Solid as a fantasy dwarf.......2002-11-19
The author provides a lot of flavor for anyone wanting to play a dwarf in a D&Dv3 campaign. Like the other Quintessential books, it is geared at giving the player more choices. Prestige classes are oriented around the player instead of a fairly two dimensional villian. DMs shouldn't worry. This is not unbalanced. If anything it is a little conservative.
Fun factoids: the author notes that he used to work in the office of a gold mine -- he also ran a few all-dwarf D&D campaigns.
Book Description
The Quintessential II books are the Advanced Tactics series from Mongoose Publishing. Neither replacing or requiring the use of the first Quintessential series, these books explore aspects of character classes never before examined and allow players to fully recognize the potential of their characters. Featuring character paths that allow players to develop without the need for prestige classes and what options are available at epic level and beyond, these books are truly the next stage of character development. This sixth book in the series details one of the most iconic fantasy races ever intorduced - the Dwarf
Book Description
In the early transition from the long-lived flintlock system, handgun development closely paralleled that of the long arms. With the advent of the revolving pistols, however; came patents that created monopolies in revolver production and the through-bored cylinder necessary for self-contained metallic cartridges. The caplock revolvers took on a separate evolution and remained state of the art long after the widespread appearance of cartridge firing rifles and shotguns. They rode in the holsters of of explorers and adventurers across the world and granted safe conduct in the back-alleys of the Industrial West right up until the last quarter of the 19th Century. Handguns possess a mystique distinctly different from that of other firearms. They are tools of personal empowerment-chosen by their owners to provide independence and freedom of movement. In the ambitious, optimistic early years of western industrial civilization they were the emblem of liberty and equality and the bane of repressive governments and social movements. Largely because of the traditions that emerged in the time of the caplock pistols and revolvers, they remain so in the early years of the 21st Century.
Customer Reviews:
great resource for caplocks.......2007-02-18
Well-written, lots of information about caplocks during their brief but important period of use. I was not disappointed in the reason for purchase which was the honest reviews of modern replicas. The only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars are the pictures and awful Old English font used. A 19th century one would have been better. Maybe in the 2nd edition they will make some changes.
Percussion Pistols And Revolvers: History, Performance and Practical Use.......2007-01-04
This is a fun little book, obviously a labor of love by the authors. The coverage of performance is not all-inclusive, but the historical information is interesting and you can infer the authors' preferences for certain brands of reproductions. They missed the Rogers & Spencer revolver, though there aren't many of them around. I like the R&S grip and it's a solid design, so too bad they didn't cover it. The book does cover the Colts and the Remington New Army pretty thoroughly, along with a few others that were of less interest to me. It steered me away from the Walker and Dragoon Colts and convinced me I had to have an 1851 Navy Colt, though I bought a .44-cal version that's compatible with my other cap-and-ball revolvers. The authors didn't test the .44-cal, only the more-common .36-cal.
What this book needs more than anything else is copy editing. There are many consistent misspellings, which detract from the pleasure of reading it. That's why I gave it only 4 stars. Perhaps the authors can find a friendly local English teacher to clean up the manuscript before the next edition.
Nice little book, worthy addition to your blackpowder gun book collection.......2006-09-23
Nice little book, full of information about various types of handguns. I liked the opinion bits about various gun makers, the load charts for each gun, nice amount of information (including history)- even for a novice to the sport. I like the range test details and comparisons to modern weapons too.
At least one reviewer mentioned the poor photographs, I don't remember the technical term but they're printed newspaper style (too hard to look at) and would be helped if they were larger. The old English script(why use that?)on these pictures is very hard to read at this scale, in one instance it's impossible. Fortunately the real information is in each chapter instead of the pictures.
My biggest complaint is that while various gunmakers/ dealers/ parts suppliers are mentioned you don't get an address or website for any of them. Many of the readers of this book will already have these bits but they should be provided for the novice as well.
An excellent, practical, informative manual for shooting reproduction cap and ball pistols.......2006-09-14
I had purchased this book to help provide information about shooting cap and ball revolvers but had the additional pleasure of finding excellent information on care, cleaning, tuning and background as well. While it does not cover all available reproduced models it is very informative, helpful and humorous about the models it does cover. The only negative I have is that the captioned photos are in very small print and difficult to read. I intend to buy a second copy for my reference library and use my 1st copy as a range and bench reference. I hope that Bates and Cumpston continue with another book covering other cap and ball pistols not covered in this work. A very useful book for Remington and Colt cap and ball shooters.
A wonderful read, and a useful reference.......2006-07-14
This is a great book, from a historical reading standpoint. It puts the technological progression of the percussion handgun in historical context.
I thoroughly enjoyed the practical information on how to use the various antique versions and modern replicas of these old guns. I also appreciated the candid assesment of build quality, parts availability and customer service from the various importers and manufacturers of replica black powder percussion guns.
My only suggestion is that the book be larger, with more pages, with lots of color and black & white photos, with more history, more gunsmithing how-to's, more custom black powder revolver modifications, more gun leather, and more field testing and hunting tales. The only regret I had on finishing this book was that there is not yet a sequel.
Buy this book, but be warned -
. . . upon reading this book you will find yourself awaiting shipment of an 1851 Colt Navy black powder revolver, along with a small box of shooting supplies. (make sure you try real black powder!)
Book Description
For the first time in 10 years, collectors of antique bird decoys and duck calls are able to enjoy a totally updated, revised, and expanded edition of the late Carl F. Luckey's, COLLECTING ANTIQUE BIRD DECOYS AND DUCK CALLS. Hundreds of pages with new information and new photos have been added to this legendary must-have collectible reference guide which offers tps on identifying antique decoys and forgeries and fakes, techniques for restoration and repairs, a guide to "The Schools of Carvers," and much more.
This updated edition provides history and current pricing of the prominent duck and goose hunting decoys used over the past century-plus, including both hand-carved and factory models. Coverage of "modern" decoys-made in the past 50 years, has been added, plus information about duck and goose calls. Also new is a chapter on advertising of decoys and hunting memorabilia from the 1920s through 1950s and an interview with one of the most prominent decoy collectors.

Never Received it!!!!.......2007-05-09
This is one book that I never received, even after they charged my credit card, they would not respond to my emails, offer a refund, or even send me a replacement for the "one lost in the mail."
A wealth of information.......2006-11-27
A very well-researched book, this is definately one for the collector. This book's true value lies in its value guides and background information, making for facinating reading. Unfortunately, the photography is only average, and mostly black and white (there is a middle section of 63 colored pages).
Well worth the wait.......2003-11-21
This is a great book. I've collected decoys for several years and I own the previous edition of Collecting Antique Bird Decoys and Duck Calls which is now some 10 years old. No disrespect, but the new edition by Russ Lewis far surpasses the old book. Not only will you find thousands of photos but Lewis, an avid collector himself, provides loads of information on traditonal carvers, factory birds, regional influences throughout North America and much more. The depth and breadth of the work is impressive. Lewis is a university professor, and you can tell that he is an educator at heart. It also helps that he has a soul of a collector. If you collect decoys, bird calls, or simply enjoy the outdoors you'll love this book. I'll bet my Red-breasted Merganser decoy on it.

This long-awaited book on Americana collectibles sets a new standard in the field of collecting antique fishing memorabilia. Written by the countrys two foremost collectors and experts in the field, this informative, fascinating book is a must for anyone interested in the history of fishing in the United States, antique fishing memorabilia, or metal traps.

We are extremely impressed!.......2005-11-26
My husband and I know one of the authors, Tim Mierzwa, personally. He told us in August of 2005 that he had a book coming out about fishing lures and other equipment. We weren't sure what to think. But when we received the book recently, my
husband and I were extremely impressed on the detail, the photos, explanations and layout of the book! My husband enjoys
fishing and I don't, but BOTH of us are enjoying the book
immensely! I am now ordering another copy for the outdoor club
we live in to share with the members. For anyone interested in
fishing, collecting fishing gear and/or the history and value of fishing gear, this is THE book to own!

Reprint This Book.......2007-03-26
I was "forced" to get this book online without paying for it because no economical alternative exists. I completely disagree with the people on here who don't want this book reprinted because they think that the world would soon become saturated with card-slingers, thus taking away some of the glory of being the only guy in town who can chuck an Ace of Spades through the Washington Post. Please keep in mind that like ALL hobbies that require:
a) reading a book
b) lots of practice and dedication
...means that 99% of the population will buy the book, skim through it and put it on the shelf next to their dusty diet, magic coin trick and gardening books.
Even if his fellow slingers & magicians busted his ballz for releasing trade-secrets, Jay should definitely reprint this book so 1% of people who read the book and follow through with it will keep the art alive.
Keep this on the DL.......2006-04-16
This book is amazing, as previously stated, but I am STRONGLY against any reprinting of it. One of the things that makes card throwing so amazing is the fact that so few people know about it / how to do it. Imagine everyone being able to throw cards. Personally, I think this book is perfect in its current rare form, and should NOT be reprinted.
Good techniques.......2006-03-09
I am a semi-pro card thrower in the national card throwing league (ctl), and I have to say that this book is the bible of card throwing. The techniques I have learned from Jay's book have helped me a lot. I was struggling on the tour last year when I got to talk with the famous Bill 'the Hand' Strongtide who recommended I read this book and it has really helped my form this past year.
A well written How-To by the master of the art........2004-07-28
If you want a hobby and might try sticking a target on the back door and spending your nights throwing cards at it ... you will find this practical guide just as helpful as I did. Fully illustrated with good pictures.
Why this book is so expensive.......2004-01-07
Mr. Jay's book is well researched, and it does a fine job of teaching you to throw a card great distances, better known as card scaling. Mr. Jay is an excellent magician and an author of magic history books.
However, the reason this book is in such demand is that the photographs reveal you (or of course your lovely assistant) need not wear clothes to scale cards. This what one reviewer here called "wonderful, eye-catching photographs." Fair enough, it's Playboy stuff.
Therefore, it is tough to know just how serious Ricky Jay is being here. (I have personally watched in magic shops, years ago, as young men magii tried to buy a copy of this book when it was in stock at its original list price. They failed due to the nude photographs.)
The used book prices of this title are crazy.

Only a few nuclear weapons fell. But in the chaos of famine and plague, there existed a few pockets of order. The strongest of them was the state of Deseret. The climate has changed, and the lake has filled up. There, on the fringes, brave, hardworking pioneers are making the desert bloom again.
Customer Reviews:
Good idea but too much Mormon.......2006-12-29
I liked the story concept but the Mormon stories are too much. Stick with the Ender's books. This book should be placed on the religious fiction shelf.
Short story collection set in not-so-distant future.......2005-02-19
The reviews to this book have not been so glowing. Obviously, you need to know what you are getting into - this is a collection of 4 or 5 short stories set in a future where a nuclear war has dramatically altered everyone's way of life. Some of the stories are very good. Some are just average. I would recommend it, especially if you're Mormon.
Definitely not Ender's Game.......2004-12-10
This book is actually a series of stories. The stories are actually well written, but the religious theme and what happens to some of the kids in them lead me to not recommend this book unless you are prepared to spend a sleepless night or two! Stick with Ender's Saga, Jay.
If only I had known ..........2004-03-21
I loved the Ender saga. I loved the Alvin books. I absolutely love apocalyptic fiction. If only I had read the epilogue, in which OSC describes this novel as LDS-fiction. Latter Day Saints fiction, in my book no more read-worthy than Christian fiction. Unfortunately, I was 40 pages into the novel and getting disgusted by the Saint this, Brother that, Lord and baptism this, before I scanned ahead to see if this was just current-character characterization. Nope. This is a religious book, not a very good one at that, and I doubt I'll bother reading the rest.
Mormons save America?.......2004-02-11
In This collection of stories, not quite short stories and not quite novellas, we see the world after a great war which has thrown the world into chaos and turmoil. Many are still dying, and outside small cities where local governments rule and help maintain order, the bandits on the roads rule with terror.
However, in Utah, the Mormons are building civilization out of chaos and forming government.
The stories were somewhat interresting, however, deeply disturbing. I can't say I cared much for the horrid descriptions of terrible child neclect and abuse in the first story, even though the rest of the story was ok, certain sections left me feeling sickened and disturbed for days afterwards and having more than usual urges to go make sure my kids were tucked in and safely sleeping at night. It also had disturbing paralells to a local case I remember of child neglect/abuse of a little girl who was locked in a closet for years.
The other stories are less emotion-enducing...as there's not really much to them. Basically people trying to fit into the Mormon run society and find thier place within, espically those who are not Mormon.
