Dr. Norman Vincent Peale - Reincarnated.......2007-02-10
After reading this material and hearing Dr. Tice speak, one truth is validated by this book: There is nothing new under the sun. As a theologian, it greatly disturbs me when I read Tice quoting the Bible without formally citing the inspired text -giving credit where credit belongs. His oversights extends with much of Dr. Norman Vincent Peales writings and sermons as well.
The one crucial truth that Tice conspicuously ignores is the depravity of man. Somehow he can't quite bring himself to the reality of the human state --we're all born into the world with a spiritual birth defect called sin and we are in need of divine intervention. He's popular with educators (preferrably middle to high income areas) where the science of positive thinking has appeal. I wish Tice would quote C.S. Lewis.
These positive thinking spins are still very valid however (at least to the degree they are biblical). It's hard not to question the motives of a man who fails to give credit to true sources and someone who lives a very lavish lifestyle.
This Doctor --is the quintessential "spin Doctor" --a theological wantabe and mercenary who packages someone else's work while passing it off as his own, with a new age flair.
Long-Time Fan of Lou Tice.......2007-02-07
My first experience with Lou Tice was in a Corporate Training session in Portland, Oregon in 1978. I really resonated with his approach to personal growth then and when I recently ran across Smart Talk for Achieving Your Potential: 5 Steps to Get You from Here to There, I immediately bought it and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in continuous personal growth as I am.
See and create.......2006-07-09
Makes sense of the concept of "Dreaming to Succeed". Great for all of those 'Hard' psychologists who can't stand 'positive thinking'. Along with Robbins, Tice is the man for achieving your potential.
If you don't know Lou-you don't know jack about yourself.......2002-03-20
Lou Tice is the world' best kept secret. If you read at all about personal and professional growth, don't miss any of Lou's work. In addition to writing, he walks the talk and lives life like what is in between the covers of this book. Like the commercial for a certain spaghetti sauce years ago, "it's in there"--everything you could want to know on how to make your mind your tool instead of your master.
Lou Tice is great.......2000-03-10
I took a class in college that included "Thought Patterns for a Successful Career" by Lou Tice. The man is truly motivational. I highly suggest that more people read his work. It's inspirational!

Well-researched with good info, but only tells part of the story.......2006-12-12
This is not another wide-eyed stroll through the Valley picking out the parts that make the most amazing stories. It's not even about the Valley in general; fairly early on, the book makes clear that it has a rather specific focus: The high-tech worker in Silicon Valley. What makes it different from other books about this subject (a la Nudist On The Late Shift, et al.) is that it's not just a montage of scenes that, to the author, best embody the spirit of the Valley. This book wants to be a serious research-based piece of genuine academia, as evidenced by almost pathological inline citations of information sources, and a correspondingly large list of sources in the back of the book. This list of references is over 20 pages long, so it's clear Hyde knows at least something about what he's talking about. The book is mostly quite non-technical in nature; rather, it approaches its subject almost entirely from the perspective of the social sciences of economics, business, politics, and law.
This aspiration is somewhat hindered by the basic fact that much of the book's content is pure opinion. The author tries hard, most of the time, to be neutral and back up his claims with third-party sources, but just when he's about to make a good point, he tosses citations out the window and simply says what he personally thinks. While there's nothing wrong with this, bear in mind that the driving purpose behind the book really is to push one man's perspective.
Hyde's perspective, though usually moderate, is almost unfailingly leftist. He picks out several key elements of what he repeatedly calls "high-velocity" labor markets. (Incidentally, such markets in general are what the book is really about; Silicon Valley is used as a convenient and contemporary metaphor, but the book claims to be applicable to *all* such labor markets, past, present, and future.) The primary elements that Hyde focuses on that affect technology workers in Silicon Valley are things like short job tenures, unusual compensation practices (such as paying with stock options instead of real money), hiring for specific short-term skills rather than long-term employment, and consistent lack of labor unions for high-tech workers. Hyde sounds very much like a socialist throughout the book, often gently suggesting that perhaps the high-tech industry would be a better place if normal job protections like unions, retirement packages, and long-term career paths were made commonplace in Silicon Valley. The book acknowledges the obvious resistance to these ideas by the industry, which sees its ability to rapidly hire and fire employees and change the nature of employment as key to its success. Hyde maintains, however, that high-tech is a field with very different employment dynamics than other more traditional fields (which is almost certainly true), and that special laws must be implemented for the sake of both the tech workers and their employers (which is more controversial).
Ultimately, Hyde offers several recommendations to deal with the problems of insufficient employee compensation, racial discrimination, and lack of employee career paths, but the book remains conspicuously silent on what is perhaps the most currently troubling--and, arguably, the most unsolvable--problem for high-tech workers: The job market hires only for skills that are currently needed. In a few years, those skills will fade out of demand. What's to be done with the tech worker when there are no in-demand skills left and the worker becomes obsolete? This question stands out today, as the world is now full of people well acquainted and educated in technology, who have no place in the working world because the time when they were employable has come to its end. Full of insights and pertinent information, "Working In Silicon Valley" may nonetheless ultimately leave you with more questions than answers.

If you are in a manufacturing organization and are looking for a cookbook that will let you implement Demand Flow Manufacturing ideas in a smooth manner- buy several copies of this book for your teams.
Although the ideas presented are not new, Tincher does a commendable job of presenting them in a framework that begs implementation.

From the supplier: High-velocity oxygen-fuel (HVOF) thermal spraying coating is a potential alternative to hard chrome plating for coating various types of aircraft, vehicles, ships and their components. Studies conducted by US and Canadian defense agencies and private companies showed that HVOF-coated components perform better than hard chrome-plated parts. Moreover, HVOF coating eliminates environmental and health problems associated with hard chrome plating.

Book Description
This book describes techniques that allow the measurement of arbitrary velocity gradient components in fluids with high spatial and temporal resolution, e.g. turbulent fluids. The techniques are based on the properties of scattered laser light. The book gives a detailed and rigorous treatment of the physical and mathematical background in a pedagogical presentation accessible to students in physics and engineering. From both the theoretical and experimental points of view, four different schemes are discussed in detail; the schemes differ in the way the velocity of the moving pattern of the scattered laser light is measured.

From the supplier: Ford Motor Co. (Ford) formed a strategic partnership with Rockford, IL-based Ingersoll Milling Machine Co. in 1985 to develop a single-spindle machine that can operate at high speeds and at the same time provide flexibility. Their efforts resulted in a radical machine called the High Velocity Module (HVM). Unlike conventional numerical control machines, HVM uses linear motors to move three machine axes, giving the axis drive system higher acceleration and deceleration rates and velocity. HVM has been a vital component of Ford's manufacturing operations and has also found applications in the aerospace industry.
