Customer Reviews:
It Resonates with Great Cases and Great Examples.......2006-11-02
This new edition of Marketing Across Cultures resonates with the great cases and great examples. It's a great stand-alone book for an international marketing course or even a supplimental text for a capstone strategy course. Not only does it gives a 'marketing immersion' but it also gives a 'cultural immersion' to undergrads or MBA students who don't have much out-of-country experience. The authors definitely walk their talk in terms of their professional experiences in the US and abroad.
excellent text for teaching and student research.......2005-08-17
One of the few marketing texts that discusses in detail the complexities of international and cross-cultural marketing. Thought-provoking. The case studies are interesting and unique, great material for class discussions and debates! A real resource for Master's level courses in marketing and international business. It's good for required reading or as a secondary text, to support a more step-by-step marketing text. The writing is sometimes a bit long-winded and not too easy to read, which is why I didn't give the book five stars.
Recommended reading for active international marketers.......1998-10-10
Our staff includes this publication in our selected list of international trade publications that we recommend to our clients. It presents a clear picture of the many factors involved in marketing products, ideas and concepts in foreign countries. A good reference to keep within reach when planning to introduce a new product or service overseas. John R. Jagoe, Director, Export Institute.

Striking a unique balance between skills and theory, Intercultural Competence provides readers with the background and confidence to succeed in today's multi-cultural environment.
Blending both the practical and the theoretical, the concrete and the abstract, this book is both enjoyable to read and thoroughly researched. By clearly explaining different theories and the significance of cultural patterns and having readers practice what they learn via examples in the book, Intercultural Competence better prepares readers to interact in intercultural relationships. The book also provides a discussion of important ethical and social issues relating to intercultural communication. The authors cover American multiculturalism as well as global cultural issues.
For anyone interested in intercultural communication.
Customer Reviews:
Academically Sound.......2007-08-21
I have been teaching Intercultural Communication using this text (previous edition). After completing my MPhil in Intercultural Communication and being exposed to alot of texts in the field, I am still confident that this text is a very good introduction for college students. I have been teaching groups of students that are very diverse, with up to 14 different cultures at one time, and we always have fun with this book, because we are able to discuss the concepts very broadly. I still have to find a better book in its class.
Maximum incompetence........2004-05-28
Intercultural competence! What a totally inappropriate title for a book, especially when the subject matter is; view points of different cultures. Who gets to decide who is competent and who is not? Would one become competent after they read this book? People who do not agree with the authors, are they incompetent? After the initial shock of the title, I started reading this book, in fact I had to read the whole thing since it was the text book of a class that I was taking. Unfortunately the shock intensified. They define things that are not definable and they categorize things in the most reductionist and mechanistic fashion. Not only that but they don't even use English properly. They ask a question about apples and then give an answer about oranges, not realizing that the question has really no answer and should not be asked to begin with. This book is supposed to be about different points of view but there is nothing in it that would make one understand other cultures. It is all about the extremely narrow and linear point of view of the authors. They explain the simplest concepts in the most convoluted way possible but in reality the information is extremely superficial. They basically name and categorize things and consider them understood. After a few weeks our class turned into 'lets find out how wrong the authors are' class. I must admit after that it was kind of fun. When I asked my teacher as to why she chose this book, thinking perhaps I am missing something, her answer was "because it seems to be quite popular"! So now we are reading books not because of their content but because of their popularity. What a disappointment.
Book Description
Church Signs Across America celebrates the wit, charm, and verse of church signs from every state in the U.S. At the same time reverent and witty, these signs offer fascinating glimpses into American life that are variously humorous, inspirational, kitschy, and kindand occasionally all those things at once. After finding their inspiration for the book during a road trip from Florida to Alaska, husband and wife team Steve and Pam Paulson traveled to every corner of the country photographing the signs of churches large and small, and of every denomination.
Among the gems uncovered over the course of the journey are puns, "Seven days without prayer makes one weak"; admonishments, "The Ten Commandments are not multiple choice"; family advice, "Families are like fudge . . . mostly sweet with a few nuts"; and sales pitches, "Looking for a lifeguard? Ours walks on water."
Church Signs Across America includes photographs of American churches both imposing and humble, and it is as remarkable for its display of the diversity of American church architecture as it is for the variety of humor and inspiration displayed in the signs. Appealing to both churchgoers and drive-by appreciators of this uniquely American form of wit and wisdom, this inimitable book is sure to become an uplifting and amusing classica laugh from the belly as well as from the heart.

THIS BOOK WAS JUST GREAT, SHOWING CHURCH SIGNS ACROSS AMERICA. I HAVE SHARED IT WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY ALIKE, AND ALL AGREE IT IS WONDERFUL. THANK YOU FOR THE CHANCE TO OWN IT.
Perfect Gift..........2007-07-10
This absolutely delightful book includes a cross-section of the country's church signs. Sometimes amusing, sometimes thoughtful, sometimes inspiring and sometimes head-scratching. A powerful combination of marketing and faith. And, the architecture of the churches is a fascinating bonus. A perfect gift for someone in need of a lift.
He is risen!.......2007-06-06
what a beautiful book. kudos to the designers and editors who were able to transform what appears to have been a lackluster collection of snapshots into a stunning--and hip--package. cheers!
Uplifting Picture Book.......2007-05-15
This is a wonderful, spiritually uplifting coffee table volume. The photos show 142 different messages on the roadside signs from a wide variety of churches throughout America. It's just as you would see them if driving by. Great stuff.
Great Book.......2007-05-14
Very good book. I gave it as a gift to my Pastor and he really liked it.

Insightful!.......2004-08-05
Sicco Van Gelder has written the definitive textbook on analyzing global branding strategy. Packed with examples, in-depth case studies and hypothetical branding projects, this book will prove useful to companies entering global markets or launching global brands. From the stunning worldwide success of the Sony Walkman to the dismal global failure of New Coke, Van Gelder scrutinizes the factors that shape a global brand. He issues a timely reminder that local cultures and consumers differ, and that branding must account for local differences in multiple markets. Note that this is a textbook, not a manual. The author explains his "global brand proposition model" in minute detail, which can get a little dense and repetitive at times. While the final chapters contain several useful illustrations of the analytical model in action, this is not a how-to book. Nevertheless, we believe this thoughtful tome deserves a spot on the reference shelf of brand specialists and marketers, as well as the executives of any company that operates in more than one country.
A hands-on advisory guide.......2004-04-05
Sicco van Gelder is the expert who runs Brand Meta, a Netherlands-based global branding consultancy. In Global Brand Strategy: Unlocking Brand Potential Across Countries, Cultures & Markets, Gelder draws upon his many years of experience and expertise to write an authoritative and "user friendly" business guide to creating brand expression, develop marketing strategies and implementations in a global market. Especially recommended reading for business managers seeking to master an international legacy of name recognition, individual chapters deftly cover the importance of brand reputation, affinity, name recognition, the unique roadblocks to making a local brand global, and so much more in this hands-on advisory guide written directly from experience and a proven record of corporate success.

Just necessary to succeed in a global business.......2002-10-20
If you have to deal with collegues in an international company, if you want to understand your customer or supplier, if you want to reduce unnecessary friction, you must understand how your counterparty interprets your behaviour. This book is a great help with its coordinate system of cultures.
Go Global.......2000-09-04
A very useful book if you need to GO GLOBAL. It give you the first hints about characteristics of foreign culture, even your own cultures. The structure and the very practically and lively examples make the book easy and sometimes funney to read. A strong buy for those who need or want to look outside of their own culture. Best book that I have seen so far in this area. No theories, pure reallity. I tested it live and it helped me in various situation to understand pitfalls that I hit or avoid pitfalls.

Description:
There is increasing interest in the theoretical and practical challenges that managers face in having to deal with the multiple dualities inherent in managing a portfolio of different business relationships. A number of relationship portfolio models have been developed which use a wide range of criteria for categorizing relationships. The research reported here takes a different approach by identifying the key process and/or outcome elements which managers use to distinguish between successful and problematic relationships, and also offering a comparison of the managers' perceptions across three different countries. The aim is to contribute to the development of more robust management thinking and action. Managers in the United Kingdom (UK), France and Finland were found to think about relationships in terms of both process and outcome variables. Whilst the outcome variables used to discriminate between successful and problematic relationships vary slightly across countries, it was found that they all used the process variables of trust and problem resolution.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for a beginner.......2006-12-16
Recently I decided to try short-term trading. Soon I realise that I need to learn more. What is going on behind bid/ask postings, how to read and interpret Level II quotes, what is Naqdaq TotalView, what advance platforms are available today, etc? So I went to local bookstore and browsed through the section. Didn't find anything satisfactory so bought this book as a temporary solution. After an hour of reading I decided to write my first book review on Amazon.com. This is simply the best book I could hope to find on the subject: precise, structured, brief yet informative, state-of-the-art information. Excellent book overall. I highly recommend this book for beginners and may be even more experienced traders that didn't keep up with the latest advances. My only complain is that the indexing is not detail enough.
MUCH Better than first edition.......2005-11-11
New edition just out. More sensible approach, and updated. Definitely worth the money, especially for new traders.
It does have a few nuggets ... How ever..........2005-09-27
This particular book is fine as a general reference on the stock market, but frankly beginners will need more concrete and to the point strategies to make it as online stock traders.
The reality is that the stock market doesn't care if you are a beginner. It will gladly take your money away if you don't know what your doing. So the bottom line is, you better be PREPARED before you even think about making your first trade.
Stock trading is a very competitive field and in order to succeed you need to FOCUS on a set of simple strategies that you can implement without hesitation.
This game is all about buying and selling according to your set ups. So the clearer your set ups are, the easier for you can be to make a profitable decision.
Hopefully some sites on the web do offer more relevant and updated stock trading information. One of those sites is Sharp Trades ( SharpTrades com )
They focus mainly on short term momentum stock trading strategies, that in my opinion are easier to implement than many other technical systems outhere.
Stock trading doesn't have to be complicated as many people perceive. But you do need to follow a well organized set of rules and tactics, that once you master them, you can aspire to replicate profitable trades with consistency.
Good first book on day trading.......2005-03-09
If your stock market experience is limited, this book will serve as a good introduction. The material is basic and presented in an easily understood format.
0 stars if allowed.......2004-12-21
Sorry, but this book appears to have been written by a wanna be writer whose style---if you can call it that---is so blatantly irritating, condescending, and ridiculous that its facetiouseness distracts from any worth the book might otherwise provide which is minimal at best. Almost every paragraph contains a silly lead in to the next as if the writer is trying to hold your hand and help you 'get through' the material. Stuff like, 'ok, we're almost there now!' and 'I know you probably want to get right to the good stuff, but first, let's get a few of the harder points over with!....' Still with me? Both the writer and publisher should be pilloried for presuming the public is THAT dumb. You guessed it: don't buy this rubbish. And while we're at it, probably the only other book that's just as bad as this one for silliness is Toni Turner's.

A great place to begin........2005-01-31
This book is a great place for the beginning investor. In fact, it oughta be required reading for anyone about to get married. It gives the basics on everything from retirements accounts (of all types) to buying a home, to creating your own financial plan, even advice on divorce. Just about any basic information on finances that a person would need can be found here. Someone looking for something a little deeper might do well to skim the book to glean usable info and then to find something a little more specific.
As a side note, if you've read this title, skip reading "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Savvy Investing," as these two books are essentially the same.
Mind-boggling Return on Investment!.......2003-02-21
Read Investing Like a pro before you make any Investment decisions. It is from the idiots guide series; don't let the name detour you. The information is priceless, from Roth IRAs to Hedging funds. "The book is good." After you are done reviewing, then decide if a FC is worth it!
Simple Explanations of Effective Investments.......2003-01-16
Koch and DeSalvo have complied a comprehensive investment guide for the average person. Even those with financial experience who need information in a concise and user-friendly manner will benefit from owning this book. I am not ashamed to own "Idiot's" guides, simply because I have my own area of specialty, and do not have the time or will to specialize in every area in which I have a passing need or interest. This is where this book comes in, because most people don't have time to get a degree in finance or an investment license just to make their money grow.
This book covers the basics like investment risk tolerance, investment needs, and then covers ways to make more money available to invest. The authors point out that saving money is a form of tax-free investment. Then the authors discuss stocks, mutual funds, home ownership, saving for college, and reducing taxes. Finally they explore more risky investments like options and futures, as well as providing tips for online investing. The book has a few glossy pages, numerous charts and tables, and a glossary.
Overall, I recommend this book wholeheartedly. I knew nothing about investing until recently, and after I got my Series 7 license, I realized that this book had provided me with a strong background with which to begin studying. Honestly, after working with many financial planners, I think this book is probably more useful than many financial planners out there. While it won't make you an expert, it will provide the basic essential information the average beginning investor needs. Read this, and then move on to more advanced books, but all the while, start investing and making money.
D youself a favor, buy this book.......2002-07-21
I work in finace but really had no inderstanding of investments until i read this book. I found it very easy to follow and able to comprehend. Someone with a little finacial background probably would have been able to grasp it even better. Before you buy a single stock, bond, or mutual fund i highly recomend this book. I must say on the negative side that to truly understand finace you will need further reading, but this is a mandatory first book, and if all that is desired is a basic understanding of finace you could use this as your guide. I reccomend further reading though, for anyone working in finace or who plans on doing alot of investing.
More than you'd think.......1999-11-22
This book had so much more than I thought it would. I expected it to just explained investings like the stock market. But it explained everything from stocks, bonds, commodities futures and options, CD's, mutual funds, IRA's, mortgages, all types of insurance, creditcards, taxes and so much more. It gave sound strategies for all of these. It also explained simple things that you think you know but don't realy do. Like just saving money is a form of tax free investment. And so many other down to earth and sound advise that realy works. I'll always keep this book near by for reference. I strongly recomend this book to anyone who is trying to streach and invest his money.
