A triumph in the person of one young woman.......1999-09-25
I most strongly relate to Grandma Rose and inter-inlaw relations with Grandma Myrna, yet am not too old to relate to Ruthie. This strip is the first thing I read each morning, yet the book is a well-thumbed reference on my reading table. I quote everyone in the family liberally, so don't start with me - I have Mace in my pocketbook!
HA HA HA HA HA HA.......1999-03-05
I have 5 nieces and its great to see that someone will make little girls how they really are! Ruthie rules! Anyone who has little girls now will tell you sugar and spice are out..its mud and mischief for the 90's and beyond! Great to see the old stereotype crumbling. Except for Charles Schultz "lucy" most little girls in comic strips have been portrade the same way....Mostly sugar and spice and everything nice! HA! Thanks for reading NT
Ruthie rules!.......1999-01-03
Ruthie is in the tradition of Little Lulu,Annie, and Krazy Kat, if you think of her as a girl. Funny, silly, deceptive and subversive, she's hard not to like if you can appreciate a complicated woman. You'll wish she was your childhood sweetheart, even when she's lying outright, making up the most childish nonsense, or just being Ruthie. Not as brilliant as Calvin and Hobbes, but One Big Happy will do.
This book is One Big Happy Read!!!!!!!.......1999-01-03
All of this fun is definitely Rick Detorie's fault. Like his "Should I Spit on Him?", "None of this fun is my Fault" is a fantastic collection of "One Big Happy" moments not to be missed by anyone. As a father of three, I can only say that Rick Detorie has hit the proverbial nail on the head. All of the One Big Happy family is represented, from Frank and Ellen, to Rose and Nick, even Myrna makes an appearence, but this book belongs to Joe and Ruthie and their wonderful view of everyday life. It is said, "Out of the mouth of babes, oft time come gems", from Rick Detorie's Joe and Ruthie we get a veritable "Tiffany's". If you are lucky enough to have "One Big Happy" in your daily newspaper, you will understand how this book can be reviewed so highly. If not, than this book is a must just to see what you're missing. If you have grown up anywhere in America, over the last 40 or so years, there are parts in this book that will have you laughing out loud and nodding at the reality of it all. The rating is 5 stars only because the rating system goes no farther.

In the tradition of the bestselling Friars Club Encyclopedia and Bible (315,000 copies sold), this brand-new, giant collection of laugh-out-loud, hide-it-from-the-kids humor features more than 2,000 saucy jokes and stories grouped thematically into such categories as Marriage, Medicine, Old Age, Kids, and (of course) Sex. Much of the material is attributed to well-known and popular comedians, including Richard Belzer, Gilbert Gottfried, Susie Essman, and Penn Jillette. As a bonus, interviews with a wide variety of stand-up comedians known for their naughtiness— including Mario Cantone, Judy Gold, Jeffrey Ross, Lisa Lampanelli, and many more—are sprinkled throughout.
Sitting down with The Friars Club Private Joke File is like having a front-row seat at one of their infamous Roasts. Whether browsing for a good ice-breaker or perusing it cover to cover, this no-holds-barred compilation will keep readers laughing and blushing for a long, long time.

Friar's Club Private Joke File.......2007-01-16
Fun, easy book to pick up and put down whenever you need a good laugh. Gives you a small insight into some of the raunchy fun that went on in that exclusive club when the masters of comedy were at their prime.
Over 2,000 'very naughty' jokes delight the funny bone........2006-09-24
Prepare to be shocked and amazed: saucy and sometimes raunchy jokes and stories along with hundreds of rich Roast moments come from Friars Club members and are compiled by an editor of the Friars Club Magazine The Epistle. Here are jokes that proved too lurid to be televised, and ones which are uncut and uncensored at that. Over 2,000 'very naughty' jokes delight the funny bone.

Book Description
This is the first publication in English of the anthology that contains Breton's definitive statement on l'humour noir, one of the seminal concepts of Surrealism, and his provocative assessments of the writers he most admired. While some of the authors featured in the Anthology of Black Humor are already well known to American readers-Swift, Kafka, Rimbaud, Poe, Lewis Carroll, and Baudelaire among them (and even then, Breton's selections are often surprising)-many others are sure to come as a revelation.
The entries range from the acerbic aphorisms of Swift, Lichtenberg, and Duchamp to the theatrical slapstick of Christian Dietrich Grabbe, from the wry missives of Rimbaud and Jacques Vache to the manic paranoia of Dali, from the ferocious iconoclasm of Alfred Jarry and Arthur Craven to the offhand hilarity of Apollinaire at his most spontaneous. For each of the forty-five authors included, Breton has provided an enlightening biographical and critical preface, situating both the writer and the work in the context of black humor-a partly macabre, partly ironic, and often absurd turn of spirit that Breton defined as "a superior revolt of the mind."
Andre Breton (1896-1966), the founder and principal theorist of the Surrealist movement, is one of the major literary figures of the past century. His best-known works in English translation include Nadja, Mad Love, The Manifestoes of Surrealism, The Magnetic Fields (with Philippe Soupault), and Earthlight. Mark Polizzotti is the author of Revolution of the Mind: The Life of Andre Breton.
Customer Reviews:
incredible.......2003-02-05
breton's eulogy of surrealist revolt is basically incarnated in this book, which is a collection of insane and eccentric (particularly lacenaire, murderer and poet) figures who, through absurd humor and surrealistic flights of the fantastic, cast serious (sometimes dangerous) doubts on the validity of the Reality Principle. The best in this collection is perhaps Benjamin Peret, the most uncompromising surrealist of them all. His work is completely recalcitrant to mundane reality, forcing it to become magical and, of course, surreal. Admittedly, some of these writers are difficult to penetrate, but the effort is certainly worth it. Jarry especially.
An updated anthology is needed........2001-01-15
Though this edition is revised, a newer collection would be more practical since the advent of post-modern thinking with the likes of Pynchon, Barth, Barthelme, Gaddis, Hawkes, and Heller heading the movement.
This collection is bogged down by Breton's psychoanalytic readings in the author introductions and his grasping for authors and passages to lengthen the page count in order to have a sizable book.
Yet there are names which have long since been forgotten which, due to this collection, are sustained and might later be an aide in their reevaluation.
Highlights include: Grabbe, Allais, Baudelaire, L'Isle-Adam, Cros, Huysmans, Jarry, Rigaut.
This book is only for those who are studying the field and will be a bitter disappointment for anyone else, esp. people looking for a humor collection per se.
Yes.......2001-01-01
I want to vomit right now. Good.
very funny.......1999-06-21
I am writing in response to the person who said that the selections in here are childish. Do you even understand black humour, dadaism, or surealism? Since when is being childish a bad thing?
Uneven, but generally not very funny.......1998-07-25
Andre Breton had selected the forty core texts for this anthology by 1936, but its publication was delayed by World War II until 1945.
Virtually all of the authors were unfamiliar to me, and some are excruciatingly funny, but most are surrealists bogged down in Freudian concepts of the id, ego and superego.
Neither Breton nor the translator, Mark Polizzotti, ever bothers to define Black Humor, but if they did, their definition would be Freudian and out-of-line with more modern views. Most of the pieces selected are, unfortunately, childish, unintelligible and boring.
Life's short and there are a lot of great books to read. This is not one of them
Book Description
Selected and introduced by acclaimed novelist and poet Paul Beatty, Hokum is a liberating, eccentric, savagely comic collection of the funniest writing by black Americans.
This book is less a comprehensive collection of African-American humor than a mix-tape narrative dubbed by a trusted friend—a sampler of underground classics, rare grooves, and timeless summer jams, poetry and prose juxtaposed with the blues, hip-hop, political speeches, and the world’s funniest radio sermon. The subtle musings of Toni Cade Bambara, Henry Dumas, and Harryette Mullen are bracketed by the profane and often loud ruminations of Langston Hughes, Darius James, Wanda Coleman, Tish Benson, Steve Cannon, and Hattie Gossett. Some of the funniest writers don’t write, so included are selections from well-known yet unpublished wits Lightnin’ Hopkins, Mike Tyson, and the Reverend Al Sharpton. Selections also come from public figures and authors whose humor, although incisive and profound, is often overlooked: Malcolm X, Suzan-Lori Parks, Zora Neale Hurston, Sojourner Truth, and W.E.B. Dubois. Groundbreaking, fierce, and hilarious, this is a necessary anthology for any fan or student of American writing, with a huge range and a smart, political grasp of the uses of humor.
Customer Reviews:
It's OK if I like this book too, right?.......2006-04-19
Just wondering. As a (typically?) paranoid Anglo-American, I may not "get" the secret messages in many of the selections that may or may not be there for an African-American reader, but I found most of the selections in this anthology hilarious. If it inspires anyone of any hyphenation to read complete works by Ishmael Reed or Chester Himes, it will have more than served its purpose.

This massive (nearly 700 pages) anthology offers a fascinating survey of black women's humor, compiled from folk sources, the blues, and poetry, fiction, anecdotal recollections, and routines by such comedians as the late Jackie "Moms" Mabley. The title, editor Daryl Cumber Dance informs, is a "playful entreaty" that black women use to encourage each other or to express disbelief in private conversations when swapping jokes and tall tales. Some of the material in Honey, Hush is a bit bawdy and off-color, and Dance, a professor of English at the University of Richmond in Virginia, warns that "humor is often unkind, unfair, and unjust." Enter with an open mind and a willingness to laugh, however, and you'll be sure to have fun.
Book Description
The vibrant humor of African American women is celebrated in this bold and unique collection that the Miami Herald describes as "breathtakingly broad and deep." In this "dazzling anthology" (Publishers Weekly), Daryl Cumber Dance has collected the often hard-hitting, sometimes risqu, always dramatic humor that arises from the depth of black women's souls and the breadth of their lives. The eloquent wit and laughter of African American women are presented here in all their written and spoken manifestations: autobiographies, novels, essays, poems, speeches, comic routines, proverbial sayings, cartoons, mimeographed sheets, and folk tales. The chapters proceed thematically, covering the church, love, civil rights, motherly advice, and much more.

Great Collection...a must have........2003-06-10
Very good collection of African American writting. I enjoyed it.
I wish ... had six stars.......2003-05-12
This books is off the charts! Ive been reading for a long time, and this book just encompasses so much for the African American experience. My favorite parts of each chapter are the anecdotes and sayings found at the end of each respectively. Purchase this book and pass it on other everyone you know who needs a laugh!
Hilarious reading for African American Women and AfrAm. Men!.......1999-07-16
This book has been the "Hit" of several recent book parties in The San Francisco East Bay and South Bay Areas. Dr. Dance's book evokes memories of Black humor we rarely are exposed to anymore. These anthologies are the best I have read in years. We can still laugh at ourselves and love the humor in the antidotes.
EVERY BLACK WOMAN CAN TRULY RELATE.......1999-05-30
This is by far the greatest anthology that I have ever laid eyes on. It was very well put together!
Hilarious, and true........1999-01-09
This is an enormously funny, if often slightly risque, anthology. I took it to the office, and my African American fellow workers can't put it down. Ever since I brought it in, periodically there are howls of laughter from around the building. And several of them have told me that they have heard some of these stories and sayings from their own relatives and friends. Highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Collection of Humor.......2007-04-22
This collection of African American humor will take you from the beginning to the end, approximately from the 1800s to present day. Learn how slaves coped with their hardships behind the guise of humor that was directed at their masters without them ever catching onto it. See how their humor changed when African Americans were integrated into American society, how fierce and forthright it became, and come all the way to present day to comedians like Chris Rock and Richard Pryor. This book has many parts and selections from various authors. Some of the early selections are difficult to follow, for the language is traditional slave language, but later selections are much easier. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes culture and likes to laugh.
