Imagine you've finally snagged that long-awaited promotion to the ranks of management and you're suddenly faced with your first official presentation before the boss, first interview with a job applicant, first contact with a "demotivated" subordinate, or first truly critical decision. If there is no one you can comfortably turn to for assistance--a common problem today for many in this position--the Essential Manager's Manual, by consultants-communicators Robert Heller and Tim Hindle, could prove invaluable. This logically organized encyclopedia of leadership fundamentals concisely explains the basic actions required in these and other common corporate scenarios, making it a useful resource for information on business communications, time management, decision-making, and a broad array of personnel issues ranging from motivating a staff to realizing when they are suffering from stress. "Stress can be infectious, so you need to recognize it in others before it affects the people with whom they work (including you). There are many ways of reacting to stress; learn to notice common warning signs so that you have time to decide how to react," begins this representative section, before going on to offer specifics on spotting and mitigating its potential impact. --Howard Rothman

2 out of 5 stars Too basic for practical use.......2007-09-09

This book tries to cover too many topics. It isn't detailed enough to even be a good reference. The only use I could see is for someone who wants a quick overview of one of the topics. If you have the slightest clue about what you're doing, spend your money more wisely on a book devoted to the topic.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for First time Sipervisors.......2007-01-16

This book is really a must have for first time Supervisors or Managers. Is is very simple, strait forward, and helpful with great illustrations. It is great for brush ups on some subjects that may not rise often. I always arm my management team with this book as well as Who Moved my Cheese.

5 out of 5 stars A REALLY great manual.......2002-10-21

The book is really amazing. I'm a business administration undergraduate student who bought this book...

Reallly... It IS an very VERY valuable source for both students and managers themselves... I highly recommend it...

5 out of 5 stars Quick Reference!.......2001-12-12

The manual is trying to cover all the essential areas of management. It is an ideal reference book for those who wants to have a peep into the management field. For those who are in the advanced stage of management this book may serve to refresh the basics.

It is a good book for the entry level personnel in the management field.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive!.......2001-05-07

Robert Heller is a leading authority on management consulting. he was the founding editor of Management Today. He is the author of many acclaimed and worldwide best-selling books including: The Naked Manager, Culture Shock, The Way to Win and The Complete Guide to Modern Management.

If you want to eventually move into a management position or want to reevaluate yourself and see how you can improve on your management skills, then you might want to have a manual of manager's secrets close at hand.

In today's fast-moving business world, organizations are constantly evolving. In an aggressively competitive marketplace, you will be expected to deliver better and better results. The most successful business managers will recognize the need to adapt and change and continually examine the way they work. By developing a wide range of skills and keeping those skills up to date, they will excel in their job.

This guide covers the most important aspects of business life. It covers interpersonal and professional skills. The sections on communication, time management and dealing with stress, contain advice that is applicable to a conventional and unconventional office environment.

In today's office, there is also a range of new technology which has revolutionized the working lives of millions of people around the world. You will find practical advice on all the key areas of business management. The book is fully illustrated and has annotated photographs, charts and flow diagrams. 1,200 quick-reference power tips (like: "Remember that honesty is not the best policy; it is the only policy") cover every management situation. There are checklists, points to remember and do's and don'ts. Case studies help to focus on real-life management problems.

The section on matching an applicant to a job will be helpful to managers who do their own hiring. How do you handle hostility in the office? The sections on body language were right on. You will see pictures of various poses which will "betray" you. I love body language because it shows what people are really thinking.

One thing I always remember was when a new manager comes into an existing team. If they act too controlling without first gaining respect, the team will rebel a bit. It is better to be relaxed, yet confident. This is the type of information you will find and it is very practical. While some managers may already know this information from personal experience, I simply can't imagine anyone would know everything in this comprehensive manual. I think everyone could take away many points which would make them more successful.

As they say: "Avoid people and situations that tempt you to behave in ways you are not happy with. Hey, this book could be great for anyone! I also loved how they said: "You have the right to make genuine mistakes without feeling guilty. You have the right to refuse other people's excessive demands on your life."

I don't know, maybe this isn't only for managers. I sounds like a survival guide to life in the workplace.

Classify this itsy-bitsy book as a project management guide that isn't a project to read but that distills all the basics for you into a quick thumbnail guide on everything from establishing objectives and keeping to schedules and budgets to providing effective leadership and tackling problems efficiently. Along the way, simple checklists enable you to be fully prepared at every stage, from starting up to closing down, and accessible diagrams and flow charts explore different options for action and provide useful examples. Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do you just fine.

It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty li'l books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies book series's talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-size bits and sidebars with Dorling Kindersley's signature design style of crisp, classy graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective. Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last few pages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for more in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so cute and look so smart in a neat little stack or row that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire staff or department. --Timothy Murphy

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars introduces computers and what forensics means.......2007-04-27

This is a very quick introduction to the essentials of preserving evidence on a computer, in a way that can withstand adversarial scrutiny. In its own way, the book is a runthrough on the essence of how a computer works, as jargon-free as possible. Ranging from describing binary and hexadecimal notation to what a BIOS does.

Then there is a discussion of dangers: different types of attacks. Prominent are those coming over a wireless network. A symptom of many people nowadays having laptops and accustomed to going to some wireless hotspot like a coffeehouse and booting up. There are some pitfalls for the unwary. Malware is also covered in the text. Trojans, spyware, keystroke loggers and other demons.

However, perhaps by deliberate design by the author, there is only a broad discussion about how to preserve a computer. The text may be best as a rapid read, and you then need to progress to more advanced books.

Even Hamlet, that famous equivocator, might not have been so stymied by the question "To be or not to be?" if he'd had this snappy little 72-pager on hand to help him make up his mind. Here, you'll find quick-and-dirty advice on the crucial three phases of making a tough decision, both on and off the job: identifying your unique decision-making style, and weighing it against your organizational culture; reaching a decision by identifying the key issues and people to involve, generating ideas and assessing their validity, gathering information and using models, minimizing risk and employing fail-safe strategies, and getting approval and support for your final decision; and implementing your decision, from communicating it to others and overcoming objects to it to monitoring its progress and building on it over time. On every page here, boxed tips, mini case studies, handy checklists, and easy-to-follow flow charts help you through the process--including how to handle other people's decisions and assess your own decision-making ability. Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you might find this book too cursory and general in its approach. 5 out of 5 stars What should I do?.......2001-05-08

Robert Heller is a leading authority on management consulting. In this practical guide, he shows us how to make effective decisions. This will allow you to identify your own decision making style.

"Always try to balance an intuitive hunch with sound logical analysis." -pg. 10 "Encourage people to speak out by praising, not damning, new ideas." -pg. 29

I felt this book has some great ideas for encouraging the creative process. I also loved the point which stated: "Be prepared to accept people's advice if you have asked for it." -pg. 24. It is so annoying to be asked for an idea, only to have your creative idea disregarded or worse, completely rejected.

Are you thinking about who will be affected by your decision? Does your staff have the information they need to make the tough decisions?

I really enjoyed reading this book and felt it would help managers to promote a team environment. People are creative and when you allow them to give you input, you just can't help but gain their respect and admiration. When you make your employees feel appreciated, that is a key to your success.

3 out of 5 stars Suggests Aiming a Decision-Making Elephant Gun at Problems.......2001-03-23

Decision making should vary enormously in how much time is invested in it, from issue to issue. Studies have shown that relatively few decisions account for almost all of the benefit that an organization gets from choosing better paths. In this brief guide, the issue of which decisions to focus on receives far too little attention. The template given is one that would be used for pretty heavy duty issues, but short of the most important ones. As a result, most people will not get the guidance they need to make the right kind of decisions for the day-to-day, less important matters. To its credit, the book emphasizes the benefits of keeping lots of people involved in examining problems, looking for solutions, and commenting on the decisions while they are in process.

The book has a number of flaws that I found annoying. First, there are few examples. And the examples that are included are printed in small thin blue type on a yellow background. I practically needed a magnifying glass to read them. Second, the sequencing of the issues to address in a decision seemed to be out of order. For example, gathering information is mid process. For many decisions, gathering a little information will resolve the whole issue. You may only need to run a small experiment, or take a measurement to know the answer. Third, the text was confusing and apparently contradictory. In some places, top-down meant authoritarian and not delegating. In other places, top-down meant delegating. Fourth, although sophisticated techniques like scenario building are included, they are misdescribed. The purpose of multiple scenarios is to identify the paths that leave you better off regardless of the environment you encounter. See The Art of the Long View for more on that topic.

Frankly, I was disappointed in this book. It is not up to the usual high DK standard. If you have had no introduction to how to structure decisions, you will definitely be helped by it. There is a shortage of simple decision-making books for business people, so I cannot suggest an alternative.

After you finish this book, I suggest that you think about great business decisions that you have seen made. Can you identify the steps that preceded the decision? When would those steps be relevant in your work?

If you want to read about better decision-making in your personal life, I strongly recommend Smart Choices. That is a remarkably good decision-making book.

May you always place your attention and your thoughts where they will bear the most fruit!

Life on a farm at the edge of the wilderness was filled with hard work and danger, but there was also laughter, adventure, and the love of family and friends. In The Edge of the Wilderness, Lee Updike tells of growing up in northern Saskatchewan in the 1930s and 1940s. From the heartwarming story of his beloved dog, Shorty, to the tale of a terrifying forest fire, Updike chronicles life in the north with insight and gentle humour. Updike_s memoirs of his boyhood are an evocative picture of a way of life that will bring back memories for anyone who grew up there, and make the North come alive for those who didn_t.

4 out of 5 stars Absolute delight to read.......2004-05-28

What an absolute delight to read.
Memories of growing up in the heartland of Canada, the Saskatchewan prairies, fill the pages. I was hooked on the very first chapter, where the author, Lee Updike relates the story of meeting his first dog at age 5. That short story alone has more plot and heart than most full length novels.
Each chapter of the book is from a year in the author's life. He starts at age 5, and is able to document his life through to age 21. Often, as I read the engaging stories, I found that each chapter had a vital life lesson as well. I often found myself hoping that my children would learn the lessons that Lee's parents taught him.
Fisherman's tales of 38 inch pike (pictures included), wise grandmother's (who are really in charge) and encounters with bears (more than one close encounter) are the sort of adventures that draw the reader in. The humour, that is sprinkled lightly, seems to come naturally, in a way that made me comfortable.

The stories reminded me of a play I saw recently called "The Hudson's Bay Boy" which also featured stories from the northern bush.
As a city boy, I have often suspected stories of life in the north are better to read than to actually experience. After reading his book, I think I would probably get an argument about that from Lee.
