Superb resource book.......2007-05-03
I had this series of books before - loaned them out at work and never got them back (go figure!). Happy to have found them again here.
Even company money could be spent more effectively.......2003-06-17
For any medium to advanced trainer, group leader, or presenter, this book does not raise any new methods of improving audience participation. In fact, the "cheese" factor is enough to choke even the most discriminating mouse.
Having said that, if you're a beginner with little to no background in or exposure to group training, then this book may help give you a little head start to realize how to engage an audience through active participation.
It's only because of the potential to aide a beginner that I rated this a 2. Otherwise, it's sitting with a lone star.
Decent.......2001-07-25
I was expecting more. But it certainly lived up to its title. Maybe my expectations were a little to hight.
I have yet to try any of the examples yet, but I am certainly waiting to try.
It's not that great........2000-01-30
This book wasn't that great. There were VERY few ideas that I would use. I wouldn't recommend buying this book.
Great for any Organizational leader!.......1999-01-25
I used a bunch of ideas from this book for my position in a student organization. A definite must for programs on dry material. It never hurts to have an ace up your sleeve, and this book is it!

Superb resource book.......2007-05-03
I had this series of books before - loaned them out at work and never got them back (go figure!). Happy to have found them again here.
Great book for great ideas.......2007-03-14
Remember when you were in arts and craft classes, this book is like that
Great.......2007-01-12
Excellent quality and turnaround time, received when promised. The games are fun, and not immature for adults!
Patronising rubbish.......2006-11-04
It's strange how so many businesspeople I meet tend to be right-wing, anti-communist and great believers in personal freedom, yet run their businesses like Stalin's Russia. Workers are motivated by a mixture of fear and ambition and any individual opinion that deviates from the party line is seen as a threat.
I'm a manager. All I ask of my staff is that they're honest, work hard and treat everyone with respect. That's it. For my part I give them a clear idea of what I expect and make sure that they have the tools to do the job and receive recognition of their achievements. What I don't do is mess with their heads.
This book is symptomatic of a trend in management culture where it is not enough to ask people to do their jobs well, we now have to re-engineer their souls. The aim of this book is to motivate staff with 'fun' activities in staff training sessions, but the reality is intrusive and patronising. One game invites workers to mention a childhood achievement that they were particularly proud of and then get other members of the team to discuss it. Well, I believe in personal freedom and part of that is not feeling obliged to talk about personal things in a work setting.
Chairman Mao had his 'Cultural Revolution' and this smacks of the same attitude. It's not enough for people to do as they're told, they now have to have the right attitude and if they're not willing to be team players, they're out. It's like 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'.
Buy this book to find out how emotionally dysfunctional people struggle to motivate teams and get it horribly wrong.
Big book of Lousy Ideas.......2005-10-06
This was a complete waste of money! The ideas were stale and elementary. Do not waste your money or your time flipping through it.

Some Good Exercises.......2007-05-13
For anyone planning to give a presentation on leadership or develop a class on leadership, this book has quite a few helpful exercises. On the flip side, some exercises are better classified as ice breakers and meeting openers than true leadership exercises.
Great resource for future leaders!.......2006-03-31
I have been working as an intern in the recreation field for the last six months and have felt so frustrated with the relationship(s) between mentor and "protégé" in my profession. My frustrations lead to an interest in researching leadership education and mentor training, and eventually to finding this book.
Like the authors, I am also a firm believer that leadership can be taught, and more importantly that it needs to become a vital part of college and work training curriculum. After reading this book I felt liberated and energized, ready to lead others and to help others lead more responsibly and effectively.
I have recommended this book to many of my colleagues and friends, as a great resource for in-service trainings, staff meetings, and personal growth as a leader. I might also add that with some skepticism that I would ever receive a response, I e-mailed the authors to ask for their feedback and suggestions on my thesis topic. To my surprise they did in fact return my e-mail, and provided me with a lot of great information and references to help me on my journey. For their kind words, encouragement, and for this wonderful book I am very grateful!
Cudos to Lois Hart and Charlotte Wasiman!!!!!.......2005-12-05
I have known Lois Hart for over 20 years, and have enjoyed many of her books. The Leadership Training Activity Book--50 Exercises for Building Effective Leaders, is one of my favorites! It has practical exercises that are relevant to Leadership issues in the 21st Century. The activities are excellent and include detailed instructions--a Trainer's dream! Each activity can be utilized in a variety of ways, depending on time, participants, issues and culture. The Forward, by Jim Kouzes, co-author of The Leadership Challenge, is impressive and indicates his support of this body of work. I found the Organizational Leadership Assessment very useful when putting together a needs assessment for my new client groups.
Cudos to Lois Hart, Ed.D., and Charlotte S. Waisman, Ph.D. for putting together a great collection of useful, pertinent, and profound exercises to support our leaders in their development.
You will not be disappointed with Hart's latest book!.......2005-09-09
I have been an educator and adult trainer for 30 years. I have a full library of activities books by Lois Hart. When building new classes (sometimes on the same topic, but with a different purpose) I continue to count on her manuals of activities as my most valuable reference materials. I highly recommend the Leadership Training Activity Book to trainers and educators who are responsible for curriculum development
According to all accelerated learning theory, adults learn best when actively involved in the topic. Therefore learning activities are very important when providing people experiential learning. Learning activities built around the subject matter helps them "get it" so that the concept "sticks" in their minds. I have been delighted with the materials I found in her books on developingl eaders and many others written by this author, Lois B. Hart.
It is difficult to create a totally new workshop to teach concepts and principles such as Leadership, Team building, and Management skills. I am grateful to find resources that have well thought-out learning exercises. I have been very happy to apply ideas and training techniques to help explain concepts from Hart's books.
As I've found with all her books, this newest book not only saves time developing the course, but provided fun, entertaining and interesting ways to make a point, explain how a method works, or give a true-to-life example. My supervisor, manager, and leader audiences have given very complimentary evaluations on classes I have developed around her activities.
I also recommend you buy her 50 Activities to Develop Leaders Vol I. Faultless Facilitation, Training Methods That Work, and Learning from Conflict. These save me many hours of preparation time because they have easy to follow instructions. The directions explain the objectives, provide a list of supplies required and tell me how much time the activity will take.
Furthermore, these books have provided inspiration. Sometimes I have adapted the ideas in the books and altered them. I have used them when training all types of groups with a variety of different levels of experience and knowledge. You won't be disappointed.
It is comforting to know that programs presented in these reference manuals are based on research and created by a knowledgeable professional who is an expert in the topic. The activities have been tested and carefully constructed so that even an inexperienced trainer can follow the directions to a successful guided activity.
Buy this book! You won't be disappointed........2005-08-03
I've used many of Lois Hart's books in my 25 years of training and consulting so was very interested in seeing her newest contribution, The Leadership Training Activity Book, written with Charlotte Waisman. As one who is certified in Accelerated Learning and bases workshops on participative learning, I found this book priceless. It begins with exercises that set the tone for a workshop and includes many valuable activities including three different leadership assessments. Its exercises include such areas as conflict resolution, negotiation skills, diversity, team building, presentation skills, meeting management as well as applications to help the leader develop his/her coaching and teaching skills. Each activity has clearly been road-tested and is presented with thorough, step-by-step instructions. How wonderful that someone of Lois' caliber has taken the time to put together such a helpful resource for those of us in the field. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
Book Description
In an age of ethical decay at organizations of every type, a call is being sounded for accountability. Accordingly, companies must educate their employees and executives regarding acceptable practice. The Business Ethics Activity Book presents an array of provocative activities that will help encourage a more ethical approach to:
* Leadership: promoting courage, commitment, and moral responsibility * Workplace conduct: building an ethical environment on individual behavior * Salesmanship: exploring the relationships between sellers and their customers * Management: leading employees by example in daily situations * Teamwork: fostering group behavior that reflects the company's moral outlook
Each section features an interview with a leading ethicist, and every activity provides step-by-step instructions. Also, discussion prompts and suggestions for variations enable the trainer or leader to expand each exercise's application. These exercises will push organizations to challenge the climate of questionable or unexamined ethics and recommit themselves to responsible business methods.

Not Worth The Money.......2007-01-09
I purchased this book for my college students in hopes that it would be some type of hands on activity about Ethics that would make a statement. This book was of no value to me what so ever. It was a waste of money.
Book Description
“Ries and Trout taught me everything I know about branding, marketing, and product management. When I had the idea of creating a very large thematic community on the Web, I first thought of Positioning....”—David Bohnett, Chairman and Founder of GeoCities
A handsome edition of the original 1981 text, this 20th Anniversary Edition makes available to business and marketing professionals—including tens of thousands of Ries and Trout groupies, worldwide—the work that forever changed the way marketing strategy is done. This new edition features commentary from the authors that offers fresh insight into why “positioning” a product in a prospective customer’s mind is still the most important strategy in business, and includes numerous examples of campaigns that followed, or didn’t follow, Ries and Trout’s thinking.

Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind, 20th Anniversary Edition (Purchased on 09/04/2007) .......2007-10-05
I still haven't received my purchase, so reviewing it will be a tad bit difficult...
Got inspired!.......2007-09-21
I've got inspired from the basics in positioning. It delivers good examples of many American companies' positioing. I got inspired so that I can get my paper done very soon.
The best book ever on marketing/advertising/brand management.......2007-09-13
I make every new employee read Positioning no matter what their job description because it is really a book about the "battle for the consumer's mind", and that battle is waged in every department of every organization.
Positioning is the rule book for marketing success and the great thing is all the examples. Yes they are somewhat dated, but they make the rules easy to understand.
This is the book nobody at Ford read before they redisigned the Taurus from number 1 in sales to a hole in the ground.
If you work in brand management or advertising you must read this book. It should be stashed in a "break-glass-get-book" thing at every exit of every ad agency.
If you are studying marketing at college, you should memorize every word in the book and major in something else, and come out with the equivalent of a double major.
The importance of perception.......2007-05-13
If there's one thing that makes Positioning a classic and something that should be on the reading list of any marketer is the fact that it highlights what is the core of any marketing- perception is reality. It doesn't matter how good your product `really' is, or how hard you try, what matters is how your target perceives you vs competition. That basic truth, and how you could occupy the most desired position in the target's mind is the crux of this book. Perhaps some of the examples could get updated, but bottom line, this is the definitive book to read for any aspiring marketer.
- Mainak Dhar, author, Brand Management 101: 101 Lessons from Real-World Marketing
outdated.......2007-03-30
Positioning makes a few basic points that are helpful for someone who is not familiar with marketing basics. However, the examples are so outdated that some now disprove the authors' arguments. The more detailed chapters make less sense in an electronic culture. This book is really only useful now for those broad, basic ideas in the first chapters.
Book Description
The book that changed marketing forever is now updated for the new millennium
In 1986, Marketing Warfare propelled the industry into a new, modern sensibility and a world of unprecedented profit. Now, two decades later, this Annotated Edition provides the latest, most powerful tactics that have become synonymous with the names Ries and Trout. New content includes in-depth analyses of some of the biggest marketing successes and blunders of the past two decades—including Volkswagen, Sony, Coca Cola, Budweiser, IBM, and McDonalds—along with annotated reproductions of winning and losing ads.
Customer Reviews:
Marketing 101.......2007-07-20
Regardless of whether you like the "warfare" analogies or not, the concepts discussed in this book is Marketing 101 for marketers.
First Ries/Trout explain which method of attack your company should use depending on its position in the marketplace. Then they describe what each position should do. Then they use some great classic case studies like the beer wars, cola wars, and computer wars.
Usually I hate these "outdated" books but the content in here is classic. They've updated the book and critiqued their own predictions made 20 years ago. For example, with over 50% of the PC marketshare, they were certain that IBM would remain the leader. Ooops.
Highly recommended for marketers.
Of all the books, this one is the weakest.......2007-03-30
I found this one to be the weakest of all the books by Ries and Trout. As Creative Director of AUDIN Web Design, it just didn't capture my interest like their other books. Don't get me wrong, I think these authors are geniuses and I love their books. This one just didn't do it for me; I think it was the warfare motif. I'm not a pacifist, but it just didn't work for me: Warfare as Marketing. The funny thing is that I actually bought this book twice: once ten years ago in paper back and then again in hardback more recently. That goes to show you how forgettable I thought this book was. If you are on a real tight budget, buy a different book by these authors.
missing book.......2007-03-24
today i have not received this book yet.could you inform me when this book would be delivered, please?
I AM A FAN OF JACK TROUT.......2007-02-02

You must compete to survive, You must be intelligence to survive, and You must be different to survive.
Jack Trout explains the battle of MARKET forces and how to survive in it,
Still thinking about buying the book, You may feel the need to read this book after a hard competition!
Marketing Warfare.......2007-01-13
Excellent book! it explains marketing to non-marketing people. It is very useful to those with limited marketing knowledge.

Used in MBA program.......2006-04-06
I did not think this book was that useful in that it does not reach any techniques but rather it allows you to glean ideas from mistakes that companies have made. It presents different cases from the real world but coming from a background of no marketing experience, I did not find this technique all that useful.
Great book with a difficult language.......2004-05-10
This is a great book, however, author's use of "difficult" language makes it a hard reading for students. The point of this book should entirely be to emphasize on facts, rather than to showcase author's verbal capabilities.
Bold Retailers and Innovative Products spiral in flaming.......2001-12-06
I took a few technology marketing courses in grad school, and became moderately interested in the process. When I saw "Marketing Mistakes" (1976) for sale at a thrift shop, I snapped it up.
This is actually interesting stuff for anyone interested in the growth and death of businesses, not just for marketing majors.
The eleven case studies describe how a retailer (e.g., Montgomery Ward, which finally augered in last year, and Korvette, a discount chain I barely recollect), product (Du Pont's Corfam, an artificial leather), or grand old toy company (A.C. Gilbert) became moribund or outright crashed and burned.
There was a lot of nostalgia value in these for me. The names and histories evoked memories of advertising campaigns and jingles. Particularly poignant: The terrible last years of A.C. Gilbert, the august maker of chemistry sets and erector sets. They diluted the company name and ruined its reputation by expanding into girl's toys, infant's toys, and cheap discount-market items. Their decline was amazingly swift.
There are lots of lessons here for budding business folk, and for others an opportunity to understand why your favorite stores and products sometimes disappear.

Old Style - Used Car Sales Approach.......2007-07-07
If you want to fit the mold of the old time sales person who can sell ice to eskimos this is your book.
If you want a higher level modern approach that works in complex B2B sales don't buy this book. If your work involves selling to senior level people in corporations or government this book will be of little use to you. It is based on principles which which don't work with the kind of people on which you call.
Try: "Value Forward Selling," "Selling is Dead," and "Same Game, New Rules." Also try the "Advanced Selling" podcast. It's free and state of the art.
Cold Calling Techniques a must read.......2007-06-27
My staff and I are going through this book chapter by chapter every week during the later part of our sales meetings. It is a great way to discuss the age old dilema......"I hate cold calling. This gives the professional salesperson the tools needed to get over the fear, and distaste of making the inital contact whether door to door, or on the phone. I would recomend this book to all salespeople, sales leaders, and or managers. You may not agree with everything written....we don't, but it provides a forum for your team to discuss what they feel will work, might work, or will not work. It's a great read.
This Book Gets A Gold Star.......2007-05-14
Each year I read approx. 25 books. I keep a list on my computer, and those that stand out and provide above average advice get a gold star. This book got such a star.
Schiffman does a great job of working with the reader on the cold calling efforts that are so important to sales professionals. Many people try to discredit cold-calling and looking for ways around it (networking is a very important tool, but only when a compliement to other calling methods!), and this book shines the light on the best practices of picking up the phone and being heard.
Cold Calling Techniques Indeed.......2007-05-07
Stephan Schiffman is a great author. This book is so easy to read and Schiffman gets right down to the point. His techniques really do work and it take the negative connotation out of "cold calling" and gives the caller more confidence. I highly recommend this book.
First Cold Calling Book..........2007-02-06
I haven't read any other cold calling books. As a result, I don't know how this compares with others that you might be looking to buy. I can say, though, that I have just started my first sales job, and I found this book extremely helpful. It started off a little weak with the typical formulas about how many calls lead to how many proposals and sales, but when it got into the mechanics of a cold call, and tips on leaving voicemail, I found a lot of helpful information.
