Now in its 21st edition, the book is edited by Harry Hammitt of Access Reports and it draws upon the expertise of practicing attorneys who are recognized experts in the field. Appendixes include the text of the relevant acts, and sample pleadings for litigators. A comprehensive guide, essential for anyone interested in open access laws.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent FOIA and Privacy Act reference.......2007-10-09
This is an excellent resource for those submitting FOIA or Privacy Act requests and/or engaging in litigation under either act. It explains the legal framework, offers guidance on submitting requests, handling appeals, and many aspects of litigation. It offers both help with the legal It probably needs to be updated by now and is not exhaustive, but is very thorough and helpful to anyone who has to deal with these confusing areas of the law. It might be a little confusing in places for non-lawyers, but I think would be generally helpful for anyone.
Book Description
This book describes in fascinating detail the variety of experiments sponsored by the U.S. government in which human subjects were exposed to radiation, often without their knowledge or consent. Based on a review of hundreds of thousands of heretofore unavailable or classified documents, this Report tells a gripping story of the intricate relationship between science and the state. Under the thick veil of government secrecy, researchers conducted experiments that ranged from the mundane to such egregious violations as administering radioactive tracers to mentally retarded teenagers, injecting plutonium into hospital patients, and intentionally releasing radiation into the environment. This volume concludes with a discussion of the Committee's key findings and guidelines for changes in institutional review boards, ethics rules and policies, and balancing national security interests with individual rights. Ethicists, public health professionals and those interested in the history of medicine and Cold War history will be intrigued by the findings of this landmark report.
Customer Reviews:
Not a very smooth read..........2004-10-01
I have no idea of the accuracy or inaccuracy of the information in this book, but as a medical student and engineer and interested reader, I can say it is not a smooth read. You must wade through many wordy paragraphs to find small nuggets of poorly organized information. I find it difficult to believe that this was a "report" -- you certainly can't dial up any desired info very easily by checking the table of contents -- you have to really hunt for stuff, and then may find yourself disappointed with the lack of detail that results.
It is certainly a reasonable addition to a personal library for those interested in the topic, but it is by no means a solid reference.
Fascinating Study In Government Whitewashing.......2003-03-24
The government's theory is that these periodic "We're sorry and it will never happen again" blue ribbon committees will assuage the public and make us forget the outrage. Read it and then ask, "Why wasn't anyone sentenced to life in prison for crimes against humanity?"
Excellent scientific treatment of a very difficult subject........1999-04-08
For the first time, an interested reader is able to find a clear treatment of a very sensitive issue in one comprehensive volume. The report presents the facts with a minimum of editorial or political "spin" and represents a critical step forward in our understanding of the Cold War's effects on innocent civilians as well as our atomic veterans, who were used as military guinea pigs. Readable, understandable, and objective, this work is highly recommended for all who want to take a critical look at the ethics of science and our medical establishment, and informed consent. The Nazis were tried for their crimes at Nurenberg; American victims of indiscriminant radiation testing have yet to find justice.
"A Waste Of My Time".......1999-01-31
"The Final Account of The Advisory Committee On Radiation Experiments" was a piece of governmental and military "PR"...It's intent was to entertain the naive and satisfy the the DOE, DOD and other agencies, That set forth to close the books on unethical experimentation that took place during the Cold-War era. The report in some references is purefiction, lies and half-truths desinged to down play the victims,so as to not be accountable for what the govenment and miliary did.

just OK........2007-02-03
unless your professor requires this exact book, i'd get Federal Rules of Evidence + Your State rules of evidence combo book. if you don't, then this FRE book is just fine, like all the others. advisory notes are nice, but you know all the rules and notes are on nexis and westlaw. don't buy this if you can afford not to; otherwise, it's a fine book.

A very useful reference for all health conscious Americans.......2007-01-06
This is a useful tool for those among us who wish to become or remain healthy and understand that what we eat is an important part of this goal.
What is presented in the book can best be called the best available scientific -consensus-. That is, some will disagree with the data and recommendations, but they are usually in the minority (though the minority can still be right).
In my opinion, the informaiton provided allows the consumer to not only understand -what- they should eat, but also -why- they should eat it.
My only gripe with this book (as in other books) is the use of the BMI model which only monitors weight and height. As a person who was in mild starvation in college and still weighed 180 pounds (but had low body fat), to see it defines as 'over-weight' (even if only in the first column) is laughable. Some people who are large-framed (not me) or muscular (me) may end up being unhealthy if they tried to achieve 'healthy' weight as suggested. However, they are trying to use what works for most people and I guess it does. Just don't stress over it. If you want a better measure, ask your doctor for a percentage fat estimate. This is much more useful.
All in all, I'd say every house should have this book.
*** However, if you don't mind an e-copy in PDF format, you can get it (free) from the government web-site just google the title and go to the .gov site.

Book Description
On September 4, 1805, in the upper Bitterroot Valley of what is now western Montana, more than four hundred Salish people were encamped, pasturing horses, preparing for the fall bison hunt, and harvesting chokecherries as they had done for countless generations. As the Lewis and Clark expedition ventured into the territory of a sovereign Native nation, the Salish met the strangers with hospitality and vital provisions, while receiving comparatively little in return.
For the first time, a Native American community offers an in-depth examination of the events and historical significance of their encounter with the Lewis and Clark expedition. The result is a new understanding of the expedition and its place in the wider context of U.S. history. Through oral histories and other materials, Salish elders recount the details of the Salish encounter with Lewis and Clark: their difficulty communicating with the strangers through multiple interpreters and consequent misunderstanding of the expedition’s invasionary purpose, their discussions about whether to welcome or wipe out the newcomers, their puzzlement over the black skin of the slave York, and their decision to extend traditional tribal hospitality and gifts to the guests.
What makes The Salish People and the Lewis and Clark Expedition a startling departure from previous accounts of the Lewis and Clark expedition is how it depicts the arrival of non-Indians—not as the beginning of history, but as another chapter in a long tribal history. Much of this book focuses on the ancient cultural landscape and history that had already shaped the region for millennia before the arrival of Lewis and Clark. The elders begin their vivid portrait of the Salish world by sharing creation stories and their traditional cycle of life. The book then takes readers on a cultural tour of the Native trails that the expedition followed. With tribal elders as our guides, we now learn of the Salish cultural landscape that was invisible to Lewis and Clark.
The Salish People and the Lewis and Clark Expedition also portrays with new clarity the profound upheaval of the Native world in the century before the expedition's arrival, as tribes in the region were introduced to horses, European diseases, and firearms. The arrival of Lewis and Clark marked the beginning of a heightened level of conflict and loss, and the book details the history that followed the expedition: the opening of Salish territory to the fur trade; the arrival of Jesuit missionaries; the establishment of Indian reservations, the non-Indian development of western Montana; and, more recently, the revival and strengthening of tribal sovereignty and culture.
Conveyed by tribal recollections and richly illustrated, The Salish People and the Lewis and Clark Expedition not only sheds new light on the meaning of the expedition, but also illuminates the people who greeted Lewis and Clark, and, despite much of what followed, thrive in their homeland today.

The Salish People.......2006-04-10
Let me start by saying that I am pleased to own this book. An article published at the time of its release noted that it was the first of a series that the University of Nebraska is planning on American Indian tribes. If so, I will own the others as well. However, this is a book of contradictions, a fact that also complicates efforts to understand or review it. It is nicely illustrated in the style of a coffee table volume. Yet, its size and shape match few other books on my coffee table or book shelves. At first glance it looks as if it might end up on the coffee table, but the reader will find that it is much more. It is a serious cultural account of Salish history, with the tribe overseeing the content and drawing upon the elders for subject matter. The authors have inserted many phonetic representations of Salish words that, while fully explained, will interrupt the flow for casual readers. It is a mixed blessing that this book has attached itself to the Lewis and Clark theme. This book is a useful addition to the Lewis and Clark source material. True, exploiting the Lewis and Clark bicentennial will probably increase acceptance and sales. However, it obscures the broader cultural scope of the book and unfortunately will date it. Each Native American tribe (nation) has its own unique cultural history; and the cultures vary greatly. A series of books such as this, each devoted to a single tribe, will be a valuable addition to American cultural literature. It is extremely unfortunate that few non-Indians in America have more than a rudimentary understanding of our fellow citizens that we call Native Americans. This book is at a readable level that may expand American knowledge of Native Americans. On the other hand, like all of the tribes, the Salish culture is tremendously broad and deep; this book is only an introduction.
Book Description
Plumstead Township's convenient location along the Delaware River and early thoroughfares has played a pivotal role in its development through the years. Crossroad communities and hamlets emerged around the mills, taverns, and general stores that served the area's mostly agrarian community. Plumstead Township features these communities, along with photographs of many early families of English, German, and Scottish-Irish descent. The merging of these cultures by the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and the development of new industries and specialized farming, such as dairy operations, are also highlighted.
