Good reference book - shouldn't be shilled by employees...

5 out of 5 stars A Diagnosis tool made even better!.......2000-12-16

In addition to improvements to the Planning and Control chapter, which was the strength untill now, this 5th edition has significantly expanded the chapters on Strategy, People / Teams, Quality / Continuous Improvement, and Product Development, making it a more complete tool.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent diagnosis and guide for improvement of companies.......1999-05-21

I have been using Oliver Wight checklists as a support for improving company processes for over 11 years, both as a practitioner and as a consultant. This fourth version has a very detailed chapter 5 (corresponding to MRPII / ERP / Supply Chain Management) and reasonably good chapters 1 through 4. "Non-initiated" professionals may find some difficult and may misinterpret some of the questions, but this will improve as they keep on applying the checklist. Not a pleasant reading but definitely worth using it!

    Book Description

What does excellent manufacturing management mean? Management texts to date have emphasized that it is, above methods such as SPC or TQM, a matter of "intangibles" and "culture". This book takes the myth out of management excellence; it can be learned and practiced: 1. Manage the four core processes, strategy formulation and deployment, product innovation, process development, and the supply chain, and 2. Pay attention to the seven dimensions of management quality, direction setting, integration, delegation, communication, participation, measurement, and employee development. Thus, we argue that an excellent manufacturing manager can move to a plant in a different industry and become, after an appropriate time to learn its specific technologies, an excellent manufacturing manager there as well. This book explains management quality and demonstrates how it is implemented, with nine plant tours through world-class factories from different industries.

5 out of 5 stars Radical Thought Presented With Simplicity and Elegance.......2005-11-06

In this aptly titled book Ernest Huge makes the point that world-class manufacturing is a guiding philosophy of enlightened leadership. All too often, Total Quality Management, Just in Time, Six Sigma, and Lean Manufacturing are presented as nothing more than a series of acronyms, tools, and techniques. Huge goes much deeper, and in so doing rightly characterizes the steep and narrow road to transformation of the workplace.

Only 111 pages long, The Spirit of Manufacturing Excellence is filled with simple yet profound wisdom. Just as one of the foundations of world-class operations is the elimination from the process of everything that is not essential, so the author has focused on the essence of best manufacturing practice. Every concept and idea that is presented adds value for the reader.

Huge begins with a discussion of employee involvement, doing things right the first time, and rapid changeover, which he describes as the three pillars of the philosophy. He then provides a succinct overview of the disciplines of best practice before going on to a discussion of strategic implications and implementation issues.

As the book comes to a conclusion dealing with the necessary cultural underpinnings for corporate change, the reader cannot help but be filled with a sense of expectancy and potential.

Unfortunately this very excellent book is currently out of print. One can only hope that the publisher will recognize its timeless nature and reissue it. In the meantime if you can find a second hand copy - buy it!

As organizations move into the future, the operations environment needs to expand into Collaborative Planning and Forecast Replenishment (CPFR), Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI), and an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) operating system to become and remain competitive. These innovative and complex methods require an unprecedented degree of accuracy and knowledge of the basics in operations management. Back to Basics: Your Guide to Manufacturing Excellence details the key concepts necessary to expertly apply new approaches such as ERP, CPFR, VMI, and much more. Each chapter has everything you need to understand the issues and their implications. Many careers in operations management begin with production and inventory control. When entering this field, you need to know the basics - in a hurry. Developing excellence takes time and usually comes through the "school of hard knocks". Whether new on the job, or brushing up to implement the latest technology, Back to Basics: Your Guide to Manufacturing Excellence gives you the information you need to become an expert - quickly.

        Book Description

Innovation is central to business success, yet no other aspect of business is as frustrating and out of control. Instead of occurring in fits and starts and strokes of genius, innovation needs to become an all-the-time event that's measurable, reliable, predictable, streamlined, and effective. Asserting that every innovation objective has a finite set of possible solutions given its unique constraints, TRIZ, the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving, is a structured system for making innovation more manageable and profitable. Divided into five parts, Insourcing Innovation: How to Achieve Competitive Excellence Using TRIZ demonstrates how the application of a consistent, systematic approach will render innovative problem solving a dependable reality rather than an enigmatic phenomenon. · Part I provides a framework for thinking about business excellence and the case for why TRIZ is a world-class approach for achieving perpetual innovation with existing resources. · Part II covers the tactical aspects of TRIZ, with a central focus on the TRIZ methodology (DMASI) and its primary constructs, techniques, and components. · Part III provides implementation case examples, including an in-depth breakdown of how TRIZ was used to create a self-heating beverage container. This part also summarizes how TRIZ was applied to innovate parts of the International Space Station, the Cassini Saturn orbiter, and even hospital triage. · Part IV transitions from the tactical aspects of TRIZ to its strategic aspects, which show you that no single innovation stands alone. All tap into one or more of eight evolutionary forces to become what they are. This part describes these forces with related examples. · Part V discusses how structured innovation is part of the larger system of "total performance excellence." Highlighting their interdependence, it shows how key aspects of business excellence enable structured innovation, and at the same time are enabled by structured innovation.

Sets forth the distinguishing features of all successful operations and provides the manager with an opportunity to review current operations. The effects of management in peripheral areas such as design, engineering and material acquisition are also considered. Practical in every regard, it offers hardnosed advice for seizing the competitive advantage.

            Book Description

"Much has been written on ABC/M, but it is rare to find implementation secrets put together in such an approachable format."-Ashok Vadgama Manager, Configuration Management and ABM Motorola

Whether you are looking to improve your business's bottom line or streamlining your company's financial decisions, Activity-Based Information Systems provides you with the know-how and expert information you need to get started on the road to success. This is the first book of its kind that examines the complex choices and opportunities available to corporations and individuals embarking on the ABC/M journey. Rather than focusing on the pitfalls of establishing this information system, Mohan Nair outlines-in plain English-the seven keys to establishing the proper conditions for a successful ABC/M implementation. In this unique and groundbreaking book, you'll also learn about:
            * The history and framework behind activity-based information systems
            * The three factors of technology, people, and processes used in implementation
            * How to make the critical move from implementation start-up to education, and on through the production phases
            * Four cases of actual implementation and the unique contribution which ABC/M makes in the pursuit of financially endorsed and IT-maintained operational information
            * The proper checklist to have for basic evaluations of specific information systems

Even the latest high-speed technology and desktop applications now routinely used by corporations around the world, the most essential business information that operating managers and CFOs can use today, is still unreachable. It doesn't have to be. The field of activity-based cost/management (ABC/M) is not simply a cost exercise for technically savvy cost managers; it is a process which can be utilized by nearly any type of business. Implementing an ABC/M project involves focusing on the management of activities as a means to improve the value received by customers, and the subsequent profit achieved by providing this value to customers on a continual basis.

The information obtained from ABC and activity-based management (ABM) is quickly becoming vital for operating managers who rely on a high-quality ABC information system to meet their demands. Now, the president of Oregon's ABC Technologies, author Mohan Nair, meets those demands with Activity-Based Information Systems. Providing a framework for implementing activity-based information systems (ABIS), Mr. Nair, using nontechnical language, examines the strategies for technology evaluation and design, their organizational and financial implications, and technology's limitations. Executives will appreciate the success-ful implementation strategies contained in this book-strategies that are not focused on avoiding pitfalls, but utilized to create the conditions for success.

With proven insights backed by experience, not doctrines, Mr. Nair explains how most implementations have generally focused on the process and people views of an ABC/M endeavor-yet all three views, including a technological view, must be understood and coexist routinely in order to have a truly successful and continuous implementation of ABC/M. However, the book does not simply demonstrate ABC/M and ABIS concepts. Business managers and consultants alike will value Mohan Nair's perspectives on time-based management, business process reengineering, thruput maximization, budget justification, strategic cost management, and profitability management, as well as how these initiatives relate to ABM.

In today's computer-enabled business world, it pays to have an in-depth knowledge of costing, along with an appreciation for capitalizing on the use of systems and software. There is no simple "recipe" for overnight implementation; however, by following Mohan Nair's sevenfold steps to successful ABC/M implementation, your company can create the best conditions for success and meet the future head-on with an activity-based information system that is operationally used, financially endorsed, and IT-maintained.
