Customer Reviews:
Great business dictionary.......2005-02-23
Well to be honest I always had a hard time getting through the piles of books during business school. But this "brick" opened my eyes and I actually ended up reading it out of pure pleasure. If you are remotely interested in business you should get this. It sums up many of the conclusions made by the great economists. Get one - and save yourself the cost of 10 others.
Great Business Tool.......2003-01-14
I got this book as part of my MBA studies in the UK. The whole course on Strategy leverages this book as a reader throughout and it is truly a wonderful collection tools, techniques and models for the student and business manager alike.
A must have for people involved in defining and setting strategy
too much focus on old cases and manufacturing........2002-11-02
Book can do better and be more relevant if it uses more recent examples of companies that have succeeded especially in the IT world.
good read !

Economists approach but Porter is better.......2002-05-02
I bought this book because I was hoping it would provide me with good guidance in terms of how to use analysis techniques that would support my strategy consulting work. It has a heavy economists' leaning. This is both good and bad. It is good in that it gives some tried and true ways of understanding contemporary strategy. It is bad in that it misses out on the many ways and means by which non-economists understand contemporary strategy and is very thick in terms of its descriptions. It is not a "how to" book, that is for sure. Since competition today often seems to defy economic logic, this economic approach can only go so far. And there is still no better economist's approach than Professor Michael Porter's materials and this book certainly adds little to that great body of work.

Book Description
Marketing: Principles and Perspectives is a cutting edge text. In the first edition, we demonstrated this leading coverage with our strong integration of Integrated Marketing Communication and Direct Marketing. In the second edition we continued our modern coverage by integrating cross-functional teams, customer loyalty, and the Internet / technology. The third edition includes an E-Commerce chapter and continues to fully integrate the Internet throughout. The authors not only talk about what marketing is, but prepare the students to be marketers by involving them in interactive exercises which strengthen decision making skills. Marketing, Third Edition offers the latest coverage, quality professor supplements, and an interactive student web tool and still it is approximately $20 less than most principles of marketing competitors.

Book Description
This second edition of Cases in Contemporary Strategy Analysis represents a continuing commitment to examining current business theory in the context of real business situations. It successfully considers how today's rapid technological changes and increasingly international markets compound the difficulties of decision-making.
The seventeen cases included in this book focus on implementation of strategy. Most cases have been selected from companies and managers who are well-known leaders in their industries. Cases from smaller or more obscure companies have been selected for their unique approach to implementing strategy.
Used in conjunction with the best-selling Contemporary Strategy Analysis, Third Edition, or as a stand-alone collection, this casebook provides an invaluable resource for upcoming strategic managers as they learn to successfully formulate and implement strategic decisions in today's changing world.
Customer Reviews:
Nice work by Grant and Neupert.......2001-02-04
I use Cases in Contemporary Strategy Analysis in my Capstone course (final course) for my MBA graduate students. It provides them with excellent insight into corporate decision making and strategic planning processes. The case studies are interesting and rich for discussion. My only criticism is the world of business is so fast paced. I would have like to see an internet site or CD ROM with more current information on the companies. Many of the organizational case studies were dated 1998. A myriad of financial, economic, marketing, and strategic changes occurred since the printing of the text. Overall, I recommend the book for textbook use.

Book Description
This wide-ranging book deals, in a detailed and scholarly way, with the contribution of a systems approach to a range of disciplines from philosophy and biology to social theory and management. It weaves together material from some of the pre-eminent thinkers of the day — Maturana, Varela, Bateson, Merleau-Ponty, Checkland, Giddens, Habermas, Bhaskar, and Luhmann — to create a coherent path from the most fundamental work on philosophical issues of ontology and epistemology through specific domains of knowledge about the nature of information and meaning, human communication, and social intervention right up to the implications of these theoretical developments for action and intervention in real-world affairs.
It will be of interest to scholars in philosophy, biology, information systems, communications, social theory, management science and operational research as well as everyone in the systems community.

Book Description
The implementation of appropriate strategies remains one of the most difficult areas of management. Considerable thought, energy and resources is given over to devising a strategic plan; and it is to the fine detail of the plan that attention turns when things go wrong. The plan, rather than the implementation comes in for scrutiny, because it is less problematic to analyse. Perhaps this is because, whereas the plan can be devised under pollution-free, almost laboratory conditions, the working out of the plan takes place in the real world infected with real world variables. But the whole point of a strategy is that it will be implemented and implemented successfully. Much has been written on change management and transformational leadership all very relevant to strategy implementation but there are comparatively few books which look at the implementation process as a whole. The Implementation Challenge aims to link the numerous concepts and approaches to the subject but recognizes the impact on implementation of the organization as it lives and breathes. From the work of leading thinkers in the field of strategic management, David Hussey has selected contributions specifically focusing on the theme of implementation. Some of the work is to be found in Strategic Change; this, together with new material and four major case studies, makes The Implementation Challenge thoroughly up to date and coherent. It is intended to be thought provoking, and to give practical aid to those involved with achieving successful implementation of their organizations strategic plans and thinking.

Book Description
The dramatic story of Hitler and Stalin's marriage of convenience has been recounted frequently over the past 60 years, but with remarkably little consensus. As the first English-language study to analyze the development, extent, and importance of the Nazi-Soviet economic relationship from Hitler's ascension to power to the launching of Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, this book highlights the crucial role that Soviet economic aid played in Germany's early successes in World War II. When Hitler's rearmament efforts left Germany dangerously short of raw materials in 1939, Stalin was able to offer valuable supplies of oil, manganese, grain, and rubber. In exchange, the Soviet Union would gain territory and obtain the technology and equipment necessary for its own rearmament efforts. However, by the summer of 1941, Stalin's well-calculated plan had gone awry. Germany's continuing reliance on Soviet raw materials would, Stalin hoped, convince Hitler that he could not afford to invade the USSR. As a result, the Soviets continued to supply the Reich with the resources that would later carry the Wehrmacht to the gates of Moscow and nearly cost the Soviets the war. The extensive use in this study of neglected source material in the German archives helps resolve the long-standing debate over whether Stalin's foreign policy was one of expansionism or appeasement.
