Book Description
This book describes a variety of programs -- firmly based in psychological theory and modern decision analysis -- that are suitable for teaching adolescents how to improve both their own decision making skills and their understanding of the decision making of others. Providing practical advice as well as theoretical analysis, this volume addresses general questions such as the nature and rationale of the enterprise, its implementation, and its evaluation. Relevant to several current adolescent problems including drug abuse, this is an excellent source, either as research, new curriculum, or enrichment of old curriculum. br
Product Description
This book is for use with middle and high school students. It shows how to teach 50 prosocial skills such as expressing feelings, apologizing, setting a goal, starting a conversation, and responding to failure. Skills are divided into six areas: Beginning Social Skills, Advanced Social Skills, Dealing with Feelings, Alternatives to Aggression, Dealing with Stress, and Planning Skills.
Customer Reviews:
Good if aggression in adolesents is your area.......2005-08-21
This book is primarily directed at teachers and professionals trying to manage and socially 'skill' aggressive and delinquent adolescents. The book consists of short exercises sandwiched between buffers of explanatory material. The exercises are fairly much standard prosocial activities involving discussions and role-plays. As an overview, or outline, of what to do, these are good. However, the instructional sequences are short, and occassionally vague. My overall reaction to the book is that it needs a companion manual to realise its usefulness. There is also a deal of repetition of points that may or may not be useful depending on the audience. The amount of explanatory text is high for a book that is not theoretically laden down, and this weakened its appeal to me. In my own opinion, it is hard to beat (pardon the pun) for detail Teaching Social Skills from the Boystown Press for this youth segment.
Also Excelent With Training Severely Mentally Ill Clients.......2001-03-20
I was introduced to this book by the co-ordinator of out patient services as a book that she thought highly of in working with adolescents. A chronically mentally ill client from my program was seeing her outpatient for counseling and she thought the book may work well in assisting the client with social skills. On an individual basis it worked very well with the client. We decided to start a group within our program to see how it would work with other chronically mentally ill clients and it has worked extremely well.
Life skills.......2001-03-03
A super book for working with socially challenged youth. High risk kids often get into trouble because they don't possess appropriate social skills, and they are not motivated to practice positive skills. They simply don't see the value. All to often their innappropriate skills have been rewarded in life. This book prepares teachers and adolescent group leaders to develop missing social skills in a step by step well thought out and research proven manner. The book also prepares the leader with great stratagies for recognizing and dealing with trainee/client resistance. Of course in your group you will not experience this. If you really want results and not just feel good discussions with kids this material is state of the art. Highly recommended!
Skillstreaming in a Middle School.......2000-09-22
I came across this book while working with a group of middle school students who were lacking social skills. This book provides step by step social skills information directed at the specific deficiencies. I am looking forward to continuing to work with the information I have gathered from reading this book.
Customer Reviews:
For teacher education academic reference collections.......2002-01-12
Abuse And Neglect by Barbara Lowenthal (professor in the Department of Special Education, Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago, Illinois) is a serious and straightforward look at the classroom teacher's role in identifying, preventing, and intervening in cases of child maltreatment. Chapters soberly and explicitly discuss different forms of child abuse and neglect, how to spot them, legal remedies, and optimal courses of action. Abuse And Neglect is an absolute must-read for teachers of all walks, from public and private school instructors to Sunday School and Community Center teachers. Abuse And Neglect is highly recommended for teacher education academic reference collections and school district teacher in service training reading lists.

From the supplier: Educators can help at-risk youths develop self-responsibility and learndecision-making skills. This entails careful planning, a concerted effort and a sincere desire to forge a positive student-teacher relationship. Educators should become role models to their students, allow them to set goals, provide them with alternatives and let them make their choices. They should also urge students to realize the impact of their actions and accept responsibility for them. A successful program will enable at-risk youths to increase their self-esteem and blend into society's mainstream.

The best book on Dental Benefits in the word!.......2003-11-08
I first met Dr. Mayes during one of my visits to USA, and I had the honor to get in touch with his book "Dental Benefits" when it was still being prepared in his office in Hershey,PA. That time he told me the book will focus also the Dental PPOs, considering the exploding grow on the last years. When finally the book came published, I could confirm not only that PPOs were there, but the were many other interesting subjects related to all the business of Dental Plan in USA. The book is so completed that we invited Dr. mayes to visit Brazil and share your temendous knowledge and experience in Dental Benefits with our local market key executives. The firt Seminar of Dental Plans Management took place at American Chambers of Commerce of São Paulo, 26th and 27th of September 2002 and his book "Dental Benefits" were included for each participant of the Seminar. Since then the wook is largely used for many people, including the Agencia Nacional de Saúde Suplementar(ANS), the federal government agency for dental and health plans regulation. A significant part of Dr. Mayes book was also translated and used by ANS in the Referral Material in their first publication on Dental Plans - "Planos Odontológicos: Uma Abordagem Economica no Contexto Regulatório".
This and many other facts prove that Dr. Mayes book is not applicable for the "American Dental Benefits" , but for "World Dental Benefits" . Certainly it has a great value for the brazilian Dental Market at the present "growing" moment.

Book Description
It is estimated that healthcare reform will push nearly 37 million new patients into dental offices nationwide. Currently, many of these offices do business under traditional "fee-for-service" dental plans. This book instructs the dentist or office manager how to understand the mechanisms of managed care plans, structure the dental office to accommodate them, and expertly analyze the advantages and disadvantages of joining any particular managed care panel. Bryan Quattlebaum is a dentist/periodontist as well as senior consultant for Delta dental plans of California. His text familiarizes the reader with new terminology crucial to managed care and outlines the radical changes in dental practice structures mandated by healthcare reform. In addition, he discusses the key analytical skills needed for assessing multi-panel participation and devising strategies for dental practice survival in the managed care environment.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Book.......2006-03-30
I completely disagree with the first reviewer -- there would be antitrust implications if the Author were to tell colleagues how to "avoid" dental managed care. The fact is that dental managed care participation can work for dentists IF they fully understand the concept of capitation risk AND negotiate a fair contract.
Managed Care in Dentisry.......1999-12-21
This book gives no suggestions for how a dentist can resist HMO's and remain in private practice. The author seems to think that managed care is inevitable and dentists need to get used to the "advantages" of managed care. He never even suggests that independant dentists can stay independant if we reduce overhead expenses and just say "no" to the HMO's.

Customer Reviews:
Dental Managed Care.......2000-11-30
Dr. Quattlebaum has provided the dental practitioner and student with an excellent synopsis of the history and developement of managed care programs. But his strong, pro-managed care position would have more credibility coming from a private practioner citing peer review sources rather than a consultant to the State of California whose major reference is the National Association of Dental Plans (a dental HMO trade association). In fact, the Association of Managed Care Dentists in their current, 2000 survey states "The revenues received from managed care plans are no longer covering even marginal overhead, thereby creating a disincentive for practice expansion. Most likely this is why the vast majority of dentists reported that they are no longer signing up for new plans, and 63% have closed enrollment to some plans presently in their offices." Perhaps Dr. Quattlebaum should actually practice what he preaches for a year and attempt to run a real office at reduced fees before writing a book.

The Best book on Dental Plan management!.......2002-02-22
Dr. Don Mayes was able to represent in a excellent way the knowledge requirements for a professional management of dental care. I have read you book many times and also used it as a parameter for the development of the first commercial dental plan with capitation concept in Brazil, the second largest private health market in the world. I am looking forward reading your next and most modern edition, with a lots of new informmation about the dental plan management.
