Book Description
Here is a new entry from the legendary series that has already been published in 11 languages. After a four-year wait, Alita is back, making her way through an apocalyptic universe. Picking up from the middle of the previous book, Angel's Ascension, our heroine encounters a new group of bizarre characters and revisits many of her old friends and foes. Reconstructed by Doc Ido, a talented cyborg physician, Alita has lost all memory of her former life. But there's one thing her body has not forgotten - it still instinctively recalls the Panzer Kunst, the most powerful cyborg fighting technique ever known. Bounty hunter, singer, killer: as the secrets of Alita's past unfold, every day is a struggle for survival, and her fighting talents are stretched to the limit. Can Alita alone stop the war chaos between the robotic denizens of the M.I.B. bureau and the Tipharians?
Customer Reviews:
Crappy rehash without the heart of the original.......2005-07-11
I was so excited when I picked this up. Too bad it is a sub-par "what if" story. The art is kind of soulless compared to the compelling original, and the characters and motivations seem flat and cliched. Nothing like the innovative Battle Angel I know and love.
A tale of karma, human nature, and serious butt-kicking . . .......2004-11-09
This series picks up more or less half-way through the final volume of "Battle Angel Alita" (Angel's Ascension) as released in the United States by VIZ, just after Alita has been blown to smithereens by a diabolical booby trap engineered by that demonic genius, Professor Desty Nova.
This change in the originally presented storyline is neat because in my view, at least, though some interesting issues were dealt with in the remainder of "Angel's Ascension", the ending was a bit to "pat" for my taste, particularly in comparison with the deeply philosophical and convoluted storyline that threads the rest of the story together.
In this extended storyline, Alita is re-born into a Tiphares driven mad by Professor Nova's broadcast revelation of the Secret of Tiphares. (If you don't know it, I'm not gonna tell you. Read the original series, it's fascinating!) The city has split into at least three warring factions; the adult citizens of Tiphares, the children of the city, and the automated machinery of the Tiphares M.I.B., which is trying desperately to clamp the lid back down on it's shocking secret.
Settling this mad civil war proves to be only the first of a new series of challenges awaiting Alita as she sets out on her new life, with Professor Nova and some seriously strange copies of herself as companions. Political machinations are subsequently revealed that make Machiavelli look like a pre-schooler.
Yes, there is a lot of violence, but one can easily read between the blood and gore, picking out Yukito Kishiro's nuggets of psychological, para-psychological and philosophical exploration, as the central characters continue their quest to find out what truly makes a human being human.
She's Back - And Twice As Bad!!!.......2004-05-16
Nova, the villainous researcher who spent much of the first Alita series foiling the efforts of the beautiful cyborg is back. This time with a different agenda. Equipped with the barest fragments of Alita's brain he remakes her, this time with an even better artificial body, the Imaginos. Alita awakens to a world in chaos - Nova has reveled that citizens of Tiphares have had their brains replaced with chips, and the overprotective guardian machines turn on the populace to conceal the secret.
Still created and drawn by Yukito Kishiro, this new series has all that magic of its predecessor. Battle Angel Alita remains a fine example of Manga that uses are to expand the imagination at the same time it entertains. For all the spellbinding action and violence, the driving factors behind the series remains the intangibles that separate human from non-human, and life from imitation.
For all that Alita is 'made' rather than born, she is clearly more human than the chip-brained adults of Tiphares, who see themselves as the perfection of the species. In the beginnings of a complex plot that pits adults against their children, Alita once again displays both her power and her compassion, We are also granted glimpses of Alita's origins - the promises of explanations that were never forthcoming in the initial series.
In a world where sequels are cheap and easy, it's nice to see the effort Kishiro and VIZ publishing have put together to create something even better than its origins. You won't be disappointed.
increased violence, decreased story content.......2004-03-26
Yup - this new volume of Battle Angel is more violent than anything, and doesn't really explain all the mechanics of just how Alita came to be in Tiphares, and what is going on.
But given that Alita herself only just became conscious of being on Tiphares, of the city itself being strewn into chaos, should the reader really expect all the explanations to come in one volume? The Battle Angel world is unfathomably large and complex, and I think it is appropriate that Mr. Kishiro has held off on these details until Alita & co's arrival in Ketheres in Volume 3.
Readers who find this and the second volume a bit lacking in storyline will be duly rewarded for sticking in there at volume 3 - as Mr. Kishiro opens up a whole new universe full of interplanetary politics, class disparity and a bit of political commentary on current day events, if one looks hard enough.
LOVIN' IT!!! :-).......2004-01-04
Okay, I was a little suprised when I saw the backwards Manga-Style, but it is still the Angel I know and love! Alita is back after being killed by Nova. She awakens in Tiphares in Nova's lab. Tiphares is in Chaos because Nova exposed the "Secret of the Tiphareans" ( I can't tell you that now!) MIB robots are running AMOK, killing all the human survivors in Tiphares. Well, I've gone too far now! Alita will always have a place in my heart!! This was a GREAT series. Angel reborn also gives you a look at alita's past on Mars.
Enjoy this one!!

Book Description
In this hilarious and dead-on accurate guide to the world of men and dogs, were’re introduced to the concept of Pack Status Personality. In addition to the totally misunderstood Alphas, we meet Betas, Leglifters, Junkyard Dogs, Perpetual Puppies, and more. We learn where they live and work, what they drive, and how they dress, all based on the “preinstalled operating system” that comes with each PSP. Far from the expected male-bashing, this outrageously funny book even explains why home improvement projects can cause male impotence! If you’re a woman and have a discernable pulse, YOU NEED THIS BOOK. If you’re a guy, ignore the author’s warnings and read it anyhow…

Men and dogs: Why we love them both and how alike they really are........2007-04-04
This book simply ROCKS. It is a book all women above the age of 18 should read. As women, we all understand on some level the reason we are attracted to some men and not to others. This book simply puts those thoughts into a neat, sensible and funny theory about men and their pack order.
Reading this book, I found myself thinking of all of the men that I have known and dated, and all of them fit one of the author's pack status personalities. The mix of biology, humor and good relationship advice kept me glued to this book for hours.
This book isn't about getting laid quicker, or figuring out the male psyche. It does, however, give a new and interesting perspective on why men behave they do and how we interact with them. Alpha males aren't the only pack order personalities out there. Some men are great husbands and others are great lovers. There are ancient and instinctive reasons for this, and I loved reading about the biology behind love and attraction.
Funniest book I've read in quite a while!.......2007-03-31
Whether you're looking for the right man or already found one this is a great read - It is wickedly funny & interesting at the same time. Definitely worth the price. Warning: If you lend it to someone you won't get it back :)
A good FUN read, and you'll understand men!.......2007-03-28
First I've got to admit I'm one of those "Y" types the author advises not to read this book. But then, being your basic "Y" type, I don't follow directions all that well, so I read it. That was partly in self-defense, after listening to Patricia laugh so much while she read it, and then announcing I'm a sentinel.
This book is a really fun read. It is written in a humorous, almost conversational, style that both made me laugh and made it difficult to put down. Whether you agree with what the author says or not, if you simply like to read for the sheer pleasure of the written word, this is a book for you.
It is fun, and may be partly tongue-in-cheek, but the premise makes sense; men, like dogs and their ancestors the wolves, are pack hunting predators. There must be organization and positions within the pack -- different jobs -- to make the hunt successful. This may not be so crucial in the modern world, but we spent a few hundred thousand years needing to hunt to survive. The characteristics that make up the positions are as deep in our nature as the "flight or fight" response or the need for food and shelter.
Here are a few things you'll learn: guys who say they are Alpha almost always aren't; why the neighbors always say "but he was such a nice, quiet guy"; how to recognize perpetual puppies, retrievers and junkyard dogs by their wardrobe and habitat, and why too much testosterone is not a Good Thing.
For us guys, this book offers the perfect alibi; "I can't help it, it's in my genes." For women, this book is like an Audubon Society Field Guide; yes, you can recognize a guy's PSP after you read this book.
You can save the chapter on biochemistry until the end but don't skip it entirely. I've check some of the information about genes and biochemistry on the Internet, and while the author assures us she didn't do any research, everything I checked is right. Maybe Francis Crick was right; psychologists of the future will be biochemists.
Oh, and buy it from Amazon; you can get free shipping! I bought it from the publisher and it cost $8.50 more!
Now, who's going to write the book to help us understand women?
EXTRA! EXTRA! A "MUST READ" TWO THUMBS UP!.......2007-03-24
OK, so it was never my intention to read this book. Let's face it, in the forward the author actually tells us men not to read the book. Being smarter than the average bear I knew this was a sneaky way to get us men to READ THE BOOK and normally I wouldn't have fallen for it(obviously, the author has some devilishly smart advisers helping her with this). But my wife had purchased the book and I needed to implement my own Bush Doctrine (For you liberals out there that means I needed to read the book before my wife did and put it into action against me).
It turns out this is a great book. I've read it 3 times now. The first time I read it I laughed so hard and so often I almost peed my pants. I ended up reading the second half of the book in the washroom just in case. Half way thru the book the first time I knew I would need to read it again because all my laughing was getting in the way of my note taking. Seriously, if my wife was going to read this stuff I needed to bone up on my knowledge.
This author is not only smart as hell and a great researcher, she's informed and funny too. I'm not going to get into all the terminology she uses (Retrievers can do that).....but she's bang on right and she knows it.
So my recommendation is going to be for everyone to purchase this book and actually read it. And I mean everyone.....8 to 80, blind, drunk or crazy......if you can read you need to own this book.
Thank you very much and have a nice day.
My recommendation: Read this book!.......2007-03-18
The author takes a very funny tongue-in-cheek approach to understanding why men are the way they are. The first third of the book provides an easy to understand and eye-opening overview of the genetic and brain chemistry factors that influence male behavior. The notion here is that men are predisposed or "hard-wired" to act in certain ways and that no amount of conditioning is going to change that underlying predisposition.
The second two-thirds of the book provides what is essentially a field guide to men, the heuristic for which is the concept of "Pack Status Personality" (PSP). The PSP framework borrows concepts and terminology from the worlds of dog breeding and wolf research and applies them to men, which makes learning about what makes men tick understandable and fun. Each PSP is described in terms of its brain chemistry, dominant personality traits, behaviors, grooming, and sex habits, all in an effort to identify the qualities that would make its constituent men a good mate for the right woman.
I recommend this book without reservation for women who have yet to find their ideal mate - as well as for women to understand better the mates they have already found. I also recommend it for us men (yup, and I am a Retriever) who would like a very entertaining and testosterone-free way of understanding the men who influence the world in which we live. Finally, I will give a copy of this book to my daughter when she reaches the age at which men become a serious preoccupation and pursuit, and I suggest everyone else do so as well.

Disrespect!!.......2007-09-21
How disrespectful. What a disgrace to women! What a waste of time, energy, space, and love! If anyone thinks this is reasonable, may God have mercy on you. The main reson men don't understand women, is women lie about themselves, to themselves, and to their husbands! I hope and pray not one more copy is sold! Please women, be a helpmeet, not a hinderance! Sincerely,
a woman of God!
This book is full of blank pages.......2007-02-16
Literally. I think potential buyers deserve to know what they're getting. I get the cute, roll-your-eyes humor ("Yeah yeah, men don't know anything about women").
It'll probably make a cute gift (like "Haha, OK, hookay, very funny, now let me just put this book in the shelf to gather dust").
The waste of trees (120 pages) is quite regrettable, though. We get that men don't get women already. On the other hand, maybe men REALLY don't get women, because I can't "get" that any person will buy something like this.
That said, I think Alan Francis is a genius. The fact that she recognizes this opportunity and capitalize on it--that's something everybody can learn from--so extra one star for this book.
Riveting!!.......2005-09-17
A must read! This book has changed my life. If only I had had it during my first marriage--Dr Francis has written a profoundly insightful work in an immmensely readable style. I recommend it to anyone interested in better understanding the relationship between men and women.
Brilliant.......2004-08-14
Dr Francis is the only scholar who tempts me to use superlatives. His magnum opus is a masterpiece of writing, and, I would suggest, of humanity. Rarely has a writer captured the essence of a subject so profoundly. In comparing it with other masterworks, it reigns supreme. One can only wish deserving works such as _Gravity's Rainbow_ were written by Dr Francis instead. On a more personal note, while slightly overwhelmed by the author's staggering intellect, what I have gleaned from this tome of knowledge has helped me to understand and appreciate the fairer sex to a degree which dwarfs my past acumen.
Hilarious Gag Gift!.......2003-09-24
I -highly- reccomend this book for every library, especially if you have a sense of humor... I loved it, as did my fiancee! Trust me, you'll never regret getting this book, though I suggest throwing it on with a big order so you don't have to pay for shipping. Other than that, GET IT!

Customer Reviews:
The Best Tractor Pull Yet - Advice from Dads.......2004-05-21
Much like the advice from the "This Old House" series, the joy of finding written (rather than oral) lessons from Dads to the next generation of sons as promised by the author could not be a greater gift for Father's Day than to share the wisdom of the ages through the best and the worst advice children ever received from their dads. How natural a life passage by making it possible for all young lads to elevate themselves to the heights of living and to help them focus upon what is important in life, from one who has been there. Because there are all kinds of dads as much as there are all kinds of children, these reflections on living are welcome to every generation, and far beyond, and perhaps they are necessary in days where work continues to demand so much of our time. Posterity doesn't happen by accident, and kids need to know that too.
Everything I know about women I learned from my tractor.......2004-03-12
I currently have only one wife, yet have been tractorless for several years. The reading of most of Capt'n Nebraska's books will point out the error of this in the pursuit of a balanced life style.
Ode To The Out House inspired me to buy a shovel...the "Tractor Series" gave a finishing touch to the questions I've sought answered since puberty.
I plan one day, to make the pilgrimage to Dannebrog, NE [the home of Roger Welsch] to bask in the shadow of greatness, see the Liar's Hall...and hope for free lunch at the tavern.
Rog - I miss the tractor stories!.......2002-10-16
If you are looking for another collection of Roger's wonderful tractor stories, you will be disappointed. BUT, that's OK, because this isn't a book about tractors. This is a book about guy's who like stuff like tractors trying to understand the gals who don't like stuff like tractors (as much as they do). I did miss the tractors, but when he gives "real-life" examples of what he has learned about women, his usual wry sense of humor and terrific story telling ability comes through, and I was sad to reach the last page. If what you are looking for is a relationship book your tractor man might actually read and understand, ladies, this is the one. Guys, if you are looking for someone who understands the ups and downs of living with women (or trying to), and has some advice on how to cope with our strange behavior, here it is. And this is coming from a woman who would rather the tricks we learn in Woman School remain shrouded in mystery! I'm sure my beloved tractor nut, for whom I purchased this book, will spend hours laughing over Roger's theories.

Book Description
An unqualified international best-seller, whose success proves without a doubt that what unites humanity is the ongoing and neverending communications gap between women and men. This blank book has been bought by therapists to give as an icebreaker in marriage therapy, by young women who offer it with a wink to their boyfriends, and by older women who have seen enough of men to know that almost any male is an excellent candidate for appreciating this work.

Everything Men Know..........2007-09-12
Funny. I saw it near the checkout counter while waiting in line at a bookstore and it made me laugh. When I brought it home, it made others (of both genders) laugh.
As for it being a waste of valuable resources...well you can use it as a notebook--in which case what men know about women will become some random blabber you jotted down.
I don't imagine this "book" was put together as an insult. It is not so deep as to try and convey hatred or other negative feelings. It is a joke.
Great for the Bookshelf.......2007-02-21
I leave a copy of this in my bookshelf and when friends are looking over my books (mostly real estate, financial planning, investing, self-improvement, etc) they almost always pull this one out with a very inquisitive, "AH HA !" It's very much worth having one in your bookshelf too; always worth a laugh.
So it won't win the Pulitzer, it's still pretty amusing.......2006-07-05
I bought this book recently as a gift for an unreconstructed male chauvinist who frowned at me...until he got the joke. I saw this item has been released in many foreign languages such as Italian, Spanish, Gaelic and Yiddish, so I guess men and women are the same all over the world. Which seems to me to be a good thing these days.
You get what you pay for..........2006-03-22
The whole point is that it is not really a book ... this is a great marketing idea (c'mon, dont you wish YOU thought of this ... 350,000 copies!). It costs about the same as a greeting card and is meant to either make a point or get a laugh. There was a previous variation on this idea awhile back in the form of "The Wit and Wisdom of Spiro T Agnew" (Nixon's Vice President who resigned after being charged with tax evasion and taking bribes)
Confucious say: he who laughs last didn't get joke! Unfortunately for a few, it cost them $4.95 to find out!
Not funny.......2005-02-04
This joke, and this kind of joke, ceased being funny a long time ago. When does the hatred and contempt stop?
