Book Description

This lively book reveals a little known culture that predates the Pilgrims and has remained true to the earliest version of the American Dream: an egalitarian, self-reliant republic. The self-sufficient lobstermen of the Maine coast are models of environmental prudence: at a time when the fishing industry is in crisis, they have conserved the bounty of their waters, even as the once-humble lobster has become a coveted delicacy. How denizens of the coast achieved this balance, even as they withstood assaults from everyone from French raiders to rapacious land speculators, makes for a “stellar informal history ... a primer for conservation and the effects of bad politics” (The Kingston Observer).

5 out of 5 stars Maine History.......2007-04-12

This book is a page turner I couldn't put down. Beautifully written, it does a thorough job of concisely telling the history of coastal Maine and, by so doing, gives us a start on the history of New England. It takes us from the earliest settlers to today, and even if one has, as I have, lived on the coast of Maine for close to 40 years, one can learn from the book. Put it together with "Islanders" by Virginia Thorndike, and you have a picture of one of the last best places on earth. Please don't let these books persuade you to move here!

5 out of 5 stars The Lobster Coast...........2006-09-11

is a all encompassing look at mid coast Maine, both present day and historically. It took me back to High School US history and made the French Indian wars come alive. Hear about modern day lobster pirates from of all places, "Friendship" invading a small island's lobster fields.

Look ahead for what is in store for a severely depleted fishery
then chuckle when a hidden camera reveals the secret life of lobster and captor. Great read, it belongs in your Maine libary.

4 out of 5 stars More Than Meets the Eye.......2006-09-08

After finishing the first short section, my first thought was that the book was a bit of a lightweight -- at best, a paperback to read while flying across the Atlantic. But when I got to the second section which filled in many of the historical gaps -- particularly the "why's" -- from Elizabethan England to the Pilgrims to the modern era, I realized how interesting this book really was. Anyone who enjoys travelogues will enjoy this book; perhaps you need to have visited Maine at least once or have some connection to the state, but if you do read it, you will learn much more about the history of the western world than the title suggests.

4 out of 5 stars Finest Kind!.......2006-02-17

Colin Woodard skillfully paints a picture of Maine both past and present, identifying the nuances that make the culture so unique, while detailing the insecurities that plague Downeasters. Through the course of the book, Woodard traces the troubled evolution of Maine as both a political and social state, detailing the hardships that plagued early settlers in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries and the economic disparity that have shaped the modern culture.

As a historian, Woodard is somewhat of a novice. He has difficulty weaving events together into a narrative that can be easily followed and tends to make broad leaps without establishing a proper foundation.

This shortcoming is more than compensated for by his obvious passion and interest in the subject matter. Woodard clearly understands the psyche of Maine. He recognizes that a Mainer is not an individual dwelling in a geographic territory bordered by Canada and NH, but rather somebody possessing a particular mindset... somebody that strives for the simpler things, while struggling to deal with the challenges of modern economics.

For anybody that loves Maine and the Downeast, this is a fabulous read and well worth the time. The book is definitely part history part sociology. But it's worth a look!

5 out of 5 stars The Maine Coast like you've never experienced it before.......2005-08-12

A book both entertaining and educational - ranging from lobster fishing to the history of Maine - which puts 'Vactionland' in a whole new light.

While the history is clearly presented from a Maine-centric perspective, putting some otherwise well-regarded historical figures (like Revolutionay War General Henry Knox, famous for hauling the captured cannons of Ticonderoga overland to Boston in the middle of winter) in far from flattering light, it is a perspective that isn't often - if ever - told. And it's these stories which put a far more complex backstory into what so many (myself included) have long regarded as a summer vacation sanctuary, but not much more.

This book is a great summer read, a great fall read - whatever season, enjoy it with some lobster, and gain a new appreciation for 'Downeast' and all the way down the Maine coast.

Book Description

[body]

The greed of mining and oil companies is driving Native peoples to the brink of extinction. Acclaimed scholar of Native and environmental issues Al Gedicks describes how a multiracial, transnational movement is fighting back.

>

In Mexico, the Philippines, Colombia, Ecuador, Nigeria, West Papua, Canada, and the United States, indigenous peoples are working with environmentalists and anti-racists to stop corporate and state takeovers of their traditional lands and waters. Al Gedicks looks at these and other regions and documents how mining and oil companies subvert local opposition and rely on military forces to carry out their exploitation.

Global activists will find Resource Rebels an essential key to effective campaigns. As native communities have come under assault, there has been an extraordinary growth of native organizations asserting their rights on the international stage. Gedicks documents how a growing transnational environmental and human rights network has come to the assistance of native communities under siege by the international oil and mining industries.

Praise for The New Resource Wars :

"Useful to all people concerned with sustaining life on this planet."-The Circle

"Clear and compassionate."–The Progressive

"A definitive documentation."-Higher Values: The Minewatch Bulletin

"Exhaustive."-Toward Freedom

Al Gedicks is a professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and an environmental and native rights activist. He has written extensively about the impact of mining on native populations and is the author of the critically acclaimed classic, The New Resource Wars: Native and Environmental Struggles Against Multinational Corporations (ISBN 0-89608-462-0, South End Press 1993).

5 out of 5 stars Gedicks has soul........2007-07-07

It takes a lot of strength to pour over the sort of bad news that Gedicks brings us in "Resource Rebels." It's an emotional challenge to witness the ways in which the Indian Wars continue, how few people are aware of this indigenous holocaust, and how hopeless people can feel in the face of its inertia. The inhumanity shown by the executives of these extractive industries and the military and media hit men that serve them - it's all rather sickening.
The soul that Gedicks exhibits is also evident in these "Resource Rebels" who show tremendous courage to confront these impossible odds.
There are other important books that look into the attempts to slow the progress of this destructive leviathan the planners of our hi-tech militarist society have created Paradigm Wars: Indigenous Peoples' Resistance to Globalization. The interests of these transnational conglomerates are not human interests. And when the U'Wa in Colombia, the Shuar in Ecuador, the Komoro of West Papua, and the Chippewa of Wisconsin challenge their oppression and the destruction of the earth - they are defending all of humanity and future generations.

In the chapter on "The Military, Trade and Strategies for Sustainability" Gedicks notes how demanding our military is of minerals and oil resources. He cites a study that estimates "that military consumption accounts for 10 to 20% of U.S. mineral consumption." And in opposition to the desires of the general public, we continue to construct newer fleets of fighter planes and aircraft carriers all the time. Budgets are always tight for new libraries, health care, university educations, etc.; but there's always money for the warfare state. Why We Fight
I've purchased a couple copies of this book, because the author and publishers like "South End" are so deserving of support.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Case Studies but more was expected.......2002-04-02

Following his earlier book "The New Resource Wars", Al Gedicks eloquently presents numerous negative case studies regarding exploitative mining. In this book, I was hoping there would be more direct social science analysis as well. However, there is simply more descriptive and investigative material about pernicious cases of exploitation. Instead, it would have been useful to also consider some cases of corporate resposibility, or cases where Native communities have in fact chosen to go forward with mining and have had positive experiences -- indeed cases of mines such as the Raglan project in Quebec, The Red Dog Mine in Alaska, Argyle in Australia, mining in Botswana and Ghana or oil in Brunei might also have provided an interesting comparison. Nevertheless, the book certainly has some good expository material on some of the "bad boy" companies. It is important to consider that there might also be some better players in the mix -- which the activist perspective in this book does not want to even acknowledge.

                    Book Description

Value Based Management brushes aside the often-confusing amalgam of quick-fix management potions, and gives you tested tips and strategies designed to turn your company into an equity-enhancing machine. This long-awaited book describes how, once you have seen and tried the hundreds of different management theories that abound today, one goal will always remain: Enhancing Shareholder Value. Companies that focus on creating and building value become focused, goal-oriented, and successful at building the powerful business machines that are required in todayÕs give-no-quarter competitive environment. Performance measurement consultant James A. KnightÕs eye-opening book provides convincing proof that strategies designed to maximize shareholder value can benefit everyone involved. With its clear-cut diagrams, explanations, and case histories, Value Based Management demonstrates how every decision your management team makes can consistently create shareholder value. Its comprehensive benefits include a clear definition of the nature of corporate value, and how the act of enhancing it can create positive reverberations throughout the entire company; examples of companies that have successfully managed for value and how they have done it, alongside examples of companies that failed to manage for value and how you can avoid their pitfalls; and explanations of how Value Added Management creates the optimal balance between short and long term decisions, and helps your managers balance the trade offs between improved levels of profit and greater growth. Like so many journeys, the toughest step when focusing your company on Value Management is the first step. Take that first step today! Read Value Based Management, focus on the strategy and business questions it raises, then think about how its solutions can be tailored to fit your company. Once you have begun to implement Value Based Management your shareholders, along with your customers and employees, will recognize and reap the profitable benefits of a value based corporate mindset.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction with detailed solutions.......1999-04-27

I've watched the words "Shareholder Value" creep into our business vocabulary over the past decade or so, and I've heard many explanations of how to optimize it. Unfortunately, there about as many definitions and techniques for measuring and managing it as there are books on the subject. I've read many of these other texts and worked with the other consultants Mr. Knight mentions in his book. But none of them have approached the precision and clarity of this book. Mr Knight starts with why management should understand the shareholder's needs and the proper methods for addressing those needs, then he takes the reader logically through all the steps (including the subtle nuances) of implementing such a program. There is no more comprehensive nor better written book on this subject on the market. If only Mr. Knight had written his book 10 years ago, many of us would have been saved from endless hours of vague and confusing meetings about what we were really trying to accomplish.

2 out of 5 stars A very basic point of view.......1999-03-10

I expected much more of it. Very basic in it's assesments and definition. I cannot get a real signification of EVA until chapter 6. Good for earliers beginners not awaiting for much academic support

5 out of 5 stars A must read book for companies striving for value creation.......1998-07-14

This book shows how to develop and implement strategies regarding value creation for shareholders. It has a very good mix of theory and business cases. The core aspect of this book is the theory behind the imperative link of: Strategic Planning, Budgeting, Financial Reporting and Incentive Compensation. This theory is tested against many sucessful business cases. The author also shows why some companies fail after incomplete or wrong assumptions on the value based management implementation.

As in previous editions, there is significant coverage of contemporary topics such as activity-based costing, target costing, the value chain, customer profitability analysis, and throughput costing while also including traditional topics such as job-order costing, budgeting and performance evaluation.

I am teaching Management Accounting to the students of MBA and professional bodies for the last 21 years and have critically studied some of the best available text books on the subject. This book is very well written and covers the major topics. It is an outstanding book particularly for beginners and MBA students for a one semister course. The author has proovided good illustrations and a variety of exercises and problems at the end of chapter. However those who wish to specialise in Managerial Accounting need additional readings. I adopted this book for MBA students since its 1st edition was published. At present I have adopted the 5th edition which has been revised in line with the changing environment. Majority of the students have very much appreciated this book because it is easy to understand. I have observed that some students of professional bodies are also referring to this book for reference purpose.
This review pertains to the 5th International edition.
