The Second Creation deals with some of the most important issues confronting us today: genetic engineering and cloning, and the control that science has over the process of life. Written by the noted science author Colin Tudge, the book is based on interviews with Ian Wilmut and Keith Campbell, the scientists who cloned Dolly the sheep. Its aim is to explain the story of how and why they came to cloning sheep and the implications for the future, from curing diseases to human cloning. But that's not easy to convey simply, according to Ian Wilmut:

The full story is, however, inescapably complicated. The science and technology of cloning, at least by our method, takes us into some of the most esoteric reaches of biology...

Their subject is complex and requires careful reading, but the reward is worth the effort. Inevitably, the issue of human cloning is looked at in some detail, and all three of the authors find the idea repugnant and do not believe society will accept it:

The pressures for human cloning are powerful; but, although it seems likely that somebody, at some time, will attempt it, we need not assume that it will ever become a common or significant feature of human life.

The book contains a comprehensive glossary to explain the scientific terms and abbreviations. Colin Tudge is the author of several books including The Engineer in the Garden, short-listed for the British Science Book Award. --Carina Trimingham, Amazon.co.uk

Book Description

The cloning of Dolly in 1996 from the cell of an adult sheep was a pivotal moment in history. For the first time, a team of scientists, led by Ian Wilmut and Keith Campbell, was able to clone a whole mammal using a single cultured adult body cell, a breakthrough that revolutionized three technologies--genetic engineering, genomics, and cloning by nuclear transfer from adult cells--and brought science ever closer to the possibility of human cloning. In this definitive account, the scientists who accomplished this stunning feat explain their hypotheses and experiments, their conclusions, and the ethical and scientific ramifications of their work. Written with award-winning science writer Colin Tudge, The Second Creation is a landmark work that details the most exciting and challenging scientific discovery of the twentieth century.

Wonderful and interesting. Are scientists able to isolate the cells right before they undergo meiosis and use those cells for somatic nuclear transfer? For example, take a liver cell and perform a somatic nuclear transfer with a precursor cell (of the eggs)--the precursor cell undergoes meiosis to produce the ovum. It would give hope to infertile people and avoid the controversy of cloning.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2001-08-07

Science is breeding new technologies at an unprecedented rate, and with the birth of each advancement comes a new generation of ethical concerns. Few developments have rattled the world's moral cage more than cloning, and it behooves any professional to have a working knowledge of the foundations of the current debates surrounding the genetic sciences. Of course, understanding how Dolly the Lamb was cloned from an adult sheep is probably beyond the grasp of most readers. But authors Ian Wilmut, Keith Campbell (the two leaders of the cloning team) and Colin Tudge (an experienced science writer) examine every inch of scientific ground the project covered. While many details are presented densely, this clearly written, first-person account of a momentous, history-making event is fascinating, particularly for readers of a scientific bent. We [...] recommend this book to any and all readers as a basic education in a field that has the potential to impact all of our businesses and our lives. Hello, Dolly.

2 out of 5 stars silly, patronizing, hardly qualifies as journalism..........2000-07-21

I was eager to see what Wilmut thought about cloning after reading his excellent essay in the best-selling anthology The Human Cloning Debate. But I was stunned when I read this book. Unlike the other work, this book comes across as silly, even patronizing. The book reads as though Wilmut is attempting to capitalize on Dolly, rather than as a thoughtful reflection on veterinary biology or genetics or human families. It is also very boring, even with the ghostwriter! Save your money; this expensive vehicle is not the best or the most interesting of the crop of cloned cloning books.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Cloning.......2000-06-24

Ian Wilmut and Keith Cambell are the creators of Dolly the cloned sheep. They are also two of the three authors of this book. The book is all about how the historic event of cloning a mammal for the first time in history came about. It is wonderful reading and contains some great scientific insights. The only problem is that these two scientists have not embraced human cloning and all the good that it can do. It seems as if they stepped out of scientific mode and were forced to be against human cloning to keep their funding, placate their religions, and not become pariahs to the religious right. Great book. I highly recommend it for the fascinating story of cloning.

This a book that talks about cloning (though I think you knew that already), what I did not liked is that this book is plagued with descriptions about the physical appearance of the authors, their families, the places they come from, their personalities, etc. Don't get me wrong, I admire this couple of investigators, what they did is a landmark in biological science, but I expected more science and less digresion. The scientific part of the book is interesting, you don't need to be an expert to understand the principles of cloning in this writing style. The rest of it is bearable. I recommend this book even though I disliked so many non relevant facts.

This is a must for the articulate and must be read carefully, consistently or the extensiveness and expertise will cause one to re-read excerpts. Forwarning: create word document to capture the depth of the content to enable review of materials. The book is precise and very well organized. Only one area of weakness in material is more detail regarding corporate minutes. Unless you have been a corporate secretary and done this kind of work you won't grasp the critical issues in doing acquisitions and questions to seller. I do M&A-well worth the money.

When purchasing a company you need to know what to look for and where to look for it and what it is you are looking at when you get the information you asked for.

If you are selling your company you need to know what someone SHOULD be looking for, where they will look for it, and the kinds of conclusions they should be drawing from what they are seeing.

This book is an incredibly valuable resource in this process. It is organized very logically and is a series of questions and answers so you can hop around to the information you need for the moment. However, it is also written in such a lively manner that it is easy to read from beginning to end. I happen to be fascinated by this topic and think this is an incredibly helpful handbook.

I think that the way you conduct due dilligence says a lot about your chances of success with an acquisition. And I also think that if someone is trying to buy you, you can tell a lot about them by what they want to know and the conclusions they draw from what they see. In either case it behooves you to invest time and a couple of books in a book like this. Well, in this book.

Alexandra Reed LaJoux has done it again. Her most recent book on "The Art of M&A Due Diligence" is a valuable tool for the seasoned practitioner as well as the neophyte. She and her co-author Charles Elson effectively combine the big picture with relevant detail so that the reader has a clear understanding of not only the critical concepts but of the process of "due diligence." I found the chapter dedicated to "transactional due diligence" particularly useful. I would recommend this book to anyone serious about transactional work, either as a lawyer, investment banker, or businessperson.

Book Description

This book updates and advances the theory of expected utility as applied to risk analysis and financial decision making. Von Neumann and Morgenstern pioneered the use of expected utility theory in the 1940s, but most utility functions used in financial management are still relatively simplistic and assume a mean-variance world. Taking into account recent advances in the economics of risk and uncertainty, this book focuses on richer applications of expected utility in finance, macroeconomics, and environmental economics.

The book covers these topics: expected utility theory and related concepts; the standard portfolio problem of choice under uncertainty involving two different assets; P the basic hyperplane separation theorem and log-supermodular functions as technical tools for solving various decision-making problems under uncertainty; s choice involving multiple risks; the Arrow-Debreu portfolio problem; consumption and saving; the equilibrium price of risk and time in an Arrow-Debreu economy; and dynamic models of decision making when a flow of information on future risks is expected over time. The book is appropriate for both students and professionals. Concepts are presented intuitively as well as formally, and the theory is balanced by empirical considerations. Each chapter concludes with a problem set.

This book presents an excellent summary of the toolbox that students and professionals must manage in order to understand the numberless amount of modern contributions on asset pricing. All recent advances in the use of risk and uncertainty are presented with simple and direct language, and without useless mathematical sophistication. A needed help for asset pricing courses intended to graduate students.

Gollier has written a book that not many others could have written. It is VERY complete, it is full of deep insights, and, for me, it is a pleasure to read. Don't be mistaken: this is a research book, not a textbook. But for those of us doing research in decision theory, general equilibrium, finance, or macroeconomics, it is simply a must. How could you afford NOT to buy it?

    Book Description

The continuation of global poverty is inextricably entwined with the fundamental philosophy of the market economy. It is driven by the individual's neverending desire for "profit", leading to a critically imbalanced distribution of resources. As an entrepreneurial initiative, this book advocates a shift in the responsibility for relief of poverty away from the government to the private sector, and in particular to corporate entities. The concept of the "residual" is used as the cornerstone of business operations and wealth distribution. Corporate decision-makers, while making proprietary decisions for resources allocation, must assume stewardship responsibility and be accountable not just to financial investors but to all contributors of the corporate entity.

          Acclaim for first edition:

`The author succeeds in bringing together many interesting real-life applications of CBA in various areas (including among others health, environment and transportation). The examples are well chosen to illustrate the basic issues and show clearly the crucial importance of theoretical and methodological assumptions. Moreover, they are presented in an accessible and attractive way. For those who know already the principles of CBA, these applications are stimulating and enjoyable reading.'
          - Erik Schokkaert, Tijdschrift voor Economie en Management

This fully updated new edition continues in the vein of its predecessor by viewing cost-benefit analysis as applied welfare economics, while at the same time building on the earlier framework by extending the theory and providing further applications in each chapter.

New for this edition are analyses of theory related applications in mental health, condom social marketing programs, female primary education as a means of preventing HIV/AIDS and the pricing of natural gas. Presented in an integrated manner, the theoretical concepts are constructed around the main building blocks of CBA, such as shadow pricing, distribution weights, the social discount rate and the marginal cost of public funds.

This edition will cement the book's place as a major and accessible text in the field and will be of great interest to graduate and undergraduate students of welfare economics and microeconomic theory, as well as government economists involved with any area of public policy.

Can corporate social awareness be translated into positive and predictable financial outcomes? Yes. Riahi-Belkaoui covers the two main components of corporate social awareness--corporate reputation or organizational effectiveness and socio-economic accounting information--and ties them directly to what happens on the corporation's bottom line. Presenting a thorough investigation of the models and results of the connection between desirable corporate behavior and economic performance, he shows not only that the outcomes are positive but that they are also predictable. A provocative and assuring study, this is intended for corporate management concerned with finance and accounting, and their colleagues with similar interests in the academic community.

                  Book Description

The first edition of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Initiative comprises of greenhouse gas accounting and reporting standards, and practical guidance for business and other types of organizations. It addresses the six greenhouse gases covered by the Kyoto Protocol. The standards and guidance will help companies and others develop a credible greenhouse gas inventory underpinned by accounting and reporting principles based on established financial accounting practices, serve as an internal management tool, and provide information that complements other local and global climate initiatives and schemes. The protocol was developed by a unique multi-stakeholder partnership of over 350 businesses, NGOs, and governments led by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.
