I believe the title of this book should be "The Complete Guide to Exit Event Stock Options". The author makes his preference for Exit Event stock options clear early on, and throughout the book focuses his attention in that direction. For those of you who don't know, exit event options are stock options that only vest when a company is sold or completes it's IPO. This is a reasonable approach for companies that are likely to seen an exit event in 2-3 years, but not for a company just starting out.

If you're lucky enough to be granted employee stock options--and if the stock is actually worth something!--consider spending a little extra to purchase Robert Pastore's pricey primer on options. Stock options can be quite lucrative, but "while the intention of management and the board of directors is to motivate and reward people through stock options, the reality is that much of the potential wealth that could come from those options is wasted. Why? "The answer is simple," continues Pastore. "Options are complicated. If people maximize the value of their options, it's usually by luck ... blind luck." Thankfully, he writes with the layperson in mind, pinpointing ways to maximize earnings with textbook-like clarity. He explains the difference between incentive and nonqualified options, including charts showing how tax consequences vary, depending on exercise date. Pastore spends considerable time on tax issues, detailing the ramifications of long-term capital gains, alternative minimum tax (AMT), and disqualifying versus nondisqualifying dispositions of stock. Clear and thorough enough for both options newbies and tax professionals, Stock Options should help make blind luck less than necessary for success in the options process. --Rob McDonald

4 out of 5 stars Helped me.......2002-03-10

This book helped me greatly with some stock options I got from my work. I had NSO stock and had not idea how the taxes worked out on it and when the best time was to exercise.
Well this book, I made a good decision and made $80,000 on my stock options.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative, technical, and dry........2002-01-24

Just the book I was looking for in 1999. I applaud Pastore's contribution of clear explanations regarding the types of stock options, tax implications, etc. I used the knowledge gained to weed out prospective financial advisors during interviews. You'd be surprised how many of them don't understand tax law when it comes to employee stock options.

5 out of 5 stars Abundance of useful information, Very easy to read.......2000-10-11

This book is the most efficient piece of writing on the taxation of stock options that I have read. I can extract more useful information with less effort than from any other source. The book explains the taxation of stock options in plain English. Anyone who has been granted stock options or who is an advisor to people with stock options should consider adding this book to his or her library.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2000-04-06

I have a friend of mine, who was granted some stock options from his company. He was totally lost as to the consequences of the granting of the options. I did some research on the subject and my research pointed me into the direction of this book.

Both my friend and myself, were very impressed with the illustrations and ease of reading. Mr. Pastore gave several highly informative illustrations that were well thought out and easily explained.

I would recommend this book without reservation.

5 out of 5 stars Disagree with Westborogh review - Good Book.......2001-05-23

A reader from Westborough reviewed the book and did not find it helpful, I disagree. I think the book is intended for the reader like me who has a limited knowledge of their options. In addition, the stories/examples within the books were the best part of the book. If you have an advanced knowledge of options this book might not be right for you, but if you need a simple, easy to read and enjoyable overview of options - I suggest you read this book.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2001-05-23

I was lost with my options until I read this book. I feel that I am able to guide myself through the maze of options with help of this book.

1 out of 5 stars pass this one........2001-03-17

This book can be characterized as a list of attached examples, or a collection of notes. It is difficult to follow and not thorough. Rather than explaining concepts the authors give examples, one per chapter. Furthermore, most of the material is repeated in each chapter since they apply to all the examples. This is a book made in a hurry by compilation of the authors notes. My major interest was in AMT implications which were ignored. After trying to read it for 2 days it went to a corner of my bookcase.

5 out of 5 stars Employee Stock Options - A Strategic Planning Guide.......2000-07-18

This book helped me learn the basic concepts that I have been missing. I would recommend it to anyone who has options and has not already had the time to educated themself. The Q&A section was informative and the stories made the book "fun" to read. A better choice than the typical text book that many might find hard to relate to.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview, targeted towards the tax professional.......2006-02-26

This was a good, concise overview of stock options, but most of the detail concerned tax treatment of various situations. Not being a tax person or accountant, I could still get some good information about my company's stock option plan but I would recommend this book only to people with a good basic understanding of accounting and tax rules.

5 out of 5 stars All aspects of stock options succinctly explained.......1999-09-15

This book is an invaluable reference for any business owner or advisor contemplating the use of stock options to improve a company's performance, motivate employees and create an ownership culture. The National Center for Employee Ownership, the impetus behind this book, is a national treasure, as far as I'm concerned. Their mandate is to democratize the workplace to best reflect the demands and dynamics of the 21st Century Global Economy. This book uniquely addresses everything a company needs to consider regarding stock options: the business, financial, accounting, legal, securities and human resources/organizational development aspects. You cannot find a better resource or more accessible book in the stock options arena.

1 out of 5 stars Exclusively centered on US law.......1999-07-30

The book is of very limited value for any company outside the US. All explanations are given with regard to US laws and regulations.

        5 out of 5 stars very educational.......1999-07-10

Excellent book. Though the title doesn't sound as hot as "Ectrepreneu's guide to equity", it covers much more and in depth with the same price. It covers all the pros and cons and tax issues for stock option and empolyee stock ownership plan and other incentive plans. The bottom line, after reading the book, you won't be any more confused about each plan. To an employee, it is very helpful in deciding if you want to stay with present employer or change to another one with a better incentive plan. To an entreprenur, this is the Bible. It will benefit your business and your staff enoumously. I wish I had bought this book first. It could have saved me time and money in shipping $ handling fees and returing back to Amazon the "Entrepreneu's Guide to Equity"

5 out of 5 stars A valuable and authoritative book about stock options........1999-06-22

The Stock Option Book is a valuable source of authoritative current knowledge and thinking about stock options for readers whose background may be business, professional, academia, or government. To be effective, a book of this nature should offer a broad perspective. The experiences of a broad range of experts is more important than that of a single expert. Editor Scott Rodrick of the National Center for Employee Ownership has chosen some of the best known stock option experts to contribute to this book. All have been actively involved in the evolution of employee stock option plans. Each chapter in the book stands alone and is complete in itself. While this produces some overlap in certain of the chapters, it eliminates the need for the reader to refer to other chapters, and it provides valuable reinforcement of important concepts. This book is another excellent publication about employee ownership and participation published by the National Center for Employee Ownership.

Now in an fully updated third edition, The Entrepreneur's Guide To Equity Compensation from the Foundation for Enterprise Development provides an excellent and highly recommended introduction to the hows, whys, and wherefores of employee ownership, as well as how empowered employees can help build a cutting-edge, proactive organization. Individual chapters address both individual-based and company-wide stock plans, savings plans that can hold employer stocks, crucial issues that can interfere with success, and much, much more. A recommended primer for any employer, for The Entrepreneur's Guide To Equity Compensation costs far less than what an unwise stock options decision would impose upon a corporate bottom line!

5 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT, CLEAR GUIDE TO EQUITY PLANS!.......2002-06-12

Explains the concept, pros and cons, and tax and cost implications. Viewing this work as a compensation consultant, I find it to be an outstanding reference, providing highly accessible explanations. Very highly recommended.

I recommend it to anyone considering exploring an equity compensation strategy of any kind.

            Book Description

Worth magazine founder Randy Jones shows how to pick the best stocks of the future by learning the lessons of the greatest stocks of all time.

In a turbulent investing environment, luck must be the only way to score in the stock market, right? Not so, says Randy Jones. The people who bought McDonald’s in 1965 or Chrysler in 1980 weren’t just fortunate. Most of them knew how to read the signs of a good stock and jumped on the opportunity. Such stocks exist in every economic climate, and Jones shows readers exactly how to find them.

In The Greatest Stock Picks of All Time, Jones describes twenty-five of the best stock picks ever and explains what made them great. He shows how the smartest investors find companies that are about to zoom, giving readers a framework for analyzing stocks today. For example, Jones explains why AT&T was a great stock pick in the 1920s, Polaroid in the 1940s, Xerox in the 1950s, Teledyne in the 1970s, and Intel in the 1990s. He then guides readers to discover stocks that represent the same kinds of pathbreaking products, innovative business models, great management teams, and other harbingers of success that will certainly be characteristic of the great stock picks of tomorrow. The Greatest Stock Picks of All Time has invaluable lessons for anyone in the market today.

“Today a lot of people think they should murder their brokers, but my advice is don’t. You can stay out of jail and make a lot of money by learning from the greatest stocks of the last century and by heeding this advice for your future investments.”

Learn How to Pick the Right Stock at the Right Time

The momentum of the bull market spoiled us all—buying stock, any stock, was an almost surefire way to make a mint. Now, in a time of turbulent markets, stock picking has become a mixture of science and high art. With thousands of stocks to choose from, how can investors determine which ones will be future winners?

We all know there’s a time to buy and a time to sell every stock, but when is the right time? Timing stock buys so that you catch upward momentum is not luck, and Randy Jones shows you how to hone your buying and selling skills by striving to analyze the factors that made winners of the great stocks in the past. Why was AT&T a great stock pick in the 1920s, Polaroid a winner in the ’40s, Xerox in the ’50s, Teledyne in the ’70s, and Intel in the ’90s? The potential of these stocks was in plain sight—for those who knew how to read the signs. And perhaps as important is understanding the signs of decline and knowing when to sell.

Randy Jones analyzes twenty-five of the greatest stocks of all time, providing a framework for evaluating their strengths that can be used for future selections, including:

              • Linking great management and bottom-line profits: Who were the faces behind AIG, GE, and IBM that led to profitability, and what was it about these people’s management skills that made their companies so great?
              • Pathbreaking products: Polaroid, Xerox, and Amgen show that products that often seem to be overnight sensations were instead developed over many years, giving investors plenty of lead time to discover their potential as great investments.
              • The innovative business model: Avon, McDonald’s, and Dell reveal that understanding how a company makes money helps you to understand its strengths and vulnerabilities.
              • Investing during bad times: For some companies, such as Coca-Cola, Schlumberger, and Chrysler, nationwide economic downturns can actually be advantageous.

Worth’s Greatest Stock Picks of All Time has invaluable lessons for anyone in the market today.
