1 out of 5 stars can't judge a book by its cover? try its table of contents.......2006-03-09

Please ignore the truly absurd and misleading comments about this "extensively revised second edition of Terry Wireman's landmark introduction to CMMS". This appalling book reminds me to always look at the table of contents and then also index to gain an impression of the quality of analysis and thinking behind it. If Risk Management Systems by Martin Gorrod scores 99/100 as a survey of software in a one domain then Terry's book scores a 1/100 in another. bad, bad, bad. (sorry terry)

4 out of 5 stars Simple yet complete guide to CMMS.......2001-12-17

In Computerized Maintenance Management Systems , Terry Wireman provides the maintenance manager with a good introduction to all aspects of CMMS implementation and use. His principal accomplishment is adequately covering the subject in 162 pages and resisting the temptation litter his work with unnecessary topics and details.

Wireman's straight-to-the-point style is emphasized by his inclusion of useful tools, such as a maintenance organization maturity grid, a detailed maintenance audit checklist, a requirements template for CMMS, detailed cost justification worksheets, and, of course, a top-ten list of problems to avoid.

Computerized Maintenance Management Systems is a worthwhile read for anybody involved in maintenance, and especially so for those in the incipient stages of installing their own CMMS.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent source for CMMS and maintenance mgt information........1998-05-09

The Preface of the book says: "This book is designed to assist anyone who is investigating the possiblity of using a computer in the maintenance function. It provides the information necessary to successfully evaluate, select, and implement a CMMS." That's a very accurate statement. Along with providing that information, the author presents a concise discussion of the goals and objectives of all maintenance organizations. Finally, The Maintenance Organizational Maturity Grid appears to be a great tool for helping a maintenance organization decide where they are and where they might want to go. It's a book that ought to be on every maintenance managers book shelf. After she's read it, of course. The book is 175 pages long, and a very easy read.

          Book Description

Fundamental Issues in Strategy is the product of a conference jointly sponsored by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Strategic Management Society in November 1990. This conference brought together important and influential thinkers in the field of strategy, as well as scholars from the fields of economics, organizational sociology, and political science, to address the following fundamental questions: How do firms behave? Why do firms differ? What are the functions of the headquarters unit in a multibusiness firm? What determines the international success or failure of firms? The book includes contributions from Alfred Chandler, Michael Porter, Oliver Williamson, and C.K. Prahalad. It represents a coherent statement of the status and future of the field of strategic management, re-examining the theoretical roots of strategic issues in order to set a new research agenda and advance the state of the field. Also available in hardcover; ISBN 0875843433, $45.00.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Researchers' Reference.......2003-08-28

The thesis of the book is that research in strategy needs to be directed at fundamental questions, like "Why are firms different (despite attempts to imitate one another)?" The writers don't even bother to discuss the popular sillyness of advising firms to be "quick" or "invest in IT" and so on. Rather, there is a real attempt to describe what is known and not known about fundamental issues, like imitability.

The book's strength is the quality of the 22 authors involved. It is the strongest showing of intellectual talent on this subject ever assembled. The weakness is that it was written just before the rise of "competence-based" views of strategy, so that it offers little perspective on that literature.

Twelve years after the papers in this book were written, it remains an essential reference to research in strategy. MBAs and business people looking for the newest guru ideas should stay away---there are plenty of guru books out there to satisfy their needs for cool hip ideas ("seek chaos!").

4 out of 5 stars Fundamental Issues in Strategy: A Research Agenda.......2002-04-02

This book is not recomended for undergraduate, you must thinking hardly to understand the "soul" of this book. Read it carefully, once you read it, you will understand why the titled is
"Research Agenda", but anyway, this is usefull book for a reference in research or comprehensive analysis in area of strategy.

          5 out of 5 stars Things we don't understand.......2001-05-25

This book resulted from a conference held in Napa valley a few years before the book's publication. The editors and contributors examine critical issues in strategic management. Ten years later, these issues remain unresolved. This is because these issues are complex and enduring. Anyone interested in understanding enduring competitive advantage will benefit greatly by reading this book. One of its major contributions is that it delineates the boundaries of current understanding. To those looking for immediate help to their organizational problems this volume will offer few solutions. For those wanting to understand how firms behave, adapt, and organize for sustainable advantage this book will be a great start.

1 out of 5 stars Very Poor Reader.......1999-07-09

This book isn't worth the paper it's written on. It's a lengthy reader with tons of references and little creative thinking or new inspiring ideas. The content is rather basic and doesn't go beyond summarizing history and restating what's written in other books. What we need is not someone who can repeat what was written by others in another 600 pages - we need new thoughts and ideas. Don't make the same mistake I made in wasting money and time on this book!

              Book Description

Working on quality initiatives that are not tied into the organization's strategic plan will lead to wasted effort and a lack of focus. On the other hand, strategic planning that is not grounded in quality principles could become a mere exercise that lacks the continuous review, measurement, and improvement of a quality focus.

In Strategic Planning in Healthcare: Building a Quality-Based Plan Step by Step, you will learn how to create and implement a strategic plan in healthcare organizations that fully integrates quality principles such as: customer focus, empowerment, systems approach, measurement, and continuous improvement.

The author presents a four-phase model for quality-based strategic planning that incorporates a systems perspective. This model avoids redundant parallel organizational activities.

Special Feature: This book contains three in-depth case studies - Optima Health, Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word Health Care System, and Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

The Enterprise Resource Planning Decade: Lessons Learned and Issues for the Future presents a collection of chapters written by various experts that share a interest in the ERP movement. This collection will generate much interest and contribute to the development of Enterprise-wide systems that provide true support to organizations and the development of methodologies that are less disruptive of organizational day-to-day business than is the case today. When ERP projects stop being the make or break ventures they can be and we stop getting these negative reports about failed implementation, the target will have been met and the ERP market will be less of a jungle than it is today.

Every year traditional businesses set aside time for Strategic Planning. If a company has a CEO, her principal job is to foster strategic thinking. If the business community understands the importance of Strategic Planning, why don't lawyers.

Lawyers were never taught to operate businesses and don't take the time to take management coursed to learn how to do this. Using this book as a resouce will help lawyers to understand and implement these concepts.

The book has a great table of contents and is written in a style that can be easily read and understood - no jargon. While it would be best to read the entire book, you can read it on a section by section basis depending on what your particular needs are at any one moment.

Without a Strategic Plan, its unlikely that you will know what tactics you want to use and you won't be very accurate in deciding what your goals will be. This book will eliminate these problems for you.

                  Book Description

The First and Second Industrial Revolutions were about energy: steam power revolutionized 19th-century Great Britain and electric power revolutionized 20th-century America. Yet political economy, the science of wealth born of the First Industrial Revolution, is devoid of energy, focusing instead on machinery or capital. According to basic mechanics, tools per se are not productive, as they are not source of energy. This book uses basic mechanics and thermodynamics to reexamine the rise of political economy as the science of wealth in the 19th and 20th centuries. The study shows that the failure of generations of political economists to formally incorporate energy into their models of production and distribution has led to the unfortunate state in which economics currently finds itself. With the inclusion of energy, important insights result. For instance, the Solow Residual in both 19th-century Great Britain and 20th-century America disappears. Unlike previous critiques of political economy, this analysis is constructive in nature, using past shortcomings and oversights as a springboard to a more consistent model of economic activity, especially production. The book is the first of its kind to use basic physics and thermodynamics as a guide to the First and Second Industrial Revolutions, and more importantly, to show how political economists from Smith to Fisher have attempted to understand these two energy-based Industrial Revolutions.
