From the supplier: Most people pay little attention to health plan report cards despite the wealth of information they provide on medical coverage. Unfortunately, most employers also ignore these report cards, often selecting plans on the basis of cost rather than service quality. 'Health Matters,' which is prepared by the Colorado Business Group on Health (CBGH), is believed to be the most comprehensive health care report card on the state's health plan industry. The CBGH is a nonprofit coalition backed by a coalition of 11 major Colorado employers including Norwest Bank, Coors Brewing and Lockheed Martin.

Book Description
Measures of Active Labor Market Policy - such as training, wage subsidies, public employment measures, and job search assistance - are widely used in European countries to combat unemployment. Little, however, is known about what each country can learn from experiences in other countries. This study provides novel insight on this important policy issue by discussing the role of the European Commission's Employment Strategy, reviewing the experiences made in European states, and giving the first ever quantitative assessment of the existing cross-country evidence, answering the question "what labor market program works for what target group under what (economic and institutional) circumstances?". Using an innovative meta-analytical approach, the authors find that rather than contextual factors such as labor market institutions or the business cycle, it is almost exclusively the program type that matters for program effectiveness: While direct employment programs in the public sector appear detrimental, wage subsidies and "Services and Sanctions" can be effective in increasing participants' employment probability.

Book Description
* Provides a "how-to" approach to strategic environmental assessment (SEA)--ideal for all practitioners
* Applicable to all levels of SEA, from policy to program, from international to local
* The only book covering the new EC Directive 2001/42/EC--widely known as the "SEA Directive."
"Strategic Environmental Assessment in Action" is a practical guide on how to carry out strategic environmental assessment (SEA). The book presents a coherent "how-to-do-it" approach for the practitioner, and it is the first publication to take account of the requirements of the recent EC Directive 2001/42/EC--widely known as the "SEA Directive."
The book introduces SEA and the SEA Directive, and considers different stages of SEA including setting the context, describing the baseline, identifying alternatives, predicting and evaluating impacts, and using the SEA information in decisionmaking. Through real-life case studies, each chapter presents a range of techniques and discusses how the final product should look. A final chapter discusses resources and capacity building. The approach and techniques are useful for anyone carrying out an SEA, but particularly for practitioners responsible for implementing the SEA Directive.

Customer Reviews:
the perfect book if you want to sleep.......2001-11-28
I've never read such a boring book! It takes ages before you start understanding what this guy is actually saying. After reading a few pages you'll be fast asleep... At least I did.
Difficult but..........2000-01-18
This book is seasoned economists only... It IS badly written, the theory is unnecessarily complicated, but then again it was certainly not intended to be an elegant political essay. If you want to know about the scientific depths of economic integration between nations, this is the right reading for you. But be prepared to take a lot of aspirin.
Boring, uninteresting book.......1999-06-17
This is a total contrast to american books. It is without colors, pictures. You can hardly find a graph in it. Besides this, that the book is not interesting to look at and it is also written in a totaly ununderstandable way. It wants to be sophisticated, but it is a crap! I would not recomend this book to anyone who does not really need it.

Book Description
The new edition of this successful text analyses the current economic issues facing a rapidly changing Europe. The authors combine policy, history and data to present a global perspective of the EU, written with a range of students taking an introductory module in European Economics in mind. With new material on the economic relationship between the EU and the US, Enlargement and the Lisbon process the authors consider the changing landscape and Europe's development as a major global player. The authors use history, theory and analysis including comparative data to evaluate Economic policies ranging from the Common Agricultural Policy and Competition Policy to Social Policy and Monetary Policy and to assess issues such as unemployment and foreign aid. The contributors are drawn from a range of Universities such as Vienna, Manchester, Brussels, LSE and Purdue, as well as institutions such as the IMF and the European Central Bank.
Customer Reviews:
The classic in the field.......2003-09-26
This is one of the classic text in the area. It covers most of the main policy areas in a series of chapters written by separate authors. The multi-author thing is a bit disturbing given very different levels. Another drawback is that it contains relatively little economics and not all of that is up-to-date -- most of the book presents policy and institutional details. The latest version is quite up-to-date but nothing on the Constitutional Treaty and little on the 2004 enlargement.

Book Description
The book is concerned with the main issues that arise for general commodity taxation in the internal market: the choice of a new international tax principle and the question of tax rate harmonization. The book provides a thorough discussion of these issues and evaluates the choices made by the European Community from a welfare-theoretic perspective by comparing them to feasible alternatives. The discussion integrates a large number of recent theoretical and policy-oriented contributions which have so far not been collected and summarized in a single volume. Special features of the book are that (a) the analysis combines elements of international trade theory and public finance, two economic disciplines which are rarely integrated; (b) a dual general equilibrium framework is used throughout the analysis, (c) a second-best setting is consistently employed, incorporating relevant policy constraints and integrating conflicting arguments in a single analytical framework, (d) part of the theoretical analysis is supplemented by a computable general equilibrium approach. The book shows that well-known international trademodels can be extended to model alternative principles for taxing international trade but also international differences in preferences for public goods and different views of government behavior - issues which are directly relevant for the discussion of tax rateharmonization but are rarely treated in an analytical way.

Book Description
The expanding membership of the EU means significant changes for accession countries' international trade relations, affecting imports, exports, tax revenues, government expenditures and domestic regulatory regimes. There are also significant ramifications for the EU budget. This book is a valuable comprehensive tool kit for analyzing the economic effect of EU accession, using examples from the most complex sector for both candidate countries and the EU itself - agriculture.
The authors provide a complete set of market configurations with which to analyze harmonization with the Common Agriculture Policy in both the long and short run. It also provides insights into the questions of regulatory harmonization in areas of food safety, animal and plant health, the environment, animal welfare, technical standards and the protection of intellectual property. Background is provided on the EU and its policies, economic developments in transition economies and the accession process. The book also provides a unique insight into how negotiating positions can be developed.
A wide audience will find this book of great value and interest including policymakers and analysts in governments and related think tanks, businesses and consultancy firms trading in the EU. Scholars and researchers of European studies, international trade and agriculture will also find the book invaluable.

Book Description
This book explores the new economics of monetary union. It carefully discusses the effects of shocks and policies on output and prices. Shocks and policies are country-specific or common. They occur on the demand or supply side. Countries can differ in behavioural functions. Wages can be fixed, flexible, or slow. In addition, fixed wages and flexible wages can coexist. Take for instance fixed wages in Germany and flexible wages in France. Or take fixed wages in Europe and flexible wages in America. A special feature of this book is the numerical estimation of shock and policy multipliers. Further topics are inflation and disinflation. Take for instance inflation in Germany and price stability in France. Then what policy is needed for disinflation in the union? And what will be the dynamic effects on Germany and France?
