A few of the articles in this collection, edited by Linda Lau, may be peripheral to your interests - for me these were topics such as 'Applying Technology and TQM to Distance Learning or 'Web-Based Training for the Network Marketing industry', but in general this is an excellent collection of thoughtful and thought-provoking essays around the title themes. I'm confident that everyone involved in this area will find articles with valuable insights both basic and advanced into this rapidly burgeoning field of endeavour. For example, the pedagogical analysis in the first essay 'Web-Based Learning and Instruction: a Constructivist Approach' by Valerie N. Morphew (West Virginian Wesleyan College) is succinct, insightful and offers a basis for explaining to recalcitrant academics how their teaching may actually benefit from incorporating some web-based teaching and learning activities.

As a practitioner of distance learning in a number of forms and formats, I eagerly seek new publications that might help to bring a little more knowledge and science to the art. The title of Lau's book was sufficiently intriguing for my to buy it. Its promise of tying technologies to issues, trends, and opportunities, however remains largely unfilled.
Lau has produced a collection of 16 chapters from 22 authors with broad backgrounds and a divergent set of views on distance learning. Some have addressed the issues to technology application head-on, some not so directly. There is an underlying unevenness of this collection, though they all relate to distance teaching or distance learning. Some chapters are stiff and formal (chapter 1, for example) and others are very loose (2); some are broad and general (2), and others focused and technical (10, 16); some are well documented (5, 9), and others not at all (7); some are profusely illustrated (1, 10), and most not visually supported.
Lau set out to provide a volume to (1)"provide the theoretical foundation of distance learning," that (2) "describes the conceptual aspects of distance learning." and (3) "provides five cases of practical implementation of distance learning." To some degree, all are provided with varying success.
Several chapters were well received by this reader. Of special interest was Adrian's piece on technology and total quality management in developing a learning environment. He does a nice job of presenting and integrating concepts of TQM and distance learning, and setting forth some modifications in the traditional TQM process to apply to the distance environment.
The piece which may come closest to meeting the promise of the title is by Smith and Ransbottom of the United States Military Academy at West Point; it lays out a fairly technical discussion of issues and challenges in meeting the evolving needs and technology related to the use of video in the distance learning world.
Adams and Freeman also offer an interesting short analysis of the use of knowledge management and application of technology in an evolving doctoral program.
There are of gems buried in this volume, though they might be difficult to locate. There are also some good ideas which bear further development; perhaps a project for another day or other researchers.
If you are a value-conscious book buyer and reader, you may want to skip this one. The few really strong and useful chapters might not justify the....price tag.

Very difficult read!.......2007-02-23
This was the text for a graduate level online class. I found it difficult to read and understand because of the large amount of verbiage. It read like an in-depth psychology text that in part was what it is. Teaching Online by Draves was a much better book but it lacked the heavy content. It was more on the common sense approach to online teaching.

Our goal with this book, Research on Enhancing the Interactivity of Online Learning, is to present a juried, scholarly, and accessible review of research, theory, and/or policy on specific issues of interactive online learning for K-16 educators, administrators, and students of online learning. Online learning has become the norm rather than the exception for many of todays students. Instructors are more willing to explore online learning options, students are enrolling in record numbers and colleges, as well as many K-12 institutions, are offering more online courses. As educators, we have more tools than ever to ensure online course success, but just as with a traditional class, we must continue to place emphasis on good pedagogy. To achieve good pedagogy, online teaching takes additional time and a restructuring of course content by the instructor. Student issues include coping strategies, ease of navigation, skills required to complete the course, availability of online resources, feedback from the instructor, and collaborative, interactive learning opportunities. Principles of interactive online learning are new to many, and this book provides a forum for interactive online learning research while also including ideas that enhance both the practical and theoretical aspects of interactive online learning. Many educators and the public are interested in online distance education, in particular Internet-based schooling. The underlying assumption is that this is a new and untested fad in education. This is due in part to a lack of documentation within academia of the early development of online distance education, and, in part, to a shortage of experienced, practicing online schools. On the Internet, one may become confused by the flurry of activity and by the various claims from organizations that they are providing a revolutionary method of instruction--online teaching. Furthermore, many people are unaware of the long and distinguished history of distance education itself that is the root of current day Internet-based schooling. Despite the uncertainty, the public is clearly demanding online distance education. This dissertation helps to resolve these problems. This study fills various needs for the purpose of showing the effective application of online distance education. Educational administrators, teachers, and the public must be assured that online distance teaching is a valid and proven instructional method. Furthermore, administrators and teachers need to know what to expect when planning, operating, and teaching in an online school. Through historical analysis and the presentation of a practicing Internet-based school, this study fills these needs. This dissertation results from fifteen years of independent study and research by the author, combined with professional experience in the field of online distance education, including Internet-based school design and operation. Conclusions result from published studies in distance education; from research conducted in the 1980s concerning publicly available online distance education; and from experience in developing, administrating, and teaching in an international, Internet-based school that has been in continual operation online since 1986. The author concludes that: (1) online distance education has a proven track record; (2) there is continual demand from the global community for Internet-based instruction, as well as a public demand for traditional institutions to accept this nontraditional method of study; and (3) administrators and teachers can economically create and operate an effective Internet-based school that is accessible to and affordable for individual learners using low-cost personal computers.
