Book Description
Technologically driven information overloads corporate leaders, managers, and employees alike, forcing them into a reactive mode with little time for reflection or strategic thinking. When the survey is completed, the teleconference over, and the weekend retreat a distant memory, we go back to our jobs unchanged. We hope that our activities contribute to corporate objectives, but we quickly lose sight of the connection between our work and critical outcomes. It doesn't have to be that way. Denton explains how to combine new interactive Intranet Web-based technology with new managerial software to focus on strategic decision making, effective team management, and the big picture. Along with its companion Web site, www.CIVID3.com, this book provides an innovative solution that integrates and displays your critical information in real time. Condense all the reports received from finance, operations, marketing, and other divisions into a single interactive visual display that's always up to date. Establish two-way communication that allows managers and workers at all levels of the company to participate. This is the first system to graphically display--on a single desktop screen--the status of your key organizational and group performance measures. Combine outcomes and processes. Use subjective as well as objective information. Integrate and display the results in a user-friendly format, in real time. This book's solution allows organizational members to focus on their ultimate purpose and makes it easier to implement strategic or operational decisions.

Book Description
Internet technologies such as extranets and intranets are changing the way organizations operate. CTR's 268-page report looks at how these technologies are enabling new business and communication channels, with a focus on E-commerce.
Intranets Versus Extranets
Intranets are internal TCP/IP-based networks that allow information to be shared within an organization. Extranets expand this technology by selectively making the information available to an organization's business partners, customers, and suppliers. Implementing these technologies offers organizations the ability to effectively serve users both inside and outside of the enterprise. CTR's new Extranets and Intranets: E-commerce Business Strategies for the Future report explores how the Internet and its related technologies enable the creation of an interactive enterprise -- the business paradigm of the future. The report will help IT professionals form an extranet business strategy, conduct an extranet risk and needs analysis, maximize potential revenue from extranets and E-commerce, and use extranets to enhance customer service support.
Extranets: The Key to E-commerce By combining the privacy and security of intranets with the global reach of the Internet, extranets are ideal environments for implementing E-commerce business solutions. Extranets are expected to build business traffic on the Web far above what has been possible with Web sites, search engines, and banner advertising. In fact, many experts believe that extranets will be the platform of choice for more than 80% of business-to-business E-commerce by the year 2001.
Extranets and Intranets: E-commerce Business Strategies for the Future provides valuable information on how organizations can implement extranet technology to conduct E-commerce securely and cost effectively.
The report also evaluates the available E-commerce products and services, explains how E-commerce enhances productivity and competitiveness, and discusses the critical internal and external security issues associated with extranets.
The Future of Networking
Creating an extranet over existing Internet infrastructure brings international companies closer to the idea of operating as a virtual enterprise -- the ultimate in Internet technology.
Extranets and Intranets: E-commerce Business Strategies for the Future includes an in-depth discussion of VPNs, an emerging form of extranet implementation that may become a viable replacement for traditional WANs.
The extranet market is a new and volatile industry; new companies and products are being created every day. While this industry is truly in its formative stages, the report identifies the very latest and most stable products, services, and vendors. A number of case studies of early extranet implementations are also included, providing valuable insight for organizations now embarking on an extranet project.

Book Description
Enterprise portals allow companies to contain and control information overload while exploiting Internet ubiquity and instant access to information resources. CTR's new report discusses how the enterprise portal transforms static, disparate, and scattered intranets into standard, easy-to-use gateways to corporate information resources. The report examines basic portal features, development tools, implementation strategies, and key portal vendors and service providers.
Customer Reviews:
More than a dollar a page?.......2001-04-07
I simply cannot believe the cost of this book. I actually fell for it, and thought, "Wow, with a price like this, it must be the holy grail of portal resources" -- WRONG. For someone fairly familiar with portals and some of the thinking behind them, you'll find the content un-informative and un-inspiring. The writing isn't that great in terms of continuity and clarity, and there isn't enough detail to make the book worthy as a reference.
Price.......2001-01-04
The price of this book is too high. I want to see the contents of the book. If its possible? mail me soon.
A good introductory book on Enterprise portals.......2000-12-01
If you are looking for a good introductory book on corporate/enterprise portals you will find this useful. Introduces the concept and anatomy of a portal, capabilities and features. Provides a brief overview of portal development strategies, development tools and a few interesting case studies (brief!). There are very few publication available (more available by the end of this year) on the emerging concept of corporate portals and consequently this book is a bit overpriced.

This book provides unique insight into the use of intranets and extranets. Corporate intranets and the use of internet technology are relatively recent phenomena and the development of these technologies is now fuelling the most significant changes in corporate infrastructure since the development of the PC. Despite the new and (some would say) as-yet unproven commercial nature of "networked interactive media," major firms ranging from McDonnell-Douglas and Boeing Company to Kaiser Permanente and Price Waterhouse have been using the technology--such as modem-equipped notebook computers in the field, and intranets with day-to-day corporate data--to hone their competitive edge. The Interactive Corporation, by independent consultant Roger Fetterman, uses the experiences of these and other forward-thinking companies to place such technological tools and cyberbusiness savvy into a larger context for those who may glimpse the potential but lack the know-how or confidence to actively proceed.
Book Description
In
The Interactive Corporation, author Roger Fetterman explains the new uses of interactive media through case studies of major corporations like Hewlett-Packard Company and Nortel (Northern Telecom). Demonstrating the successes of networked interactive media in business processes, Fetterman dissolves the hype and ambiguity often associated with new media and answers the important question "What does interactive media mean to me and my business in the new globally competitive marketplace?"
The Interactive Corporation is organized for you to have quick access to the case-study success stories in such business areas as manufacturing and distribution. Leading corporations such as Apple Computer, AlliedSignal, Booz-Allen & Hamilton, Kaiser Permanente, and the The Boeing Company are profiled as they undergo the metamorphosis into truly interactive corporations.
Customer Reviews:
Using technology to drive improvements in the bottom line.......2000-07-27
With this book, Mr. Fetterman has provided an excellent resource for companies looking to leverage technology to improve the bottom line. In my own efforts as an IT manager for a Fortune 50 company, I was looking for a resource that would help justify new technology projects, especially in the use of training. What I found in this book was a new approach that explains how to turn technology projects "inside out" to focus on the business results, and use technology as a supporting tool. Certainly this sounds like common sense, but I've seen many technology projects, especially in the world of multimedia, that don't "get it."
The book explains how "learning by doing" approaches can be much more successful and provide measurable results and high positive ROI over traditional or web-based training. The book provides several excellent examples of business projects that have made good use of multimedia tools. Mr. Fetterman clearly explains the ROI for these efforts.
I beleive that anyone in a position to effect employee productivity and/or justify expenditures on technology projects would benefit form this book. The case studies Mr. Fetterman provides use real-world projects and results that are re-usable in any environment.
Fairly Obvious Conclusions With Interesting ROIs.......1999-01-14
This book is definitely not for Webmasters or anyone familiar with interactive media development except so far as it can serve as an introduction to suit-talk (how to persuade your boss to go all the way).
The first two chapters were interesting but in both case studies the task at hand was fairly obvious and didn't present any real breakthroughs in networking the work environment.
Sorry for the poor review. I was expecting more.
Good book for anyone in business today........1997-09-26
Mr. Fetterman has identified a topic - The Interactive Corporation -- that is of paramount importance to all businesses today. His approach of emphasizing the understanding of "business processes" rather than focusing on the available hardware and software, is one that every business person should seriously consider. (Quote from the book p.256) "Technology is never the beginning.......Begin by understanding where and when technology should be applied to enhance the outcomes of the process and to satisfy corporate goals and objectives." The book includes numerous examples that further illustrate Mr. Fetterman's points using very specific case studies. A good book for CEOs that don't want to wade through techno-babble, but are interested in how they can begin to think about applying the present and developing interactive computer technologies to their own business.

Customer Reviews:
Well below average........2001-01-30
It started out well, with a description of an Intranet and where it all came from. It then degenerates into a poor version of people management book. The title of the book "Intranet Business Strategies" is a misnomer. There are no strategies at all, rather a set of high level, very glib statements about the fact that "you should sell the Intranet internally" (where else would you sell it?) and "the four stages of a team".
However, THE most patronising thing about this book is that it details meeting agendas and schedules - something I would hope even the poorest of managers should be able to work out by themselves.
Perhaps I was hoping for too much in a book called "Intranet Business Strategies", and so the only redeeming feature of this book is that if you know nothing about an Intranet (from basic people management, technology, or perhaps even putting an agenda together for a meeting), then this is the book for you.
My personal recommendation is that you buy a Internet (not Intranet) technology book, understand the basics of that and work with a partner to do the rest. Its cheaper and a lot less frustrating.
Useful, but dated, information.......1998-04-21
I should have noticed that the book had not been updated since 1996 (an ETERNITY in "Web Years"). The information was useful in a general since, but I feel like I paid to much. I should have just picked it up at the library.
Generally disappointed although useful info obtained.......1997-10-14
I found a great deal of the content to be superficial and there was also a significant amount of redundancy throughout the book. A VERY beginner-oriented book. That may may well justify the redundancy and emphasis on (shallow) breadth rather than depth. While I still have not found any other books that address what this book attempts to address, because of the reasons cited above, I can only give it a modest recommendation.
Great book............1997-01-19
Just writing to compliment you on your excellent book - Intranet Business Strategies. I picked up a copy when I was in San Francisco a few weeks ago. Right on the mark....
I'm Managing Director of a Sports Photographic Agency in the UK - total staff 40 including 10 photographers travelling the world with Powerbooks, scanners and modems. The book helped crystalise my ideas - and last week spent half a day making up an Intranet myself from simple HTML pages - demos to Management Team have had brilliant response. The EMPICS IntraWEB opens on Friday ... and I'm sure it's going to be a hit.....
Off to buy your Groupware book on the WWW now!!!!
Good advice on people/process aspect of starting an Intranet.......1997-01-17
This book focusses on the processes to follow in organising
the initial setup of an intranet in a organisation. Hence
its most useful to those people in medium to large firms
with quite formal IT development processes. I used it as
input to writing a feasibility study and found it a valuable
source for the development approach.
Its significant value lies in the fact its one of the few
Intranet "how-to" books which tackles the often-neglected
but very necessary topics of getting your $, winning over
management, organising your team, etc - all the "peopleware"
stuff rather than the in-depth technical programming which
can be easily found in other books.

Book Description
The tax rules of the United States and other countries have intended and unintended effects on the operations of multinational corporations, influencing everything from the formation and allocation of capital to competitive strategies. The growing importance of international business has led economists to reconsider whether current systems of taxing international income are viable in a world of significant capital market integration and global commercial competition.
In an attempt to quantify the effect of tax policy on international investment choices, this volume presents in-depth analyses of the interaction of international tax rules and the investment decisions of multinational enterprises. Ten papers assess the role played by multinational firms and their investment in the U.S. economy and the design of international tax rules for multinational investment; analyze channels through which international tax rules affect the costs of international business activities; and examine ways in which international tax rules affect financing decisions of multinational firms. As a group, the papers demonstrate that international tax rules have significant effects on firms' investment and other financing decisions.

From the author: The United States tax code allows multinational corporations to credit tax payments made to foreign treasuries against domestic tax obligations, up to their United States tax liability on foreign-source income. If foreign tax payments exceed the United States tax liability on foreign-source income, the corporation is said to be in excess credits. We study how the incentives for investment abroad through foreign subsidiaries change as parent corporations transit into and out of excess credits. We also examine how the presence of foreign tax credit carry-forwards affects tax-related investment incentives.
