Book Description
Failure mode and effect analyses (FMEAs) can actually help prevent failures, defects, and errors, because FMEAs identify special causes of variation before they occur. This is why the automotive industry's QS-9000 standard requires their use. But FMEAs are a valuable tool for any industry in which defect prevention is important.
The Basics of FMEA:
Explains failure mode and effect analysis simply and concisely.
Discusses when to use FMEAs (e.g., during design, manufacturing, etc.).
Shows how to perform FMEAs step-by-step.
The book also discusses the QS-9000 requirement and is an ideal hands-on team resource, training supplement, and reference.

Review of : The Basics of FMEA.......2007-05-10
I have used the FMEA tool prior to reading this book, so now it serves as a great reference handbook. It is just the right size, and does a great job providing instruction in how to use and understand this tool. Grab this one, you won't be disappointed.
Great Basics Book.......2007-02-18
This is an excellent book to get you and your team rolling on FMEA's and their application. I have been doing FMEA's for many years and found this book to be a great starter for my current team that has little or no experience writing FMEA's.
Excellent Quick Reference Guide for FMEA.......2006-11-11
A very useful reference guide for Failure Modes and Effects Analysis. All of the basics are covered along with examples of implementation. Simple step-by-step instructions are listed to aid in the training of FMEA techniques. The authors also mention applying FMEA to non-traditional functions such as Accounting/Finance, Software Design, Marketing, Human Resources, and Purchasing. Highly recommended.
Basic, Yet Useful.......2006-09-21
This isn't really a textbook on FMEA, it is more akin to a Quick Reference Handbook (QRH). It is tailored for beginners and is fairly general, yet I did find it useful, especially to introduce colleagues to FMEA. The book first explains the basic premises behind FMEA with a bit of history (and the relation of FMEA to ISO 9000 and QS-9000) then outlines the general methodology of FMEA in a no-frills manner.
I thought one of the things the book did best was explaining the derivation of the Risk Priority Number (RPN) and the different issues associated with altering the different components of the RPN (severity, occurrence, and detection) in an effort to mitigate the risk of a certain failure. Likewise I appreciated that the book explained the methodology of applying FMEA to not only physical products, but also processes.
The book is very short (75 pages), and can be read in about half an hour. It is not comprehensive (nor does it claim to be) but it is a good pocket reference, and is a good way to introduce FMEA as a concept.
Useful starter.......2005-11-09
Book info: I read the 1st edition that was published in 1996.
Pre required knowledge or literature: None
General: The book is easy to read and does not keep repeating itself, but how could it; the book is in pocketsize and only has 75 pages.
Book content:
For a person new to FMEA, this book will be a good starter. For more advanced users, the book will disappoint. If you look in perspective; there is a lot of introduction (15%); examples / case study (16%) and appendix (21%); what makes the content on FMEA a bit short, but you will still get the big picture. And for only USD 6,-- the price / quality ratio seems reasonable to me.

Excellent Handout for a Training Seminar for Operators.......2006-11-10
I like the basic concepts in this book. It has a manual style about it. Personally, I skimmed through it in 5 minutes. There was nothing here for anyone wanting to do detailed calculations. It is a good textbook for those who only need to know what someone else wants them to do. Knowing why is often a great incentive. If I was teaching a bunch of operators or people with a high school or college freshman level of education, I would probably consider this handbook.
Please vote.
Small And Simple.......2006-02-17
Too small and very simple to introduce a hard topic as reliability engineering
Review of Basic Reliability .......2005-06-21
This book is good, and was exactly what we needed in the company. Summerville did a good job on the book. I like it and recommend it to others.

Excellent GD&T education.......2003-09-08
This text/workbook provides excellent training on the basics of GD&T. The book is easy to read and uses extensive examples. The content makes the ASME standard understandable. The chapters are organized in a logical sequence. The first two chapters provide a very important overview of dimensioning, tolerancing, and an introduction to GD&T symbology. This helps lead you into learning GD&T concepts gradually and solidly as basic elements build toward more complex technology. The book provides a review test after each chapter and a comprehensive final test covering all concepts. Each chapter also has projects for the drafting students and print reading exercises for the manufacturing students. Additional tests, and projects are found in the Instructor's Guide along with sample course syllabi. Use this book if you want a text that clearly and easily teaches you the GD&T basics.
Overly hard reading for given subject matter........2002-08-24
This book is comprehensive in scope but lacks insightful explanations. The overview chapters at the beginning confuse rather than orient the reader. As someone who has done technical writing for a commercial software package I recognize this as the first draft which covers the material but has yet to be rewritten in a way that will best orient the new user. I expect more given the high prices of technical books. As a student I certainly disagree with what the instructors have to say about the book!
GD&T text and reference.......2002-03-17
I am a college instructor, and have taught classes using this text. It is an excellent choice for use in a classroom setting. The chapters are laid out in a logical order so the student progresses through the concepts in a meaningful manner that leads to thorough understanding of the standard. The diagrams and examples are well designed and explained. The chapter exercises, tests, and drawing problems are useful to the instructor and educational for the students.
In addition to being a classroom text, it is a very good reference book for the work place. It will be useful to anyone in the engineering, drafting, inspection, programming and machining departments. The engineer and draftsperson will use this book as a reference to develop drawings that adhere to the ANSI and ASME GD&T standards, and it will assist others in the interpretation of the drawings.
I recommend this book to anyone who is taking a GD&T class or wants to teach themselves this very useful standard.

A teaser on reliability........2007-04-13
First off, I am aspiring to be a CRE. I thought this book might help me on the exam. However, if you look at the book, it is basically a sixty page pamphlet on reliability. A person could surf the net and come up with more information than what is covered in this book. The info in the book is OK, but nothing to shell ten bucks out for. My advice to readers, look elsewhere for a more detailed reliability text book.
As for the information, it was OK and could be of some use in the exam.
Entry Level Definitions/Information.......2006-08-24
This book is for someone who would like to pay $10 for information they can easily receive from simple internet searches. It is not much more than a pamphlet with a high price. I definitely do not recommend this book to anyone unless they are living in a cave and do not have internet access. I was very disappointed.

Description:
This paper discusses the use of genetic algorithms (GA) within the area of reliability, availability, maintainability and safety (RAMS) optimization. First, the multi-objective optimization problem is formulated in general terms and two alternative approaches to its solution are illustrated. Then, the theory behind the operation of GA is presented. The steps of the algorithm are sketched to some details for both the traditional breeding procedure as well as for more sophisticated breeding procedures. The necessity of affine transforming the fitness function, object of the optimization, is discussed in detail, together with the transformation itself. In addition, how to handle constraints by the penalization approach is illustrated. Finally, specific metrics for measuring the performance of a genetic algorithm are introduced.
Book Description
Looking for Information explores human information seeking and use. It provides examples of methods, models and theories used in information behavior research, and reviews more than four decades of research on the topic. The book should prove useful for scholars in related fields, but also for students at the graduate and advanced undergraduate levels. It is intended for use not only in information studies and communication, but also in the disciplines of education, management, business, medicine, nursing, public health, and social work.
This second editon of Looking for Information reflects a vastly increased literature on the topic of information behavior. Among the additions are over 400 new citations to relevant works, most of which appeared between March, 2002, and January, 2006. Many new studies are described in the section reviewing research findings (Chapters Eleven and Twelve), Chapter Nines examples of methods, and a widely expanded discussion of theories applied in information behavior research (Chapter Seven).
*Reviews over 1,100 works -- 60% more than the first edition
*Adds many new studies conducted from 2002 to 2006
*Expanded coverage of models and theories of information behavior
*Many new examples of occupations and roles -- the contexts of information seeking
Customer Reviews:
I'd prefer a 3 1/2 for this book.......2006-04-04
As a graduate student in Library and Information Studies, I was assigned this book in one of my courses. As textbooks in this field go, Case's book is more readable than most. As mentioned by an earlier reviewer, it is an in-depth literature review, and since it is for one of the required courses which had to be taken early on, it will be a useful reference in future classes. In fact, it is a book that I will retain simply as a source of information on possible research material.
The book is well organized and frankly, is one of the nicest as far as materials and construction. The questions at the back of the book, supposedly relating to each chapter, were confusing in that there seemed to be no relationship in many instances.
The one serious complaint that I can make is the tremendous need for editing and proofreading in this edition. The book is replete with incorrect grammar, misspellings, missing words, extra words, etc. Hopefully, these will be corrected in the new edition.
I have to disagree with a Reader from England..........2003-11-06
I'm currently enrolled in a doctoral program in Information Science and, while this book isn't the sum total of all LIS knowledge, I've found it invaluable as a reference on Information Seeking. Few other places will you find this level of literature review laid out in such a compact way. I use it nearly every day in my studies and I'm grateful that Don Case wrote it. It's a roadmap and guidebook for my studies.

The case of a failed survey mission...........2003-01-17
I was excited by the possibility of a suitable overview of information seeking, I obtained the book a.s.a.p. I was willing to forgive the high price in favour of a good text.
It was downhill from there: Unfortunately the text of Donald Case's book fails to impress on any level.
For the scope of the subject matter the book is surprising in the selection of items included and omitted. With some areas appearing rather bald in references and general coverage.
By giving focus to a selection of models that embrace need and sources, and in different aspects e.g. information overload, the portrait is skewed.
To use this book in teaching it would require much more support from supplementary texts and journal articles to correct the omissions.
I cannot recommend this text to students nor to academics seeking a suitable class text.
