Customer Reviews:
This may not be what you're thinking...........2007-05-17
I thought this was a trade paperback format collection of these classic Len wein and Jim Aparo/John Byrne stories which it is, but this is about a quarter of the physical size of an actual comic book; its black and white on newsprint but worst of all, the pages are comprised of "redistributed" panels, a convention that many had assumed died in the late 70s and early eighties when many of these reprints were done for "pocket books" for little kids.
Still a great story, and one of the first attempts in the modern era to clean up Bruce Wayne's history during the years between the murder of his parents, and becoming Batman. I didn't realize they still made these poor reproductions, but I guess that explains the low, low price. Caveat Emptor.
An interesting look at the origins of Gotham City's most famous citizens.......2006-02-03
The Untold Legend of the Batman is a three-issue series, issued in 1980, that retold the origins of the Batman, his allies, and some of his enemies. The first issue really just tells the story of Batman's origins, and it provides some surprising information: the first Batman was actually Bruce Wayne's father, and the first Robin was actually Bruce Wayne. Don't take this too literally, though. Bruce's father wore a bat-man-ish suit to a charity fundraiser not long before he was gunned down; at this special event, he was kidnapped and ordered to tend to a criminal's wounds. He refused, sent the guy to the Big House with his testimony, and was gunned down in retribution. Bruce Wayne dedicated his life to finding his parents' killer and fighting criminals of all kinds; in order to do this, he needed a teacher, and he chose Gotham's most gifted detective. Since he didn't want the detective to recognize him, he donned a costume - the Robin costume. The detective, Harvey Harris, actually came up with the name Robin because young Bruce looked "as brilliant as a robin redbreast" in the outfit. Oh, it is to laugh.
Bruce Wayne holds his father's Batman outfit in almost sacred regard, so naturally he's highly ticked off when someone steals it, cuts it up, and mails it back to him. That's what starts this whole series off. Someone knows Batman's secrets and is out to get him. At the end of the second issue, the Batmobile itself blows up right there inside the Batcave, sending Batman into a frenzy. We finally learn the identity of the person behind the attacks in the third and last issue - and you may be surprised by the revelation.
There are a number of interesting little Batman tidbits spread throughout the course of this little series - and you'll also get a special look at some of Batman's crime-fighting tools. After looking back upon the origins of both Batman and Robin, you'll meet the Joker when he was just the Red Hood, see how Harvey Dent became Two-Face, cast your eyes upon Barbara Gordon before and after she dons the BatGirl costume, and even learn who among Batman's enemies knows his true identity. You'll also see how Commissioner Gordon wasn't Batman's biggest fan early on, as Batman's success made the police department look pretty bad in comparison. You'll even get a gander at the man who designs and makes the Batmobile for the caped crusaders. I was most interested in Alfred's story, though; you'll see him helping refugees escape the Germans in World War II, discover that he was a successful stage actor after the war, and see just how he came to serve as Bruce Wayne's butler, confidante, and friend.
I daresay some won't find the revelation at the end of the story all that satisfactory, but it does provide us with a revealing window into the mind of Batman. It also would have been nice to cram a few more bad guy origin tales into the series, but I guess that would be asking too much. I suppose it's just as well, since all of these origin stories tend to drift and change over time. The Untold Legend of the Batman isn't a great series by any means, but it is one that all Batman fans should enjoy to some degree - and you might even learn something you didn't already know about this most famous of comic book heroes.
A true fan of the "Batman" must have this one........2005-08-31
It is the inspiration for all the background of all the movie
versions, and pretty much a great deal of the story line of the
new Batman Begins movie also. A true Bat-o-phile must have...
An okay read...some interesting stuff.......2004-06-28
Saw this in Wal-Mart and picked it up. It's a pretty good story and re-telling of the Batman origin. I have always loved the post-crisis Batman, but reading the pre-crisis origin for Batman was pretty fascinating. The only downside was the black and white art, and the dialogue was very out of date. But for a story that cost a little over three dollars, I'm not complaining.
A nifty little part of comic book history........2002-02-26
For those interested in the history of Batman you probably find this story an entertaining, though not great, story about the Pre-Crisis Batman. This is a consolidation of all the history, origin, and first meetings of the character before Crisis and Year One. I liked the story but I have say to that I'm glad they don't write Batman this way anymore (the dialogue's pretty bad even for an exposition story) and I very much prefer the scaled back origin that they character has now. On the art Jim Aparo is in top form in this black and white story, being inked by John Byrne. I found this to be the perfect companion piece to Batman: Strange Apparitions.
For those interested in the post-Crisis retelling of these stories: Year Two retells Batman's confrontation w/ Joe Chill (Chill's role was thrown into doubt after the Zero Hour tie-in of DETECTIVE; a LOTDK story from 2000 called "Siege" retells the story of the 1st Bat-costume and the penthouse; and Lew Moxon was retold last year (2001) as part of the Brubaker/Mcdaniel run in BATMAN, with Thomas Wayne dressed as Zorro instead.
Also the shipping cost for this will be more than the actual price of the book.

"I came into baseball with a strikeout," Kirk Gibson readily admits in his autobiography, "and I went out with a strikeout. I came in being humbled, and I went out being humbled." In between his humiliations, though, the former Tiger and Dodger outfielder played some of the most passionately charged baseball in recent memory, his apotheosis coming in the opening game of the 1988 World Series with the most improbable--and memorable--home run since Babe Ruth's called shot. What makes this autobiography so intriguing is its opulence. With his fiery temperament, his uniform constantly dirty, and a pair of bad legs in constant need of repair, Gibson was like an old junker that wouldn't stop running. His book, on the other hand, is a glitzy, photo-filled, coffee-table-sized Mercedes, beautifully designed and written with insight.
Customer Reviews:
The Ultimate Gamer.......2005-07-05
Sports fans admire and respect natural talent but they absolutely love hustle. Kirk Gibson was one of those rare athletes who had both. An All-American in baseball and football at Michigan State, Gibson could have easily had a successful NFL career but he chose baseball instead partly because he wanted a challenge. Kirk Gibson rarely chose the easiest path.
Gibson was one of my favorites because he was the ultimate gamer, someone who thrived in the clutch and simply wanted to win at any cost. Unfortunately, usually that cost was his health. His willingness to put his body on the line helped his teams win a lot of games but it also kept him from having a Hall of Fame-caliber career. Somehow I don't think Kirk minds. After all, he was a key member of two World Champion teams and he had several unforgettable moments -- the 523 foot blast over the Tiger Stadium roof, the World Series-clinching home run against personal nemesis Goose Gossage in 1984, and, of course, the inspiring pinch hit home run off Dennis Eckersley in game one of the 1988 World Series that cemented Gibson's place in baseball lore forever.
Bottom of the Ninth is like most autobiographies -- part truth, part legend, part ego. But anyone who admired Kirk Gibson will enjoy this trip down memory lane, as told by the man himself.
WORST BASEBALL BOOK EVER WRITTEN??!!.......2000-09-17
That reader from Chicago has got to be kidding!! Besides GIBSON admits in his younger days he was very obnoxious so whats the big secret?? The book reads extremely well even if your not a GIBSON fan.The book also shows that with DRIVE and DETERMINATION you can be a success in almost anything!! A great book for youngsters to read!!!Remember GIBSON wasn't a natural gifted athlete at baseball he excelled because he would not give up!!I wish the TIGERS had a whole team of GIBSONS!!Think of what a great country we would have if we had more people with GIBSONS attitude and drive to not give in to the BEAST of defeat! (transam_92584@yahoo.com)
Very well written, easy to read cover to cover........1999-07-06
I found this to be an exceptional book. I personally am a big Kirk Gibson fan. I was able to learn alot about one of the most intense baseball players of the modern era. A great book for collectors or any sports fan in general
I can't believe what I just saw!.......1999-01-26
Is what the excited announcer on TV repeated after Gibby limped to the plate and banged the greatest homer in Game 1 World Series history.
Gibby was obnoxious. He was cocky. But as he grew older, he became humble and even friendly. You can read about this epiphany in this book. Packed with great photos.
For anyone who saw Gibby play football at MSU -- single handedly beating Michigan in 1978 -- or charge his way around the basepaths at Tiger Stadium, there has to be admiration. He hit more clutch homeruns than anyone. He was a competitor, a leader and a winner.
A terrible book by a HUGE egomaniac.......1999-01-07
This is easily one of the worst baseball books I have ever read. Gibson's arrogance is cleverly kept from the reader by his ghostwriter. Trust me, I have met Gibson several times and he is not the person he would like you to think he is. In fact Gibson is the total opposite, and the decision to make the book oversized was probably his so he could cheat whatever fans he has out of a few extra dollars.
Book Description
Skillfully edited by John McNally, Bottom of the Ninth: Great Contemporary Baseball Short Stories collects nineteen contemporary baseball short stories from a successful mix of well-established writers, lesser-knowns, and a few up-and-comers. These stories are characterized by the same dramatic elements that draw people to the sport itself—the mythologizing of players, the obsessions and romance of the game, the bonds between players and fans, parents and children. From a key play, a missed catch, a chance lost, these are tales of characters facing high stakes and calls to action, metaphorically and literally, in the bottom of the ninth.
Customer Reviews:
Fiction and Baseball - A Perfect Pairing.......2004-04-16
In this marvelous anthology of short stories about baseball, editor John McNally has assembled the fiction of contemporary writers, from Patricia Highsmith to André Dubus to Stuart Dybek, who share a fascination with the game and its influence on those who play it. Because these writers have different readerships and styles, these thematically grouped stories never get tiring. Instead, each one takes the reader deeper into the love of the game. The result is an exhilarating read for those who love both high-quality fiction and baseball.
Singling out individual stories from the rest is not an easy task since all are deserving of mention. Dubus's "After the Game" is about a major league shortstop from the Dominican Republic who inexplicably has a breakdown after a winning game. This story contrasts powerfully with David Jauss's "The Bigs", also about a player from the Dominican Republic, a minor leaguer who blows his chance at major league play because he cannot reconcile his ambition with what it has cost. Many of these stories are about missed chances and the heartbreak of never reaching the big leagues. Cris Mazza's brutal "Caught" follows a former minor league catcher haunted by his last moment as a professional player as he is picked up by a gay man in a bar. Leslie Pietrzyk shows the desperation of a minor leaguer's wife who will do anything to give her husband a chance at the show on his thirtieth birthday. Dybek's "Death of the Right Fielder" is an surreal story about a nameless right fielder who dies mysteriously - and is promptly buried - in his position. The more traditional "The Barbarians" by Highsmith explores the violence amateur ballplayers elicit in a painter who wants nothing more than to beautify "something that was, essentially, unbeautifiable." We even get a humanizing story about an umpire by Kurt Rheinheimer. In these nineteen stories, not a single one misses.
I highly recommend this book to all who love baseball and literature. Especially as the season gets underway, I can't think of a better way to spend time between televised games.
Literary Baseball.......2003-06-25
This book is for fans of literary baseball short stories. If you like the work of Andre Dubus (whose story inspired the movie IN THE BEDROOM), Patricia Highsmith (who wrote the novel THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY), and David Carkeet (whose novel THE GREATEST SLUMP OF ALL TIME is often listed as one of the best contemporary baseball novels), then you'll love this book. Some of these stories have appeared in Best American Short Stories, and many have appeared in top literary magazines. Some stories are funny; some are dark. This is NOT a book of baseball anecdotes or sappy sentimentality or play-by-play accounts or simplistic moralizing. Like all great stories, the main subject (in this instance, baseball) is also a metaphor for some aspect of life, and, as anyone who's lived long enough should know, life is nothing if not ambiguous and complex. I highly recommend this anthology of funny, heartbreaking, ironic, scary, and intense stories in which baseball plays a significant role.
Not what I expected.......2003-06-16
I bought this book looking for some stories about players, about the game of baseball, about the human side of it. I bought it for my son for his 11th birthday. I bought the wrong book. This book is NOT appropriate for anyone under 16, and not for many over 16. I'm sure many players use profanity, but almost every story had more than enough. One story led up to a player and his girl going through the trauma of a backroom abortion (where is the baseball in that?), another ended with the picture of a player sliding headfirst into home to be greeted by the batter, a malevolent teammate with a grudge who slugged his face with the bat. Looking for junk story writers trying to be cute or brutally realistic? Fine, this book is for you. Looking for good baseball stories? Look somewhere else.

Love Conquers All.......2004-11-20
I absolutely enjoyed this book. Brad and Gillian go through so much you wonder if they're ever going to get it right. This story takes you around corners you didn't know it would go. I felt I knew these characters. I could understand their actions even if I didn't agree because the characters were developed so well. Anyone that enjoys reading stories where love conquers all will find themselves enveloped in this great novel.

Book Description
Life is pretty dreary for the residents of the Eastview Retirement Center. Every day it's the same old same old. But then some residents start to talk at suppertime. The result of their discussion is the desire to form a baseball team. If they could play just one more game, they think they could get some dignity and self-respect back. The nursing home administration will not hear of such a thing. Old people don't play baseball! But Martin Reeves and his tablemates arrange a game with the Little League All-Stars that practice on the field just next door to where they live. A newspaper sports writer hears about it, writes a story, and the big game takes on a life of its own. As a result, the game is played, not on the little league diamond, but in a triple-A baseball stadium with packed stands. Everyone wins.
Customer Reviews:
Grumpy Old Men meets the Bad New Bears.......2006-07-04
Baseball, ingenuity and determination, what could be more American? This book genuinely surprised me with its honest characters and exciting plot. I was expecting another 'baseball' novel, but instead I discovered more about the human condition, what it means to grow old and lose the ability to do things that you once took for granted. The main character, Martin, reminded me of many friends I've had who faced challenges of the body and had to rely on their wisdom and experience to achieve their life's goals. I recommend this book as an excellent quick read for the beach or just a hot, lazy summer afternoon.

Customer Reviews:
Chris Parson is the next hero of high-stakes politics!.......2004-03-23
This book keeps you on the edge of your seat through one chapter after another! From the tense first chapter set in a prison torture camp, through the ensuing chapters in Boston, our hero Chris Parsons keeps us in anticipation as he unravels a mystery that rattles all the way up through the highest levels of government!
This is a must read book for any adventure/mystery enthusiast, and hopefully it's the first of many more Chris Parsons novels to come!
An Exciting First Novel!.......2004-03-17
Open the cover of Peter Spring's novel, The Last Casualty, and you will be thrust into the exciting world of Chris Parsons, a young reporter working in Boston, Massachusetts. In this story, Chris is assigned to write a fairly routine article about a senator running for president, but when he digs a little deeper into the senator's background, he finds a puzzling web of cover-ups and mystery. Although his editor tells him to drop his investigation of the senator's past, Chris senses that he may be on the verge of breaking a major story involving the Vietnam War and the senator's father. He presses on despite the fact that dead bodies of people associated with his newspaper research keep piling up. Will Chris be the next victim?
This novel is well written with a seamless plot that keeps the reader in suspense until the end, when Peter Spring pulls all of the evidence together into a satisfying conclusion. Chris Parsons, his colleagues and his friends are engaging and three-dimensional, with delightful quirks that make even the smallest characters worthy of attention. The details of Boston are authentic and clear, giving the reader a real sense of the environment in which Chris lives, and his budding relationship with Leslie is sweet without overshadowing the major plot of the story.
Overall, this was a thoroughly entertaining book, one I would recommend to anyone looking for a good suspenseful tale. I hope to read more about Chris Parsons in future novels by Peter Spring!
Suspenseful.......2004-02-29
Suspenseful from beginning to end. I'm looking forward to the next Chris Parsons mystery! The characters were realistic and exciting.
The Last Casualty.......2004-02-27
A quick and exciting read! Hope this will be the first in a series of Chris Parsons mysteries...I highly recommend this book!!Two thumbs up!!!
A Thrilling Book.......2004-01-22
I picked this book up the other day and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an exciting read. The book follows a young newspaper reporter working for the fictional Boston Tribune as he finds himself involved in a governmental conspiracy. What begins as a feature article on an former POW-turned aspiring presidental candidate soon becomes a high stakes game where the reader never knows who will be the next casualty.
The author draws on his experience of being a West Point cadet as well as a setting (Boston) of which he obviously has extensive knowledge. This provides a very real world for the protaganist, Chris Parsons. While some conspiracy theories can seem far-fetched, Peter Spring weaves quite a believeable story. He also keeps the action going at a generous pace and unravels the mystery one piece at a time, keeping you reading until the thrilling conclusion when all is revealed.
