The Castle: A new translation based on the restored text
ASIN: 1561631256 |
Amazon.com
Nine paranoid tales by Franz Kafka adapted to stark, black-and-white comics by Peter Kuper, whose illustrations and covers appear regularly in the New York Times, Time and Business Week. More than just straight adaptations, these clever interpretations of Kafka's tales bring out the dark humor latent in Kafka's work, better known for its despair and somberness. Heralded by Rolling Stone, Kuper's art is bold, powerful, and perfectly suited for Kafka.

Visual improvisations.......2006-01-31
From the introduction by Jules Feiffer:
"To 'classically illustrate' Melville, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky et al doesn't make them accessible, it makes them mute... add pictures and panels and balloons to the text, and the secret of communion that gives fiction its power is betrayed... Kuper... doesn't do what I hate, he does what I love. Jazz. This book is a series of riffs, visual improvisations on short takes by the old master. It becomes a diverting, even daring, high wire act... and it works. Like Bird doing "Embraceable You", it may not be Gershwin, but it's art. And I, for one, talk back to it."
Peter Kuper never writes text for his for-the-sake-of-argument-let's-call-it comics; if, for some reason, he does use text, he borrows it from Kafka. Give It Up! is a collection of short stories by Kafka adapted by Kuper, prior to his more ambitious attempt with 'The Metamorphosis', published separately; for the most part, the stories in this collection are better. Kuper stretches the bounds of sequential art with these stories, and comes up with stuff that is highly expressive and incredibly communicative, and compliments the old master's text perfectly while also making them entirely new. That much can be seen from the very first story, 'A Little Fable', one of Kafka's most famed creations -
"Alas, the world is growing smaller every day. At the beginning it was so big that I was afraid, I kept running and running, and I was glad when at last I saw walls far away to the right and left, but these long walls have narrowed so quickly that I am in the last chamber already, and there in the corner stands the trap that I must run into.
You only need to change your direction, said the cat and ate it up."
Kuper spreads this very short text - and one of the most beautiful and succinct written in the English language - over four pages, but what he does with them is absolutely awe inspiring, so that it's criminal to even refer to it as comics. He resigns to none of the common assumptions and rules of the medium, and instead lets his imagination run wild and uses the page spreads and compositions serve as a tool to help create the very feeling of claustrophobia that the text does, but he never loses touch with the reader who always knows exactly how to interpret the pages. In 'The System' Kuper performed the difficult task of creating truly communicative and involving comics with no text whatsoever; he manages an equally impressive fit in these short stories. This is a beautiful book and highly recommended to any comic book reader and any art and/or literature lover.
A Perfect Match.......2002-08-26
Kafka stories, with Kuper artwork. Kuper's style seems to match Kafka in a very pleasant, memorable way...
Tremedously powerful representation of Kafka's short stories.......1997-06-12
Brilliant interpretation of Kafka's nine short tales by illustrator Peter Kuper.
This thin book is neither for the faint-hearted nor for those who prefer a light-hearted comic read.
Kuper brings into powerful focus the intensity and dark, twisted side of humanity as Kafka would have wished it done.
One is literally drawn into the stories by the compelling and solid strokes of the artist.
A graphic novel of the highest standard

Oh dear, have I lived too hard or what? I didn't find this book nearly as positive an experience as many seem to have!.......2007-04-05
Do you ever walk through the Supermarket checkout and find you've picked up an impulse buy, some piece of horrid confectionary or something equally valueless just because it was there as you were making the purchases you wanted? That question about sums up how I came to be the owner of this book. It's little more than a little book of pretty little pictures of people simulating sexual intercourse with a text that tries to give itself credibility with casual references to the Kama Sutra etc. No sense of celebration, or the blissed out unity of true spirituality and connection.
If you treat your sexuality like a gymnastic event where you are graded on achieving x position successfully and possibly judged on technique and artistic style and you want a pocket Training Manual, this might be the one. If your heart, your head and your training are in the right places, you and your willing partner will find all the same things as are to be found in here on your own but you will not look bored and disinterested (as those in the photos), you will look like the Universe is sending a rush of Life energy through you with force and you are reaching highs you never knew before, why? Coz that's what will be happening.
I'm sure much must be handled very carefully to produce a product like it seems this book hoped to be. Sadly without the sense of celebration, abandon and togetherness that should be the greater part of what something like this conveys, it might as well be a text and photos about picking each other's noses for mutual pleasure.
Cheers
Lloyd
Fun & Provocative.......2007-02-05
This book is a great little addition to the nightstand or coffee table.
The positions and the pictures are always likely to spark some ideas or
even inspire you to take hardcore action on the spot.
The text that goes along with the pics is well-written and evocative.
Nice.
Not too bad.......2007-01-16
The pictures often have nothing to do with the positions/descriptions they are near. The layout was more distracting than anything. Descriptions and quantity of positions are pretty good, though.
Well written, tasteful, and pleasing....but...........2006-12-06
This book is not for the couple that is already 'A Little Bit Naughty'. Naughty meaning unrepressed (uninhibited) in the bedroom. If you've already been 'experimental' with different sexual positions, then this book offers very few new ideas and some that are offered looked downright uncomfortable to the point of painful - see below.
Some of the positions offered for consideration are not naughty at all. For instance:
1) The Missonary (Man on top, woman on back).
2) The woman on top (called the Rodeo in this book).
3) The Wrap Around (Bascially the Missionary Position with the womans legs wrapped around the man.)
Even though considered standard positions, in defense of the author, they do offer variations on the 'theme' (such as pillows or wearing lingerie).
Painful (uncomfortable) Positions offered:
1) The X-Factor: The man sits on the bed and the woman (facing him)
slides onto him...then the both lean back...creating an X. Not terribly comfortable (probably quite painful for the man) and orgasms would entail some work.
2) Stairway to Heaven: The woman stands on the first step of the stairs, the man enters from behind, then grabs one leg and holds it up. I suppose it would be arousing to be in that position, just for novelty sake, but orgasm (for the woman) would be hard to come by.
3) The Wheelbarrow. This is self-explanatory and sorry, this just seems demeaning and silly.
Like other reviewers: I enjoyed the breakdown of each position: How to do it, What is right with it, What's wrong with it, and Variations on the Theme. The pictures were very good and tasteful and the book describes the positions very well.
Overall, however, not for the person (or couple) that has already been a little bit naughty.
Some things are easier . . . when you get older! Really!.......2006-11-22
After spicing up my sex life with the more exotic (anal sex and deep-throating), I was wondering if there might be fun things to do closer to home (as in "intercourse"). As it turns out, quite a bit!
This tome's cute title, "the little bit naughty book of SEX positions" caught my eye -- that and its "50 tastefully explicit color photos." The text turned out to be quite informative. And the photos (even without showing the most intimate contact) were exceptionally clear and helpful.
As background, I remember trying many sexual positions at some point in my life, but I guess it's easy to fall in a rut.
I also remember that when my husband was much younger, like many young men his penis liked to stay close to his body when erect - which greatly limited the number of positions he found comfortable. I'm happy to say that some things get better with age - and a more supple erection is definitely one of them! Needless to say, once this newfound capability came to light -- my husband became quite enthusiastic! (Down boy, down!)
The chapters are arranged very logically: woman on top, man on top, side by side, sitting down, standing, sexplosion (more orgasms), rear entry, anal sex, simultaneous oral sex positions (69's), kama sutra, and a section for advanced lovers only (only the most supple penises need apply).
But the feature which really sets this reference apart - is how each position is laid out (get it?) in detail. How to do it -- What's right with it (pro) -- What's wrong with it (con) -- and Variations on a theme - are the headings.
The "What's right with it" section really goes into detail on the advantages of each position -- for both men and women -- and how it differs from other seemingly similar postures. The "What's wrong with it" portion tells you what you're giving up by using this geometry.
Lastly, the "Variations on a theme" items are simply costume and accessory (handcuffs, toys, etc.) suggestions to use for each position.
As an example of what you'll find, there are probably a half-a-dozen variations on the missionary position - mainly involving different leg positions for the girl (and the guy) -- and their resulting sensual differences for both sexes - which are surprisingly more significant than you might think!
Here are some of our biggest discoveries as a couple:
* That the number of positions now open to him (get it?) has increased tremendously due to his greater flexibility.
* That even if he weren't more flexible, the book contained several new postures his "younger" self would've enjoyed (where the couple's bodies are kept closer together).
* That some positions are more conducive to female pleasure, either in terms of stimulating the clitoris or g-spot, or allowing for masturbation.
* That there are many positions that are often times more easily performed - outside the bed -- such as sitting on the floor, in a chair, or on the kitchen counter! (And "no," I didn't try the "wheelbarrow.")
Some of our favorite new positions included standing with one leg up, sometimes using a staircase (to accommodate different heights); sitting in a chair facing away from him; kneeling on the bed with my knees apart; and sitting on the kitchen counter!
Two of these activities are now possible - since the kids aren't always home! And the other two are enjoyable since they allow me easier access to myself -- for masturbation - which is a pleasure I discovered while learning to give anal sex!
As suggestions for the author - it would've been helpful to also have a few sections on oral sex (for both him and her), and one for deep-throating.
To conclude - you're never too old to learn new positions - especially since they NOW might be easier to perform! Let the "little bit naughty book of SEX positions" - SHOW YOU HOW! Enjoy.

What's next--The Girl Scouts: The Untold Story? How could anybody write a debunking book about Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity order? Well, in this little cruise missile of a book, Hitchens quickly establishes that the idea is not without point. After all, what is Mother Teresa doing hanging out with a dictator's wife in Haiti and accepting over a million dollars from Charles Keating? The most riveting material in the book is contained in two letters: one from Mother Teresa to Judge Lance Ito--then weighing what sentence to dole out to the convicted Keating--which cited all the work Keating has done "to help the poor," and another from a Los Angeles deputy D.A., Paul Turley, back to Mother Teresa that eloquently stated that rather than working to reduce Keating's sentence, she should return the money he gave her to its rightful owners, the defrauded bond-holders. (Significantly, Mother Teresa never replied.) And why do former missionary workers and visiting doctors consistently observe that the order's medical practices seem so inadequate, especially given all the money that comes in? (Hitchens acidly observes that on the other hand, Mother Teresa herself always manages to receive world-class medical care.) Hitchens's answer is that Mother Teresa is first and foremost interested not in providing medical treatment, but in furthering Catholic doctrine and--quite literally--becoming a saint.
Book Description
Recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, feted by politicians, the Church and the world's media, Mother Teresa of Calcutta appears to be on the fast track to sainthood. But what, asks Christopher Hitchens, makes Mother Teresa so divine? In a frank expose of the Teresa cult, Hitchens details the nature and limits of one woman's mission to the world's poor. He probes the source of the heroic status bestowed upon an Albanian nun whose only declared wish is to serve God. He asks whether Mother Teresa's good works answer any higher purpose than the need of the world's privileged to see someone, somewhere, doing something for the Third World. He unmasks pseudo-miracles, questions Mother Teresa's fitness to adjudicate on matters of sex and reproduction, and reports on a version of saintly ubiquity which affords genial relations with dictators, corrupt tycoons and convicted frauds.

appeals to the basest in man.......2007-09-26
There is an urge in most of us to find the "clay feet" of great people. We cannot stand greatness, especially moral greatness, in others. Why? Because it is a reproach to us. It reminds us of what we are not. Let us just step back and ask ourselves: has Hitchens ever worked among the poor, let alone dedicated his whole life to them? No. He sits in comfort, aiding neither the poor, nor really anyone else. Has he invented anything? Come up with a useful theory? Brightened anyone's life in any way? Has he even uncovered truth as a journalist? No. He is just an angry opinion monger. When he has made even a single life happier, then he will have earned the moral right to judge Mother Teresa.
Good, but needs more work.......2007-09-22
Firstly I will point out that I have been an atheist as long as I have been able to decide over such matters. I group a belief in religion in the same box as Santa Claus and the tooth fairy.
At only 98 pages, this is more a short story or pamphlet than a book. That said, it is very good at exposing the fairly obvious hypocrisy of Mother Teresa and the religious organizations that surrounded her.
Christopher Hitchen's makes particular issue of the fact Mother Teresa used her influence with several world leaders to raise funds for the catholic church. I think where the book lets itself down(and could have been expanded), is that she was only keeping the company of those who engage in similar acts of breathtaking hypocrisy themselves. I'd like to think the reader would realize this, but a reminder would be useful. It's probable most of the leaders she met knew this anyway, but were more interested in being associated with the cult of Mother Teresa, and for her part, the motive was the same.
Mother Teresa was a dedicated catholic (I'm loathe to use the word `good' in any religious context) and her mission was to support and spread Catholicism so her views on abortion and birth control are hardly a revelation. The book does expose the fact that the amount of money received would have easily kitted out several decent hospitals. Hitchen's rightly points out that the Mother Teresa cult was more about creating a catholic monument to the suffering poor than relieving suffering. The catholic church came first, the poor a distant second, but then I don't think this was kept a secret by Mother Teresa. It was the cult surrounding her that seemed to elevate her status as helping the poor. Was some suffering relieved? Yes, but nowhere near as much as was possible and suffering was also made worse.
As regards her likely sainthood, again this is really just the catholic posthumous version of the Congressional Gold Medal or knighthoods etc around the world. Though the catholic church assigns a god or goddess status to those given a sainthood, my own view that this is just nonsense anyway, particularly as the recipient is dead, and wasn't really something I could get hung up on. I know Christopher Hitchen's has petitioned against her becoming a saint, but I hope this was just to highlight to those who perhaps weren't aware of the hypocrisy surrounding this. My own concern is that he perhaps gave the sainthood process far more credibility than it was due. My own view is that this is just a cult within a cult.
I give this book four stars as he has taken on a subject that needed tackling but, like Richard Dawkins books, a revised and expanded version to combat some of the criticisms both here and elsewhere is long overdue.
Interesting for sure..........2007-09-14
Christopher Hitchens' dissection of Agnes Bojaxhiu, aka Mother Theresa, is certainly an intriguing read. He raises valid points throughout regarding, for example, her mercenary attitude towards accepting monetary donations, even from blackguards and scoundrels like Haiti's "Baby Doc" and the Charles Keating. He likewise discusses at length her strange views on the holiness and spiritual value of suffering versus the value of actually giving people material comfort in this life. Indeed, this work is at its strongest when Hitchens is skewering Bojaxhiu's seemingly rather daft moral philosophy. The testimonies he has collected from former associates and sisters of her order are also very thought provoking.
Sadly though, this work just doesn't feel...finished. Weighing in at a little less than a hundred pages and not citing nearly as many direct sources and I'd prefer, this book may not be worth the rather high (for its length) list price. "The Missionary Position" will certainly get you thinking, but it doesn't quite satisfy completely.
especially important now.......2007-09-12
there has been a renewal of interest in Mother Teresa recently, what with the tenth anniversary of her death and the publication of her private letters. with all the high words of praise that are bandied about, it seems important to consider the beliefs and actions of the woman. there has been very little focus on what she believed in, besides helping 'the poorest of the poor.' this book may be obviously skewed to a particular point of view (aka an atheist one), but it does look at what she actually did. it also considers the opinions of people who worked directly with the nun and her organization and had a less than rosy picture of what her institutions were like.
there are some aspects of her life that are extremely contradictory - I think especially of the tremendous efforts that went into treating her as her health deteriorated in her old age, compared to the refusal of basic treatments to patients in her clinics - and I think that the Catholic Church should consider carefully before elevating her to the status of sainthood. Mother Teresa was a reactionary, and there's no other way to look at it. Her almost fanatical opposition to abortion, or indeed any form of birth control, was evidenced in the speech that she gave when accepting her nobel peace prize (I still don't quite understand why she received it). The reluctance with which useful treatment is employed in her clinics is (to my mind) ridiculous. God may want us to suffer, but does God really want us to die of an easily cured disease?
perhaps most damaging to her reputation is the evidence of tremendous amounts of monetary gifts which her organization has received over the years, yet the apparent lack of use to which this money is put. if needles are used in her clinics even after they are dull, where is the money going? I would never imply that she would have used such money in an immoral way, but it does seem that it hasn't been utilized as fully as it could have been, at least during her lifetime.
one final note involves the personal letters which were published so recently. Mother Teresa mourns that she had to live so long without the presence of Jesus, and notes that if she ever became a saint it would be as a saint of darkness. I thought that being a saint meant you wouldn't think that you could become a saint. isn't this a sign of hubris that is inappropriate in a candidate for sainthood?
LAUGHING!!!.......2007-08-31

A bit confusing.......2006-05-25
I liked idea of suspense story book set in Caribbean but plot is a bit thin and there are a lot of improbable scenes like selling your own baby, extremely rich and spoiled daughter has dozens of lovers, stretched limos on tiny island...
There are more interesting stuff in some history books about real Caribbean islands.
humorous novel set in Caribbean; ideal summer reading.......1999-04-08
The Missionary's Position by Gary Buslik. Sunny Books, New York, NY. 1999. 300 pp. $12.95 trade paper.
The author claims to have gotten the inspiration for writing his humorous novel The Missionary's Position from being hit on the head with a coconut while vacationing on a Caribbean island. Set on two fictional Caribbean-like islands named Snow and St. Ursula, the novel follows the adventures--misadventures--of a zany cast of characters including the director of a local historical society, Philip Doyle; the fantastically wealthy Roberta Gibbleman and her mischievous daughter Wendy; and the comical despot Austin Sewer. The foil for setting these and related characters scheming and vying with one another is the competition between Doyle and Sewer to make their respective islands of Snow and St. Ursula the leading tourist attraction. A travel writer turning to fiction with this novel, Buslik hits just the right note in humorously portraying the carefree, gay ambience of a Caribbean island vacation spot and the casual, insouciant, dreamy but feckless behavior of its inhabitants. Page after page his writing is fresh and light-spirited--making The Missionary's Position ideal summer beach or travel-cruise reading.
Henry Berry, Book Reviewer Editor/Publisher, The Small Press Book Review
Intelligent, clever, and very funny book!.......1999-04-02
Combines amazing literary skill with an outlandish, sneaky sense of humor which will have you laughing out loud. Images of the Caribbean, and Buslik's very colorful and satirical characters come alive. It's action packed, with enough twists and turns to keep you turning the pages like a high speed robot. I am buying this book for a friend of mine who is heading for Barbados.
Everyone I know is buzzin' about Buslik's funny, new book!.......1999-03-30
Facsinating new author Gary Buslik bursts onto the literary scene with "The Missionary's Position", a completely delightful read. Buslik's descriptions of the story's tropical setting are intriguing, always lively and very accurate I'm sure (based on the fact Buslik shows up here on local Chicago radio's Travel Doctor as the Caribbean travel expert). Buslik demonstrates a skillful hand while illustrating the foibles and comic situations in this engaging story. I laughed often while reading the dialogue between the despot Sewer and the Gibbleman brat. Buslik has a terrific knack for writing dialogue and should write this book's script if it should come to bear Hollywood fruit. Read this book and have a great time, it's so much better than the majority of so-called Hollywood entertainment now playing. Buslik's plot is fresh and I'm hoping this highly original story has it's day on the big screen very, very soon.
This book was a delightful read!.......1999-02-26
Not usually a binge reader, I devoured this entertaining book in a little over a weekend, unable (or just unwilling) to put it down. I simply did not want to leave the island of Snow. The characters are definitely quirky, but Buslik keeps them believable, and consistent with themselves. The writing itself is smooth, with an intelligence and cleverness that never struck me as arrogant or clever for clever's sake (and actually managed to make me chuckle out loud at times, which I don't often do when reading). I've never been to the Caribbean, but suspect the details offered of the setting will please those who have. It has certainly made me want to plan a trip. I cannot figure out a way to discuss the plot without giving something away, but it definitely kept moving and held my interest and attention throughout. Lost me only briefly at one point (in terms of believability), but pulled me right back in very quickly. Overall, an off-beat and highly entertaining book.

Angie Benedetto is a smart-mouthed Brooklyn girl who's neighborhood customs chafe her as much as her plaid-flannel Catholic school uniform. Angie dreams of flying airplanes, traveling to exotic places and finding a guy who doesn't think high-roll collars and a duck's ass hairstyle mark the height of sophistication. After Angie's mother allows her to fly for her 'Uncle Anthony' as a missionary pilot, Angie reports the murder of Asmat natives. She becomes a tool for her 'Uncle's' plans to gain control of a gold mine and the quarry of mercenaries who protect the new owner's possession of the same mine. Charles Abbott Aldridge is a proper New Englander who wants to study primitive tribes, help his father, and be left alone to live his life. Charles, lost and presumed dead for half-a-dozen years, is the only man who can help Angie. Smart-mouthed Angie needs proper New Englander Charles to escape from those people looking to kill her and Charles needs Angie to help his father. Angie's Uncle Anthony must deal with Angie's mother alone.

The Missionary Position.......2001-01-04
I enjoyed the book very much. I was especially impressed with the discription of the territory in which the characters found themselves. Having spent time in the Irian Jaya area I could relate to the subtle yet dramatic differences of the cultures they had to contend with. Mr. Dinlocker has done a remarkable job in combining the natural resistance to change felt by human nature and the compassion required to accomplish the task at hand. I'm looking forward to more of his works.
Great read, couldn't put it down. Culturally interesting!.......2000-12-03
The author has lived and worked in a range of third world countries in relative calm and combustion. His experience gives the book a sense of current reality as well as political and religious intrigue.
INTRIGUING, INTERESTING, ADVENTURE.......2000-11-16
Recommended for readers who like foreign intrigue and adventure, with New York/Italian and Indonesian reality mixed in. Set in the 1970s in a world unknown to most of us; provides some insight into another culture and non-governmental expats. Captivating and fun.
From New York to the Mountains of Indonesia.......2000-10-28
When Angie Benedetto looked at the planes flying overhead in New York City she did not see transportation. She saw freedom. Freedom from her mother's expectations for a good Italian girl and freedom from the expectations of the boys/men in her life who were choosing a life path for her. She dared to make her dream a reality and became a "bush" pilot in Indonesia. Her flight path takes her over something she should not have seen and from that point forward her life spins out of her control. As she flees her pursuers, the reader is treated to a gritty and realistic view of the Indonesian culture in the Asmat as well as other tribes.

If you simply want to read all of the Tory Bauer mysteries and are not a serious collector, read the readily available "Funeral Food" which is the same story, renamed and published for mass market by Avon.
