1 out of 5 stars Outdated and little valuation theory.......2002-12-05

This book only contains the present value calculations for the various items on a balance sheet. It is an introductory book on what happens to the present value if the market rate changes by 200 basis points. Unfortunately the book does not touch on bank valuation, but is a primer on market valuation used in interest rate risk analysis.

      Book Description

Is Purchase Price Equal to Fair Value?

With the FASB changing the requirements for increasing categories of assets and liabilities to be shown at current fair value, Fair Value for Financial Reporting answers this and other pertinent questions with crystal clarity. Alfred King, a top expert in the field, provides financial executives and auditors with a deep understanding of fair value reporting, the appraisal process, and appraisal services, and demystifies this topic with practical advice and helpful knowledge, making it a trusted reference on the ins and outs of fair value financial disclosure.

Fair Value for Financial Reporting highlights the accounting and auditing requirements for fair value information and offers a detailed explanation of how the FASB is going to change "fair value" with topics including: the FASB's fair value proposals; determining the fair value of intangible assets; whether fair value can truly be audited; valuation of liabilities and contingent payments; valuation of hard assets and real estate; why two appraisers come up with different results; auditing of valuation reports; and selecting and working with an appraiser.

5 out of 5 stars A must read on SFAS 141 and 142.......2002-06-14

If you need to comply with SFAS 141 and 142, you will want to read this book. The authors understand these standards inside and out. The book's coverage is practical, thorough and written in easy to understand language (which is important because the changes outlined in SFAS 141 and 142 are far reaching and complex.) The best part of this book is that in addition to providing compliance guidance for SFAS 141 & 142, it also shows you how to apply the standards. This is key! I also found the book helpful on showing me how to identify and value intagible assests which is still a somewhatnew area for me.

5 out of 5 stars Great coverage of new SFAS 141 and 142.......2002-06-11

This is timely and excellent coverage of SFAS 141 and 142. The authors' explanation are clear and complete. I would recommend this book to everyone involved in valuation.

        Book Description

Risk Management: FASB recently postponed the implementation of its new rules on accounting for the use of derivatives instruments. However, if the final set of rules for figuring the fair value of derivatives is not carefully crafted, it may be possible that companies prudently hedging their risks are subject to penalties in their financial reports, while companies taking greater risks appear to have less volatile financial performance. Compared to banks and other financial intermediaries, life insurance companies have the longest term and most complex liabilities, and hence the new FASB requirement poses the most severe challenges to the life insurance industry. The lessons learned from the debate among life insurance academics and professionals about how respond to the fair value reporting rule will be instructive to their counterparts in other sectors of the insurance industry, as well as those involved with other financial institutions. Of particular note are the two papers which comprise Part III. The first provides examples of the fair valuing of annuity contracts, while the second offers examples of the fair valuing of term insurance products. As the papers collected in The Fair Value of Insurance Business extend and update some of the issues treated in a previous Salomon Center conference volume, The Fair Value of Insurance Liabilities, this new volume may be viewed as a companion to the earlier book.

5 out of 5 stars Teaches children great values.......2003-11-20

This children's book claims to teach citizenship, teamwork and responsibility and it does it well!

"It's Not Fair," by Carl Sommer, is a story about a little worker bee named Buzzie, who thought it was unfair that all the worker bees had so much work to do, while the other bees didn't. When she complained to all of the other bees, they decide to create a new hive of their own. Without a leader, chaos soon erupts and no one is happy. Buzzie then learns that everyone needs to have their own place in order to live peacefully. The bees then return to their old hive and are very happy working together again.

MyParenTime.com highly recommends this book -- it teaches children that everyone has a place in this world and if we all work together we can accomplish great things. It also teaches responsibility and the idea of belonging to a group and working together -- an important skill for children to learn throughout life. In addition, the illustrations are very colorful and engaging.

          Book Description

Written for managers and professionals in business and industry, this book helps the reader in:

          * Understanding what is and is not IFRS
          * Learning the complexities of IFRS implementation
          * Appreciating the contribution of IFRS to corporate governance

The changeover from the mosaic of different heterogeneous national accounting standards to the International Financial Reporting Standards has not been easy. For many companies IFRS, and most particularly the concept of fair value in IAS 39, has amounted to a phase shift which is prerequisite to achieving compliant financial reporting.

The research conducted by Dr. Chorafas for this book, documented that the process of meeting IFRS requirements presents opportunities and challenges to all enterprises. As many companies have found out, abandoning the classical accruals accounting for marking-to-market their transactions and portfolio positions, has not been easy. The conversion process has affected several functions within the organization including balance sheets, P&L statements, auditing, risk control, information systems, and management accounting.

This book is in made up of four parts:

          * Part One focuses on business competition, standards boards, corporate accounting, and IAS 39

          * The theme of Part Two, is the implementation of IFRS, exemplified through case studies on task forces and practical applications

          * Part Three brings together IFRS and management accounting requirements, with emphasis on fair value.

          * Part Four addresses itself to the contribution IFRS can make to better corporate governance, and to rebuilding the balance sheet

The book has many case studies based on actual experiences. These range from the implementation of IFRS directives such as hedge accounting, to developing practices of real-time balance sheets; the help provided by sophisticated accounting solutions help in stress testing; and a comprehensive definition of the role of the audit committee.

          * A clear and practical view of the complexities of IFRS implementation
          * Includes practical case studies from real-life companies going through the process
          * Pays particular attention to IAS 39 on Fair Value
