    Book Description

Written in a clear, easy-to-follow style, Ethnography in Organizations evaluates the wide range of ethnographic research that has been--and continues to be--conducted in organizations. Beginning with the classic definition of bureaucracy and rational organization presented by Max Weber, author Helen B. Schwartzman analyzes three main paradigms--functional studies, structural analyses, and interpretive research. Using the Hawthorne Study as a starting point, this useful volume explores such topics as the roles and methods used by organizational ethnographers, the problems and prospects for conducting fieldwork in organizations, the "incorporation" of American life, and the role that everyday, but often overlooked, routines play in the production and reproduction of organizations, institutions, and society. Replete with vivid examples and illustrations taken from both public and private sector settings, Ethnography in Organizations is a must for anyone conducting research in an organizational setting.

      Book Description

This book offers new insights into the case study as a tool of educational research and suggests how it can be a prime research strategy for developing educational theory which illuminates policy and enhances practice.

Several different kinds of educational case studies are identified, namely: theory-seeking, theory-testing, story-telling, picture-drawing, and evaluative case study and there are substantial examples of each of these. The book develops the author's recent advocacy of fuzzy generalization.

Readers are taken through the various stages in conducting case study research, including a helpful account of data collection and data analysis methods. Each stage is underpinned by the concepts of trustworthiness and respect for persons. Structured, narrative and descriptive approaches to writing case study reports are also discussed and the value of conducting an audit is considered.

This will be a valuable text for students undertaking Masters and Doctorates in Education as well as staff in University departments of education and teachers carrying out small scale research projects.

        Book Description

This book extends the current discourse on the role of cultural knowledge in qualitative research, especially research conducted by women of color within their own community. Each author reports on her attempts to conceptualize herself as a researcher while simultaneously trying to honor her cultural connectedness and knowledge.

As women researchers analyzing the personal and professional contexts in which their research was conducted, the authors argue that their gender, race, religion, and status have played critical roles in their research agendas. They offer a female perspective, though not a feminist critique per se, for they believe that gender does play a significant role in their research efforts. Equally important, they explore the role that race has played in their research, whether as women of color or white women conducting research among people of color.

In reflecting on how their unique positionality allows them to understand relationships across many boundaries, the authors observe how, in most cases, because of their position as women and/or people of color, they have not had some of the traditional problems associated with access to multicultural sites. However, they have encountered other issues and they share how, as researchers, they met and resolved these issues for their particular settings. Each author also discusses how, in addressing these issues, she labored to meet the standards of academia, often at a personal cost.

This book challenges existing paradigms by questioning the assumption of objectivity in research. It is essential reading--informative, provocative, and engaging--for researchers and students in research methods, women's studies, critical theory, and cross-cultural studies.

          Book Description

The inaugural book in a new series sponsored by the Administrative Science Quarterly (ASQ) it is designed to focus and stimulate thinking on those areas of administrative science that have most profoundly shaped the development of organizational theory and behavior. In this volume, editor John Van Maanen selects and introduces the compendium of ASQ articles on qualitative research. Each article serves as an exemplar of well-written, substantively focused, and theoretically relevant qualitative research. As a group, the articles represent a broad range of research styles, methods, topics, and level of analysis. The studies are spread across four areas of research: organizational process, groups in organizations, organizational identity and change, and the societal and institutional environment. Organizations studied include factories, churches, universities, engineering groups, fisheries, voluntary organizations, basketball teams, pop music recording firms, and more. The authors of the works represent a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, including sociology, political science, communication, management studies, and history.

                  Book Description

This volume is a series of studies of schooling in its social context. The intent is to reframe the policy debate of the 1980s by examining schooling from this viewpoint. The first section focuses on becoming and being a teacher. The second section focuses on the school and the district, and the implementation of change. The third part attempts to establish how effectiveness is defined and operationalized in practice. The final section concerns the transition to adulthood and explores the ways young workers learn on the job.

                    Book Description

Gaining a better understanding of the way organizations work through the study of the symbols connected to them is the subject of Studying Organizational Symbolism. Michael Owen Jones briefly discusses the most obvious symbolic aspects of organizations--corporate logos, office sizes, use of titles--but focuses on the less obvious but crucial aspect of expressive forms of symbolism--storytelling, institutional jargon, and workplace personalization, among others. Jones carefully defines organizational symbolism and then explains the various methodologies that assist the researcher in documenting it. Finally, he examines the symbolism inherent in doing research on organizations. Researchers interested in any facet of organizational studies will find Studying Organizational Symbolism to be a useful and necessary guide.

                      Description:
Introduction: The aim with this study was to deepen the understanding of contextual aspects in child psychiatric clinical work with boys displaying antisocial behaviour. Method: An explorative, qualitative approach, based on team narrations of authentic cases, was used. Results: The results indicate that clinicians consider a multitude of case characteristics when working with this heterogeneous group of boys. The assessment and treatment planning procedure appeared to be intertwined. The teams were unspecific regarding how needs were translated into treatment plans. The behaviour of a boy was discussed to sometimes evoke feelings of fear among parents and clinicians, thus alerting the need for instant interventions. Furthermore, the teams described a lack of consent and collaboration with other agencies. Unclear responsibilities sometimes seemed to affect the possibility to intervene properly. Conclusions: The findings of this study are discussed in relation to evidence-based practices and illustrate how complicated the management of boys with antisocial behaviour can be.

                      Book Description

Noted tax economist Frederick C. Stocker has observed that the property tax "resembles a structure designed by a mad architect, erected on a shaky foundation by an incompetent builder, and made worse by the well-intentioned repair work of hordes of amateur tinkerers." While that may still be a popular view, Glenn Fisher suggests that the actual history of this much-maligned tax should make us less inclined to such easy ridicule.

The frequent scapegoat of rebellious taxpayers, yet essential for the functioning of modern local governments, the property tax has a long and controversial history. Fisher's richly detailed account reveals the fundamental difficulties confronting all past attempts at designing an equitable and efficient system of property taxation during the past two centuries.

The general property tax--a locally administered tax ostensibly levied at equal rates on all wealth--evolved out of the struggle for political and economic equality in the early American republic. It was, as Fisher shows, consistent with Jacksonian democratic principles that kept the tax power decentralized, limited, and close to home, while producing sufficient revenue to support state and local government even in thinly populated frontier states.

But as new states and their constitutions emerged throughout the nineteenth century, many citizens criticized the Jacksonian approach for its inconsistencies and inequities. Advocating principles long-associated with Alexander Hamilton and the Federalists, these critics called for uniform taxes centrally administered by professional bureaucracies. This tension between Jacksonian and Hamiltonian principles is an integral part of Fisher's story and remains unresolved as our local governments continue to cope with the conflict between their revenue needs and the desire for equitable taxation.

Drawing upon economic, legal, political, and public administration perspectives, Fisher has fashioned an illuminating chronicle of popular government and intergovernmental relations (federal, state, and local) that will be of equal interest to scholars, students, local governments, and reform-minded taxpayers.

This book is part of the Studies in Government and Public Policy series.
