Customer Reviews:
As reviewed by New York Times best selling Author Ellen Tanner Marsh.......2006-10-30
The passion for gambling dates back to ancient times, with poker being one of the oldest and most popular forms. Author Michael Stelzer became fascinated with the game and convinced that his knowledge of math could help him understand and beat the odds, decided to investigate its complexities from a mathematical standpoint. Letting the chips fall where they may, he formed his own astute conclusions on poker's risks and rewards, and his findings make up this terrific little handbook. Mathematical Strategies to Winning Casino Poker, which is one that good poker player can't afford to be without.
Whether you are a novice or an expert player, you'll find lots of fascinating tips and tricks to get the upper hand on your opponents. Stelzer suggests that the games are actually not stacked as highly against the player as you might think. Any good player can win big money on poker and walk away with those winnings, he found, and this discovery so buoyed Stelzer's own confidence that he began hitting the casinos himself to play.
Lucidly and elegantly, Stelzer gives the reader a concise history of the game as well as those all important poker basics. His thorough analysis of the various poker hands, as well as their accompanying mathematical proofs, is straightforward enough so that anyone can benefit.
Readers will learn playing and betting strategies, such as play or fold decisions, hand derivations and game strategies, how to manage a bankroll and more. Encompassing years of personal research in casino poker games, Stelzer's book is packed with enough information to help anyone play better and enjoy poker more. Knowledge is power, and with this handy guide, any reader can have the confidence to win.

In his new book, Mathematical Strategies to Winning Casino Poker, engineering Ph.D. and mathematician Michael Stelzer shares simple playing and betting strategies that guarantee poker players will leave both tables and tournaments as winners.
Providing a brief history of poker and basic playing strategies, Stelzer's approach does not require players to have any previous skill or experience, nor does it involve learning a complicated system or counting cards, making it practical for players of all levels of experience in both casinos and private games.
Stelzer's study of poker began as a hobby based on his extensive mathematics background. The discovery that many poker games offer players odds as favorable as 50/50 inspired Stelzer to test gaming strategies of six popular poker variations. Using computer simulation, Stelzer was able to establish strategies for determining whether or not a hand should be betted on based on desirability.
Stelzer encourages responsibility in betting and gambling, emphasizing that Mathematical Strategies is not a "get-rich-quick" book. However, players who follow these tested probability methods will find that they can minimize losses by folding undesirable hands while capitalizing on virtually guaranteed wins.

RULE OF 70?.......2002-08-18
I PURCHASED THIS BOOK AND IT SEEMS TO BE GOOD EXCEPT THAT WHEN THE AUTHOR REFERS TO THE "RULE OF 70", I HAVE ALWAYS HEARS IT REFERRED TO AS "THE RULE OF 72". IS THIS AN ERROR OR A TYPO?
Fun With Financial Math.......2001-12-12
Here is a handy guide to life's financial problems. It is more than just an inventory as it provides the steps necessary for working with the numbers that underlie the solutions. You aren't a math wiz? No problem. Every example, and there are so very many of them, comes complete with simple words and an easy walkthrough to the solution. They build on each other, much as our real world financial problems are extensions of each other. Question: What is the world's most powerful financial force? Answer: Compound interest, of course. It is easily applied and can be made to work for anyone. The author suggests using a pocket calculator, and for most of the examples it will suffice. The more adventurous reader will want a spreadsheet, as the more involved (and realistic) examples/problems have many parts. A descriptive phrase can then accompany each number, and the rather straightforward formulas can be programmed at the start. All in all this is an excellent primer for the realities of money. The author's humorous touch adds to the book's enjoyment and utility.
All The Math You Need To Get Rich - Definitely.......2001-10-18
Mr. Hershey's lighthearted tome takes a humorous yet enlightening approach to providing clarification on a subject that frightens many - crunching the numbers. If math was one of the subjects you avoided like the plague in high school, you might think this book isn't for you, and yet, it's the perfect guide for those that might find math a little unsettling. Loaded with clear examples of everyday financial situations, it's easy to track down the answer to questions many people face on a day to day basis. I especially liked the emphasis on the effect of compounding interest and the details on calculating investments in chapter 6 and 7. One word of caution though, if you're a big time gambler, just waiting for your horse to come in, skip chapter 3. In a nutshell, if you want clear advice on understanding investments, percentages, the odds of winning or how you can strategize on long term goals, this book is the place to find it. Even for the weak of heart when it comes to numbers.

Not Good Enough.......2002-12-17
There were some typos; not organized well enough; some sections were unclear; and it didn't explain some of the problems enough.
Even though it had some good sections, I think this is a poor book on Business Math.

Good Book.......2000-02-18
Practical Merchandising Math is a very enlighting book. The Practice Questions are very helpful in learning the basics. From start to finish I found this book well done. I would only hope for deeper explanations. I devoured this book in about a week. Very well laid out. One chapter leads into another chapter very well. Again, my only hope (not a complaint) is to find a book just like this one with more advanced discussions based on real world scenarios. That's not to say that the examples used in this book were not real world scenarios ... they were simplified examples of real world scenarios. I recommend this book to anyone learning the art of inventory management, ordering systems analysis and planning for sales.

EXCELLENT BOOK EASY TO UNDERSTAND.......2007-01-12
Im a college student and when I first started using this book I said to myself this is like H.S math. Little did I know it does get more complicated but its on a college level as you go on. It takes you back to the basic mathematics and then to a college level mathematics. I liked the book very much so. There is also a answer key in the book (but only for the the odd #'s)which is very useful as well.
great book, alot of examples.......2002-01-26

Excellent textbook!.......2000-04-28
This book was incredibly helpful for a college class in Business Math. Many of the adults in my class had not studied any sort of math in years. This book made the subject easy with great examples succinct and thorough summaries. Recommend it for other teachers in the same area.
Good review of basic business math!.......1999-04-29
There are several typos in this book, but don't let that get you down. This is an excellant review of business math. It begins with the basics of operations, and then progresses to more complex formulas. It will help everyone from business majors to consumers to better manage their money.

Bus. Math Essentials Ok!.......2001-08-10
After taking a course in Business Math. using this book, I am better prepared for the Business world. Only error I can find is that they have on occasion given incorrect answers in both the work areas of the book and the self-check answers which are located at the rear of the book.
I highly recommend this book to those who are either in a business math course or those who merely want to learn at their own speed.

If you are a woodworker with zest, many of the projects are too basic and I wouldn't recommend this book to midlevel woodworkers.
Good Enough for someone just starting in woodworking..
