5 out of 5 stars Finally one that challenges........2003-04-01

I am into the second go around of this book. What fascinates me the most is the fact that Eric doesn't provide the tyical text book solutions. This book makes you think about your situation and helps you in creating innovative solutions.

5 out of 5 stars Loaded with focused advice, worth the read.......2002-08-18

"Achieving success is not an accident; it results from a deliberate process of identifying a compelling purpose, passionately pursuing your vision, preparing for high level outcomes, and performing at your best." Thus we being our journey with a seasoned (two decades) executive coach, professional speaker, and consultant in peak performance. The author is a proven expert in his field-a specialty that has enduring value for individuals, teams, and organizations.

The book--full of advice and counsel that would cost you thousands in a personal consultation--is organized into five strategies. The strategies are Direction, Culture, Empowerment, Coaching, and Renewal. Each strategy is presented as a section of the book, with three or four chapters on each category. Two special features add value to this book: an abundance of relevant quotes throughout the book and cameo contributions from thirteen fairly well-known authors and executives. A bibliography and index round out the book.

Under Direction, Allenbaugh shows readers how to link purpose and passion with performance. Chapters focus on creating a compelling mission and vision, linking into your passion, and implementing your vision. The Culture section describes how to sustain a results-oriented, customer-focused climate-valuable for individuals as well as organizations. The three chapters illuminate various aspects of culture, including the importance of values. The Empowerment section focuses on releasing human potential. There are several insightful chapters on empowering people, honoring the differences among people, and hiring winners by using Attitude, Aptitude, and Alignment as filters. The coaching section addresses building others' success, effective expression and listening skills, and a focus on results. The last portion of the book explores the "3 Rs of Renewal: Release, Reaffirm, and Reinvent." Chapters on individual renewal and organizational renewal contribute useful perspectives.

Easy-to-read book for individuals, managers, business owners, consultants, and those charged with the responsibility (and opportunity) of coaching others to deliberate success. This is a good how-to book, enjoyable and enlightening as a read-through and worthwhile as a reference when you need a re-focus.

5 out of 5 stars A common sense way to accomplish your goals!.......2002-06-11

I have been a fan of Eric Allenbaugh for some time now and was pleased to see that he has put his ideas in print so that everyone can benefit from them. Dr. Allenbaugh's style is down-to-earth and common sense. He makes what so many people shy away from because they don't think they understand it, straightforward. The book is based upon his real life experience as a consultant and coach. If readers will apply Dr. Allenbaugh's advice on vision and mission and combine it with creating a culture of empowered associates, their organizations will reap long term dividends! If the reader does nothing else, the chapters on performance coaching should be taken to heart. The workplace will be so much the better for it! Deliberate Success should be required reading for all CEO's and executives!

5 out of 5 stars Transform your life and business.......2002-06-08

"Achieving success is not an accident: it results from a deliberate process of identifying a compelling purpose, passionately pursuing your vision, preparing for high
level outcomes, and performing at your best." So begins Eric Allenbaugh's latest book, in which he masterfully shows you how to achieve it. He lays out scores of
ideas, peppered with lots of examples and inspirational quotes.

Allenbaugh weaves these together through five success strategies:

Direction - linking purpose and passion with performance.
Culture - sustaining a results-oriented, customer-focused climate.
Empowerment - releasing human potential.
Coaching - creating giants out of other.
Renewal - sustaining your competitive edge.

Underlying these, and woven throughout the examples, are three performance principles:

Being tough on issues and tender on people.
Honoring differences and aligning talent.
Building the bottom line and the human element.

He believes, as I do, that most people want to do their work well and to contribute to the success of their organization. Leaders must harness these individual
desires in a way that serves the collective purpose. Organizations that show this, really hum! They are the industry leaders - the best of the best - even if their CEOs
are not the flashiest ones around.

A primary role of corporate leaders is to shape and reinforce the culture of the enterprise. Allenbaugh provides a useful model of four corporate cultures, as they
are influenced by their attachment to the bottom line and to the human element. Closing my eyes and rifling through my memory bank of the organizations I have
worked in and the scores of companies I have consulted with, I not only could not think of any that did not fit this simple model, but I also understood why some of
them behaved the way they did. That set of insights alone far exceeded the price of the book!

Integration of values into an organization is a long-term endeavor, but vitally important. It's all about alignment - linking of vision with action, paying attention to
both people and profits, walking the talk, learning, growing, and striving always to exceed expectations.

In such organizations, leaders do not "manage" their employees. Rather, they "coach" them to draw out their innate talents and allow them to blossom. From his
years of experience, Allenbaugh describes several different coaching methods, all of which honor and build upon the many ways people learn. Of course, one must
deal with problem performers and even terminate them when their performance and attitudes do not match those of the organization, but it's surprising how few in
number such individuals are when given solid guidance, a supportive culture, and regular coaching.

This is not a fast read. Not because Allenbaugh's prose doesn't draw the reader along easily: it does. Rather, because the shear number of ideas is dense. I
frequently lifted my eyes from the page to ponder what he meant or explore a model he presented and to consider how I might apply it myself. These diversions
were necessary to absorb the full impact of the book.

I have deliberately left out of this review many of the most provocative learning points, so you can discover them for yourself.

The principles in Eric Allenbaugh's book can transform your life, as well as your company, but only if you will it. My advice is simple. Read it. Enjoy it. Learn
from it. Apply its lessons.

Book Description

Tom Fitzmorris is uniquely qualified to write about the food of New Orleans. Born in the Crescent City on Mardi Gras, he'd never left his favorite town for more than three weeks at a time--that is, until Hurricane Katrina struck and Tom and his family were forced to evacuate.

Prior to the disaster, Tom was just putting the finishing touches on his magnum opus: a collection of recipes for the best of New Orleans food gathered and developed over more than 30 years spent reporting eating in the Big Easy. In addition to his weekly restaurant review column, which has been published continuously for 33 years, Tom is best known for his daily 3-hour radio show, "The Food Show," broadcast every afternoon on WSMB.

With New Orleans Food, Tom presents more than 250 great New Orleans recipes designed for the home cook, all steeped in the Creole and Cajun traditions, yet updated to reflect contemporary tastes and ingredients. From small plates (Shrimp Remoulade with Two Sauces) to main courses (Redfish Herbsaint, Root Beer-Glazed Ham) to desserts and drinks (Bananas Foster, Beignets, and Cafe au Lait), these are dishes both elegant and casual, traditional and evolved. Whether you are nostalgic for the taste of New Orleans or simply love good food, New Orleans Food should find a place on your cookbook shelf. Now every Monday, everywhere, can be red-beans-and-rice day.

A portion of the profits from the sale of this book will benefit New Orleans recovery efforts.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!.......2007-06-20

I'm a transplanted Louisianan living in the Northeast (though everyone keeps insisting Maryland is the south)! I recently made a couple of recipes from the book for a New Orleans brunch I hosted for some picky eaters (me being one of them). The food was outstanding and the recipes were fairly easy to understand and prepare. Along with my River Road Recipes cookbooks, this one is quickly becoming a favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Great sampler of New Orleans cuisine.......2007-05-07

This is a wonderful cross-section of the cooking of New Orleans. As a native New Orleanian, I can certainly attest to that. The recipes run the full spectrum of easy to hard and a wonderful history of each dish is provided. I made the easy recipe Heavenly Hash and it reminded me of the candy that was sold at DH Holmes department store. The Texans out here ate it up. I also have prepared a roasted asparagus dish that was EASY and FANTASTIC. Something that needs to be mentioned is that Mr. Fitzmorris is a great everyday chef, he has provided many recipes that he has concocted himself. I really enjoyed his Peanut Butter bread recipe. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in eating GOOD food.

5 out of 5 stars home run.......2007-02-18

Tom Fitzmoris knows his stuff. I've read his columns/blogs/whatever he was writing, since the 1980s. We used to attend (not together) Thursday night wine tastings sponsored by a NOLA shop, and he was always interesting. The only thing I've tried from this book is chicken livers w/ bacon & pepper jelly (p.57). It was just wacky enough to get my attention. And delish! More pages are dog-eared to try once my new kitchen is finished. The book is also a good read for those who like good food. It's like cooking porno.

5 out of 5 stars EASY, SIMPLE, AWESOME.......2007-01-18

THIS WAS MY FIRST ONLINE PURCHASE WITH AMAZON AND IT WAS EASY, SIMPLE AND WAS DELIVERED ON TIME AWESOME. THE BOOK WAS A GREAT GIFT FOR MANY FAMILY MEMBERS WITHIN THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS. THANKS.

5 out of 5 stars good authentic cookbook.......2007-01-11

Tom Fitzmorris definitely knows New Orleans' food. As a native New Orleanian, I appreciate access to his recipes.
And with a portion of the proceeds going to charity, it helps support our city.
Everything I have made so far has been delicious.
The crab cakes and the jambalaya with oysters are my favorites.

Not Left Behind is the story of how Best Friends Animal Society rescued thousands of pets from the storm-ravaged, flooded streets of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The story is told through the images of Best Friends photographer Troy Snow and the words of five Best Friends rescuers—frontline troops representing thousands of volunteers across the country who helped save lives and reunite families.

Troy Snow and the Best Friends Animal Society, Not Left Behind: Rescuing the Pets of New Orleans (Yorkville Press, 2006)

After Katrina hit, thousands upon thousands were forced to flee New Orleans and leave their pets behind. (The prevailing attitude of "we'll only be gone a few days, we'll leave a big bowl of food and some extra water" is reiterated here.) As the military worked on trying to get the city back into habitable condition and rescue any surviving people in the city, the best Friends Animal Society went to work trying to rescue the pets. Troy Snow, the group's photographer, documented the weeks they spent outside New Orleans, boating into the city every day to rescue animals that had been trapped by the flood. These are not happy fluffy bunny animal pictures, folks. If you prefer to think of your pooches as gamboling in the breeze, you might want to avoid this one. But Snow's pictures capture the dogged (pardon the pun) determination and will to live of the animals, and are a fitting tribute to their ability to survive. ****

5 out of 5 stars Captures The Moment (and Piglet as the covergirl!).......2007-02-28

Having worked at the sanctuary in Tylertown, MS where many of these animals were taken after the rescues documented in these extraordinary photographs, this book helps one vividly see what so many of these animals went through after the hurricane and before they arrived at our base camp. More can be said by these photos that captured how these beasts survived the days, weeks and sometimes months after Hurricane Katrina, than any written text can state.

I was also pleased to see that one of the dogs we cared for in the Back 40 in Tylertown whom we named "Piglet" turned out to be the covergirl on this book! She was always so happy to see us when we'd approach her kennel and loved to have suntan lotion rubbed all over her belly -- it is really something to see her story in detail before she came to us at Tylertown. The happy ending is that she was adopted by a family and now has a very happy forever home. :)

5 out of 5 stars Memories.......2007-02-01

Memories of when people come together to help those in need, no matter how many legs they have. It's great to see the results of human compassion.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful & Inspiring.......2007-01-18

This book is amazing! The photographs are enough to bring you to tears, dozens of gorgeous, helpless dogs left stranded to fend for themselves in New Orleans. It's a wonderful narrative of the huge responsibility of rescuing these thousands of animals, and the immense amount of time and effort it took. Very inspiring as tales of generosity, and amazing rescues are told firsthand.
My sister bought the book, and after looking through it once, I had to buy it, and an extra copy to give to the SPCA I was working at. A gorgeous rescue story of deserving dogs.

A mingling of French, Caribbean, African, Spanish, and Native American influences has created the unique culture of New Orleans, from Mardi Gras to the blues. And like the city itself, the cuisine of New Orleans is an exuberant, creative mix, evoking the legacy of three continents. Step into any Cajun or Creole kitchen and you will experience an extraordinary blend of Old World and New.

In The Best of New Orleans, food expert Brooke Dojny has selected the finest dishes of south Louisiana in their most classic guises. From a base of French culinary principles, enlivened by a dash of American ingenuity, come thick spicy gumbos and jambalayas, barbecued and blackened seafood, fiery andouille sausages, superb Sweet Potato Pie and luscious Bananas Foster. Each recipe includes advice on special cooking techniques, and a glossary describes and defines everything from filÉ powder to cayenne, grillade to courtbouillon. Color photographs of the finished dishes and of New Orleans itself capture the joie de vivre of this most irresistible of cuisines.

Having eaten several selections from the Best of New Orleans Cookbook, I knew the receipes were wonderful. Friends had shared the book back and forth for months. I prepared some of the dishes myself and was elated at how simple the food was to prepare and still how delicious it tasted.

Emotions and Words expressed in this book were heartfelt and real.
A great book of rememberance and may we never forget.

5 out of 5 stars Hope and Healing, indeed.......2006-11-10

Gentle and not so gentle reminders of what happened, what's been done, and what needs doing abound in this book. Each person's eyes tells me that they're not doing this as a pretty face, but as a witness. Let us each witness in our own way that what happened in New Orleans, in Florida, in Texas, could happen to us, to anyone we love, and let us witness, too, how we can each, in our own way, support, care for, and aid each other and ourselves in time of need.

5 out of 5 stars Great !!!.......2006-09-25

Some books defy almost all categories. This is definitely one of those books. It is a book of hope, dreams, encouragement and support, for those who lost so much in Hurricane Katrina. This book is the brainchild of Naomi Strasser who, along with photographer friend Paul Alexander, decided to create art that would help in some small way to heal.

Alexander donated his time in photographing celebrities from around the world and from different strata of society. Many others contributed to the work, from the stylists working with the celebrities, to Ryan Priest doing the design and layout. This book was the work of the generosity of many, many people who all championed it and gave of their time and talents to make it happen.

The book is a collection of 71 unique portraits of celebrities, from Johnny Depp, Kelly Hu, and Coldplay, to Viggo Mortensen, Helen Bonham Carter and so many more. Accompanying each portrait is a letter, or encouragement note, to encourage the giving to continue. And it is for those who are far from home now, that they should keep hoping and dreaming of their return. Interspersed with photos of the actual devastation from Katrina, these notes provide hope, encouragement and support.

From Johnny Depp who writes "Help and Keep Helping", to Helen Bonham Carter stating "No amount of rain can drown the music of New Orleans", the words will challenge us to appreciate what we have and to help those less fortunate than we find ourselves to be.

The publisher, Naked Ink Press, is doing their part as well; they have committed to give at least $25,000 US dollars to both the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund and to Habitat for Humanity's Operation Home Delivery. That is $2.50 from each book, sold for a minimum of $25,000 each more depending on sales.

Shawn Ashmore states: "She beat you, but she didn't break you!! Stay strong!!" Picking up this book, either for yourself or for others as a gift, will help to make those words come true. So along with Kevin Bacon we will say "Thinking of U."

It may be trite, but giving this book as a gift, will be a gift that keeps on giving.
