This is a great gift to any young and ambitious person you know and would like to further encourage! A very motivational, fast and enjoyable book!

2 out of 5 stars Wisdom for a Young Ceo: Incredible Letters and Inspiring Advice from Today's Business Leaders.......2007-01-04

The letters from the CEO's are great but I could live without Mr. Barry's copy - however doing so would mean cutting the book by two-thirds.

1 out of 5 stars this is the tiny 3" x 3.5" version of the book.......2006-03-24

I was looking for the "big" book, and when it arrived, I was quite surprised to find a little 3" x 3.5" by .5" book.

1 star to make sure people know what they are getting.

4 out of 5 stars Advice for a Young CEO.......2006-02-20

Young Douglas Barry, has compiled an interesting series of responses from Corporate CEO's, Presidents and top executives on the things that really should matter to a broad range of readers. One thing I liked about the book is how easily it read. This format comes in handy for young teenagers and corporate types too busy to spend a whole bunch of time getting the plot.

The diversity of ideas makes it another good read for people too easily put off by one persons philosophy. Because in this book you get several dozen different philosophies. But very few cross cultural executives which would have opened the door just a little more on the philosophical side from a broader global perspective.

This book also has *Skip Ability...*the ability to skip from the front to the back without having to feel like you're being forced to move in sequenced order.

I liked a lot of things about this book but I don't think the book gives enough detail for it to have adorned the title "Wisdom for a Young CEO". At least for me I'm looking for more detail on specific challenges a young CEO may have to face in their first years of running a major corporation. You know the kind of adjustments that could cause you to make a company succeed or fail. Inspite of that I still gave the book five stars because for the age range of the author this book is a good resource whether you're a teenager, young adult or late blooming business mind looking for direction and inspiration.

I think it is an invaluable resource for so many types of people on a few different levels. I also believe you'll enjoy it if this review opened your eyes on how the book may work for you. Always remember that you get out of life what you give to life on the front end. Have a great day!

5 out of 5 stars Wowee!!!!!!.......2006-02-01

I was amazed w/ this book. My dad was reading it for an interview and I also read some letters. This book can teach you many things ( not only if you want to be a CEO). I was amazed on what people wrote. They are lifelong things you should remember. All in all this is a great book. If you are going to have an interview(or just want a good book),i highly recomend this book!!!

    Book Description

We live in a world, according to N. Katherine Hayles, where new languages are constantly emerging, proliferating, and fading into obsolescence. These are languages of our own making: the programming languages written in code for the intelligent machines we call computers. Hayles's latest exploration provides an exciting new way of understanding the relations between code and language and considers how their interactions have affected creative, technological, and artistic practices.

My Mother Was a Computer explores how the impact of code on everyday life has become comparable to that of speech and writing: las anguage and code have grown more entangled, the lines that once separated humans from machines, analog from digital, and old technologies from new ones have become blurred. My Mother Was a Computer gives us the tools necessary to make sense of these complex relationships. Hayles argues that we live in an age of intermediation that challenges our ideas about language, subjectivity, literary objects, and textuality. This process of intermediation takes place where digital media interact with cultural practices associated with older media, and here Hayles sharply portrays such interactions: how code differs from speech; how electronic text differs from print; the effects of digital media on the idea of the self; the effects of digitality on printed books; our conceptions of computers as living beings; the possibility that human consciousness itself might be computational; and the subjective cosmology wherein humans see the universe through the lens of their own digital age.

We are the children of computers in more than one sense, and no critic has done more than N. Katherine Hayles to explain how these technologies define us and our culture. Heady and provocative, My Mother Was a Computer will be judged as her best work yet.

This book is a comprehensive look at various issues which are at the forefront of the information revolution: computers and privacy, censorship on the net, protection of intellectual property, encryption policy, computer crime, and the risks associated with unexpected computer failures. Sara Baase does a good job of balancing these controversies with various points of view, and offering perspective and solutions. Although this book is meant for academic use, it's extremely accessible.

    Book Description

This book explores social, legal, philosophical, ethical, political, constitutional and economic implications of computing from a computer scientist's point of view. It covers the issues individuals face as members of a technological society and offers guidance for professionals in computer-related fields. 2 out of 5 stars This book leaves a lot to be desired........2006-03-04

This book is an incredible waste of time to read. If you must, I recommend briefly scanning the topic sentence of each paragraph. The book is tedious because Baase attempts to wring every idea possible from the subject material, whether it is significant or not. She does this because:

    1. The book would only be 50 pages if all of the fluffy hand-holding were removed.

    2. None of the ideas presented in the book are original or exciting, and must be trumped up with a lot of "high level" discussion. You know it well; it's the kind that only career academics would enjoy.

    3. She has to dilute the terrible writing and editing that went into the book. I particularly enjoy this gem:

"A subsequent version of the product, known as Windows NT, a high-end system that incorporated networking technology and allowed users to link PCs together."

The only thing I like more than paying for common knowledge is paying for sentences that lack a predicate.

2 stars for an uninspired money-grab.

    5 out of 5 stars satisfied.......2005-10-13

5 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook, unexpectedly thought-provoking.......2005-09-08

This was used as my text book for a graduate level ethics course. I read it cover to cover and found to be well-organized, informative and enlightening. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars very exciting and thought provoking.......2004-01-27

it's a great book to begin in-class discussions

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and Accessible.......2002-08-15

Because the author's ethics class at SDSU uses this text as a primary source, I may be a bit biased in my judgment of this book. For the class, it was an excellent reference, bringing up interesting points for discussion and showcasing these points with anecdotes -- some humorous, some downright frightening. Baase's writing style is accessible to a wide audience, and even the parts that, by virtue of being part of a textbook, are dry and only mildly interesting are digestible.

If you're looking for a book that will give you a general overview of problems associated with computing, this book will hit the spot. Without any noticable bias, it provides information from different perspectives, and even gives fair treatment to Luddites.

    A good, solid choice.

      Book Description

Adopting an informational perspective towards knowledge work, this book investigates how enterprise portals can promote knowledge creation, distribution, and use. Moving beyond the design and delivery of portals as mere information retrieval tools, an enterprise portal is viewed as a shared information work space that can facilitate communication and collaboration among organizational workers, as well as support the browsing, searching, and retrieval of information content. Adopting an information vantage point, the book uniquely explores the human issues surrounding enterprise portal adoption and use, as well as the utilization of intelligent agents to ameliorate the use of portals for knowledge-based tasks. The result is a novel, rich and comprehensive discussion on the factors affecting the design and utilization of enterprise portals for knowledge work, suitable for both graduate-level students and organizational workers alike.

        Book Description

Telecommuting by any name: telework, mobile work, home offices, virtual employees, or telematics, is one of the most intriguing and least understood results of advances in portable computing. Employees and communities are eager to embrace it, and the media reports about it as a perk with the power to attract new talent, as well as to retain good employees. The question is how to start a program and what should an organization worry about? The difficulty for many managers is getting good advice on starting and managing programs effectively. Telecommuting and Virtual Offices: Issues and Opportunities presents usable research and advice on many of these issues. This book is for academics or practitioners seeking a better understanding of designing and managing telework programs.

            Book Description

This is the book that first challenged our basic assumptions about the nature of the physical universe by suggesting that we might all be living in a virtual reality - and that information might prove more fundamental than either matter or energy. At the time of publication (1988) this was still a revolutionary idea, but it is now growing familiar thanks to the success of films such as "Open Your Eyes" and "The Matrix". The ideas in this book have even been given an airing on the pages of New Scientist but, fourteen years on, this remains the most thorough and complete discussion of the virtual model of the universe. While others are beginning to explore the concept, the author had been working with it ever since the 1960s when he was studying mathematics at Cambridge university under Conway, himself a pioneer of artificial life studies. What struck the author was the division in society between those who fully accepted a materialistic view of existence and all phenomena, and those who felt there was 'something more behind it'. This book was an attempt to bridge that division by pointing out how the most extreme materialistic viewpoint would tend eventually to blow open its own walls far more effectively than any spoon-bending exercise. What seemed like two irreconcilable structures of belief would turn out to be just two complementary ways of approaching mystery. This edition contains the original text with new introduction and two further essays plus two stories appended to carry the debate forward into the 21st Century

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a hole in the wall through which your mind can escape.......2006-06-09

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BOOK, and constantly recommend it to everybody I know...

Imagine that we had the ability to create a virtual reality universe in a computer, a universe populated by people who have thoughts, dreams, feelings, etc., and produce societies, religions, wars, and inventions. Now, take this a step further and imagine that the people in this virtual reality invent yet another computer universe. If our virtual model can create another virtual model, what's to say that we're the original?

This is one of the philosophical riddles that Ramsey Dukes investigates in Words Made Flesh, which is a mindbender of a book that has the potential to make your view of life infinitely more interesting. Instead of asking questions about what a virtual world would be like, it encounters how our experience of life would change if we realized that we ourselves are in a virtual world. This possibility has exciting similarities to religious perspectives of Buddhism, Hinduism, Gnosticism, Christianity and others, which identify our material world as an illusory place where our souls take temporary residence in physical bodies.

While the philosophical possibilities of virtual reality form the backbone of the book, the main emphasis of the book is Dukes examination of the way different world views affect our experience of the world... how deeply people can saturate themselves with a particular belief system, and how vividly they experience the world in this way. Some people vividly experience the world as a battle between God and the devil, and every thought and action is weighed against this background. Others cannot accept the existence of things which cannot be immediately experienced by the senses, and perhaps view the world as a byproduct of random physical interactions.

The book does not try to provide any concrete answers, Dukes clearly emphasizes that his hope is to encourage readers to expand their perceptions, and imagine new possibilities. The final chapters of the book give some extremely interesting exercises for readers, to make the books theory a vivid part of their life. Amazing!

This special issue weaves a framework of typical Augmented Reality design issues and considerations, as well as shows how to design usable AR applications and how to support collaborative work by putting AR technology to work. The need for studies evaluating the effect of computerized tools on human cooperation and communication is well justified and documented in the first paper. The second article demonstrates how the current World Wide Web will evolve over time into a Real-World Wide Web. Next, what happens to users of AR when two sources of information interfere is examined. The next two papers present a design case involving two conceptual interaction designs for a frequency converter and a model for bringing the coordination power of workflow management systems to outdoor wearable AR systems. Finally, the special issue concludes with an article showing how AR for assembly processes can be a new kind of computer support for a traditional industrial domain.
