Go Get This Book.......2004-04-25
The book has many highlights. I found the idea of the spiritual hunger the author identified throughout her travels to be thought provoking. I enjoyed the beliefs the author shared on our inner voice. Within that section I found parallels to the Appreciative Inquiry philosophy that I became acquainted with this past summer. The author's insights encourage people to be idealistic and strive to achieve their best possible selves while at the same time embracing the reality of where their own strengths lie. The book's time management thoughts are interesting to ponder. Other experts would benefit from considering the outlook on time that is expressed in this book. I agree with the Law of Physics described in the book. I think my favorite quote from the book is this one: "I believe that each of us has the ability to do something significant and great-something that can change the world for the better in some way, large or small." I couldn't agree with this more.
Discover True North.......2004-01-15
This is the best self-improvement book I've read in years. Discover True North really gets to the core of just how powerful our Inner Guidance System is if we will just take time to learn how to tap into it and apply the information we gain. I especially liked the exercises in this book. All were easy to use and implement, step-by-step. I'm recommending this book to all my friends and colleagues and plan to start a Discover True North Expedition and Study Group, as well. This book will help almost anyone to better focus on their personal and professional growth without abandoning others in the process.

"Discover True North" arrived this morning, and I feel like Anne is talking directly to me. The organization is brilliant; every concept is bite-sized and manageable. In some ways, I feel like this is the book Anne Bruce has been waiting to write all along. Her others, which I have read, were all parts of the big picture. "Discover True North" IS the big picture!

Book Description
The book is divided into four main sections. The first shows how dreams mirror the feelings and events of our waking lives, and can help us find solutions to the problems we face. Dalfen describes how to make a "dream map" with feelings, associations and symbols connected to the dream and then apply the map to current life situations. Various approaches, including asking what's missing in the dream story and changing the dream through active imagination, are offered to help find solutions to the particular issue at hand.
Part Two, "Using Your Whole Mind", introduces Gestalt concepts like "top dog" and "underdog," and the idea that all parts of the dream are parts of yourself. The goal is to look past the immediate issues of waking life to a more general sense of oneself. Techniques are offered for discerning the "shadow" in dreams, and reclaiming what Dalfen calls these "underinvested" parts of the self.
Part three takes a longer view, discussing how dreams also reflect events in our past and thus real basic patterns in our lives. The goal is to achieve our full potential, so Dalfen shows how to understand and move beyond habitual patterns of behavior that may be limiting us. Along the way, she discusses recurring dreams and dream series.
Finally Part Four, "Tapping Your Spiritual Strength", explores the universal level of dream experience, introduces such Jungian concepts as "archetypes", the "Mandala" and the "Self", and shows how dreams can connect us with our deepest spiritual nature.

Hidden messages.......2003-07-03
While I think that traditional dream interpretation may be an over-analysis of random brain impulses, certainly certain poignant events during the day can trigger dreams that deliver secret messages to us.
After reading Layne Dalfen's book, I had a nightmare. I was able to discern a warning in the dream, a warning about an issue that was bothering me and that I hadn't dealt with.
Perhaps dreams are sometimes messages and sometimes random, but a really memorable dream is worth examining. If there is a hidden message there, "Dreams Do Come True" can help you find what you might be telling yourself.
Intriguing and Informative.......2003-04-19
I have just finished reading Dreams Do Come True, which I found very intriguing and informative. It gives the readers practical tools to begin the journey of interpreting and understanding the meaning of their dreams. I enjoyed Layne Dalfen's conversational and friendly manner to write about her life experience with dream interpretation. Her book opens a door for the readers to walk out into the field and see the landscape of their own personal human experience, and is an invitation to explore it.
My personal review of Ms Dalfen's book.......2003-04-02
I was struck by how well it is written and
how she laid out the ideas and theories
in such logical sequence. It's easy reading,
but very meaty, at the same time. I enjoyed
her personal anecdotes, as well as other
examples that she gave as demonstrations.
The graphs are very helpful, too. And, even though there is
a lot of serious material in the book, it's not
intimidating or overwhelming, as it could easily
have become.

Another great book by Stoppard!.......2001-09-09
Once again I was not let down by this book, one of Stoppard's latest. From cover to cover this book is full of precious advice that can help you become an enthusiastic parent. The book outlines each phase of your child's development and provides examples of games that you can play to refine his/her natural intelligence. Like all of Stoppard's books, the book's layout is very appealing and simple to follow. What I like in particular are the pages dedicated to each stage of your child's development. She covers each milestone in every aspect from mental development to bladder control. For example, I never knew that potty training was such an incredible act of mental and physical maturity! Even for this she explains all the whys and hows. Once you finish the book, you will understand what it means to "teach" your child, which does not mean just reading,writing and arithmetic.
My only complaint: The book is just a wee bit too short. Then again, maybe that means I was just enjoying it too much.

Some people I have met online say there is really no need for parents to read up on childcare...but I disagree. From the moment a child is born, they are learning. As a parent, you become their teacher, playmate and counselor. From the very start you need...information...information...and more...information.

The homemade fun section looked especially fun with clay, soap bubbles, modeling dough, finger pain, pasta jewelry, vegetable printers, rainy day beach , edible finger pain for babies, baby play dough and more.
The seven sections include:
Parent as Teacher (Skills that encourage learning, rearing helpful children, using discipline positively, communicating successfully with your child)
The Normal Course of Development (Understanding the stages, charting development, mental development, locomotion, sociability, personality, speech)
Factors Affecting Development (health, happiness, parental attitudes, gender, personality, empathy, vulnerability, stress), Simple Tests (taste, hearing, verbal skills, intelligence, observation, perception, vision)
Tools for Learning (providing a stimulating environment, choosing toys, using household items to make toys, home-made fun, the computer, television and video, books and reading, toys for various ages up to 7 years)
The Special Child (The gifted child, under-achieving child, autistic child, child who stutters, child with learning disorder, sight-impaired child, physically disabled child)
Your Child and School (Choosing a nursery, starting Primary School, The changing relationship between you and your child)
The special chapter on Locomotion is very interesting. You can see what a child should be doing by a certain age and what you can do to help. Some of these ideas will come naturally to parents, but others were new ideas I had not yet seen. The handy index makes this book easy to use and you can look up age groups very easily.
I love the colorful illustrations and easy-to-find age groups. Once you read the toy section...you will be heading off to the toy store! How did parents survive without this guide? It is an exhaustive study of what a child should be learning and when. This is a must for new parents and is really a gift for a child to give them a great start in life.
