    Book Description

In the highly competitive global arena, companies that do not forge strategic international partnerships will be left behind. Today, the old joint venture has given way to a new, more entrepreneurial globalization process. Drawing from the examples of successful alliances like Ford/Mazda, Toshiba/Motorola, and Whirlpool/Philips, the authors offer a road map for managing these entrepreneurial relationships and argue that the greatest challenge for top executives lies not in initiating such partnerships, but in continuously developing organizational process innovations to manage a global network of dynamic alliances.

5 out of 5 stars Great insigh! The role of executives in alliance management.......2000-12-14

There are so many literatures about strategic alliance for practitioner and academics. But few book are really useful for us. My message is just BUY IT. This is nothing but Great! You know what? This research was completed in 1995 and 5year has passed ...then still shining and definitely the mile stone of strategic alliance and cooperative strategy field, I believe. They begin with defining the notion of new types of alliances form 90s and make it clear how drastically the competitive situation changed and what the source of competitive advantage is. That's the entrepreneurial role of top managemant and alliance manager. Competitive advantage of alliancing corporation doesn't come from poor analysis of resources, invisible assets or core competence. The point is relationship between partners. And the greatest point of this book is not only pointing out the importance of "relationship management" of alliance but also ...wow that's enough.. Just BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars Please read this book if you're serious about joint ventures.......1998-04-23

This is the best book I know of for understanding how to create and manage a successful strategic alliance.
There is so much redundant business literature out there on this subject that it is such a relief to finally have one good source.
The great thing about this book was that it forced me to think about how competitive strategy and analysis should be the driver of any well conceived strategic alliance.
I cannot think of another book that has so skillfully integrated these two highly related disciplines in such a practical way.

If anyone knows of anyother books or articles that these authors have written on this subject can you please let me know via email?

        Book Description

Cooperative Strategy Competing Successfully through Strategic Alliances Pierre Dussauge and Bernard Garrette HEC-School of Management, France In recent years, such corporate giants as Boeing, Toyota, Nestlé, Philips, United Airlines, IBM, and Intel have increasingly turned to alliances in order to develop new products and technologies, enter new markets, and globalize their activities. Indeed, no one firm, however dominant, can beat the competition entirely on its own. Unfortunately, managers have found collaboration to be a difficult, and sometimes dangerous, strategy; they have often over-estimated the benefits of alliances while overlooking their pitfalls which only materialize over time. C.K. Prahalad notes in the foreword that "managers need a robust framework for navigating through these uncharted waters" and that "this book provides an invaluable source of ideas and practical guidance in their search". As the dynamics of the business landscape change and alliances become an increasingly used competitive weapon, Cooperative Strategy will enable managers to plan, implement and make the best use of strategic alliances. "This book significantly advances the literature on strategic alliances. The case studies are fresh and the insights they provide are powerful. This book is a must read for both managers and academics interested in cooperative strategies." Nitin Nohria, Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School "This book provides an excellent guide to the new skills needed in an environment where more and more managers must learn to collaborate in order to enhance the competitive position of their company. No-one can become a global leader alone." John M. Stopford, Professor of International Business, London Business School "The framework developed by Pierre Dussauge and Bernard Garrette provides new and valuable insights on the strategic and managerial issues raised by alliances, in particular when these alliances bring together companies that compete in the same industries. Indeed, getting former competitors to collaborate efficiently is a difficult endeavour; this book offers managers guidelines that will make this challenge less daunting." Jean-Luc Lagardère, CEO, Matra-Hachette "This excellent book provides insightful clarity on the various types of alliances and successfully explores the issues, pitfalls and traps which ensnare the misinformed. The examples are rich and the perspective truly global. In particular, it disentangles the more creative forms of 'co-opetition' between rival firms, and lays out the longer term outcomes of alliances. It is pragmatic and practical, bristling with concrete suggestions on how to make alliances successful." Bruce Simpson, Principal, McKinsey&Company

        Book Description

Multinational Strategic Alliances Robert J. Mockler St. John's University, New York Strategic alliances are one of the most significant tools used today in business, especially by multinational firms. It is seen by business managers as the way to grow their organizations, especially when faced by downsizing and cutbacks. Such alliances have certainly been around for a long time, and surveys show that today the majority of large organizations use them. Almost all multinational firms have considered them. However, what has changed in today's working climate is their breadth and frequency of use, and their complexity. This highlights the need for a comprehensive guide such as this. Indeed, research shows that over 700f strategic alliances fail to deliver the results that were intended from the outset. What makes this book so useful is that it covers a broader range of alliances and has more current case studies than other books currently available. In addition, this comprehensive introduction to the subject provides a base of practical 'how-to-do-it' material and specific decision models covering determining strategic fit, negotiating strategic alliances and selecting compatible partners, formulating type and structure of alliances in light of operational fit, and making strategic alliances work. The book also explores other options instead of alliances such as wholly-owned multinational expansion and exporting, and has major sections on understanding and managing cross-cultural diversity, communications and leadership. Case studies include General Motors in China, British Airways and American Airlines, Airbus Industrie, a celluar phone venture in Tashkent, British Petroleum/Mobil in Europe, and Puyi-Briggs and Straton Engine Corporation in China. The systematic processes, contingency frameworks, best practices guidelines and situation analysis checklists given in this book make it an indispensable guide for managers and senior managers no matter what the size of their enterprise, especially those involved in international marketing, planning and management. It is also relevant to consultants and MBA and post-graduate students interested in the development, management and other strategic issues involved in multinational strategic alliances.

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Dated and narrow.......2007-03-26

This context in which this book might be useful is quite narrow. Despite its title, the paradigmatic deal it describes is a big multinational's expansion into a new geographic territory by teaming with a local partner. On the plus side, there are a couple of interesting stories and tips for this kind of deal. However, if you're, say, a tech start-up without the budget to wine and dine the prime ministers and presidents of various countries, the useful strategies described in the book will be few and far between.

And in any case you'll need patience to find those nuggets. While some business books suffer from being too chopped up into mini-chapters and checklists, this book is too long-winded to make its advice readily accessible if you're in a hurry. A particularly annoying feature is the repetition in each chapter of the same set of huge box-and-arrow "process" diagrams, without any modification from chapter to chapter. They were already too busy and vague to be of any help the first time around, much less the Nth.

The book is also quite dated. It was published pre-9/11, and written as if pre-Internet. Many of the opinions about dealing with various foreign groups (e.g., as to Japanese: don't trust 'em) also seem stuck in the 1980s. You're not missing much if you miss this book.

        Book Description

More than we ever anticipated, alliances among firms are changing the way business is conducted, particularly in the global, high-technology sector. The reasons are clear: companies must increasingly pool their capabilities to succeed in ever more complex and rapidly changing businesses. But the consequences for managers and for the economy have so far been underestimated. In this new book, Benjamin Gomes-Casseres presents the first in-depth account of the new world of business alliances and shows how collaboration has become part of the very fabric of modern competition.

Alliances, he argues, create new units of competition that do battle with one another and with traditional single firms. The flexible capabilities of these multi-firm constellations give them advantages over single firms in certain contexts, offsetting the advantage of a single firm's unified control. When managed effectively, alliances can strengthen a firm's competitive advantage and narrow the gap between leading firms and second-tier players. This often results in intensified rivalry, and the competition within an industry is transformed. Alliances often spread swiftly through an industry as firms jockey for advantage. Yet the very spread of alliances increases their costs and poses new limits on their use. Gomes-Casseres concludes that firms need to manage their constellations to enhance collaboration within their groups, while raising what he calls "barriers to collaboration" for rivals.

These ideas are developed and illustrated through original case studies of alliances among U.S., Japanese, and European firms in electronics and computers, including Xerox, IBM, and Fujitsu as well as other small and large companies. The book should be of interest to business academics, managers, and general readers concerned with contemporary capitalism.

Alliance Revolution is without doubt the best book out there dealing specifically with alliance networks and constellations. It should be helpful to anyone who has to wrestle with structuring or managing alliance networks, or cope with the impact of such networks on their industry or business. A serious, thoughtful book on a topic few executives can afford to ignore.

              Book Description

The eclectic paradigm has become the dominant theoretical basis in the study of international business, multinational corporations and internationalization over the last two decades. However, developments such as economic globalization and the subsequent growth of global and alliance capitalism have fundamentally affected the way in which MNC activities are undertaken and organized. The contributions to this volume evaluate the eclectic paradigm in the global economy and its validity as a theoretical basis to understand these developments. Contributions by leading scholars-incluing John Dunning, Stephen Gusinger, John Cantwell, Terutomo Ozawa, Gabriel Benito, Lars Oxelheim, Timothy Devinney and Anoop Madhok-examine the legacy of the eclectic paradigm.

This book systematically evaluates how the eclectic paradigm has survived the test of time, from a wide variety of perspectives. Contributors discuss whether and how the Ownership-Location-Internationalization (OLI) framework continues to be applicable to the perspective of their own particular analytical concerns. Has the explanatory usefulness of the paradigm diminished? To what extent is it a useful tool from the perspective of, for instance, trade theory, finance, evolutionary economics, resource based theory or strategic management? Can it be utilized to explain new developments in international business and economics? Do these require new ideas and concepts to be integrated within the eclectic paradigm? What are the new challenges to which international business theorizing must respond? This volume includes contributions from leading scholars from a variety of perspectives, disciplines and subject areas in international business, and represents the state-of-the-art in international business theory.
