I rated MST two stars because the prose reminds me of Kung Fu's Shaolin Monk, Kwai Chang Caine. Unlike John Murphy, Alexander Elder and Steve Nison, Mr. Farley fails to clearly communicate his ideas and the writing is verbose. I read the entire book, learned a few new things but it was like panning for gold.

I felt the need to post a review because it seems to me most reviewers think the only options for rating a product are 1 a 5. To preface: I'm a college student who has recently been looking into technical analysis. This book was recommended to me by a friend. I don't claim to be an expert in trading.
First of all, I have to agree, this book is incredibly hard to read. The author comes off as an over-verbose pretentious individual.
Difficulty aside, this book gives you an incredible wealth of information on trading. I couldn't disagree more with a past reviewer who claims that this book is marketed as a "Get rich quick". I feel this book is quite the opposite. It gives you a very practical overview of many of the popular indicators and TA techniques(as opposed to say, the introductory explanation as offered in Murphy's) as well as lots of general tips to aspiring swing traders. It then goes on to outline some very thoroughly defined trading systems and all the knowledge needed to execute them.
This book is long and to be honest, painfully boring sometimes. However if you are looking to increase your knowledge of trading, I feel this is a book that should definitely be considered. Look elsewhere if you want a quick weekend read.

There are some good principles in the book, but its way to easy to get lost in all of the repetition and blandness. The section on fibonocci retracements was useful and seems to work well for me in practice; however, I didn't get much else from the book.

I had read a lot of reviews over this book before deciding to purchase it. The reviews--more than any trading book out there, at the time--pretty much had the vote split between people who absolutely hated it and those who absolutely loved it. The deciding factor that lead to my purchase was the author (a professional trader of many years) of another book who spoke highly of "The Master Swing Trader"'s author, and the work he had done in writing this piece.
This is not a fluff book to hook you into trading. This book is geared towards those few individuals out there who wish to make trading a profession, rather than a passing fancy. I read a large number of those fluff books during my decision to become a professional day trader. I wish I had picked up this book first, because it goes into all the techniques I now use today in order to be successful. Not only does this book discuss the various trading techniques and their set-ups, along with all so important exit strategies, but more importantly it discusses why price moves in certain directions, why it jumps forth, why it breaks down--basically, it offers rare insights into the psyche of the trading crowd that is the market (all those traders out there who are competing against you).
The writing style has been berated as too 'text-book' in presentation, but I beg to differ. It flows with an elegant prose that distinguishes the author not only as a true trader, but also as a true writer who can hook those who wish to relate to the generously offered insights. Only those who have been through the grueling battles in actual trading scenarios and who hunger to know why things went right or why they went wrong, will appreciate this work and set it up on their bookshelf next to the other trading classics.
If you are used to simplistic writing such as can be found on any dimestore bookshelf, with the likes of Stephen King, this elevated work may certainly be beyond your grasp. If, however, you can digest proper grammer and get past poetic prose, this book will open a window rarely seen before. It is probably one of the best all around trading books ever written.
Good luck to those aspiring traders who hunger to understand market sentiment.

What a horrible book. The writing style of the author is horrendous! Impossible to follow or even comprehend what he is trying to teach. All the information in this book is readily available online. Save your money and buy "Mastering the trade" by Scott instead.

Excellent Daytrading Book (Volume 2).......2007-03-18
It is difficult to find a good daytrading book that gives you a tremendous amount of chart examples and notes to help you find a good set-up on a 5 minute intraday chart. Most of the other stockmarket books out there give you the same old stuff that you have read many times before.
Barry's style of daytrading you will find is straight forward using price patterns,set-ups, sell-offs, gaps, discussion of the price bar for the more experienced intraday traders. Looking for tradeable daily setups from congestion areas.
If you don't understand the first time go through it several times until you do fully understand the information presented.
This is not a book that cover's stock indicators that most of the rookie trader's use to trade stocks. You can find lots of those kind of books in your local bookstore.

This book is great for anyone who wants to seriously trade stocks for a living, and it covers many crucial topics for persons just starting to make money day trading.
Once you are in the trade, Rudd does not just leave you to fend for yourself.
This book is about as close as you can get to understand how to make day trading successful.
I found this to be an honest and detailed look into the mind and procedures of a trader.
All in all, I have to give a strong recommendation to this book. It is well worth the money.
Solid, but hardly spectacular.......2003-04-17
Reading all the reviews below, I can see the view of both the positive and negatives. The publisher is Traders Press, who are known for their over priced books, huge pages, fonts and often minimal content. This is no exception. There are 200+ pages in this book, but half of the pages are just charts that may take 3 seconds to look over before moving on. I finished reading this book in about an hour with little effort.
I do like Rudd's style, he gets straight to the point with his pattern setups with very simple (sometimes vague) explanations. He uses typical TA that we already know - support, resistance, price targets, open, close, high, gap resistances. Nothing particularly special for an informed trader. I can't say this is a bad book, the price is reasonable compared to a Joe Ross book and a trader may pick up a thing or two that he isn't aware of.

Although the book does contains some useful information, it could have easily been sold as a daytraders handbook of some kind for much less. 1/2 of the book is illustrations (overkill in my opinion). Later parts of the book simply repeat information presented in earlier parts of the book.
This could have easily been a 75 page handbook for [less money]. In my opinion, the [book is] severly overpriced. Because of this, I give a 2 star rating.

Great book with rare insight.......2006-04-20
The chapter on level 2 alone is worth the price of the book. Yes the markets have changed and will continue to change, but you can always apply the general principles. Example: accumulation is accumulation regardless of what the market conditions are. Chris points out how to spot accumulation on level 2 and T&S, and if you grasp the idea, you should be able to spot them in any market with the tools available.

There is much useful material, along with a thoughtful approach to creating a daytrading discipline, in this book. I don't fully agree with (and wouldn't expect to) all of Lewis' statements, and, as you might expect, given the changes in the trading environment over the last couple of years, many of his methods and observations are arguably already out of date, but others still apply, and his overall philosophy, perspective, and attitude are probably more important, in my opinion, than the particulars of his personal approach as practiced in and around late 2000. The text includes numerous clear, concrete, and detailed examples, though you may have to look past an L2 screen with a stack of QCOM buyers at 343 13/16 (I just never get over mania-market prices) to receive the message.

All in all, a rather decent book.......2000-11-16
The good points: first, the book's emphasis is on trading the open, offering a straight forward strategy for playing momentum type gaps. Second, the book has a thorough review of TA basics filtered by practical and experienced advice. Third, there were several odds and ends (like NASDAQ having two data feeds, do the S&P Futures really say anything, etc) that were indeed helpful.
The not so good points: while, its all there, you have to really read the text carefully to extract what you need - meaning it could have been better organized for flow in some chapters. Second, a week in the life "Trading Week" would have been more satisfying if it had been two weeks long and not one (the author might disagree).
All in all, a rather decent book that I value for its level-headed, lets stick to the basics, here's what really works kind of thinking.

It was early in the 1990s, that Toby Crabel made his most significant strides as a researcher and trader. From 1991 to mid-1993, while working in research and trading under Victor Niederhoffer at Niederhoffer Investments in New York, Toby became convinced of the need to systematize his trading and risk control methods. Toby found this approach to be a better psychological fit for him, and also a cure for the high volatility that had accompanied discretionary trading. It also allowed him to focus more rigorously on research. In January 1992, he began a strict application of systematic, short-term trading in futures markets.
Toby Crabel left Niederhoffer Investments in April 1993. At this point, Toby was confident that he had conceived of an approach to trading and risk management on which he could build a world-class CTA. Starting in 1993, Toby invested all available resources in building the infrastructure necessary to implement his systems. During this time, he created unique research and signal generation systems that are still a central part of research and operations today. Since 1993, the Crabel team has expanded from 2 to over 60 people worldwide. Today Tobys trading advisory business, Crabel Capital Management, LLC, is based in Milwaukee, WI. Through this firm and other Crabel affiliates, Crabel currently manages over $2.5B including notional assets.
