      Book Description

The authors set out to take mathematical modeling a couple of steps further by emphasizing the decision making process and the communication of results. They approach each topic via a narrative of a business situation and illustrate the model building process, taking great care to emphasize the model's assumptions and limitations. Each chapter is then organized around a clearly defined set of pedagogical features designed to guide the student through the management science process.

3 out of 5 stars Good computer modeling book.......2007-07-12

Used this book as part of a MBA computer class. The website makes it easy to work on different computers since Excel files can be downloaded from website or taken from the CD included with the book.

Exercises were good and followed most of the material in the book. Almost all the material applied to "real world" situations.

      3 out of 5 stars Applied Management Science: A Computer-Integrated Approach f.......2003-04-01

This is a nobel effort. to try to do a very hard thing. The author however is very hard to follow and at times the explanations drifts into incoherance. Also, I think the author may be too brilliant to write for the average student. He might be better served by having a grad student or military trained person break down the book into coherant steps. This book has some gems of useful info, trapped in some bad explainations. The next version of this may be a truly great textbook. My advice to the author is to simplify and go step by step. Delete text and runon paragraphs where possible. If you take a class based on this book, insist on a lab and a helpful grad student.

      4 out of 5 stars nice book.......2000-11-27

It is very nice text book. That what i can say.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Text By Department Chair.......2000-06-13

I was a student at Cal State Fullerton, where these professors teach. This is the worst textbook I have ever read. The text is poorly written. The book doesn't read well and has many typos. I would have expected more from the Management Science Department Chair.

The major emphasis is within the business world where the complex interactions of business systems mix with the often individualistic and interpersonal factors governing decision-making processes. Successful decision-making is achieved through a combination of intuition and quantifiable processes. This text integrates these two areas. A wide variety of topics are introduced with the intention of stimulating readers into further in-depth study of issues of particular interest to them. It has been written in a style that invites reader participation and offers many opportunities for self-reflection, individual research and experimentation.

Mark Teale, Vincenzo Dispenza and John Flynn are all Senior Lecturers and David Currie is Head of the Department of Human Resource Management at the University of Lincoln. All have extensive teaching and industry experience both in the UK and internationally.

I am just learning to be a librarian and this book is the first I have read from my reading list. It sets out how to logically organise a library from start to finish. It sets out a lot of basic principals of management; different types of manager and management roles, why you need to do consumer research and check statistics, how to keep staff happy and improve communications. It is a huge exercise in stating the obvious, but somehow when you have it all displayed before you in charts and bullet points it is very comforting and you know that with this book beside you you'd make sure you were covering every aspect of best practice in the way you run your library. Its interesting to see how the county which employs me carries out almost all the recommendations to the letter.

                Book Description

This book is a pioneering work that integrates functional analysis of a business enterprise with stock market valuation. It goes beyond the convention of financial statements analysis to first evaluate every function of management and then integrate them to total corporate functioning of an enterprise leading to its valuation in the stock market.

Comprehensive sets of ratios are provided for broad managerial functions and their sub-divisions like, production, sale and distribution, working capital, debt-service management etc. A ratio-analytic framework is then developed for measurement and monitoring of the managerial efficiency all the ratios are explained and worked out with live examples.

Financing strategies of growth-oriented companies and a model for determining the unique growth rate of such companies are discussed in detail by drawing examples from several studies made for companies which wanted to grow fast but failed. A theory of corporate bankruptcy and early-warning signals follows this. Stock market valuations of enterprises are discussed with the example of a real-life company. The ratio-analytic model presented in this book is robust in predicting future stock prices of a company. Several models for evaluation of the performance of mutual funds have been discussed with comparative examples.

The book is invaluable for students pursuing graduate management courses and professional examinations such as those conducted by ICAI, ICWA, ICFA, ICSI etc. It will be of considerable interest to professional managers, both at the operational and corporate level and to bankers and institutional lenders for credit appraisal and to stock market investors as an aid to analyse a company’s share price movement.

From the supplier: The Louisiana Commission on Ethics for Public Employees has ruled to eliminate insurance industry representatives from being on the staff or the board on a property-casualty guaranty fund. The commission views the insurance industry's participation in such a fund as a conflict of interests. The insurance industry is concerned that such an action will set a precedent for other states to follow.
