THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING by Norman Vincent
Peale is one of my favorite books . . . so imagine my delight
when I had the opportunity to revisit it recently as a result
of listening to the taped version.

Best of all: Peale did most of the narration . . . while some
could argue that his speaking voice wasn't the greatest (or at least
at the age when he read this particular version), I enjoyed
it even more so because he was the one doing the reading.

His advice from the book remains timeless; i.e., provided you
can get through some of the parts that might be a little
too religious-based for your particular taste . . . I was
able to do so and so was thus able to enjoy such insights
as the following:

* As you think, so shall you be.

* I don't believe people are born negative thinkers. All babies,
unless they're ill, are positive. Positive thinking is extremely
natural. Unfortunately, some babies are born into negative
households. Since they're very susceptible to their
environment, they absorb the negative impulses and attitudes
around them.

* Create a mental picture of yourself as a success. Hold on
to this picture tenaciously. Since your mind tries to complete
what it pictures, always picture SUCCESS no matter how badly
things seem to be going at the moment. Whenever a negative
thought about your personal power comes to mind, deliberately
voice a positive thought to cancel it out.

* Anger, fear and worry are among the most subtle and
destructive of all emotions. To counteract their power, fill your
mind with good will, forgiveness, faith, and love.

* Each time you feel a surge of anger, ask yourself, "Is this
really worth what it is doing to me emotionally? Do I really want
to make a fool of myself in front of friends or family?

* Practice happy thinking. Make a mental list of pleasant thoughts
and pass them through your mind several times each day. If an
unpleasant thought should enter your mind, immediately stop,
reject it and substitute a pleasant thought.

And, lastly, there was this idea that I do try to practice every day:
* Every morning before rising, lie relaxed in bed for a few minutes.
Let pictures of each happy experience you expect to have that
say, pass across your mind. Savor their joy. such thoughts will
cause events to turn out that way.

Talk about comprehensive!.......2003-12-15

This is hands down the most comprehensive resource on all aspects of genealogical research in the Chicago/Cook County Illinois area bar none. I purchased this book when it was new and don't know how else I would have done as much Chicagoland area research without it. Without this book I would have had no idea where to start researching when visiting Chicago and really helped insure I got the biggest bang for the buck when there. Where Ms. Szucs really pays off is breaking out the various municipalities and even offers offbeat sources such as the Medical Examiners Office that I would NEVER have thought of and it's a good thing as I've used that as a resource twice now with great results. Yes, it would be great to have an updated edition with new area codes and telephone numbers, internet sources and the like, but I find those sources can get stale-dated pretty darned quickly! Mrs. Szucs delivers what you need to get the ball rolling and it's always important to double-check local numbers and use those available resources like Google.

Where are the updates and revisions?.......2003-09-27

This is the same 1996 edition in a new cover. A big clue was the list of suburban Chicago libraries still with the 708 area code. Most of them changed to 847 in 1996.
I don't see any mention of the Internet either. There is a lot of info online for Chicago/Cook County research.

The basic information is very informative and I have helped several people by using this book.

I am awaiting the revised edition.

THE BEST BOOK ON CHICAGO GENEALOGY.......2002-03-20

Chicago is rich with genealogy records but if one does not live in or near this vast city it is very hard to obtain those records.

This book, however, has helped me immensely with the research of my husband's Irish Chicago ancestors - what to look for, where to look, where to write. Besides giving a brief history of Chicago and its records, it includes information about the great fire and the destruction of the vast number of public records. But then it gives hints on what to look for when these records are needed by the genealogist and what can be used instead.

The book is chock full of information of libraries, depositories, collections, addresses - everything the genealogist needs to research the City of Chicago.

Be sure to get the most updated version because addresses and prices do change.

The reviews are a few years out of date and some of the restaurants no longer exist. Much of the space dedicated to expensive restaurants where I was looking for more reasonably-priced places.

Fantastic guide for eating your way through Chicago.......2006-08-24

Whether you're a serious foodie or someone who loves to eat, this book is invaluable (if you're in Chicago...) It's quite different from Zagat's (no democratic process), cheap-good-real-food guides like Streets and San Man (which is also great) or Roadfood, or any Fodor's-style restaurant or travel guide. It's just about good food, of all prices, in any location, from tacos to truffles. The "slow food" monkier refers not to the speed of service but to the anti-fast food philosophy/movement (the "Slow Food Foundation") behind this series of books. The philosophy is sort of similar to the Chowhound guides, but I personally prefer the Slow Food ones.

Many famous restaurants far above my budget, such as Charlie Trotter's, are included (especially in the French and American sections), but many (most?) entries focus on affordable options, sit-down or takeout, serving dozens of cuisines in dozens of neighborhoods throughout this vast city. The writers must be well tuned-in to Chicago foodie circles, as the exterior appearance of some recommended places leaves you unsure whether the restaurant still exists, much less prepared for the excellent food about to be served.

On their recent visit to Chicago, two friends and I spent three days basically eating or recuperating from meals at places recommended by this book. We had Costa Rican, Polish, Ukranian, Lithuanian, Indian, Soul Food, German, Cuban, American (diner) and Mexican, all of which were excellent. The indices (by neighborhood and cuisine) and detailed maps make choosing your next target a breeze.

The one drawback we had was that some of the places recommended turned out to no longer exist, despite the book being written the year before. This isn't necessarily the authors' fault (given the lifespan of many restaurants), but do make sure you call ahead first, as some restaurants here are pretty isolated.

Chicago seems a great place to go!.......2005-01-11

A guide to restaurants, markets and bars in Chicago, written by Chicago locals and Slow Food members.

Slow Food has the principles of tradition, conviviality, sustainability, as well as an emphasis on homemade foods.

This guide is divided into three parts: Cuisines (African, British, Vegetarian, Scandinavian, Latin American etc.); Special Foods and Nightlife (Wine Bars, Coffe and Tea Houses, Brunch etc.); and Food Shops, Markets and Producers (Farmers' Markets, Fish and Seafood Markets, Ethnic and Specialty Food Markets etc.). Each description includes the types of meals found at each location, the atmosphere, address, telephone number and average cost for a meal.

There are a few black and white photographs. Most are scenic shots of Chicago, while others are photos of people creating meals at restaurants. This guide seems to be quite helpful and useful despite my not being able to actually go to Chicago and try the book out personally. Though having said that, I will have to say, it is definitely much more detailed than the Zagat books.

Try this little gem out. It is more detailed than Zagats and written by locals! The amount of entries in this book are over 500! There is sure to be some wonderful gems for you to discover on your next trip to Chicago!

Unique and informative guide book for Chicago.......2004-10-30

I have to admit that I generally do not buy guide books, but after seeing The Slow Guide to Chicago in a book store, I knew I had to buy it. It reads more like a great inside story to some really interesting spots in Chicago. They give a snail to the "best" spots - that support the local, sustainable, traditional.... ways - but they also open up a whole new world to some of the much smaller mom and pop stores that you would never know about unless a friend told you about it. A really wonderful book.

Did you know that in 1909 all residential streets in Chicago were renumbered? And that it was not an Illinois state requirement until 1916 to file birth certificates? These are just a couple of nuggets of information you will find helpful in your ancestral research when you read Grace DuMelle's "Finding Your Chicago Ancestors". This book is an invaluable tool for beginners as well as seasoned researchers looking for historical family back ground.

This book is comprised of 16 chapters that aid the researcher in tracing their Chicago
ancestors. Each chapter ends with a Points to Remember section that condenses the information in the chapter into an easy to use checklist. What's also unique is the unintended time line that explains where data can be found for the last two centuries.
Included in this 321 page book are numerous websites and buildings in Chicago and Cook County that house many materials that are not available on line.

This is one of the best genealogical resources for finding your ancestors that I have read. What makes it more unique is that its information is solely targeted for Chicago. But even if you're not searching for a past family member of Chicago, this book is useful because it explains how to research using historical documents. There is so much hands-on interactive information that, with the help of this book, searching for the roots of your family tree will be fun and easy to do.

Grace DuMelle's background in historical research and her connections with many Chicago historical organizations is quite striking. It's a real bonus that she put all that knowledge and expertise into this great book for all to read. Definitely a book to own!

This book was a true pleasure to read! Grace Dumelle has taken what could be a very complicated topic, and she has presented it in an organized and easy to follow format.

I have not done any geneology work, but reading this book inspired me to try to get several questions about my ancestors answered.

I now have a much better sense of where to start my search.

Chicago is very well known for being a home of many great restaurants and delicious cuisine. Marylin Poncius, who grew up on the Southwest Side, was introduced to all types of ethnic food in her earliest years and grew up expanding her taste buds with a wonderful variety of tastes. In her book "A Cook's Guide to Chicago", she put collected what's best in the city and its surrounding areas and put it all together into a great source of information for both tourists as well as Chicagoans. It's a book for everyone for anyone who enjoys cooking and fine foods.

The book is organized into themed chapters, where each type of food has its own chapter. Reading the guide the reader has a chance to travel through many different types of cuisine, such as Italian, Easter European, German, Middle Eastern, Japanese and many more and learn about the main characteristics and specific ingredients for each of them. Each chapter starts with a little introduction followed by the addresses of carefully chosen restaurants, grocery stores or other unique places revolving around food. Furthermore, each chapter has a delicious recipe as well as a grocery list, so we can experience tastes we have never experienced before.

Being an import from Poland myself, I really enjoyed the Easter European part, where I could find an array of Polish stores and restaurants. This is a great help, especially when you just move to Chicago from across the ocean and become homesick. The recipe for home made kolackys will instantly pick you up.

To sum it all up, A Cook's Guide to Chicago is an unique reference book which is very enjoyable to read and even more enjoyable to use in practice to discover the parts of Chicago one had no idea about.

As a frequent visitor to Chicago, I love to take advantage of a big city's resources. I found "A Cook's Guide to Chicago" to be an invaluable culinary guidebook. Written in a humorous and easy to read style, the book demystifies those strange foods I can't identify, and lists stores that carry the exotic foods I love but can't find in my own neighborhood. Better yet, the author offers tips and recipes that feature them. With this book, I'm armed with a resource that enables me to search out foods I didn't even know existed!

Each chapter is filled with interesting facts that make identifying and locating groceries and cooking utensils fun.
(The description of South Water Market made me want to shop there just to see the area.) The book's layout makes it simple to use, and it is thoroughly indexed. The graphic design is a visual treat.

But the best part about this book, for me, is not the facts, but the feeling it gave me while reading it. I fell in love with food and spices and cooking all over again. Suddenly, just going down the same aisle at my usual supermaket to make the same predictable meal just didn't cut it. With these newly defined foods and locations of ethnic grocery stores, I was ready for a culinary adventure. The author's skill in writing, her sense of humor and love of food all combine to portray cooking as a sensual and exotic world. "The Cook's Guide" is the perfect companion to explore that world - I highly recommend it.

I was delighted to have come across this book. While I'm not much of a cook, I like to think that I could be. This book makes it sound easy and, more importantly, FUN. I recommend it to anyone interested in eating, shopping, or cooking or for an "off the beaten track" cultural/culinary tour of our great city of Chicago. Hats off to the author; she probably weighs a ton by now but it must have been an interesting journey. (Great cover, too!)

A Great Resource for Cooks, or those who would like to be........2002-06-26

As a resident of Chicago, I am grateful to the author for writing this book. Now, I know where to have my knives sharpened, buy fresh ginger, and find the best teas.
