplayed, if anything. That's a relief next to several current books about players whose authors are trying to get them into the Hall of Fame. A pleasurable, easy read. The baseball stats are reliable except in one instance where the authors must have had a petite mal seizure. Page 78 states that Brown's 213 innings pitched in 1908 were "more than any other single year in his career." The number is a typo for 312, but anyway, as the authors later note, Brown pitched 343 innings the following year. But not to worry, this is a unique lapse, and pointed out here only to help readers, or correct any future edition. Thanks for this book!
Three Finger: The Mordecai Brown Story.......2006-09-15
A biography on Mordecai Brown had never been written. Finally, a well researched, well written book on Mordecai Brown has been published. I really enjoyed this book.
Cubs Golden Years.......2006-09-11
Remember the last time the Cubs won the World Series? Mordecai Brown was one of the starting Pitchers. For you Cubs fans this is a another book on one of the keystones of those World Series years. This is a light read not too heavy, but well worth the price. Learn about another baseball great who was a great person and lived a simple life not full full of scandal. An example of a person who overcame life's problem and became a decent and humble person. I am proud to say he is from Indiana!

very funny/ cute retelling of story. my kids loved acting out the different puppet roles. the illustrations were very cute. there were very good moral points like rudeness, greed, cleanliness demonstrated in the book. my kids love reading it over and over again and acting out their parts with the puppets, almost like a play.

Book Description
A behind-the-scenes mocumentary of the animation industry. Through a series of never-before-seen interviews and rare photos, documentary-maker Rich Koslowski reveals the horrifying true story behind the Cartoon industry and our most celebrated cartoon actors-the story that Hollywood doesn't want you to see!
Customer Reviews:
Interesting idea, somehow only partially works..........2003-03-04
I have to disagree with a previous reviewer that there is no parallel in modern Hollywood for the "Ritual" as outlined in the book...has the reviewer no clue about the number of actors that have plastic surgery done, to nearly every part of their bodies...from adding "Double-D" silcone breast implants to having things nipped, tucked and otherwise cut/altered? (Not to mention the almost obsessive time spent dieting and working out to achieve near anorexic thin-ness!) We often overlook the fact that such surgery is, in fact mutilation of the natural state of the body. And that such obsessive desperation to remain thin exhibits clearly the paranoia that lead the toons to the ritual in the first place...!
Unfortunately, I do however have to agree that, "When all is said and done, Three Fingers is a comic that never achieves its full potential. By the time you're halfway through the book, you've pretty much read everything that Koslowski has to offer and the second half is simply more of the same, but with no real development or plot to keep it fresh." However, as a Disney fan I was entertained by the large number of photos of Mr. Disney and the studios that were imitated here. The author clearly knows his animation history, as a starting point. It's just too bad that there wasn't more humor to sustain the joke.
Disappointing..........2003-02-26
The concept behind Three Fingers is that we are watching a "documentary" about cartoon superstar Rickey Rat (think Mickey Mouse, but with a foul mouth and an endless supply of liquor and cigarettes) and the cartoon industry. Many familiar faces show up, including Portly Pig, Freidrich Von Katze, and Sly Vester the Cat. It's a great idea and Koslowski has a lot of fun with documentary 'interviews' of these classic cartoon characters, now old and bitter, discussing the golden years of their movie careers.
Top Shelf has done a wonderful job with this book; it looks great and is priced very reasonably. And Koslowski, to his credit, does a magnificent job of making it all feel 'real.' So, you might wonder, what's my problem? Why only two stars? Well, I'll tell ya... As I was reading Three Fingers, I kept waiting for the moment when I would start enjoying it. I mean, I liked the premise and I thought it was put together nicely, so I was just waiting for that magical thing to happen where you become absorbed in the book/comic you're reading and all is well in the world. But it didn't happen.
I think the main problem with Three Fingers is that Koslowski takes a hell of a long time to build up the mystery of "the ritual." I mean, page after page is spent telling us about this rumored "ritual." Characters hint at it, deny it, offer conspiracy theories about it... but when we finally learn what the ritual is, it doesn't really make any sense. I mean, yes... technically it makes sense. But, up until that point in the story, Koslowski is parodying a documentary about show business. Parallels between the cartoon stars and real-life stars give the whole thing a feeling of authenticity that makes the funny parts funny and the sad parts downright tragic. For example, we see how the cartoon characters were discriminated against and how that affected their Hollywood opportunities. But, the "ritual" has no real-life counterpart. Even within the logic of the book, it makes no sense. What would Hollywood producers have to gain by perpetuating the myth that has led to the Ritual? It is a horrible thing, yes, but who gains from it? Nobody. So, why would Hollywood producers create a "cover-up" for it? Are we supposed to believe that someone, at some point, deliberately began this thing or is it truly supposed to be something that began out of a ridiculous superstition? If it was created, who would have created it and for what possible reason? If it was the result of a silly superstition, then why are the Hollywood Producers denying its existance and then forcing the cartoons to adhere to it?
The whole thing just doesn't make much sense, ultimately, and since it's the only plot we've got, that's a problem. In fact, the sense I got when reading Three Fingers was that Koslowski got this great idea for a book but then realized halfway through that he didn't have a story to tell. So, he threw in this "ritual" thing. But it doesn't work.
A similar flaw occurs when we are briefly introduced to Rickey Ratz' second wife, a human. At first, we are told that they were very much in love but that it didn't last because the world wasn't ready for a "mixed" couple. Okay, that's an interesting idea to play around with... but it gets dropped right there and is never picked up again. Once again, it feels as though Koslowski threw in a neat idea but then never developed it or figured out how it would fit in within the larger story.
When all is said and done, Three Fingers is a comic that never achieves its full potential. By the time you're halfway through the book, you've pretty much read everything that Koslowski has to offer and the second half is simply more of the same, but with no real development or plot to keep it fresh. I wish that I could recommend Three Fingers, but I can't.
An Interesting Spin on "Roger Rabbit" Territory..........2003-02-12
The basic premise of "three fingers" is fairly simple: A "Behind The Music" type documentary about a Walt Disney-esque man, in a world where cartoons aren't drawings, but opressed minorities. The Mickey Mouse of this story is Ricky Rat, who becomes the first 'toon star. Ricky has a secret to his success, though, and other 'toons suffered in their attempts to replicate his rise to fame....
Creator Rich Koslowski (The Three Geeks) does a great job of keeping a documentary feel to the book; The lush art perfectly captures that newsreel look you'd expect. The problem for me lay with the books mysterious "Ritual": The revelation of just WHAT the ritual is turns out to be a big letdown. (Koslowski manages to mine a truly chilling moment from "The Ritual", though- The interview with the Daffy Duck character...) It was fun to match up the characters in the book with their real-life Warner Bros. and Disney counterparts.
Three Fingers isn't a masterpiece; It is a fun read, though, and deserves a wider audience among Graphic Novel fans.

This was one of the very first books our baby daughter responded to. The finger puppets are cute and intriguing, and the "shhhhhh" sound always brought on a giggle. Great for infants (better than the kitten and puppy books from the same series).

One of the best parenting books!.......2007-08-06
Loved, loved, LOVED this book! It offers practical no nonsense advice to parents about dealing with general and specific situations such as tantrums. There are too many guilt-ridden parents out there who give everything to their child and expect NOTHING in return. Most especially a simple thank you and some respect. It is a great gift for first time parents.
One of the better parenting books I've read.......2006-02-17
I've been working as a child psychologist for 17 years and have read many parenting books, always looking for materials to help out the parents I see. This book has one of the worst titles I've encountered, but is one of the better books on the subject I've read. I'd urge parents not to be frightened off by the rather negative title and give the insides a try. It's not perfect, but it is very well written, an easy read, and gives much advice that is valuable if put into consistent practice. If your child is having behaviors which are problematic, this is a good reference tool to begin looking at how to change the patterns that often create or perpetuate problems.
Not as good as I expected.......2003-01-14
This book is good for beginners, but I've already tried EVERYTHING Dr. Condrell said before ever buying this book (WITHOUT reading it in a book, or magazine, or getting advice from my pediatrician), and it STILL doesn't work! I guess maybe I have an extra stubborn 3 year old, but nothing in his book is news to me. Was a waste of my money!
My sister read it just for fun!.......2002-11-24
The greatest part about this book is how easy it is to read and how directly applicable it is. No long-winded stuffy professors. This book shows you exactaly what to do, and not do, and tells it with humor. An easy read that will make you feel much more sane!
Good advice overall.......2000-06-09
This book has a lot of good information in it about how to deal with bratty behavior both at the toddler and the teen level. I didn't agree with everything in the book and I thought some of the proposed punishments were a bit harsh, like if a kid does not clean his room, he is grounded to his room after school and if not finished cleaning by dinner time does not get to eat with the family. I also could have done without the sarcasm, such as the list on "How to Have a Troubled Family". But there is a lot of good advice in the book. I especially liked "behavior that is rewarded will be repeated" and the analogy that dolphins in a show don't do the tricks because they were screamed at or spanked, they do it because they were rewarded when they got it right.
