Book Description
Written from the standpoint of the social behaviorist, this treatise contains the heart of Mead's position on social psychology. The analysis of language is of major interest, as it supplied for the first time an adequate treatment of the language mechanism in relation to scientific and philosophical issues.
"If philosophical eminence be measured by the extent to which a man's writings anticipate the focal problems of a later day and contain a point of view which suggests persuasive solutions to many of them, then George Herbert Mead has justly earned the high praise bestowed upon him by Dewey and Whitehead as a 'seminal mind of the very first order.'"—Sidney Hook, The Nation

The founding stone of symbolic interactionist theory.......2005-07-05
This books represents the foundation for a major sociological approach - symbolic interactionism. The essential premise of symbolic interactionism is that all human action is essentially symbolic and that society is to be understood, not as a closed system to be studied in abstraction, but as a network of endless interactions in which human beings symbolically interpret human behavior, speech and thought. Society is the interiorised 'other' or a projected interpretation of societal 'others'. Human self therefore has a free component or I and a bound component or We.
This book is an essential reading for whosoever wants to understand sociology and also the departure of Anglo-American sociology from 'society as a system' approaches. And above all it is a timeless classic that you can enjoy reading for the sheer insights it throws into social behavior.
Book Description
Much of our experience with innovative approaches to governance at the international level involves natural resources and the environment. Whereas the Cold War bred an intense concern with the preservation of existing institutions, the emerging environmental agenda has prompted an awareness of the need for new arrangements to achieve sustainable human/environment relations. Especially notable is the growth of specific regimes to deal with matters such as endangered plants and animals, migratory species, airborne pollutants, marine pollution, hazardous wastes, ozone depletion, and climate change. Nonstate actors have made particularly striking advances in the creation and maintenance of these environmental regimes.
The contributors to this volume draw upon the experiences of environmental regimes to examine the problems of international governance in the absence of a world government. In the process, they address four central questions: Has regime analysis produced a distinctive conception of governance that can be applied to the solution of collective-action problems at the international level? Can we identify the conditions necessary for international "governance without government" to succeed? Does the emergence of regimes in specific issue areas have broader consequences for the future of international society? Can we generalize from experience with environmental issues to a broader range of international governance problems?
Contributors: Thomas Bernauer, Lee Botts, Helmut Breitmeier, Paul Muldoon, M. J. Peterson, David Reed, Olav Schram Stokke, Marcia Valiante, Konrad von Moltke, Paul Wapner, Oran R. Young.

Thought Provoking.......2000-07-04
Something new is going on in the world today. The citizens of planet Earth are trying to solve -- or at least manage -- our common problems of a global nature. And, we're trying to do it without creating a centralized world government. The result is a hodge-podge of treaties, accords, regulations, and inter-governmental organizations that (almost) defy description.
This book takes a look at the international environmental regimes in this mix, and it tries to make sense of them. In the process, the reader can ponder a number of intriguing questions. Like, how is our notion of "national sovereignty" changing as the world becomes smaller? What is "governance without government?" What is the role of global civil society in the creation of international regimes? And, is it possible to measure the effectiveness of the various regimes?
In the end, the author and his contributors raise more questions than they answer, but that's to be expected. It just shows how much we have to learn about managing our world in a cooperative fashion.
As the title suggests, this books is primarily about governance and world order. Don't buy it if you're looking for a description of ecosystems and the natural environment.
But, if you want to learn about how nations, NGO's, and other actors are responding to environmental threats -- and if you don't mind wading through the academic prose -- this could be a good book to put in your shopping cart.

Explains Group Therapy.......2003-05-16
This book was very enlightening for me. Already in group therapy but confused by a lot of what goes on, after I read this book, I finally made progress. I was much less threatened and could let go more, as I now knew what I was supposed to do. It explains what the therapist is doing and his or her goals and techniques. After I read it, in group, I saw my therapist doing the bridging technique and pointing out group resistances, and recognizing that added to the fun of my therapy. The Group Therapy Experience is easy to understand and doesn't hold anything back. It tells how it works and the wonderful things that it does for people. This book is well worth the price.
Book Description
The new edition of Groups reflects the author's unique combination of academic expertise and group consultant experience by including the latest research on group dynamics and the most current views on ways to make working in groups more effective. Napier and Gershenfeld present complex concepts in a way that makes them more understandable, recognizing that students are more familiar with the dynamics of individual behavior and building on that knowledge to teach group theory.
Throughout the text students are presented with tools that help them apply concepts and theories. Case studies provide real-life context and Reader Activities (reflective exercises) and Individual Experimentscreation and observation of group situationsengage students in the learning process by asking them to apply what they learn to their own lives. At the end of every chapter, For Further Information sections list book and web resources to provide an expanded perspective of concepts discussed in the text.
- New! Chapter 10, From Groups to Teams: The Changing Landscape of Organizational Life, summarizes the latest research on the dynamics of teams and applying it to business and mental health settings.
- New! Updated exercises have been moved from the end of each chapter to the Instructor's Resource Manual.

Questionable Reference Causes Doubt.......2001-06-10
On page 19, under the heading of Selective Perception and Communication, the authors indicate that "research" has shown that grades received by teachers reveal bias of the teacher as opposed to the actual level of knowledge of the child. Two specific examples are provided but WITHOUT citation to the supposed research. Since the research material is so well documented in the rest of the book, I question why they did not make the citation available here. I would like to read this research but am left without the option to find it myself. Ironically, my view of everything that I read in this book from this point on will be tarnished by this experience.
A classic book about groups- EXCELLENT resource.......1999-12-31
The authors have been around for a long time, but they still have fresh ideas. Anyone interested in the complexity of groups, should read this book. It is wonderful.

Book Description
This book emphasizes the evolving rather than homeostatic aspects of human behavior. Beginning with theories of complexity and self-generation of behavior, Inghilleri emphasizes the central role of psychic functioning in the domain of biological and cultural evolution. Psychic processes, considered determined, autonomous, and generative with respect to the processes of biological and cultural evolution, are viewed in relation to greater processes of complexity and autonomy of organization. This volume also considers the Theory of Self-Determination, developed by Deci and Ryan, and the Theory of Flow, developed by Csikszentmihalyi, from this point of view. In addition, the theoretical framework offered by Inghilleri is tested in specific fields: academia, creativity, mental health, and culture change processes. Researchers and graduate students across many fields of psychology and sociology will find this to be a valuable addition to the literature.

When I met reconstructionism.........2007-10-07
Love it. It helped me to embark on a whole new journey of processing not just loss and grief, but every other issue that we encounter in life and in psychotherapy. Seeking meaning is the most natural human response to disaster, love, illness, etc. Understanding how the cultural norms and values combine with idiosyncratic, and how this combination defines the outcomes in a person's life - that's immense.
Easy to read, to comprehend, to absorb and to apply.

A Risky Treat...and a Worthy Book!.......2004-02-28
Michael Apter's Dangerous Edge is the first book to look at risk-taking without the condesending and negative judgment about risk-takers. Apter's book looks at risk-taking, and what draws people to it, from many angles. His discussion of boredom, as a prime prompter of risky behavior, is intriguing. And his "tiger in the cage" metaphor (now known as "Apter's Metaphor) is priceless.
My own book, Right Risk (Berrett-Koehler Publishers, 2003), was largely influenced by Apter's work. I am indebted to Apter's great contribution to the study of risk-taking and risk-takers!

Book Description
This text contains an up-to-date survey of theory, research and practice in environmental psychology, drawing on international literature. It adopts the perspective that physical and social factors are inextricably linked in their influence on human behaviour and experience and that the world in which we live is changed and often damaged by human action.; Throughout the text, the issues which are important in contemporary psychology, such as levels of explanation, methodological diversity and the relationship between psychology and other disciplines, are brought to the fore. The text covers established areas of environmental concern and also brings together research on rarely covered topics, such as the effects of smell, colour and light, and the way in which physical environments influence social identity.

Book Description
With full respect for the constraints of the social unconscious, Earl Hopper applies his theory of Incohesion to the treatment of 'difficult' patients in group analysis. The personification of aggregation and massification - patients with crustacean, contact-shunning and amoeboid, merger-hungry characteristics respectively - is illustrated with detailed clinical vignettes from heterogeneous groups, including drug addicts, victims of incest and sexual abuse, and child survivors of the Shoah.

Description:
Differential tax treatment of married and single people is a key feature of the tax code in the US and other countries. We analyze its equilibrium and welfare effects in a matching model with search frictions and nontransferable utility. We find that an increase in taxes on married people unambiguously reduces the equilibrium number of marriages, but it need not make both men and women more reluctant to marry. We also show that it is optimal to give married couples a preferential tax treatment. A quantitative analysis using US data reveals that relatively large changes in taxes are associated with small changes in the number of marriages and divorces. Finally, we extend the model to allow for cohabitation as an alternative to marriage, and find that the number of marriages becomes more sensitive to increases in the marriage tax penalty. The magnitude of the resulting changes, however, is still moderate.

From the author: Policymakers have directed much effort towards reducing or eliminating the so-called "marriage penalty" present in the U.S. individual income tax. However, because the marriage penalty is frequently misunderstood, many suggested remedies do little to reduce the penalty, and in some cases even exacerbate it. In this paper we use the recent income tax reduction proposal of the Bush Administration to highlight some of the challenges involved in reducing the marriage penalty. Using representative couples with varying distributions of income and family structure, we contrast the marriage penalties under current tax law (as of May 2001) with those under the tax structure in the Administration's proposal. Our calculations indicate that it is certainly feasible to reduce the marriage penalty. However, our calculations also indicate that achieving this goal can be a difficult task, with tax reductions and other tax changes sometimes having unintended and unanticipated effects. In particular, the Bush tax plan does not eliminate the marriage tax, and in some cases actually makes the marriage penalty even larger than it is at present. In short, reducing marriage penalties is not as simple as reducing income taxes.

On March 29, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 6, the Marriage Penalty and Family Tax Relief Act of 2001, by a vote of 282-144. The legislation, sponsored by Representative Jerry Weller (R-IL), proposes tax relief for millions of American families by alleviating part of the marriage penalty and expanding the child tax credit in the current Internal Revenue Code. The Senate is expected to begin debate soon on its own marriage penalty and child tax credit legislation. Using data from the 1990 Census, the Internal Revenue Service, and Congress's Joint Committee on Taxation, analysts in the Center for Data Analysis have found that over 25 million married taxpayers would benefit from marriage penalty reform and about 40 million children would be eligible for the expanded child tax credit.
