Book Description

This text offers a comprehensive and original introduction to organization theory and is designed to provide an even handed, balanced appreciation of the different perspectives that have contributed to our knowledge about organizations. The text's approach is pluralist, reflecting the diverse nature of organizational theory as a field of study influenced by thinkers from a variety of academic disciplines. Specifically, perspectives described as `modern', `symbolic-interpretive' and `postmodern' frame the analysis. Students are encouraged to `adopt' these perspectives to expand their own view and to enhance their understanding. A key question addressed throughout the text is the nature of the relationship between organizational theories and the reality these theories describe. Organization Theory is in three parts: * Part 1 introduces the multi-perspective approach * Part 2 explores the ways in which organizations are analysed - as entities within an environment; as subjects of strategic action; as technologies; as social structures; as cultures; and as physical structures * Part 3 covers topics of central importance in organizational theory including decision-making, power, conflict, control and change within organizations. To aid learning the text offers many diagrammatical and conceptual models and each chapter includes a summary, a list of key terms and pointers to further reading.

I'm not sure how attention grabbing org theory can be, but this book was very informative and understandable. The chapters are a nice size, and the summaries are useful.

5 out of 5 stars Doctoral research material.......2001-08-29

Hatch writes in a consise and informative manner. It is not the type of writing that you wonder what you just read. Her writing holds the reader's interest by keeping her style uncomplicated in word and thought. The breath of orgainzational information is outstanding and the depth of each topic seems to be at a level to keep you reading but not overloaded and bored. Highly recommended for org research.

5 out of 5 stars How to look at organizations?.......2000-10-24

The book is an academic level state-of-the-art of organization theory. Definitely the best contemporary book in the field - suitable for all the students, but also for academics and practitioners. It covers both historical and current issues. Though pretty comprehesive, still comprehendable. In lay man language Hatch writes about most difficult issues of organization theory - structure, environment, culture, etc. are all covered, usually with some alternative perspectives (e.g. 'organizational culture' is described also from postmodern and symbolic perspectives, current books and papers are referred etc.).

This book is very readable. Some of the books and papers on organizational theory are so dense that they are practically unreadable. This one effectively conveys the information the author wants you to understand. This is not a pointless book. I can't say that about most of the others I've had to read on organizational theory.

This book is required reading for a graduate OD course I completed this summer. Using the organizational theory perspectives of modernist, symbolic and post modernist, the author carefully guides and builds on theories that support these perspectives. In the end, it give professional change experts a foundation for recommendations. I will continue to use this book as a reference for my internal and external OD/OT work.

    Book Description

Based on nearly a decade of scholarship, this is a highly focused book on the implications of postmodernism for the construction and assessment of theory and practice in educational administration. Current ideas of practice are deconstructed, from the notions of sound research to the use of national standards in the preparation of educational leaders along with ways of examining and resolving the theory-practice gap. Part One of the book contains chapters dealing with the rise of postmodernism and describes its broad-based dissent from a century of thought in the field, including a penetrating examination of whether the concept of a field itself is viable. Part Two of the book explores the many ramifications of postmodernism to practice, beginning with ideas concerning educational research. These chapters tackle the tough issues of the efficacy of the Interstate Leaders Licensure Standards (ISLLC) and the national exam as examples of job deskilling and deprofessionalization in the guise of raising standards of preparation of future educational leaders. Other chapters deal with deconstructing the popular managerial ideas contained in Stephen Covey's works and dispute Joe Murphy's call for a new center of gravity in the field as reinforcing the status quo. Finally, the book tackles the issue of the theory-practice gap and indicates that new and progressive theories which anticipate problems of practice are what is required to deal with this persistent issue. The book contains many helpful exhibits in understanding the issues concerning theory and practice, as well as a glossary of terms most commonly found in postmodern discourse. This book is designed for college and university programs engaged in the preparation of educational leaders for elementary/secondary schools and college administrative positions.

      Book Description

Pathologizing Practices is an innovative cross-cultural study that looks at how deficit thinking pathologizes the lived experiences of children and prevents minority children from achieving their full potential in schools. The book explores the contexts, cultures, and structures of the education systems within which three groups of students-Bedouin, Maori, and Navajo-have been marginalized. Taking a critical democratic perspective, the authors develop a cross-cultural analysis that examines ways in which social justice and academic excellence may be enhanced and pathologies of practice overcome.

      Book Description

Ideology and the Politics of (In)Exclusion provides an international analysis of the politics of research and practice in special education. The contributors to this volume establish purposeful connections to the micropolitics of disability identification and the macropolitics of social structure and describe various geographic locales, recount multiple historical contexts, rely upon differing sources of evidence, and as a consequence, relate a more complex and richly layered analysis of educational inclusion. Ideology and the Politics of (In)Exclusion breaks away from the prevailing discourse on educational inclusion as that which occurs in a vacuum, separate from social inclusion, by providing a close analysis of the narrow frameworks, historic influence, and research tensions that underwrite current special education practice.

If you want a book that will launch you into understanding and thinking about the complexities, multiplicities and varied sites that maintain the persistence of exclusion and the difficulties in creating inclusive schools and societies, this is the book for you.
The chapters in Ideology and the politics of in/exclusion are based on a conference organized by the editor in 1999. The focus of the conference was an article that laid bare the underlying assumptions and ideological positions of proponents and opponents of inclusive education (Brantlinger, 1997). The article was titled, "Using ideology: Cases of non-recognition of research and practice in special education." Ware asked conference presenters to provide "cases of recognition." Consequently, the book provides a satisfying range of perspectives on the processes by which ex/inclusive education is shaped, reproduced or disrupted, through a lens of ideology. The book is international in scope. Barton's chapter looks at the impact that globalization and economic rationality have had on the politics and practice of inclusive education in England. Keith Ballard analyzes how the "New Right ideology" in New Zealand has constricted opportunities for those in marginalized positions. Nes and Stromstad trace the political ideologies in Norway's history that led to the Scandinavian welfare state and how this led to inclusive schooling. Sally Tomlinson discusses the persistence of racism and the complicity of special education in maintaining it. Roger Slee explicates the ideological reproduction of exclusion in inclusive teacher education programs. Not all of the chapters are about the reproduction of exclusion. Julie Allan provides a way of thinking about the in-your-face poetry, art and performance art by people with disabilities and frames out an "aesthetic of disability as productive ideology." Through their use of the body and a reclaiming of words that have historically been used to oppress, disabled people disrupt and transform traditional notions of disability.
The final section focuses on research. Lous Hesushius - as always - gives an honest account of how personal the study of disability must be. She challenges researchers to uncover their own biases and exclusive tendencies. MacArthur lends insight into the tensions between parents and professionals and who gets defined as "expert" and who gets dismissed. Finally, Ware explains the hard work involved in moving schools and districts toward inclusion. Her account is not presented as a tidy account of how everything worked out after an initial struggle. But it does challenge us to look at the complexity of inclusion.
Ultimately, that is the strength and importance of this book. Much of the inclusion literature in the US is about techniques, methods, how to co-teach, modify curriculum, etc.. - the technical aspects of inclusion. What this book illustrates, however, is the importance of other forces - and the multiple ideologies - that shape and reproduce an exclusive society. In Ware's account, some of the district administrators did not change their view or practice, whereas some of the teachers did, under difficult circumstances. She ends with "That the teachers could recognize the impact of the symbolic violence on the lives of their students, made all the difference - really, the only difference." (p. 201).

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR EDUCATORS!.......2005-01-14

This insightful edition examines some of the disableist reasoning behind the exclusion of students with disabilities. It offers some powerful explanations as to why inclusion has been problematic in the past and what it would take to create more inclusive educational settings for students with disabilities. It scrutinizes the field of special education by providing an historical analysis of the systems and methods leading up to its development. As a special education teacher, I strongly recommend this book to all educators.

        Book Description

Educational research and poetics are often not included in the same conversation. Educational Poetics: Inquiry, Freedom and Innovative Necessity is one of the only texts to explore the possibilities of linking these domains to develop an emergent form of inquiry. Such an inquiry utilizes our human potential to go beyond the seductive force of everyday commonsense to consider and put into place alternative perspectives that are often hidden from view. These alternative perspectives, in turn, help create the ability to free ourselves from mental slavery as we change, in inventive ways, a form of innovative necessity.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking and empowering.......2005-03-21

Initially, I read this book because of a friendship. Once I got into the book, I realized the information was applicable to relationships in my life, including employer-employee, parent-child, and personal. In particular, I found new perspectives on fostering synergy in relationships. I could see that when relationships incorporate an environment of synergy, a sense of empowerment emerges that leads to limitlesss and ever-evolving possibilities. This book is a must read for those interesting in challenging the status quo and developing relations of freedom.

          Book Description

Dos & Don'ts of Education Reform is a unique critical study of legislated reform in the U.S. Resisting the temptation to make facile recommendations for future action, this book takes pointed aim at the failure of education reform. Roselli blames a narrow-minded focus on testing and accountability, advocating instead for an honest, morally-driven construction of theory and practice. He breaks new ground in this close, multidisciplinary examination of curriculum, instruction and assessment by demonstrating how to create the conditions for a successful school experience for all students: a sociocultural view of success and a strong desire to improve the human condition. This book is an excellent accompaniment to courses such as social foundations of education and critical issues in education, as well as those dealing with educational policy and leadership.

Forget Tom Peters and the other self-aggrandizing gurus and prophets of management whose insights into theoretical and social changes are as deep as a sheet of paper. David Boje has established himself as THE leading thinker in management and organization theory. Almost single-handedly, through his prolific writing and public talks, Boje has transformed the paradigms of the business world. Boje is to business and managment what Carl Sagan was to science: not only a gifted thinker and writer, but also an indispensible popularizer of crucial disciplinary changes. This book, co-authored with prestigious colleagues, brings the business world into contact with feminism, critical theory, ecology (here Gephart offers major contribuions), and postmodernism in a sparkingly lucid manner. By now, every academic discipline has taken a postmodern turn, even business and management. This anthology explains what is at stake and offers the new maps and compasses for negotiating changes in advanced global capitalism and for democratizing the workplace. It is an invaluable teaching resource for all those interested in the paradigm shifts altering the theory and practice of business and management, and is fully accessible to a nonacademic business audience who want to keep apace with current changes. Indeed, anyone interested in postmodern theory and how it is hardly a passing "fad" would profit from understanding how postmodern insights play out in this field. From my own disciplinary standpoint in philosophy, I learned a great deal and I highly recommend this work.

This is the first book that I stopped reading in the middle. The authors seem to know a lot about cost management and other tools. However, the way to link them together and present in a logical way may be the big problem for this book. It's like a book that reviewed all management new ideas i.e. ABC, BSC, TQM .... and tried to link to the concept of cost management system. But I would say that it really didn't work!!!!!
