Book Description
Previously available only through free distribution to prisons, this life-changing book is the result of charitable donations from sales of Chicken Soup for the Christian Family Soul and gifts from thousands of individuals. In the spring of 2000, over 100,000 copies of Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul were distributed to prisoners, prison libraries and prison ministries throughout the United States. The hope was that this collection of stories would touch the hearts of prisoners and offer them hope and encouragement, as well as inspire them to transcend the limiting thinking and behaviors of their past. The book was so successful that the co-authors soon found themselves flooded with requests for the book from family members, correctional officers, prison volunteers and others. Because of this huge demand, the decision was made to also release the book to the general public.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-10-17
This is a great book for anyone who is involved with prison ministry. It is full of stories about redemption, forgiveness, and restoration. It's easy to think of inmates as something other than people, formed in the image of God. This book reminds me that prisoners are still people, with hurts and emotions. This book has helpled me to grow in my ministry.
Giving Peace to My Loved One.......2007-05-14
This book has really touched my loved one who is incarcerated. He has really enjoyed it and stated that the stories really give the extra step he needs sometimes.
prisoners soul.......2007-01-30
I sent this book to my son who is incarcerated. He has read over half the book so far. He said the book is great. That it really gives him something to think about. He says the book should be manatory reading for everybody who is in a jail. He thinks the officers in charge of the prisoners should read it also, then maybe the harassment would stop.
Another Winner! .......2007-01-09
Great recreational read! I sent it to my husband! I cried through some stories and smiled through others, just as I have with any other Chicken Soup book!
Extremely Pleased and Thankful!.......2005-10-27
I personally did not read this book, however, I sent it to my 27 year old son who at the time was incarcerated as a result of a mix up with stolen identity (his ID having been stolen and used for criminal activities). It was an extremely difficult & spiritually frustrating time for him! This book made a tremendous difference and impact on his decision to rededicate his life to the Lord and allowing Him (Jesus Christ and God our Father) to "help" my son. My son derived much strength from the life stories of others, such as Chuck Colson, as well as all those that contributed their personal stories, in knowing that God is still on the thrown and has not forgotten those in the judicial prision/jail systems and that they are loved as much as those on the outside. My son said I could not have sent him a greater gift at the time. He also has shared it with many of the inmates who were interested in knowing how much the Lord loves them REGARDLESS of their circumstances, what we have done in life, as well as what we have not done in life to please the Lord. It helped many men and I am very grateful for the book and how quickly it was shipped!! That was a very important aspect as well since my son was in such a state of depression and needed some inspiration, hope, guidance and just plain down to earth stories about life in this difficult world. It helped him to keep on keeping on and having faith that God has a purpose for everything. Life catches us by surprise most of the time, however, it never catches the Lord by surprise. My son needed to know that it rains on the just and the unjust in this world, and it shines on the just and the unjust in this world (taken from the Bible). God is no respector of persons and this book clearly reveals that, but, he is a God of LOVE and he loves all his creations, including those that don't necessarily need a "hand out" but a "hand up" which are usually those incarcerated. Not all in the prison system want a get out of jail free. They just want justice done and this book allowed them, through the stories of those individual lives to know there is a "just God" in this world. Thanks for allowing me this opportunity to share my opinion/review and I hope it will benefit anyone interested in possibly purchasing this book!

In spare, almost biblical prose, Gary Paulsen writes of the horrors of combat in a Civil War novella that puts a powerful, more contemporary spin on Stephen Crane's classic The Red Badge of Courage. Based on the life of a real boy, it tells the story of Charley Goddard, who lies his way into the Union Army at the age of 15. Charley has never been anyplace beyond Winona, Minnesota, and thinks war would be a great adventure. And it is--at first--as his regiment marches off through cheering crowds and pretty, flag-waving girls. But then comes the battle. Charley screams, "Make it stop now!" disbelieving that anything so horrible could be real. Paulsen is unsparing in the details of what actually happens on the battlefield: the living men suddenly blown into pieces, the agony and fear, the noise and terror, the stinking corpses. After many battles, Charley is wounded and sent home an old man before he is 20, his will to live destroyed by combat fatigue--leaving him with a "soldier's heart." Paulsen has received the Margaret A. Edwards Award, the ALAN Award, and several Newbery Honor awards for previous work, but this superb, small masterpiece transcends any of his earlier titles in its remarkable, memorable intensity and power. (Ages 12 to 15) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
In June 1861, when the Civil War began, Charley Goddard enlisted in the First Minnesota Volunteers. He was 15. He didn't know what a "shooting war" meant or what he was fighting for. But he didn't want to miss out on a great adventure.
The "shooting war" turned out to be the horror of combat and the wild luck of survival; how it feels to cross a field toward the enemy, waiting for fire. When he entered the service he was a boy. When he came back he was different; he was only 19, but he was a man with "soldier's heart," later known as "battle fatigue."

A Teenager in the Civil War.......2007-07-03
In 1861 Charley is fifteen years old, living on a farm in Minnesota with his mother and little brother. Everyone has heard the rumor that there is to be a war, with those in the North fighting to stop the Southern rebels from doing damage to the country. No one is quite sure if the war is really going to happen, but Charley is determined to be a part of it if it is.
He convinces his mother that he can handle himself as a soldier and tells her the eleven dollars a month he'll be paid will help her out, and she agrees to let him go. He signs up, lying about his age so they will let him into the army, and begins his training.
At first things are horribly boring. The volunteer military spends much of its time sitting around, doing drills that don't use up their ammunition, and eating really bad food. Charley is considering deserting and simply going home, when finally his unit marches into battle.
Their first battle is a bloodbath--his unit tries to march across an open field while rebel soldiers shoot at them from above. Charley isn't sure what he thought a shooting war would be like, but it was certainly nothing like this. As the war continues and Charley is a part of more and more battles, he learns what war really is, and sees more than his share of the horror of it.
I liked that war wasn't glamorized at all in this book--the narrator spoke of the boredom between battles and the horror of the battles themselves. Nothing was made out to be fun about it. I also liked that Charley was so shocked and couldn't get over what he had seen. He was just a kid when he went into war and it wouldn't have been realistic for him to handle it well.
However, this book was a little too simplistic. It didn't give any of the nuances of Charley's thoughts and feelings, and didn't explore the feelings of anyone except this one main character. I would have liked a bit more depth.
Charley is a freak (i think).......2007-05-29
I definitely recommend this book to all readers. Gary Paulsen does a great job in showing how Charley feels that he will certainly die, and how he changes from a happy farmer to a man that will kill to stay alive. This was one of the greatest historical fiction books that I have ever read because of all the amazing events that actually took place. For example, Charley and another man use dead bodies to build a wall to stop a vicious wind. This book had a lot of surprises, like when Charley is hit and wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. I couldn't wait to turn the page because of all these horrendous and shocking surprises. Because this book is only 102 pages, it makes for an astonishing quick read.
A kid at war........2007-05-20
As already stated, this is a fictionalized story of a young 15 year Minnesota boy who fought in the Civil War. Paulsen takes liberties in relating the short life of Charley Goddard. Goddard participated in many major battles of the Civil War such as Bull Run and Gettysburg. He shows the cost of war on the youths that fight it by relating the term soldier's heart. A soldier's heart becomes hardened by the experience of death in battle. He no longer fears death, viewing it as a way to meet the soldiers who proceeded him in death.
This is a story detailing the cruelity of battle. Battle hardens our soldiers and puts severe strains on their mentail peace. This should be remembered in terms of the cost are soldiers are now going through.

Soldier's Heart
By: Gary Paulsen
Number of pages: 102 Genre: Historical Fiction
Publisher: Laurel Leaf
Do you like a book with action, drama, and a main character with lots of bravery? Then you should pick up the book Soldier's Heart by Gary Paulsen.
Soldier's Heart is based on a true story about a fifteen-year-old boy in Minnesota named Charley Goddard, who lies about his age to join the First Volunteers of Minnesota, to fight in the Civil War.
The main character in the story is a young man, Charley, for his age, Charley is a very mature man and is a very hard worker in every aspect. When Charley is sent off to get prepared for the war, he battles some conflicts. One conflict that he has to battle is that his mother sends him letters saying the she wants him to come back home. Charley feels bad and at first wants to come home, but these thoughts gradually leave.
I like this book for many reasons. One reason was that I like to read about historical fiction, and about the Civil War. Another reason why I like this book was because the main character, "Charley," was only fifteen, and I can relate a lot to the things that he thought and what was going on in his head. The last reason is because the author had a good perspective of what went on during the war.
Gary Paulsen was the author of the book Soldier's Heart. He has also written many other books such as Brian's Winter, Hatchet, The Crossing, The Rifle, and Danger on the Midnight River. Paulsen is able to have a great knowledge because he went to war and fought for our country.
The part in the story that I did not care for was the battlefields. They seemed like they were made up, because of the location. I also did not like how the story had started out. I would have liked to know a little bit more about his family and the backgrounds that Charley lived in.
I would give this book four out of five stars. I would recommend this book to people who like to know historical facts about the Civil War and the battles that were fought in it. Overall, Soldier's Heart is an exciting, historical, and adventurous book that anyone would enjoy to read.
Not what i expected but a good read.......2007-03-09
I didn't realize how short the book was until I already recieved it. It was my fault for not seeing it on the display page but despite how short it is it still provides the reader with an idea of how being on a battlefield during the civil war would be like.

Brian O'Connell's Voices From The Heart, profiles 25 active volunteers from around the United States. The volunteers range in age and all are working on a variety of projects that help make the world a better place. The new book is perfect for a coffee table or holiday gift. I read many profiles on my way back from San Francisco and I couldn't put the book down.

Book Description
In July 2004, the author volunteered to work at a summer camp for Romanian orphans. "These children epitomized the word SURVIVOR. They were loving, energetic, and full of life despite the trauma of their existence. I found them needy, emotionally draining, and champions at overcoming their sorrow and loss. Etched in my heart are the stories of their lives." Journey of the Heart recounts the author's experience and the deeply moving stories of these children. All proceeds from this book will be donated to Children on the Edge.
Customer Reviews:
Journey through Romania .......2007-07-14
I really enjoyed this book. I have been to Romania once on a missions trip a couple of years ago and plan to return next summer. The author described the landscape, culture, and conditions of Romania briefly but pretty well. I was a little disappointed on how she described the landscape negatively, however. Yes, there are a lot of sunflower and corn fields that go on for miles, but I found this landscape to be beautiful and unique to Romania. Also, I drove through parts of Romania that did have a beautiful hill countryside like you see in pictures. I enjoyed how the author described her daily experiences in Romania from working with the children, to living conditions, to relationships with other people on the team. After reading the book, it almost made me want to join the Playscheme team one summer. I read the book in just a couple of days, I wish it was longer! Despite the typos, this is a great book to read if you want to see a glimpse of how Romanian orphans live.
Almost There.......2006-08-24
I've really enjoyed this book because it takes you through the day by day experience of a volunteer in a Romanian orphanage. There isn't anything that she is trying to hide or expose really, it's simply her real life experience over there. I highly reccommend this book for people who want to know more about the orphans in Romania, it's a great way to learn.
Great personal account of Romania.......2006-04-19
This book, actually Linda's published journals from her experiences in Romania, is a life changing read. Linda's insight into the personal lives of these orphan children as well as her own battle with what she could actually give to these children, is both eye opening and challenging. While this is a personal journal not free from errors, it is a must read for all those who are interested at all in the life and pain of an orphan child.
Customer Reviews:
The Chavista Daze.......2007-10-11
I found that this book provided a history of what happened behind Cesar Chavez's leadership. The approach is informative -- not like a "history book" -- and personal. There is wit and charm and the book is an easy read with a lot of information.

Book Description
Touring the four main regions of Thailand, chef Vatcharin Bhumichitr presents 150 authentic recipes, complete with a guide to basic ingredients and 70 color photos of the country and its food.
Customer Reviews:
Despite the errors pointed out..........2002-11-12
...this is still one of the best written journeys into the modern thai kitchen and thai lifestyle. For a cookbook it gives a comprehensive and (mostly) accurate description of the thai regions and gives away some rare recipes that adds to the genuine feeling so often lacking in other thai cookbooks.
A Compendium of Errors.......2000-08-25
Vatch's Thai Cookbook is a compendium of errors. It is amazing that it was ever published and not shredded in reviews. Consider the following - 1. On page page 30 he states that yellow noodles are made from rice flour and eggs. They are made from wheat flour, not rice flour. 2. On page 30 he states that sen yai noodles are referred to as rice sticks. This isn't true. Sen yai noodles are usually fresh and soft - a far cry from a stick. Sen lek noodles are sometimes referred to as rice sticks. 3. On the same page he states that wun sen noodles are made from soy beans. They aren't. They are made from mung beans. 4. Again on page 30 he states that "kanom jin "are only made in large quantities for special occasions." Kanom jin is served at special occasions (its cheap), but it is also sold at virtually every traditional market in Thailand. In the South they are eaten for breakfast each day by vast numbers of people. In Bangkok and other cities they are served at sidewalk stalls and small restaurants. This is a far cry from only being served at special occasions. 5. His statement that kanom jin are made from rice flour is incorrect. They are made from whole grains of rice that have been soaked in water for long periods of time. 6. The statement that the cream sinks to the bottom of the can in canned coconut milk is laughable. Like dairy cream, coconut cream floats to the top of milk. Following Vatch's advice will accomplish the opposite of what is intended. This is pretty basic stuff. Has this man ever been in a kitchen? 7. The statement that bai grapao is a "sweet basi." is incorrect and fails to recognize what is unique about the Thais eating bai grapao. Sweet basil is categorized as Ocimum basilicum; bai grapao is an Ocimum sanctum and quite different in appearance and taste from a sweet basil. The Thais, unlike almost anyone else, eat it in large amounts. 8. The amazing statement on page 78 concerning chilies: "you can always remove the seeds before cooking, this will leave some of the flavour and almost none of the heat." This is absolute nonsense and can lead to unpleasant experiences for readers of the book. The seeds have the least capsaicin (the alkaloid producing the heat) of any part of the chili. The vast majority of the capsaicin in a chili is contained in the placental tissue to which the seeds are attached. Scrape away the pith in the center of the chili and you will remove much of the heat. 9. The statement on page 86 that spices "exotic spices" are rarely used in Thai cooking doesn't make sense. The recipe for red curry paste on page 89 contains a tablespoon of coriander seeds and a teaspoon of cumin seeds. Red curry paste is one of the most frequently used ingredients in Thai cooking. What does he mean? 10. The statement that says rice is low in calories, but capable of supplying nearly 80% of the bodies energy requirements doesn't make sense. How can something be low in calories and provide 80% of our energy requirements?
This kind of cookbook is harmful. It arrives in an attractive package and appears to be written by an expert, but perpetuates myths and inaccuracies. Readers deserve better.
All You Need To Know , Do it right, cook it right........2000-04-05
Thumbs up Vatch. A Great Book. Got to know when I borrowed you from our National Library. Reading through, I must add this spicy book to my present collection of recipe books. Systematic, structured with sharp colourful pictures enabling any novice cook to understand and prepare a meal with ease and confidence.
