    Book Description

Evolutionary economics is attracting increasing interest as a way of understanding the processes which generate particular forms of economic activities and structures. This collection brings together economists who are at the forefront of this new field of enquiry to provide the most comprehensive and authoritative survey available.

    Download Description

It is widely recognised that mainstream economics has failed to translate micro consistently into macro economics and to provide endogenous explanations for the continual changes in the economic system. Since the early 1980s, a growing number of economists have been trying to provide answers to these two key questions by applying an evolutionary approach. This new departure has yielded a rich literature with enormous variety, but the unifying principles connecting the various ideas and views presented are, as yet, not apparent. This volume brings together fifteen original articles from scholars - each of whom has made a significant contribution to the field - in their common effort to reconstruct economics as an evolutionary science. Using meso economics as an analytical entity to bridge micro and macro economics as well as static and dynamic realms, a unified economic theory emerges, offering an entirely new approach to the foundations of economics.

    Book Description

Complex behavior can occur in any system made up of large numbers of interacting constituents, be they atoms in a solid, cells in a living organism, or consumers in a national economy. Analysis of this behavior often involves making important assumptions and approximations, the exact nature of which vary from subject to subject. Foundations of Complex-system Theories begins with a description of the general features of complexity and then examines a range of important concepts, such as theories of composite systems, collective phenomena, emergent properties, and stochastic processes. Each topic is discussed with reference to the fields of statistical physics, evolutionary biology, and economics, thereby highlighting recurrent themes in the study of complex systems. This detailed yet nontechnical book will appeal to anyone who wants to know more about complex systems and their behavior. It will also be of great interest to specialists studying complexity in the physical, biological, and social sciences.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars-The whole is not the sum of the parts;Excellent and scholarly.......2006-02-14

This is a very interesting book. The author demonstrates that she has command over a number of different fields. She exhibits a wide ranging scholarship in this book.In a nutshell, one can categorize the major conclusions she arrives at as the whole is not the sum of the parts alone.Neither a strictly micro or macro approach to the different fields she investigates, using a complex systems framework, yields the idealized types of scientific discovery and knowledge one finds postulated in some philosophy of science discourses that emphasize deductive closure laws.I have one slight criticism of the book, which is why I have subtracted one half a star. The author has a deep general understanding of the Keynes-Knight distinction between risk and uncertainty in economics(and in social sciences). However, she lacks an understanding of the specifics of Keynes's approach in the A Treatise on Probability(1921;TP).She is unaware of Keynes's interval estimate approach to probability, his index,w,used to measure the completeness of the evidence ,ranging from ignorance through partial knowledge to a complete information set,and Keynes's conventional coefficient of weight and risk, which treats risk, based on the purely deductive laws of probability, as a special case. This would be a very minor criticism if she had integrated the work of D.Ellsberg(Ellsberg's 2001 book,Risk,Ambiguity, and Decision gives a modern, improved and updated version of the TP) and B.Mandelbrot into her discussions involving economics, risk, and uncertainty(Ellsberg's Ambiguity with his rho and alpha indexes and the wild versus mild risk of the cauchy distribution versus normal distribution as discussed by Mandelbrot).Unfortunately,Ellsberg's contributions are not discussed at all while Mandelbrot receives a single footnote that completely ignores his contributions to economics. She can certainly obtain a 5-star rating by bringing out a revised edition in which the original, technical, pioneering work of Keynes is covered followed by the modern and updated contributions of Ellsberg and Mandelbrot.

    5 out of 5 stars a fascinating book -- recommended to philosophers.......2002-10-26

Philosophers of science need to read this book: the hands-on
account of how three sciences work is a healthy
corrective to the usual practice of writing philosophy of science
without actually knowing how the science is done.

    5 out of 5 stars A Professional work.......2000-03-30

This is an amazing work. Sunny Auyang has written an easily comprehenedible book on applications of complexity theories to economics, biology and physics. It is a professional writing to professionals in different fields. One needs college level maths and some physics to fully grasp it but she has made minimum use of mathematical symbols. Her writing flows, the examples are clear, some illuminate important issues in the applied fields, some are just homey bits that convey an idea insightfully. A lot of depth in her philosophical explorations of the complexity ideas. I consider this to be a must for any person studying or instructing in system thinking.

      Book Description

The central tradition of mainline economics deals with only one way of making a living: namely, producing useful goods and services. But there is another way of getting ahead-- through conflict or the "dark side"--that is by appropriating what others have produced. Logically parallel or military aggression and resistance, the dark side includes nonmilitary activities such as litigation, strikes and lockouts, takeover contests, and bureaucratic back-biting struggles. This volume brings the analysis of conflict into the mainstream of economics. Part I explores the causes, conduct, and consequences of conflict as an economic activity. Part II delves more deeply into the evolutionary sources of our capacities, physical and mental, for both conflict and cooperation.

        Description:
Binmore and Samuelson [Binmore, K., Samuelson, L., 1999. Evolutionary drift and equilibrium selection. Review of Economic Studies 66, 363-393] have shown that perturbations (drift) are crucial to study the stability properties of Nash equilibria. We contribute to this literature by providing a behavioural foundation for models of evolutionary drift based on the similarity theory introduced by Tversky [Tversky, A., 1977. Features of similarity. Psychological Review 84, 327-352]. The innovation is that we derive the similarity relations from the perception that each agent has about how well he is playing the game. We obtain different models of drift depending on how we model that perception and show the conditions for each model to stabilize elements in components of Nash equilibria that are not subgame-perfect.

          Book Description

The new institutional economics offers one of the most exciting research agendas in economics today. Economic Evolution questions if it can explain the processes of economic change. It explores three of the main approaches within the new institutional economics: the new theory of the firm, Nelson and Winter's evolutionary economics and game theoretical accounts of sponateous evolution. Close analysis reveals that the approaches differ on such fundamental issues as the meaning of terms like "institution" and "evolution." Economic Evolution also uncovers two evolutionary mechanisms that govern processes of economic change in all of these approaches.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An important analysis of new institutional economics.......1998-10-11

Vromens book is an excellent overview and analysis of the foundations of new institutional economics. For those wondering what new institutional economics means, new institutional economics is a shift from the highly abstract assumptions of neoclassical economics towards considering some of the realities of institutions and behavioural norms in society and the way they evolve in historical time. Vromens book is very readable and well presented, and would be accessable to the (intelligent) lay reader. The book is however derived from his PhD dissertation, and contains plenty of content for the focused researcher in economics or people in other disciplines who want to find out what this new area of economic thought can mean for them.

The focus of the book is rather difficult to categorise as the book covers a LOT of ground. Vromen analyses the theory of the firm in its historical context (Coase, Williamson, Simon etc)and analyzes more recent new institutional literature on the nature of the firm. He contrasts natural selection and adaptive learning as evolutionary mechanisms, discusses Nelson and Winters evolutionary theory, discusses functionalism in biology and in new institutional economics, and analyzes cultural evolutionary processes. Together with Malcolm Rutherfords 'Institutions in Economics', this would have to be one of the best and most comprehensive overviews and introductions to new institutional and evolutionary thought. A great read and highly recommended.

                  Description:
We consider a model of evolution in games in which agents occasionally receive opportunities to switch strategies, choosing between them using a probabilistic rule. Both the rate at which revision opportunities arrive and the probabilities with which each strategy is chosen are functions of current normalized payoffs. We call the aggregate dynamics induced by this model excess payoff dynamics. We show that every excess payoff dynamic is well-behaved: regardless of the underlying game, each excess payoff dynamic admits unique solution trajectories that vary continuously with the initial state, identifies rest points with Nash equilibria, and respects a basic payoff monotonicity property. We show how excess payoff dynamics can be used to construct well-behaved modifications of imitative dynamics, and relate them to two other well-behaved dynamics based on projections.

                    4 out of 5 stars Really Helpful.......2007-01-09

I got this book in order to refresh myself on the media planning process and it was very helpful. The different topics were clearly outlined and reflected a logical thought process.
It even goes into non-traditional media which I have not seen in any other books.
My only disappointment related to the way it addressed planning in markets which do NOT have exhaustive media information. I'm sure that was not the intent of the book anyway, so that's my problem.
A good, informative read...must see for new media buyers/planners.

5 out of 5 stars A great primer and information resource!.......2003-07-28

I've worked in the media departments of two major advertisers and a major advertising agency--and I use this book all the time when I need help on any training sessions I am conducting. It is very thorough with all information you need, but also concise enough not to get bogged down.

For my own use, I find the section on Media Planning Resources on the Internet and invaluable tool to find more information.

A must for any media planner's or buyer's bookshelf!

5 out of 5 stars Sound Media Basics.......2003-02-14

One of the mysteries of the UK ad scene is that there is no good, up-to-date, practitioner-written textbook on media planning, so the arrival of an updated version of an established US text is doubly welcome.

Jack Sissors and (mostly, as a result of Mr Sissor's ill-health) Roger Baron have done a very thorough and comprehensive job of explaining and illustrating the basics, from how to get information about any given medium to how to put together a strategy and a detailed plan.

Unsurprisingly, the material is purely US-based, and therefore includes, for example, considerable discussion of the problems of reconciling different area definitions; but analyses such as how to weight a plan by region or medium can apply, suitably modified, anywhere.

There is a wide range of suggestions for (mostly) websites from which to seek detailed information, some of which may be both unfamiliar and useful to non-US readers - the MPA's analysis of the effects of position and ad size in magazines is a good example....

Many of the references may seem old, but, as the authors make clear, they have gone back to the classic originals of basic thinking - and much of this still holds good today.

The new edition is up-to-date, with quite extensive discussion of the internet as a medium, and slightly more limited coverage of cross-media and multi-media planning. Conversely, data fusion barely gets a mention - and is not in the index. Nor are optimisers, which are not discussed in any detail - merely treated as a tool of the trade - or modelling, which gets a brief half page on p374.

If the book has a weakness, it is in the area of evaluation, which gets several mentions, but little detailed discussion. In an era where effectiveness has marched up advertisers' list of priorities, this may need addressing next time.

Nonetheless, any would-be media person should read it, and learn.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Anyone Getting Started in Media Planning.......2003-02-09

Roger Baron's book goes to great lengths to cover all the basics having to do with the media planning discipline. This book should be required reading for all entry level media professionalls as well as those considering a career in media planning. Well written, good flow. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Great for beginners... but for directors and managers... not.......2002-07-26

Unless you want to refresh your memory on what GRPs, impressions, and reach and frequency are, or unless you want to know the definitions of these terms, this book isn't for you.

An earlier edition of this book was one of my first books when I have just entered the ad media planning field and I found it really interesting.

However, now that I have more than 8 years of working in the field, it seems to be a bit superficial. There's limited information on the debates between effective frequency, recency, and the proposed 'mid-point' of effective recency. There's also limited discussions on the role of ad media research as the media world explodes (e.g., R&F for the Net?), or the role of different channels/media beyond TV, radio, press, direct mails, and magazines.
