Customer Reviews:
One of the best Batman crossover titles.......2007-07-25
I'm a fan of both Batman and Predator. The plot is that a Predator is out hunting in Gotham and Batman must do everything he can to stop it. The art is fantastic and the words are well written. Dave Gibbons did a great job with combining these two characters. I've read the other two a long time ago, but this one is my favorite Batman vs crossover story. Once I get Part II and III, reviews for those will be coming up.
Perfect combination of Batman and Predator.......2007-03-26
This is a very good comic book. If anyone has seen any of the Predator
movies, the one in this story matches that description perfectly. He
kills anyone that might even seem like a threat, and does it in a very
gruesome way. Batman shows that he is only human, and needs some help to
defeat the Predator. I recommend this book to any comic fan, but watch
for Bats vs. Pred 3, it sucks action wise compared to this one. I know,
because I read #3 first, and thought it was decent until I read #1.
Not as good as Hush, but still great!.......2006-07-17
I am a big fan of both Batman and Predator, so as soon as I heard about this, I knew I had to get it. And guess what? IT WAS GREAT! A bit too bloody for my taste, but still very good! Now, if you'll excuse me, I hear purring outside (Hint, hint)... Probably just my cat... better go let him in...
AWSOME.......2005-06-20
This has all the elements of a good predator movie and a good batman comic. A DEFINITE SUCCESSFUL blending of the two. It's almost like a Predator writer and a Batman writer got together one night and played make believe and then wrote it all down. LOL! Those writers, such kids at heart! LOL! If you like Batman you'll like this. If you like the Predator, then you'll like this. If you like them both, then this will be like CRACK to you. LOL :-)
The Dark Knight vs the Intergalatic Headhunter.......2002-04-13
I could sum up this crossover comic in one word, intense. Brutally gorey, incredible story, and great art work makes this a classic in the realm of Comic books.
As the title implies this is Batman vs Predator, and basically in the beggining Batman does not stand a chance. The Predator seeks out prize fighters via through TV. He watches the TV and picks up the champs or powerful political figures for his victims. The exception being Batman. In the end it's up to Batman and his intelect, as well as fighting skills to take out one of the most dangerouse creatures in the universe.
If you are comic book fan, this is a must buy.

Worth it for "Blades" alone, an example of how to do Batman.......1999-07-30
I've read all of the stories in this Batman TPB, and while the Bat-Mite and Poison Ivy tales are OK, the first tale, "Blades" by Robinson and Sale, is spectacular. If you're a fan of "Starman" or anything else by Robinson, buy this quick. If you like great storytelling and great art by Sale, buy this quick!
Kick Butt!.......1999-01-04
I especially liked the story with Bat-Mite! HE is so cute and funny. "Hothouse" is a little confusing though, but I think I pretty mush got it down.

Chip Kidd: Book One: Work: 1986-2006 (Chip Kidd)

When the DC Comics character Batman got his own television series in 1966, Batman merchandising took off. A market was developed not only for little Caped Crusader suits and toy Batmobiles, but for Batman kiddie blankets, Batman nursery wallpaper, and so on down a slippery slope of mostly plastic kitsch to Batman combs, pogo sticks and tortilla chips. With Tim Burton's 1990s movie blockbusters, Hollywood marketing spin revived the genre. Book designer Chip Kidd, whose earliest memory of this commerce-driven Batman fetish is a nightlight that soothed his four-year-old mind, has actually collected vast quantities of such junk, and has put it all together in a catalog of shameless pop culture. Artfully photographed by Geoff Spear, this document casts light upon a dark and awesome figure--advertising.
Book Description
The Batman mythology has fired the American imagination since 1939. Its ever-growing popularity right up until today has spawned thousands of toys, gadgets, plastic figurines, night-lights, wind-up toys, wristwatches, and many other collectibles. Drawing upon the author's own personal collection, as well as those of such notable fans as Andy Warhol and the DC Comics archives, Batman Collected brings these memorabilia to life. Perfect for the comic lover, here is a remarkable wealth of rare, never-before-photographed Batman treasures. Extreme close-up photography and dramatic chiaroscuro lighting give these materials a magnificent aura of dark menace that brilliantly reflects the Batman ethos.
New to this remarkable paperback edition are 16 brand-new pages of fresh material not included in the original 1996 hardcover, including newly issued collectibles as well as obscure, recently discovered items. Featuring five lavish gatefolds among its colorful pages, Batman Collected is a treasure trove of fascinating history and adventurous graphic design that no true Batman fan can afford to be without.

Beyond the Mego dolls (oops -- I mean action figures) ...........2005-05-10
Chip Kidd, who also wrote a neat "Batman Animated" coffeetable book on the well-loved and critically acclaimed "Batman: The Animated Series" that debuted in 1992, turns here to the hobby (and serious business, for some) of collecting.
He includes his own childhood remembrances of Bat-items, as well as wonderfully quirky photography. This book, full-color throughout, is not a "guide" to the collectibles, as it does not include price values or manufacturers (it does give the year and dimensions for each piece pictured). And it's by no means all-inclusive (hey, not even a third of the "Animated Series" merchandise I own was in there!). Plus, there is an editorial comment on the Andy Warhol Batman piece that's got a bit of an attitude.
But all in all, it's a neat celebration of the Bat-phenomenon -- and the Bat-collector, who in our modern times has become quite well-known, too.
Nifty as heck.......2001-11-17
Chip Kidd loves Batman and it shows on each and every page of this gasp-inspiring book. If you're like me and and grew up with unrequited desire for each and every Batman-related product available, these pictures are almost as good as having the real items.
Text is sparse, but entertaining. And if you have the hardcover version of this book, you'll want this new edition as well for the new material included.
Kidd's book a treasure.......1999-04-15
As the editor of the Batman Toy and Collectibles Price Guide located at http://www.btcpg.com I can assure Batman toy collectors that this book is wonderful. It's pages are a bit too filled with tight shots of close ups of Batman pieces instead of the whole item, but then that's why MY publication exists.
GREAT EXPECIALLY IF U LIKE THE GOLDEN AGE.......1999-04-11
I LIKE THE BOOK BECAUSE IT HAS GREAT PICS I MEAN THINK THE BOOK SAID THAT IT HAD 250 SOMETING PICS AND THE SUMMARY IS GOOD IT IS A MUST FOR ALL BATMAN FANS
Excellent pictures!! A must for Batman toy collectors!!.......1997-01-01

We here at the BT&CPG use this book whenever we do our DETAILED listings, as the full color pictures are ALMOST like having the Batman toy in front of us! Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Superb and unique coffee-table book on chess.......2005-03-12
Most chess books deal with technique or analyses of the world's greatest games. This, on the other hand, is a rare treat: a large-sized "coffee table" book filled with hundreds of color photos and art-work reproductions spanning the history of chess, or at least up to 1975, which is when The World of Chess came out. Written at the height of the game's popularity in the U.S. thanks to Bobby Fischer's dramatic win over Boris Spassky, the book would soon be relegated to discount-bin status when the eccentric champion refused to defend his title, and American interest in chess withered. But for a few years it was all glory, and chess-players were almost up there with sports superstars. (Can you believe that for a brief time chess matches were broadcast on TV, with play-by-play commentary? This book shows pictures of one such event.)
The World of Chess starts with the origin and history of the game, from the earliest known days in India, through chess' spread to Europe as eastern (Muslim) culture met west through the Moorish conquest of Spain. There are fascinating anecdotes, such as how early devotees of the game risked their lives. (Chess ran afoul of Muslim authorities because of Islam's prohibition of representational images, and it ran afoul of Western authorities because early on it was a gambling game.) There's a story about how a victory in one chess game led King Ferdinand of Spain to finance Columbus' first voyage, but I rather doubt the tale, because the game that's attached looks too much like a chess problem rather than a plausible position (although stranger things have happened, I guess). The book moves to "modern" chess history--modern being Philidor and beyond. Games were now recorded and studied, theories evolved, romantic speculative sacrafices gave way to quiet positional understanding, and chess became more than a game of fast tactics and quick kills (except in big city parks, where chess hustlers still shake down their victims this way). The book discusses the creation of the "Staunton" design of chessmen (not actually designed by Staunton, by the way) and continues through the 20th century with the Hypermodern Revolution and the rise of the Soviets, and ends with the famous Fischer-Spassky duel in Iceland in 1972. There are also chapters where authors Anthony Saidy and Norman Lessing recount personal stories of their own chessic lives. Saidy (b. 1937) is an International Master; Lessing a top-notch coffeehouse player who once battled, and lost to, then-world champion Alexander Alekhine in an informal game for a ten dollar wager. It was an astronomical amount of money at the height of the Depression. I wonder what his wife said.
The only slight flaw in the book is the excessive fawning over Fischer. But Fischer-mania was sweeping the country, so this is not surprising. Since then the former champ's behavior, always prickly, has become even more bizarre, damaging chess in the process, reinforcing the belief that the game is played mainly by strange, misanthropic types. I wonder if Saidy, who used to be good friends with Fischer, is in touch with the former world champ today. One interesting recent discovery I made: a game on page 231 between Fischer and Benko contains a brilliant move that Saidy says is unsurpassed for originality. Yet there's a student game by the young Tal (whom Fischer studied closely) in 1949 against Leonov in Riga that contains exactly the same move in virtually the same circumstances--and it's move 19 both times! Brilliant yes, but perhaps not as original as Saidy believed. (It's amazing what even a patzer like me can learn in this modern age of the Internet and near-infinite databases.)
Apart from some apologist explanations for Fischer's behavior and a little white-washing of the Iceland match, this is an excellent book, one that went out of print all too soon and will never be issued again, since it's dated now. There are many classic games and excerpts from games, including some rare ones not likely to be found in standard chess databases. (Some are so old we don't even know who played them.) One caution: the games are presented in "descriptive" notion (P-QB4, N-KB3) rather than algebraic (c4, Nf6). This doesn't bother me, but I know people who simply refuse to read any descriptive notation chess book--their loss. I strongly recommend springing for a new or like-new copy and paying the extra bucks rather than ordering one in less good condition: this is the kind of book you don't want a mark on. It's very beautiful and well-made. Someone clearly thought chess had the potential for big returns and was not afraid to put out a very classy, elegant book. Bravo.

Book Description
This book explores Satyajit Ray's films, and The Chess Players in particular, in the context of discourses of labor in colonial and postcolonial conditions. Starting from Daniel Defoe and moving through history, short story and film to the present, Dube widens her analysis with comparisons in which Indian films are situated alongside Hollywood and other films, and interweaves historical and cultural debates within film theory.
