Some Wheat, Mostly Chaff.......2006-07-07
The "Annual Editions" series consists of many different volumes on varied subjects from business ethics to physical anthropology. Each volume is compiled and edited by a noted expert in the relevant field, normally a prominant academic, in this case Dr. John Richardson of Pepperdine University. The book is a collected group of articles from various sources, grouped by theme with brief commentaries preceding each section. A constant annoyance is the different formatting of every article.
Overall, I found this volume wanting (note that there are other editions of "Annual Editions: Business Ethics" available from Amazon some of which are older, some of which are more recent) and sometimes biased to the left politically, with frequent sources like "The Humanist," "Mother Jones," etc. I am all in favor of reading these pieces, but would have preferred more balance. Perhaps the best single example of the left-leaning bias is found on page 30 in an article by Anne-Marie Cusac which was originally printed in "The Progressive." Her bias is very obvious, as seen in this quote from the second paragraph: "...millions of workers remain unrepresented and at the mercy of their employers. These conditions are likely to get worse as the Bush Administration stacks the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB)." I happen to be a member of a union, and while I appreciate the benefits of union membership, Ms. Wagner presents a very unbalanced view of the benefits of union membership (and the status of the Wagner Act of 1935) which essentially extols socialism. Ms. Wagner actually makes many good points, but loses credibility by making her underlying agenda known. This is a problem throughout this book, though at least one professor admits candidly that many academics tend to lean toward socialist politics. (I enjoyed that article and his candor: I did not agree with all his points, but appreciated his integrity.)
There are many articles that fail to mentally stimulate the reader herein, but there are also some excellent pieces. On page 19, Amie Devero has an excellent article (from "M World") extolling values based organizations, citing excellent examples like Norstan. Page 35 has an extremely well-done piece by Karen Olsson (from "Mother Jones") called "Up Against Wal-Mart." While I normally find material from "Mother Jones" to be biased, this article is a rational, if justifiably scathing, indictment of the world's largest retailer. All management students should read this article. The otherwise good article on employee theft (page 40) by William Kehoe tends to get a bit tangential when he asserts that speaking out against the company and demotivating employees causes them to do a less efficient job and thus robs the company of resources, which seems to be in direct conflict with employee rights to organize and free speech espoused elsewhere in the book. The remainder of Kehoe's article, however, is excellent, especially his discussion of deontological and teleological theories. His discussion of applying the "golden rule" beginning on page 41 is superior.
There is a great article on page 71 by Nelson Schwartz on the outsourcing of white-collar America that everyone in the business world should read, followed immediately on a superb article (originally published in "Business Week") on whistleblowers with emphasis on the Enron debacle. Continuing on the theme is an article by Sharie Brown on the benefits of whistleblowers (from "M World") in which she correctly asserts: "It's actually in a company's best interests to encourage employee whistleblowers who can uncover problems before they become fodder for front-page news."
Page 99 has a typical article on ethical philosophy ("Ethical Compass" by Tim Hatcher,) which while well intentioned gets bogged down in doublespeak about things such as "cross-cultural adaptation," and recommends the dreaded and despised role-playing method of learning, loathed by those in industry far and wide. (If you want to turn off an audience in industry as fast as possible, start a role-playing exercise. This is especially true with groups of highly technical, type A people.) Socialism rears its ugly head again on page 101 with the quote from a representative of the Institute of Coherence and Emergence (who?) to the effect that the government needs to police business ethics. (Governments legislate minimal legal rules; boards of directors and managers ensure ethics in a capitalist society.) This leads up to a section lionizing Kofi Annan and the UN for clear moral guidance with the signing of the "Global Compact," all after an endorsement of ISO 9000. As a former ISO 9000 compliance manager in the chemical industry, I will tell you that the true benefits of ISO 9000 are extremely debatable, and the idea of the UN and Annan in particular being hailed as bastions of ethics are, of course, laughable. Page 107 has an interesting, though uncompelling, article by Homer Johnson (with assistance from Julie Dunkle Zipperer and Beverly Spangler) on social audits and social investing.
Page 153 has an article on ethical marketing on the Internet that contains some good analysis, but also contains some of the worst diagrams I have ever seen. Page 158 takes another hack at the ethics of marketing with an article about the legal consequences of "truth in puffery" vis-a-vis contemporary marketing practices. "The Selling of Breast Cancer" on page 160 is an excellent expose of using a dread disease to increase market share, and the moral consequences of doing so. My favorite part is the promotion by Eureka of their WhirlWind LiteSpeed vacuum cleaner with a pink ribbon. The connection? A Eureka spokeswoman explains: "Because so many women head households, breast cancer affects a lot of people who own vacuum cleaners." Ponder that, please. I bet breast cancer affects people who own can openers, eyelash curlers, and Ronco In-shell egg scramblers, too.
Overall there is some good information in this volume. Unfortunately, you have to sort through a lot of chaff to find the wheat.

Concise Coverrage of Bond Valuation.......2005-11-09
The author does a great job of covering the basics and bond trading and valuation in a concise and very readable format. There are many long winded books on fixed income that cover these topics exhaustively, but this is the book I find myself returning to when I need an accurate answer quickly.
Thanks Dragomir.......2004-02-05
Finding a single source which contains a clear explanation of all the bond conventions is very difficult. When you need this
book, you really need this book. Thanks Dragomir.
Book Description
Hailed as an indispensable resource (Booklist), this guide to business success on foreign ground features the latest facts and figures, including the changes in trade status with China and Vietnam
Free trade is thriving worldwide--which means good business for American businesses. But when Americans recoil at kisses on the cheek from a Brazilian or invite an Egyptian to lunch during the month of Ramadan, they face an undeniable fact: successful trade abroad demands a firm grasp of not only economic, but political and social forces. Thoroughly revised and updated, this guide gives global deal-makers the insights to avoid cultural gaffes and forge strong alliances.
Here are candid snapshots of the USA's top trading partners, including an all-new chapter on Vietnam. Whether their target country is China (including Hong Kong), Germany, or Mexico, readers will get the lowdown on business prospects, including population growth, age breakdown, per capita income, marketing regulations, and overall risk rating. They'll also learn crucial cultural factors, including negotiating style, sanctioned topics of conversation, perceptions of time and punctuality, holidays, and standard work hours. And from business travelers who've been there, they'll get telling notes on dressing and behaving for success, plus notorious faux paus.
Complete with passport and visa requirements, samples of key documents, and helpful websites, DUN & BRADSTREET'S GUIDE TO DOING BUSINESS AROUND THE WORLD holds the keys to international trading with skill and confidence.

Not up to the authors' prior standard.......2002-03-01
When I saw the authors were the authors of "Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands" I immediately bought this book. It was disappointing, because the authors have shown they can write good books.
The biggest problem is with keeping current. (The authors allude to this issue in their preface.) This book was based on 1999 material and published in 2001. There's a lot of material that has very limited shelf-life, such as a list of government officials in Italy. They publish a list of national holidays for each country, listing both date and day of the week. (Where was their editor?) Obviously that information is only good for one particular year.
Treatment is superficial in many aspects. Under "currency" they only state the name of the currency, with no reference to pegging or exchange rate volatility. Under "Intellectual Property Rights" they discuss the treaties the country has signed. You would never learn there is an intellectual property issue in China from reading this book, because China has signed all pertinent treaties.
Their treatment of cultural issues is not structured. They list five cultural tips per country. These tend to focus on manners issues such as being (or not being) on time. I'm more attune to the method that Geert Hofstede uses in his books where he defines a cultural trait, discusses its implications, and then states how strong that cultural trait is in the country. For example, Hofstede introduces "power distance" as a measure of hierarchy and respect for authority. He then discusses implications for the decision making and negotiation processes. Finally, he gives the scores for each country, leaving the reader to draw conclusions. The authors of this book do discuss one cultural trait for all countries, defined as "Time." To them it means attitudes toward promptness. There is no discussion of the inverse relationship between attention to promptness and flexibility in scheduling, which is a hugely important issue in buying or selling.
Finally, and this is a personal issue because I am a purchasing consultant and educator, there is a heavy emphasis on selling in other countries but almost no attention to buying there. They could have given GSP-status for imports into the US, for example.
I recommend spending your money elswhere. Buy "Kiss, Bow" to learn about manners issues. Get "Culturegrams" to get annually updated information on history and geography. If you really want to study a country it will take more depth and more current material than this book carries.
An Incomparable Source of Information and Commentary.......2000-11-16
Here is the best single-source I have come across thus far which provides information about trade opportunities, tariffs, risk factors, negotiating styles, investment climate, protocol, and cultural tips. (I refer to the revised and expanded version.) The authors discuss 40 countries (in alphabetical order, from Argentina to Venezuela), then provide five appendices: Contracts and Websites, Documents Used in International Trade, Abbreviations of International Organizations, Corruption & Bribery Index, and Conversion Factors. I am now convinced that almost every company throughout the world will eventually become involved, directly or indirectly, with e-business. Here is a comprehensive guide which contains invaluable information and hard-headed recommendations based on real-world experience. Other volumes are now available which provide more information about a single county (eg Stuttard's superb The New Silk Road whose subject is China) but none, to my knowledge, which is comparable in terms of global coverage.
Excellent resource for U. S. exporters of all sizes........1998-09-24
This book provides valuable information on the social, political, economic and marketing aspects of the 40 major trading partners (countries) of the United States. It rates the credit worthiness of each country based upon its trade and monetary policies, climate for foreign investment, import duties and taxes, political climate, and attitude towards protection of intellectual property rights. It does an excellent job of addressing the cultural aspects of doing business abroad. Our staff uses it often as a resource for conducting international market research and working with consulting clients. Recommended for purchase by John R. Jagoe, Director, Export Institute

Book Description
International taxation is evolving in response to globalization, capital mobility, and the increased trade in services, and introduces international tax practitioner, student and researcher to the theory, practice, and international examples of the changing landscape.
Models of tax competition in a flat and connected world are very different than those necessary to ensure compliance in a world dominated by cross-border flows of goods and repatriation of profits. Taxes on consumption, e-commerce, and services are looming innovations in future of international taxation. Tax coordination and standardization are immense challenges in a world in which the movement of value is increasingly subtle and hard to detect. And as corporations and individuals become more sophisticated in the internationalization of flows of capital, our models must become more sophisticated in their scope and inclusion.
In the era when trade was dominated by the exchange of manufactured goods, international taxation was designed to protect domestic industries, create tax revenue, prevent evasion, and promote compliance. The traditional toolbox of customs duties, tariffs, and taxes on repatriated profits must be augmented as the movement of goods across borders represents a much smaller fraction of trade and as international taxation policy is increasingly used to attract foreign corporations rather than discourage branch offices. International taxation models that can better tax services, track international flows of capital, and allow a nation to compete in a world market for capital formation are the tools of the modern tax practitioner.
International tax policy is now viewed as an integral part of economic policy. This approach is bound to accelerate as the world becomes increasingly flat and better connected. Economic progress is more and more influenced by the movement of services and information, movements that are no longer through ports but through fiber optic lines.
This book contributes to the growing literature on international taxation by bringing together theory and experience, current practices and innovation, and our current understanding of some of the challenges now facing and arguably frustrating current international taxation policy. The book will create new avenues of research for scholars, a new awareness for students of International Taxation, and new possibilities for international tax practitioners. The models and examples presented here suggest that there are serious problems with measurability of flows of services and information, and points to an increasingly need for greater harmonization of international taxation, perhaps through coordinated consumption-tax oriented approaches.
* Describe the rapidly evolving role of International Taxation in a globalizing information economy
* Present theoretical models that act as the basis for successful international tax competition
* Describe the experiences and innovations of representative internationalized countries
* Discuss some new approaches to International Taxation
* Makes the case for new models of international taxation in an increasingly global information world
