Customer Reviews:
a good book in operations and logistics.......2001-06-24
is a good text. easy to understand .
Not a bad global operations textbook.......2000-03-28
I used this book for a global operations class. It contains both text and cases in one book. However, cases in some chapters do not directly relate to the content presenting in those chapters. Moreover, some cases are really difficult to read and understand the context of the case for analysis. However, there are some good HBS cases.
Book Description
The short text includes approximately 30 real cases on manufacturing businesses. The text presents Terry Hill's well-known Order Winner Criteria. This is his strategy for manufacturing.

An outdated text and cases on production strategy.......2000-08-15
I read this book long after its purchasing. Its text stuff is short (just a couple of papers from HBS) and a couple of ideas about the prospective role of production as part of the strategy function of any company and quality control management. All of it is very outdated. In adition, cases are not liable for selfstudy. So, Little profit is to be got from this book from selfstudy.

"A refreshing compendium of clear thinking, a welcome and potent antidote to the reams of books on the supernatural and pseudoscientific."--John Allen Paulos, author of Innumeracy and A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper
This is a lively, commonsense compendium of detailed information on all things supernatural, occult, paranormal, and pseudoscientific. Written by an author with the most popular skeptical site on the Internet, The Skeptic?s Dictionary features close to 400 definitions, arguments, and essays on topics ranging from alchemy to zombies. It covers such categories as alternative medicine; cryptozoology; extraterrestrials and UFOs; frauds and hoaxes; junk science; logic and perception; New Age energy; science and philosophy; and the psychic. For skeptics looking for more substantive information on which to base their skepticism, and for those with a simple desire to learn more, this volume offers a remarkable range of information that puts to the test the best arguments of true believers.

Customer Reviews:
A poor attempt at unfounded conjecture.......2007-06-01
It seems that none of the articles have any substance in undermining the topics they attack. For example, Uri Geller, who has proved his ESP in labs worldwide, is simply poo-pooed without contradicting scientific example. This is hardly skepticism; it is simply automatic gainsay. I'm sorry but this book was a real disappointment. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY BY BUYING IT.
"Long on Opinion, Short on Science.".......2007-05-17
Carroll's book is an encyclopedic rant. He spends half
of his section on out of body experience detailing the
history of one heavy drug user, and spends no time
discussing the phenomenon in history or religion.
He completely discounts situation where individuals
have appeared to other conscious individuals and
shared that information afterward.
When he discusses testimonial evidence, he dismisses
it all as "anecdotal,""inherently subjective, inaccurate,
unreliable and biased. Imagine all the lonely scientists
and discoverers that he would have dismissed out of hand.
If it happened that only 20% of the population could
dream and Mr. Carroll were among the other 80%, he would
discount the "dream-able" population as being either
liars, drug addicts, or delusional mental cases.
I sense that if one were to me this gentleman at a party,
one would recognise him by his inability to ever admit
that he could be wrong.
He's also a teacher in California. I'd love to poll his
students. Is this the kind of teacher who will give a
student who agrees with him an "A," and a student who
disagrees with him, even though he or she has made and
equally powerful argument a "C - ?" What do you think?
Don't waste the money on this book. That you can take to the bank!
ebmer.......2007-03-31
A must for anyone involved in discussing issues with people who believe this sort of pseudoscientific stuff. I didn't know what most of these things were or that they were actually still believed by anyone. Perhaps the U.K is more skeptical. There is room for updating and some
additions by now but it is a good starting place. I love it and have given copies to friends.
A facinating book!.......2007-01-19
I had a great time just browsing through this book and reading the various entries. Several of the entries were familiar to me from other books, but this dictionary added aditional information. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the unsual.
DO WE ALREADY KNOW EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW?.......2007-01-19
It is healthy to be skeptical, but how foolish is it to believe one already have all the answers? Mr. Carroll apparently believes he does. But it was precisely "know it all" people like the author who killed Socrates and ridiculed Galileo's discoveries in order to preserve their erroneous but comfortable world view.
There is much we don't understand and can't measure with our so called "advanced" technology of today. How can we be certain that nothing else exists beyond the limits of our present experience and that a different reality remains obscured by our widely accepted beliefs?
Let's take for example Quantum mechanics which is one of the pillars of modern physics. It explains accurately how the sun shines, how molecules bond together, how iron is magnetized, and even why objects are hard. It is responsible for our computer chips, the electron microscope, lasers, and magnetic resonance imaging. But quantum mechanics also explains how the position or locality of sub-atomic particles is affected by the expectations of the observer. Does this suggest that mind can affect matter? Absolutely. But the author will tell you anyone who believes in mind over matter is delusional.
Many scientists dismiss the possibility of the "supernatural" or of the spirit and even ridicule others who believe in it or consider it possible. However, one recent scientific idea proposes that quantum mechanical waves and fields may be the spiritual portion of the universe and that science may be studying spirit without knowing it.
Consider the work of 1973 Nobel Prize physicist Brian Josephson, best known for his pioneering theoretical work on superconductivity. Josephson points out that there is now strong evidence for the existence of parapsychological phenomena, based on a number of trials designed to investigate telepathy (communication between minds using means beyond those of the known senses) which have produced convincing results.
There is much we need to discover about this universe. What some lambaste today as pseudo-science and delusional beliefs could very well be proven to be true tomorrow. So instead of succumbing to the "herd" mentality, it will serve us better to keep an open mind, and look into the evidence while using our power of discernment. There could be much truth we might be dismissing in some of those "Strange Beliefs, Amusing Deceptions, and Dangerous Delusions" waiting to be understood.

In this stunning gift edition, Celtic experts Caitlin and John Matthews present inspirational primary material, rich in ancient wisdom, lore, and mythology. For readers who are fascinated by Celtic traditions, and spiritual heritage, this unique reference introduces several new translations of powerful Celtic literature, including stories, poems, and visionary writing-many dating from the 7th century.

Customer Reviews:
Mixed Thoughts.......2006-04-09
John and Caitlin continue to present Celtic material out of context, and often in contradiction from one book to another of theirs. I've met John, and had lunch with him back in April of 1993 in Seattle. At that time, he acknowledged that his training is as a librarian, that he neither read or spoke any Celtic language; both he and Caitlin are occultists. When it was mentioned that he called stories "lost" in some of his books that he quoted in others, he had no explanation. He blamed previously published sources for glaring errors of translation, and seemed to see no reason to have anyone-- including Caitlin, who does have translation skills-- check his material before publication. He was accompanied by David Spangler, and many of his views seem more reflective of Spanger's New Age thought than Celtic scholarship. There is a lot of useful material in this book (all of which is avaialble elsewhere), but also a fair bit out of context and without proper attribution, including material from Erynn Darkstar and Taine Bwca's Cauldron of Poesy; they gave him a copy over lunch. Considering the Celtic obsession with intellectual property (copyright law originated in Ireland!), it would have been courtesy at the very least for the source to be cited.
The Encyclopaedia of Celtic Wisdom.......2005-04-14
At 456 pages this book is the most thorough work on this subject that I have seen to date. Chapters include: The Memory of the Earth; The Memory of Trees; The Memory of Animals; Shape shifting; Druids and Vision Poets; Dreams and Visions; In the House of the Sidhe etc. The bibliography is a perfect source for further reading. An excellent resource for those wanting to understand their Celtic heritage and a must for the serious student of shamanism or the occult. A great addition to the occult library.
As of 1/6/01, One of the Top Three Books on Celtic Tradition.......2002-01-06
The Encyclopaedia of Celtic Wisdom is, hands down, required reading for anyone interested in the primal Celtic traditions, especially of the Irish and Scottish traditions. Where John Matthews' Taliesin and the Shamanic Mysteries of Britian addresses largely a Cymric (Welsh) and British leaning, The Encyclopaedia of Celtic Wisdom is, largely, rooted in the Irish, with some exploration of folk Scots beliefs and expressions of the shamanic (as in the case of the late and well-loved Scottish seer, Eliadh Watt). As of January 2002 I consider this book to be one of the top three books on Celtic tradition, especially the visionary tradition of primal Celtic spirituality and the field of contemporary Celtic spirituality. It is a priceless addition to one's library, along with Tom Cowan's Fire in the Head: Shamanism and the Celtic Spirit, Mara Freeman's Kindling the Celtic Spirit. For a more classical exploration of these same themes I recommend The Silver Bough, by F. Marian McNeill.
This is a book beyond most others in the field........1998-10-27
If you never again by any books on this subject you must have this book. Reliable source document translations that are accessible to the average reader are thin on the ground and this is one of the very best. BUY THIS BOOK! I refer to it repeatedly and it never lets me down. An excellent book and an excellent value.
A useful reference resource.......1998-02-23
"A Reader's" anonymous, academically misinformed and spiritually narrow-minded comments address this book specifically in no way; take them with a shaker of salt and that fact in mind.
This book is a good reference and browsing resource for practicing Celtic shamans, though those with a reader's interest and those newer to the practice may find more practical guidance elsewhere (including, especially, Matthews' "The Celtic Shaman: A Handbook"). Overall, very useful, but perhaps later on the path.

Canada's rich, diverse literary heritage has long attracted widespread recognition, and in recent years Canadian writers have won nearly every major international literary award. The breadth and sophistication of Canada's literature demands precisely the kind of critical reflection that W.H. New's comprehensive Encyclopedia of Literature in Canada now offers to readers.
This up-to-date reference book brings together 300 leading Canadianists to look at literature in Canada from a variety of perspectives. In over 2000 entries, acknowledging Canada's cultural plurality, the Encyclopedia discusses literature in English and French, and also in such other languages as Yiddish, Spanish, Haida and Cree; authors and their work; related literary and social issues; professional institutions that play a role in the lives of Canadian writers; and the major historical and cultural events that have shaped Canada.
The unique richness of this work is also reflected in the breadth of other entries. Among them are commentaries on humour and satire, genre (including radio drama and the long poem), social history, film, television and popular culture, literary awards, language, critical theory, the oral literatures of the First Nations, petroglyphs, the publishing industry, journalism, gender, race, religion, region, myth, and class.
Extensive cross-referencing, a cultural chronology, supplementary index, and suggestions for further reading make this encyclopedia the most complete and accessible reference guide to Canadian literature in print. Encyclopedia of Literature in Canada will be an essential resource for scholars, writers, and readers for years to come.

Book Description
Transcendentalism, a movement of theological innovation and literary experimentation arising within New England Unitarianism in the 1830s and 1840s, significantly influenced American religion, literature, education, and political culture. Still, because the "movement" was diverse and often unfocused, definitions and boundaries have been notoriously difficult to establish. As a manifestation of the spirit of the age, Transcendentalism meant confidence in human potential and hope in a future that would realize our best aspirations. This reference approaches the subject from a history-of-ideas perspective, embracing the inconsistencies and oddities as well as the powerful achievements of the Transcendentalists. With 145 entries by 70 expert contributors, this volume is the first comprehensive guide to the major philosophical concepts, themes, genres, periodicals, events, organizations and movements, and places associated with Transcendentalism in the United States. Significant classical, European, Asian, and native sources and influences are included, as are later manifestations and transformations. Aspects of the movement covered include religion, philosophy, literature, the arts, education, politics, science, and reform. The book features separate entry bibliographies, an extensive chronology, and a detailed index.
