Customer Reviews:
Excellent for Getting Certified.......2007-10-01
I bought this book for the sole purpose of passing this test. Well, I passed the test with using the practice tests and spending a lot of time with this book. I didn't buy any type of testing software that a lot of people are getting. I had bought the Sybex version before the Microsoft book, but it had too many mistakes. I also found the other book to cover a lot more than what you need for the certification. I have 9 years of SQL Server experience, but I was pretty worried about taking my first certification test. I think this book is perfect for preparing you for the test. In my opinion, the XML chapter could have been a lot smaller and then they could have expanded on the Mirroring chapter.
Good book.......2007-08-31
I used this book in addition to Tom Carpenter's 70-431 prep book and this is a good book. I feel that the book by Tom Carpenter is a better reference, but there is no question that both books will help prepare your for the exam. If I were you, I would use both books that way you will have the lite and sometimes detached coverage (you might say fact-based) that is in this book and the real-world type coverage that is in the McGraw-Hill book.
Not applicable to the exam as of August '07.......2007-08-26
I installed the evaluation edition of SQL Server that came with the book. Then I went through the book, read every page, did every sample test and more than half of the practice items (many were redundant).
Then I went to take the test and I was shocked. Many, many questions were not covered by the material in this book! I have a very good memory, and read the book while laid off so it only took me two weeks to get through it, so my memory is not the issue here. Microsoft produced a book and represents it's purpose as prep for the test, but it doesn't cover all the material the test does!
Most of the questions were covered so it is possible to pass from this book, but I couldn't.
One particularly galling question on the exam involved a port number that was not in the book, I checked.
Needless to say, I am disappointed. I hope that if I need another certification the kit is more representative of the exam content.
All Technical Books should be written like this.......2007-07-24
I'm only up to page 244 - but I got to say it's a very, very good book. Good size font. Easy to read, it just flows. Theory broken up into short lessons, followed by practice tasks.
I used to freak out at SQL Server 2005 software. Using this book has faded those fears away.
Fast shipping.......2007-07-17
I received the book in new condition with all the training CD's in about 4 days (save more than going buying local)

Customer Reviews:
Maintenance and the Net.......2001-06-09
The Internet already has maintenance and manufacturing directories of installers and vendors; drawings, field modifications, and manuals; e-mail; FAQs; library holdings access; news and user groups; online vendor catalogs; parts information and purchasing; software changes; technical bulletins and help; and used equipment and parts. Joel Levitt goes on to say that any Original Equipment Manufacturer webless in the second millennium will lose a lot of business: finding manufacturers these days means using search engines and visiting the superindustrial and trade magazine sites. There are already tens of thousands of equipment and OEM sites, findable by AltaVista or Excite if you want all the newsgroups and web searched, by spider sites if you need specific equipment model numbers, and by Yahoo if you need a major manufacturing homepage or web site. In fact, the yearly fee for a web site pays for a single full-page ad in a leading maintenance magazine. Also, the government originally set up the Internet for communication and research, which are maintenance and manufacturing concerns, and it is now setting the example with powerful, quality maintenance-oriented Commerce, Defense, Library of Congress and NASA sites. So THE INTERNET GUIDE FOR MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT completes the picture for the author's HANDBOOK OF MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT and MANAGING FACTORY MAINTENANCE and for Terry Wireman's WORLD CLASS MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT.

Writings on the year 2000 (Y2K) problem, or the "millennium bug" as some would have it, have been limited to highly technical analyses of specific problems and their solutions. Very little attention has been paid to how the Y2K problem will affect the lives of average people and everyday systems, even though many prognosticators believe this is where the problem will have the largest impact. In Time Bomb 2000: What the Year 2000 Computer Crisis Means to You, Edward and Jennifer Yourdon do just that by presenting a collection of scenarios ranging from the best we can hope for to the worst cases. Each chapter investigates a different area of computing and the possible effects of this disaster on each. From home PCs to world financial networks, the Yourdons explore a variety of "domino effects" that January 1, 2000, could trigger and the necessary time, effort, and cost to fix the aftermath. The impacts on real life could be anywhere between annoying and catastrophic, and the authors examine each extreme. Each chapter contains "fallback advice," describing the amount of time required to repair these systems. (The authors liken Y2K to a hurricane--it only lasts a day, but requires a year of cleanup.)
Although the Yourdons insist that their overall view is optimistic, it's hard not to feel doomed when reading some of the worst-case scenarios brought on by the year 2000 problem. While Time Bomb 2000 is meant to be an alert, it's not time to start stockpiling canned goods yet, and we can probably still party like it's 1999 right on schedule. However, we should remain extremely mindful of what may await us the next morning.
Book Description
Time Bomb 2000 has become a world-wide bestseller because it doesn't just tell you that there's a Y2K crisis on the way: it spells out how to evaluate your personal risks -- and what you can do about them. As the crunch draws closer, this new edition -- completely updated to reflect Y2K news in every key area of the economy -- is essential reading for everyone who wants to survive Y2K! As over 140,000 readers can already attest, Time Bomb 2000 is the most practical guide to the Y2K crisis. Based on the newest information available, you'll learn what problems are likely to occur, how they will impact individuals and society, and what you can do to prepare. This edition contains updated coverage of every major aspect of society, including communications, power distribution, transportation, finance, travel, medicine, social services, education and employment. You'll find the latest expert assessments of the relative probabilities -- and consequences -- of failure. Best of all, the book presents practical contingency plans and fallback positions in the event the worst happens. Anyone worried about the Y2K problem -- in other words, just about everyone.
Customer Reviews:
How To Be Prepared.......2004-12-29
It is obvious (in hindsight) that nothing much happened on 1/1/2000. Whether it was a result of the problem being overblown or a testament to the incredible amount of work and money spent fixing it is a matter for speculation, though I tend towards the latter explanation.
So why am I still giving this book 4 stars?
This book still holds good advice as to how to be prepared for ANY sort of break down in the infrastructure of our highly specialized society. I believe that there is a non-zero chance of something like this happening in the next decade due to large internal attacks by the enemies of this country.
The book looks at these areas: Jobs, Utilities, Transportation, Banking/Finance, Stock Market, Food, your home PC, News/Information, Health/Medicine, Government, Embedded Systems, Telephone/Mail.
Then it tells you, for each of the topics listed above, what you would have to do to be prepared for shutdowns in these systems for the following time periods: 2 days, 1 month, 1 year, and 10 years.
So despite the fact that Y2K wasn't even a blip on the radar for most of us, this book is still an interesting read and tells you what you need to know to cover yourself from a infrastructure failure of whatever length may seem reasonable to you.
An anti-climax.......2001-06-11
Well written, well organised, but in hindsight - not so well researched. Okay. The Yourdons weren't the only ones caught up in the hype. Many others I had a lot of respect for were caught up as well. For example Robert Theobald, the futurist. I have known the works of Edward Yourdon since I started my batchelor degree - nearly 20 years ago now. After this book, I have to admit that I'll have a big bag of salt next to me when relying on Mr Yourdon's predictions. Hey, at least I did not bunker down and invest in a huge amount of instant food and an arsenal of firearms. But maybe that would have been too American.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice. . ........2000-02-03
Credit to Ed Yourdon for inventing a new literary niche --pointing out a nonexistent crisis, writing a book about it, then writing another book debunking it! He hasn't, at the time of this review, written a book celebrating victory over the fearmongering that he helped to spark, but I'm certain it will be forthcoming.
Yourdon's last shred of credibility evaporated on 01/01/00. Hopefully he made enough off this book to retire. If he didn't, he's going to need to find a new line of work.
I want my money back !.......2000-01-20
This book is a sheer waste of ink and paper. I'll never again buy a book by Ed Yourdon, I loose all my confidence on his technical expertise. What a shame !
What a joke........2000-01-08
This book isn't worth the paper it's printed on. There isn't a choice for no stars. If there were, I'd give it that.

Book Description
In an information-based economy, organizations need to create an environment and a culture that support the reuse of knowledge across the company. This book illustrates what knowledge management is and how it can benefit an organization, as well as how to reduce knowledge isolation and stop the constant seeping of valuable knowledge from an organization. After presenting an overview of the subject, the book drills down into the processes, best practices, and technologies for unlocking an organization's knowledge assets.
Customer Reviews:
The Microsoft Solution for Communities of Practice.......2002-05-14
Conway & Sligar take the idea of a community of practice one step further than Wenger, McDermott and Snyder (In the book "Cultivating communities of Practice"). The central theme is knowledge management, with the problem being how to transfer knowledge from one generation of workers to the next. Conway & Sligar argue that employee loyalty is not common anymore and in fact employee's transfer jobs today more than in the past. The authors write that one way to enable knowledge management is to establish and promote communities. A community of practice is a group of people who share things like information, ideas and personal experience in an area of expertise. The authors see a CoP operating at the workgroup, department or corporate level. An example of a CoP is the Microsoft Database Management community which is focused on the use of Sql server and whose members are scattered around the world. In this community of practice the users of the knowledge give feedback to the producers of the knowledge through a rating system.
Conway & Sligar view knowledge management as a cycle with a number of stages of which a community of practice is one. A person or individual usually creates knowledge. Then the knowledge is shared where a community or group explore the knowledge in greater detail, discuss, argue and analyze. Then the knowledge may undergo refinement in a collaborative corporate environment. Finally the knowledge may enter the public space for mass adoption. In the knowledge management scenario of Conway & Sligar the CoP plays a major role in the second stage. The CoP can be formal or informal and the members share a common sense of purpose. It can be internal or external to the company and be based on a product, technology, role, function, industry or market. The authors believe that a community profile document should be created with items such as: a vision statement, a mission statement, roles & responsibilities and objectives for the community. In a CoP a number of community roles need to be filled such as: a community leader, subject matter expert, special interest group leader, the expert, community member, guest and launch team. The authors believe that the community must be compelling and fully engage members, where all members are fully rewarded for their contributions.
The authors both work for Microsoft Consulting Services in the area of knowledge management. They base their ideas of communities of practice firmly around the Microsoft Sharepoint collaboration software solution (which runs as an Active Server Pages application in Windows 2000 Internet Information Server). This software includes threaded discussion forums as part of its functionality for knowledge management. In fact communities of practice should be implemented with the discussion board functionality of the software. Discussion board software forms the core feature of many web sites using virtual community. Therefore, the authors end up blurring the boundaries between a community of practice and a virtual community.
A KM Breakthrough.......2002-04-13
Unlocking Knowledge Assets is not only a great overview of the much-misunderstood KM field; it is truly a breakthrough management science. With great brevity and clarity the authors outline how knowledge management's effectiveness can be accurately measured and linked to the goals of your business. If managers can pinpoint what knowledge worker activities are producing results, then those activities can be encouraged and rewarded. Taking the maxim "you can't manage what you can't measure" to heart, this book provides a first-of-its-kind paradigm that should shed new light on a firm's most valuable and mysterious resource: knowledge.
David H. Brett, CEO and Founder, Knexa.com
Excellent for the business executive.......2002-03-14
This book is written for the business executive to help them make the decision to implement a KM system in their organization. Even though the book is written by Microsoft Consultants it is not a sales pitch for Microsft technologies. The expertise these authors bring to this topic makes the book an excellent read for anyone planning to implement KM. They begin by discuss the importance of making sure the culture is represented within the system in order to support adoption and constant growth of the knowledge assets contained in the system.
