Despite unnerving swings in individual stock valuations--or perhaps because of them--many knowledgeable observers still believe the 21st century will ultimately earn its stripes as the Age of Biotech. Cynthia Robbins-Roth, named by Forbes magazine as one of the industry's top insiders, certainly is among them. And in From Alchemy to IPO, she persuasively argues investors better take heed because they ain't seen nothin' yet. "Most of us think of biotech as medicine or genetically engineered crops," writes Robbins-Roth. But in the very near future, she continues, it also "may make it possible for humans to reach the stars and to change the environment on other planets." Think that's far-fetched? She says developments like this are already in early stages and, in a deliberately proselytizing manner, traces their roots to the current business nitty-gritty, finally focusing on the long-term moneymaking potential. "The biotech world will never be an easy place for investors," she cautions, but with hundreds of ongoing projects "poised to power into the marketplace," there will be plenty of "opportunities for investors and employees alike." Recommended for readers seeking an informed tutorial on this field of the future. --Howard Rothman

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good introductory text and overview of the industry.......2005-03-06

I read From Alchemy to IPO for an MBA course on entrepreneurialism in the pharmaceutical industry. Given my background (undergraduate business, financial analyst role, limited in-depth scientific knowledge), I found this book to be a very useful and balanced guide to both the business and technical aspects of biotechnology.

Robbins-Roth includes enough information on initial public offerings (IPOs) and merger activity among biotech firms to warm the hearts of the most resolute business student, but the drug discovery and development process is also covered in sufficient detail to give the lay reader an understanding for the operational challenges faced by firms in this sector.

Add to this the competent yet necessarily superficial descriptions of more esoteric terms such as monoclonal antibodies and combinatorial chemistry, and you have a solid text that covers the industry and its ongoing challenges very well.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant Overview.......2004-05-31

This is a great overview of the world of biotech. The author explains the science with clarity and enthusiasm and the introduction this book provides to the corporate side of biotech is also very interesting and well written.

2 out of 5 stars bad writing.......2004-01-15

I read the first 20 pages of this book and quit. It was too painful to keep going. The author's wording in convoluted, tangential, and just plain annoying. She throws out dozens of names from the industry, so many you can't keep them straight. There is poor flow to the writing, so you cannot understand why she is telling you things from one line to the next. The topics of each paragraph jump from one subject to another with abrupt, confusing transitions. I returned the book!

5 out of 5 stars Clear and non hyped intro into biotech.......2002-05-28

I'll be starting a biomedical engineering Ph.D. program in the fall and have read recently a few books on the biotech subject. This one gave the clearest picture of the biotech industries, the companies in them, how to manage and finance them, as well as how to recognize solid biotech companies for investing purposes. A quick and entertaining read for anyone interested in the business behind biotechnology.

2 out of 5 stars WAY OVERRATED BOOK ON BIOTECH.......2001-08-25

to quote another user: "The author's expertise in science, finance, management strategy, and journalism..." the author can write decently and she may know about biotech (hard to judge for me not being a scientist)...BUT her knowledge about management strategy and finance is limited at best...that wouldn't be so bad if she were to stick to write about science...however, she thinks she knows about finance and strategy...who wants to read about strategy should stick with hamel, pralahad, porter etc., who wants to read about finance (valuation) should stick with copeland et al, and who wants to read about ipos should try articles by jay ritter.

    Book Description

As computer-assisted modeling and analysis of physical processes have continued to grow and diversify, sensitivity and uncertainty analyses have become indispensable investigative scientific tools. Most of the techniques used for these analyses are well documented. However, a particularly useful method based on adjoint operators and applicable to a much wider variety of problems than methods traditionally used in control theory has lacked a full, systematic treatment. Sensitivity and Uncertainty Analysis. Volume I: Theory, fills that gap, focusing on the mathematical underpinnings of the Forward Sensitivity Analysis Procedure (FSAP), the Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Procedure (ASAP), and the use of deterministically obtained sensitivities for uncertainty analysis. After a review of the requisite background material, the author explores the concepts of local sensitivity analysis for both linear and nonlinear systems. This leads to the presentation of a global sensitivity analysis procedure for determining all of the system's critical points, and then analyzing these points locally by the ASAP. Along the way, the book presents several significant paradigms that illustrate the unique advantages of using the ASAP for large-scale systems characterized by many variables and parameters. The treatment is rigorous but accessible and includes a discussion of the relative advantages and disadvantages of the ASAP and FSAP methods. The broad applicability of ASAP and FSAP make them valuable additions to your analytical toolbox and make this book a welcome complement to the available literature.

        Book Description

There are many methods for performing sensitivity and uncertainty analysis. Two of the modern--and most useful--deterministic methods, the Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Procedure (ASAP) and the Global Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis (GASAP), received detailed theoretical treatment in Volume I of this book. This volume extends the underlying theory of these methods into practice with a focus on their application to large-scale systems. Sensitivity and Uncertainty Analysis Volume II: Applications to Large-Scale Systems begins with a review of the most prominent screening design, statistical, and deterministic methods. The authors then explore applications of the ASAP to transient one-dimensional two-phase flow problems, in particular its implementation into a large-scale code that simulates the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of light water nuclear reactors. They go on to build the theoretical foundation for the modular implementation of the ASAP for complex simulations systems and present the general sensitivity theory for the response functional of a physical system defined at critical points. The remaining chapters are devoted to applications of the ASAP to sensitivity analyses of large-scale models used for numerical weather prediction and climatic research and simulation. The examples presented clearly demonstrate the advantages of using the ASAP for large-scale systems characterized by many variables and parameters, particularly its exceptional computational efficiency. Rigorous but accessible, this book will build a thorough familiarity with ASAP and its advantages and make ASAP a valuable addition to your analytical toolbox.

          Book Description

High levels of uncertainty are a trademark of geological investigations, such as the search for oil, diamonds, and uranium. So business ventures related to geology, such as mineral exploration and mining, are naturally associated with higher risks than more traditional entrepreneurial ventures in industry and economy. There are also a number of dangerous natural hazards, e.g. earthquakes, volcanic activities, and inundations, that are the direct result of geological processes. It is of paramount interest to study them all, to describe them, to understand their origin and - if possible - to predict them. While uncertainties, geological risks and natural hazards are often mentioned in geological textbooks, conferences papers, and articles, no comprehensive and systematic evaluation has so far been attempted. This book, written at an appropriately sophisticated level to deal with complexity of these problems, presents a detailed evaluation of the entire problem, discussing it from both, the geological and the mathematical aspects.

            Book Description

Around the world, liberalization and privatization in the electricity industry have lead to increased competition among utilities. At the same time, utilities are now exposed more than ever to risk and uncertainties, which they cannot pass on to their customers through price increases as in a regulated environment. Especially electricity-generating companies have to face volatile wholesale prices, fuel price uncertainty, limited long-term hedging possibilities and huge, to a large extent, sunk investments.

In this context, Uncertainty in the Electric Power Industry: Methods and Models for Decision Support aims at an integrative view on the decision problems that power companies have to tackle. It systematically examines the uncertainties power companies are facing and develops models to describe them - including an innovative approach combining fundamental and finance models for price modeling. The optimization of generation and trading portfolios under uncertainty is discussed with particular focus on CHP and is linked to risk management. Here the concept of integral earnings at risk is developed to provide a theoretically sound combination of value at risk and profit at risk approaches, adapted to real market structures and market liquidity. Also methods for supporting long-term investment decisions are presented: technology assessment based on experience curves and operation simulation for fuel cells and a real options approach with endogenous electricity prices.

                Description:
This paper develops a decision-making methodology for computational model validation, considering the risk of using the current model, data support for the current model, and cost of acquiring new information to improve the model. A Bayesian decision theory-based method is developed for this purpose, using a likelihood ratio as the validation metric for model assessment. An expected risk or cost function is defined as a function of the decision costs, and the likelihood and prior of each hypothesis. The risk is minimized through correctly assigning experimental data to two decision regions based on the comparison of the likelihood ratio with a decision threshold. A Bayesian validation metric is derived based on the risk minimization criterion. Two types of validation tests are considered: pass/fail tests and system response value measurement tests. The methodology is illustrated for the validation of reliability prediction models in a tension bar and an engine blade subjected to high cycle fatigue. The proposed method can effectively integrate optimal experimental design into model validation to simultaneously reduce the cost and improve the accuracy of reliability model assessment.

                Book Description

Engineering Uncertainty and Risk Analysis offers an integrated coverage of the subjects of probability, statistics, Monte Carlo simulation, descriptive and inferential statistics, design of experiments, systems reliability, fitting random data to models, analysis of variance(ANOVA), stochastic processes, and stochastic differential equations. While these subjects are normally covered in different treatises or college courses, the author for the first time presents an introduction to the broad field of engineering uncertainty analysis in one comprehensive, friendly, coverage. The focus is on Engineering applications, rather than theoretical or mathematical considerations. Each concept is illustrated with several examples (151 solved examples) of relevance in engineering applications (no cards, colored balls, or dice). Engineering Uncertainty and Risk Analysis illustrates practical applications with the use of modern computer algebra software, such as Maple (50 short computer programs). However, no prior knowledge of Maple is needed. The author gradually introduces the reader to the use of Maple in stochastic and statistical analysis and modeling, starting from the very basic operations through advanced operations.

Engineering Uncertainty and Risk Analysis presents random differential equations as a natural extension to their deterministic counterpart, rather than a special theoretical subject for statisticians or advanced graduate work. The author strives to emulate the courses of differential equations in most college textbooks. This way the reader may associate random differential equations naturally with the deterministic course s/he had. Many examples illustrate the concepts. In addition, new powerful analytical methods to solve non-linear equations are presented for the first time at this level.

Excellent! Even if you fear probability and statistics, you can learn so much from this book. Dr. Serrano provides a crawl, walk, run approach to probability, statistics, and uncertainty. Any academic discipline could gain from this book, but the examples used tend toward engineering and its applications. Not only will the reader gain a firm foundation on the subject matter, the latter chapters take you to the upper level of stats, probability, and modeling of the unknown. As a bonus, Dr. Serrano inserts helpful hints and example programs to use in the very powerful C based Maple mathmatics software.
