The Classic Account of the Battle of Britain.......2006-11-11
"The Narrow Margin", first published in 1961 and periodically updated and reissued since, is the classic account of the Battle of Britain. The defeat by an undermanned British Royal Air Force (RAF) of the German Luftwaffe offensive to gain air superiority over Britain in 1940 likely staved off a German invasion and kept Britain in the war.
Authors Derek Wood and Derek Dempster provide a methodical account of the air battle, beginning with the retooling of the British and German air forces in the 1930's in preparation for conflict. Each side made choices about the types of aircraft they would develop that shape their successes in the Second World War. The second part of the book discusses the Fall of France in 1940 and Britain's frantic preparations after the Dunkirk evacuation to build up the defenses of the home island. Part three is a day by day account of the actual air battles between July and October 1940, tracing the shifting tactics and objectives of the two sides.
This book is a factual account, packed with an excellent selection of photographs, graphics, maps, and appendices. Those readers looking for a romantic account of a few handfulls of embattled British fighter pilots standing off the undefeated might of the Luftwaffe will have other alternatives to this volume, which focuses on the practical necessities of efficient early warning, the comparative values of different aircraft, the availability of trained pilots, and the use of effective tactics. Incidentally, "The Narrow Margin" was the basis for the 1969 movie "The Battle of Britain."
This book is highly recommended to students of the Battle of Britain and the Second World War.
Book Description
When was the last time you heard the name Air Traffic Controller?
Most likely it was to berate him because his job action caused you to miss an important meeting. You may have been caught in a "by the book" slow down. Perhaps you spent an extra hour flying in endless circles awaiting clearance to land.
There are far more to these delays than meets the eye. When negotiations between controller and government grind to a halt there is little that a controller can do. He is forbidden by law to strike. His only recourse is to slow the traffic. This they occasionally do in order to get better equipment, working conditions, and pay.
This book, written by an active airline captain, will take you behind the scenes in the life of an air traffic controller. A person who guides the destiny of more people in one hour than an airline pilot does in a month, a person who controls all the departures and arrivals out of the three busiest airports in New York and does it with radar that isn't half as reliable as the radar used in a small country airport, a person who must think in three dimensions and be ready when their scope goes blank to remember name, position, heading and altitude of 18 aircrafts, a person who can never be allowed the luxury of a single mistake, a person who would rather control traffic than do anything else, in spite of the fears and anxieties that it entails.
Hopefully after reading this book you will agree that all the glory and skill should not be confined to the cockpit, but shared equally by the men and women whose skill make a faulty system work.
**********
"Captain Brian Power-Waters is intimately knowledgeable concerning the air traffic control system. As an airline captain, he brings the knowledge associated with his twenty-six years as a line pilot. Coupled with his close relationship with air traffic controllers for over twenty years, he is acutely aware of and acquainted with the problems of both professions. Captain Power-Waters provides us with a first time insight into the workings of the air traffic controller profession. The challenges and the many problems encountered in the current air traffic control system."
John F.Leyden, President, Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization
**********
"A fascinating--and sometimes hair raising--account of how the air traffic control system really works and what can be done to improve the situation. As an experienced airline pilot, Captain Power-Waters knows what he is talking about and lays the facts before the public. Anyone who travels by air should read this book."
Con Hitchcock, Director of the Aviation Consumer Action Project and Aide to Ralph Nader

Thank You for Every Chapter.......2002-01-21
I thoroughly enjoyed Margin for Error: None, and I thank you for every chapter. There are a lot of men and women controllers out there that feel the same way I do about people like you. Thanks again. Gary Lashbrock, Miami Tower.

Margin for Error: None outlines his views on the nation's air traffic control system. Included were such chapters as "Danger, FAA at Work" and "Controllers Mate It Work." Baltimore Sun
Tells It Like It Is.......2002-01-21
Captain Power-Waters "tells it like it is" through the use of many examples. Unfortunately, those who should read this book-FAA officials-probably won't. C.W. Glines (author of numerous books on aviation) in Airline Pilot Magazine.

Never, have so many , owed so much , to so few.......1998-04-16
Never in the field of human conflict ,have so many, owed so much, to so few. That's how Sir Winston Churchill, remembered the brave pilots of The Royal Air Force, for their courage during the Battle of Britain in 1940. This excellent book tells the stories warts and all about how britain just survived this great air battle , which was intended to destroy the RAF prior to invasion by Nazi armed forces in operation Sealion 1940. This book was also the basis for the film Battle of Britain. It details all the intrigue behind the walls of RAF fighter command between Dowding and Park on one side and Leigh-Mallory and Bader on the other side in a controversy about tacticts and stratergy. (it's a wonder the RAF won)

How I Passed.......2007-02-01
That should be 5 stars... Having zero financial background, I researched all the book reviews and decided to go with the book and CDrom available directly from Kaplan (purchased Dearborn). They sell their newest, second edition direct from their website as a bundle with the CDrom. I also used a book and audio CD set from "Pass The 7" (Robert Walker). I read each section from both books, then used the practice exams on Kaplan's CDrom to identify areas of weakness, and went back to re-read those topics. I listened to the audio CD's in the car constantly. I did full-length, 250 question practice exams each day for 10 days and went back to re-read areas of weakness. I studied part-time (about 2 hours a day on average) for 3 months (I have a busy life and a family) and ended up getting an 86% on the real thing in a little under 4 hours. I felt well-prepared doing it the way I did. 66% of test-takers passed in 2006 with an average score of 73%. I didn't do too badly :)
Just took the test.......2004-10-26
I have little financial background and needed to pass the test in about a month. Here is what I did with this book, the only book I have ever used.
1) read the book one time. Do all the chapter tests. Understand them as best you can. Read all of the material once.
I suggest 30-50 pages a night depending on what subject. Unfortunately the first few sections are a grind (Munis and Options are included) and take longer - make sure to read these to understanding.
Pay attentin to all "test topic" alerts in the book.
2) Buy the CD and take tests. Lots of tests. Lots and lots of tests. Take full section tests ( I took them in increments of 50 and 100) until you are getting 80% of them correct.
At the end of each section of the book - take multiple tests on that section on the CD immediately afterwards. AS you read more and more sections - combine more and more subjects into the tests you take along with taking some that are subject specific.
Take tests that include all of the subjects too - then find what sections and sub-sections you are scoring poorly on and take tests upon test of just those subjects until you know them.
The CD is a must. You HAVE to have it. I probably took 150 tests ranging from full 125 all subject practice tests (that are JUST like the real thing as far as form and questions) to 50 question tests focusing on subjects I was scoring poorly on.
1) study the book and do the tests in the book
2) get the CD and go to town like a madman. Take tests until you cant take any more tests. You cannot take too many.
I got 87 first try and finished the first 3 hour session in 50 minutes and the second 3 hour section in 1 hour and 15 minutes. Took under 2 hours total. About 30% of the questions were EXACT - the others similiar.
My only complaint is that the section on Order Entry/Confirmation/and Settlement sections. I was in the 60% range on the test for that section and was LOST during the test on q's regarding those subjects.
You can pass the test with a month, this book and the dearborn CD.
good luck
Here's how you pass the Series 7 Exam.......2004-06-27
Honestly, all the books out there (including this one) for the Series 7 exam are thick and filled with too much information. If you actually try to read the book from front to back, you are doing yourself a disservice. It is way too much information to retain. By the time you complete reading the book, you would have forgotten everything in the beginning.
My advice: Skip reading the book and jump straight into doing the practice exams. Read the questions and compare it to the answer. Only use the book as a reference. Do the practice exams over and over until you have a passing score of 80%+.
The book is actually pretty good if you insist on reading it. They explain the difficult concepts pretty well with the use of visual aids and Hotsheet summary.
Good luck! Get plenty of rest the night before. The test is long and draining!
Comprehensive Review to Pass Test.......2004-05-08
This is an excellent book. I recommend completing the book in 25 days ~30 pages per day. Get the CD and do multiple 100+ questions test. Also, the audio CDs are excellent.
Score: 92%
If you can get through the book it is ok.......2004-03-09
As one other reader mentioned, there are some mistakes which are a bit fustrating. My advice if you are going to get this book is to leave yourself plenty of time to take some online tests as well. I don't think it's manageable to go through this book as well as another one, but be advised that there are some items on the test that I didn't see in the book (i.e. money laundering). Study time (4 weeks + online tests). Score: 84.

Fully interactive, user-friendly, learner-oriented. .......2004-08-29
I bought the book thinking that it would merely be instructing in an traditional ways. However, I was totally wrong.
It comes with so many helpful features:
1. Test Topic Alert! --- This makes sure that you understand the most tested concepts and reminds you to pay more attention to certain topics.
2. Take Notes --- it provides more details and explanations on difficult concepts. It clears up common misunderstandings.
3. Example ---- Very detailed, helpful examples that contributes to good interpretion.
4. Quiz ---- they are not that easy, although they may sound like they are. Quizes enforces the reader to understand certain concepts before he/she goes on to next topic. All comes with answer and rationale, which is extremely helpful.
5. Lesson Exams --- Chapter test. Gives you a general idea how you did in that lesson.
6. Hot Sheet (Most creative and important feature!) --- it actually helps you to focus and literally have notes ready for each lesson. It is especially helpful during final review.
Happy reading. It's a must read if you are serious about taking the "series 7", a long 6-hour exam.
dearborn the best.......2004-06-23
Took my series 7 exam today (6/21/04)( 84%). I read Barrons, Arco and Dearborn.
Dearborn was clearly the best hands down. They had great studying tips, easy to read format, you CAN pass the test with this book alone. Just cover everything, answer every practice question, use the disc and there will be no surprises. Arco was OK, but compared to Dearborn it doesn't hold a candle. I was initially a bit worried because I had the 12th edition ( 3 yrs. old) but it didn't matter. Good luck to all...
GOOD ENOUGH TO PASS!!!!!.......2003-12-08
Dearborn is an outstanding company who writes superior material so you can pass the test you need. Myself failed this exam 3 times using Bisys Education material. I switched to Dearborn to study for my series 6, 63 and here just recently my 7 exam again. I passed each one the very first time using thier study books and cd roms. I passed the Series 7 with a 78% didn't even feel like I had any worries about failing when I turned in my exam. Passed no problem. I deffinatley reccomend this book to anybody wanting to pass the series 7 the first time through. Read the book once, pay attention, have it on hand for refreshers, and just pound the CD-ROM Drills hard everyday do at least two of them every single day. If you pound them consistently and wear yourself out on them you will have no problem passing. Good Luck and USE THIS BOOK TO PASS!!!!
Our firm uses this book exclusively.......2003-11-05
We are a broker-dealer (equities + derivatives + stock futures) and have found that, for our new employees, in comparison to all of the other Series 7 test prep books, this is the best...and by a very large margin. If you only bought one book, then this is it. None of the others even come close.
If you don't have the cash to take a "crash course" you can pass the exam with only this book. BUT...you really have to throughly study the chapters, and then honestly take all of the paper and CD based tests and then review all of your mistakes and research why they are mistakes and then continue to do so until you consistently get scores in the 80's then you will pass the Series 7 Exam.
Since, according to law, if you are required to take the "Series 7" then you are usually required to take the "Series 63" (State law) exam, we strongly recommend this publisher's companion book, the "Series 63 Exam" book. Yes, that book "blows away" its competition also.
Please refer to our review on this publisher's "Series 24" exam, not so much that you will immediately need to take the higher level, "Series 24" exam, but for the description about securities industry licensing and registration, as you WILL NEED your employing firm to sponsor you, in order to be allowed to take this exam.
Thus if you are un-employed, you cannot take this exam on your own inititiave, even if you think it is your ticket into the securites industry...so don't waste the money for this book and its companion book (Series 63) unless you are actually employed by a securites firm and they are willing to fill out all of the forms and to sponsor and approve of your taking of this exam.
Another thing.....don't even spend the money for this book, if you have ever been charged (note that the threshold is charged with , not convicted or dismissed) with any crime that in any way relates to money in the last ten years, since there is a very good chance that you will be barred from the securites industry (Federal Law), so take the time to check with your employer and the Federal "U-4" form that they have on you.

I don't think you will find better!.......2003-10-07
This is a very comprehensive and excellent manual. I read this book once, took the class, then spent a month doing the practice tests and practice finals. On the last two practice finals I got 86% on each. Today, I took the 7 and passed with an 84%. I found the questions on the CD ROM (which comes with the book) almost indentical to the actual exam, and even more difficult than the exam. If you read the book once, take the class, then keep doing practice tests and practice finals, over and over, scoring at least 80%, you will pass the Series 7 easily. There were absolutely no surprises on the test today, and there were only 2 or 3 questions that I wasn't fimiliar with. This is great material. Great! I am very pleased and will use Dearborn for the Series 66.

Taking the Series 6.......2000-04-29
I originally purchased this book to study for the Series 6 exam. I found it very helpful since it covered all the topics I wanted to review. Equities, bonds, economic policy, mutual funds, and even retirement planning were all covered in great detail. It's a good study guide too, because it has questions at the end of each section. If your taking the Series 6, I would like to recommend this book, and wish you good luck!

Buy book not online course.......2007-06-30
the book and cd area great. their online course has problems. it times out so you constantly have to go thru a menu of password access...very frustrating. with the cd it can't crash...as the on-line version does and you find yourself locked out a day before your exam! oh yes, when the online program crashes on the weekend, you are on your own!!! Kaplan doesn't have enough resources to man a help desk so you are just out of luck! If you can attend a class, that's the best. I successfully passed series 7 using their class in LA.
