5 out of 5 stars An Effective Management Tool For Managing Right.......2007-10-05

I am a business consultant for client companies whose business size is $30-50 million sales.I have been consulting for 27 years.I continue to find department heads and general management lacking the experience or know-how in establishing goals for their departments, associates or the over-all organization.

The subject tool, provides a common sense method for jump-starting management in the establishment of departmental and organization goals.I use this tool as a instructional approach. I have found that clients improve their communications and specific action. The tool gives the manager confidence.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Phrases for Setting Performance Goals.......2006-02-23

Lots of great ideas and thoughts to better express a behavior.

3 out of 5 stars Perfect Phrases for Setting Performance Goals - not so perfect.......2006-02-17

My reason for purchasing the book was to have a resouce for our employees to use as they are writing their goal statements based on the SMART goal matrix. I did not find it as helpful as I was hoping in demonstrating what a good, specific, measurable goals looks like. I think it gives you a few beginning words but should have expanded more within the examples.

2 out of 5 stars Perfect Phrases for Setting Performance Goals.......2004-08-07

When I order this book, I thought I will get lots of ready-to-use "Goals" which I can esay to set my subordinate's Goals. But I am very disappoint. Lots of Goals listing in the books are actually the working items not goals. Like "Deposit completed backups...", "Schedule all planned shutdown...". Therefore this book help me to setup the work items of my subordinate not set the goals.

5 out of 5 stars The Guiding Merriman.......2007-08-16

The most complete book for understanding the whats and hows of retirement planning and investing for retirement. Complete with data to support the ideas the author presents.

5 out of 5 stars Review of overall subject matter .......2007-05-30

One of the best references on the subject of retirement & Investing I have read so far. Step by step method for securing income during retirement. Intruduces a number of strategies Investors don't want you to know about. I have recommended this book to several of my friends who are also close to retirement. For those close to retirement, it should be front and center in their libraries. A lot of facts backing up recommendations. Short read.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Read and Excellent Advice.......2007-03-21

I found Merriman's writing style easy to read. He does an excellent job of covering the basics of investing including asset allocation.

Merriman's suggestion of holding 50% foreign stocks and 50% U.S. stocks was a little surprising to me. I was not expecting such a high allocation to foreign stocks. Vanguard, for example, suggests no more than 20% foreign stocks. Merriman makes a compelling case for holding 50% foreign stocks, but past performance of foreign stocks relative to U.S. stocks does not necessarily mean future performance will be the same.

Another surprise was no mention of REITs. For a book published in 2005, I expected to see at least a 10% allocation to U.S. REITs.

The last surprise was his recommendation of DFA funds compared to Vanguard funds. He tries to make the case the 1% of assets fee per year to a DFA advisor is more than offset by the superior performance of a DFA fund portofolio compared to a Vanguard portfolio. Most of the extra return is not due to lower DFA expense ratios, but the fact that DFA offers more asset class choices than Vanguard. I'm a big Vanguard fan, plus manage my own portfolio.....so I'm not sold on the DFA approach.

Over-all an excellent book.

I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including:
The Richest Man in Babylon
Bogle on Mutual Funds: New Perspectives for the Intelligent Investor
The Millionaire Next Door
The Four Pillars of Investing: Lessons for Building a Winning Portfolio
A Random Walk Down Wall Street: The Time-Tested Strategy for Successful Investing, Ninth Edition

The Coffeehouse Investor: How to Build Wealth, Ignore Wall Street, and Get On With Your Life
The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing
Wealth: Grow It, Protect It, Spend It, and Share It
All About Asset Allocation.

5 out of 5 stars Better Book Than Most Books Offering Financial Advice.......2007-01-21

Merriman's book offers readers a review of different portfolio options with a focus on the risk of each portfolio. Most books and discussion of investment options fail to consider risk and thereby mislead readers into thinking that one can simply repeat the strategy that produced spectacular investment returns in a prior year.

This book provides example portfolios that were constructed using the most convincing economic theory to-date developed by leading financial and economic scientists at the highest regarded economic schools in the world (Chicago, Stanford, Yale). The probability of having greater portfolio returns than most people by receiving the average return of many asset classes (financial markets) is higher when investors follow the relatively low risk options Merriman provides.

I highly recommend this book to readers of all knowledge levels. I also highly recommend the firm Merriman Capital Management for its low fees, excellant customer service, and access to the mutual funds of Dimensional Fund Advisors. The portfolio returns of DFA funds have far exceeded the portfolio returns of most actively managed funds and even passively managed funds from Vanguard and Fidelity in all of the last 5 years including 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding the importance of Asset Classes.......2006-04-21

This book, written by a money manager with 40 years of experience in the field, makes it crystal clear how diversification using asset classes can increase your return while reducing risk. It offers fundamentally sound advice while rejecting the "get rich quick" mentality. If you want to sleep better when you retire, read this book.

                Book Description

This book contains a comprehensive treatment of the theory of production in a long-period framework. The issues dealt with include prices and income distribution, economic growth, joint production, fixed capital, scarce natural resources (both renewable and exhaustible), and heterogeneous labor. The issues are treated analytically; in addition, the book's introduction provides a history of the subject.

4 out of 5 stars Theory of Production.......2003-05-10

First, let me say that this book is for intermediate students of economics or professors, not for the layman.

The book contains a throughout treatment of Sraffarian-von Neumann type production theory; coupled with a brief intoduction
to various theories of distribution. The perspective of the book
is on the Cambridge-UK side of the so-called Cambridge controversy. Production sets are inherently non-connected (in particular they are not differentiable manifolds), consisting of a list of Leontieff type input-output vectors. What the authors succeed in doing is bringing out the (many) interesting insights this perspective leads to; and since the book contains a very skillfully written historical dimension, it is altogether enjoyable reading.
On the back of the book P. Samuelson writes in a review that he expects to wear down a copy every year or two. I don't know if everybody would read it that much; but the book does cover material which standard text-books miss completely: Joint production (not just as a possibility within general assumptions but its implications), the debate on "capital aggregates" (the Cambridge controversy), and so forth.
I would recommend this book to any economist, who wishes to get a glimse into a world where "aggregate capital" is considered a misfit of imagination. I would in fact recommend this book to any economist, who wishes another perspective on the theory of production. I don't see it as being necessarily in opposition to neo-classical theory, more as supplementary to Arrow-Debreu theory (of which it may be seen as a special case, though the authors argue against this viewpoint). The Cambridge-UK perspective does, however, pose a challenge to macroeconomic modeling with production functions and all of that. And after all, since so many excellent economists chose to side with Sraffa, it would be strange if they did not arrive at some exciting results and insights - wouldn't it ?
