5 out of 5 stars A GOOD START FOR BEGINNERS.......2000-07-09

This is one of two books which I would always recommend for beginners. There is a well prepared questionaire that lets you know if futures trading is for you or not. It helps to bring a lot of basic concepts about the market, choosing a broker, CTA etc. down to a simple easy understandable way.

Even experienced traders would find it quite helpful, especially the section that deals with the overview of several markets. This is really useful material in deciding on which markets to trade and their particular tendencies.

2 out of 5 stars Not terribly well-written........1999-09-05

The book provides some useful information, but is written in such a way that the novice will find impossible to follow. The introductory chapters are particularly atrocious, and plunged right into the middle of things without so much as defining the terms and explaining the basic concepts.

But for someone who already knows the basics of futures trading, this can be a useful summary of the various markets.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Summary of a Complex Subject.......1999-07-27

I bought this book when I was deciding on whether or not to get started in futures trading. I was not disappointed. Wasendorf & McCafferty clearly walk through the process of trading futures in enough detail to help you understand what its all about but the book is not overly full of jargon or complex snooze producing theory. Might be a bit too simple for very experienced traders but on the whole a great read.

5 out of 5 stars An exellent book........1999-05-30

If you are looking to begin trading in the commodity futures market, get this book. It is the best that I've seen on the subject. It is very clear and well written. Take notes as you read it. Start trading on paper and use this as a reference for a few months and you'll be ready

5 out of 5 stars Overall excellent and well written book for the buck.......1999-04-15

This is a very good book for anyone interested in the futures market...now that I'm an active trader, I still refer to it often!

1 out of 5 stars There are better books out there!.......2007-10-04

This book wastes no time diving into all kinds of concepts without explaining them first. Actually, this is a problem I have found with a lot of books on options -- they assume the reader is already versed in the concepts before even explaining them. The author covers a lot of the different strategies -- but I wish he would have gone into more detail.

    1 out of 5 stars A book to avoid.......2007-07-25

I bought this book to start learning more about options trading. It claims to be "The Easy Way To Get Started" and provide a "clear, no-nonsense explanation" of options.

However by the 2nd and 3rd page I was struggling to understand what the author was writing. All his points are convoluted and he always seems to get distracted or go off on some other idea.

It's an incredibly difficult book to read and never gets easier because from the very beginning because the author fails to clearly lay out the basic concepts and terminology. Instead of simplifying the terminology, the author almost tries to confuse the reader which such lines as "A put has intrinsic value when its strike price is about the current price of the underlying contract" (pg. 10)

The writing is about the theory not the practice. Even when the author tries to provide a "concrete example" it's very difficult to follow.

This is a book to avoid and I regret wasting the money on it.

With its in-depth coverage of the basics of options and option trading, this new edition is perfect for beginners as well as traders going to the next level.

    It provides:

All About Options is the clearest, easiest-to-follow guidebook today on the pros, cons, risks, and rewards of using options.

    Download Description

This book was originally published by Probus in 1993; McCafferty was one of two original authors. Since the time that this book was written, there have been many changes in the options market: more advanced options software, new research in options pricing, and greater volume and volatility. This book covers all the basics of options and option trading for the beginner, including: how options work, strategies, volatility and price models, implementing a trading plan, selecting a broker, and mistakes beginners commonly make. The first edition concentrated on options on futures. The revised edition will update all the material in the book, reflecting the changes in the marketplace and technology. The author will aslo add much new material about options on stocks, which is not covered well in the first edition. The appendices will also be updated, with new sources of information, updated charts, new options offered, and new options software.

1 out of 5 stars All About Options.......2007-05-08

McCafferty may be a trader, but he's no writer. The book is like a cascade of thoughts and knowledge with no organization. Here's a thought, if I want to learn about futures, I'll look for a book called "All About Futures". Poor math aside, instead of babbling on about Deltas and Offset strategies in the first chapter, how about telling me how to read a quote, and where to go to get them. The cover says "The best software programs for hedging or speculating". In fifteen pages of "info" he happens to mention ONE fairly specialized software program. After learning all of the fundamentals of Options and Options trading, I might find value in some of the points in this book, but by then I'm sure I will have found one with a much less confusing approach.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the paper it's printed on. The publisher should let this expire worthless........2007-04-22

I was introduced to options with this book around 1999. As I tried to read it again today 8 years later with much gained experience I realized how poorly written and edited this book is. I'm sure it's not the editor's fault as they are most likely not familiar with derivatives. Even the basics of options are botched in this poor excuse of a book. The author emphasizes that you be clear in communication with your broker when taking/offsetting positions. How ironic. The author is not even capable of basic math. 5000 x $.01 = $500? or 5000 x $.02 = $1000? Sad. The product of our American public school system? Don't bother and look elsewhere. You'd be hard pressed to find anything more poorly written than this.

1 out of 5 stars Thorough, yet opaque.......2004-07-12

Mr. McCafferty's book seeks to provide a comprehensive review of options trading, and it is filled with what could be helpful and illustrative examples. Unfortunately, it suffers from a lack of editing. This means, for instance, that many of the examples appear to have incorrect math, as compared to the written description of how they are supposed to work. This can leave the reader confused as to which is correct.

Similarly, because the details of the basic groundwork are partly contradictory, the reader is left with less confidence as the book becomes more complex.

This is a great book for someone who is already comfortable with the basics of options, but if you are looking for an introductory text on options, try "Options for Dummies" or a similar book.

5 out of 5 stars Great place to start.......2004-05-27

I don't know what the other reviewers were thinking. This is the best book I have read yet (and I have read quite a few) to give you a very clear understanding of the options market and how to play it. I highly recommend it as a great place to start if you ever thought about getting into it.

1 out of 5 stars Most poorly written book in Finance.......2003-09-24

I read hundreds of books and never write reviews. This book is so poorly written that I was compelled to write this review.

If you just read the first 5 pages of the book, you will get an idea how poor a writer its author is. The first chapter is about basics of Options. However, even for someone like me who is experienced in stock trading, it was most confusing.

I dont know how to get a refund for this aweful book but I will stay away from any books written by this author and its publisher for publsihing this junk.

1 out of 5 stars Trying to cover too much in a very thin book.......1998-08-02

      Caution newcomers to options trading:

This book tries to cover the wide field of both futures and stock option trading in under 200 pages. There is no step-by-step explanation of the mechanics of option trading that a newby to option trading will require. If you have the financial resources to even consider options trading, you can afford to spend a few dollars extra and buy the classic "Options as a Strategic Investment" by Lawrence McMillan. There are good reasons why this book sold over 100,000 copies. As a newcomer to options I found its approach far more methodical and understandable than "All about Options from the Inside Out", which will be retired to a remote corner of my library.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Skype add-ons and tweaks to get to to work the way you want.......2006-04-20

Skype is a simple to implement Voice Over IP (VOIP) solution for the average computer user. If you are tired of long-distance charges, want to be able to tell when someone is online and you can call them, chat in a secure, encrypted environment, engage in video chatting with others, or call someone who has a regular phone system at substantially reduced rates then Skype may be the product you need. This book covers installation, configuration, and basic usage as well as configuring advanced features and personalizing your Skype. While this is useful, I found the software to be so user friendly that it was easy to figure out most of this by just exploring the basic options of the system. That being said Chapters seven and eight were well worth the price of the book by themselves. These chapters cover software and hardware add-ons that can greatly enhance your Skype system and make it work the way you would like it to. The final two sections of the book cover setting up Skype in a business environment and writing custom interfaces to it by accessing the Skype API. This section includes important information on how to set up Skype behind a firewall. Skype Me is a highly recommended purchase and a great way to access the VOIP world for anyone with a computer and good Internet access speed.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Skype book.......2006-03-13

Skype Me! is the perfect introduction to Skype for users of all skill levels. It could serve as an example of how to write a product-centric book that delivers real value. The text is well written, clear, and focused. The material becomes progressively complex as the reader moves from learning about Skype, to installing it, to using it, to extending it into areas I hadn't previously considered. Anyone who wants to get the most out of Skype should read Skype Me!

I believe Skype is an incredibly intuitive and simple piece of software. I didn't spend much time with the first four chapters of the book, since I think the ease of installing and using Skype is one of its main attractions. Beginning with Ch 5, however, author Michael Gough started expanding my sense of what could be done by Skype. With advanced features in Ch 6, software add-ons in Ch 7, and hardware accessories in Ch 8, I was entering new territory. The material was well-covered.

I have no real concerns with Skype Me! I have a minor issue with the author's suggestion on p 270 that using a 900 MHz cordless phone is a sign they need to be "upgraded". A 900 MHz cordless phone is a great way to avoid interference in the 2.4 GHz range used by modern wireless networks and newer cordless phones. I would have also liked some expert commentary by a security professional regarding controlling Skype in the enterprise.

Overall I highly recommend Skype Me! I would feel comfortable sharing this book with my parents as a way to encourage them to try Skype. I would also share it with friends who want to tinker at the edges of traditional Skype usage.

5 out of 5 stars The Skype Book Everyone Needs to Read.......2006-03-10

Skype Me! is a book that everyone needs to have. It's less technical than Skype Hacks, which makes it more accessible to non-techies. Gough starts off with basic lessons about VoIP, Peer-to-peer technology (as it's used in VoIP), even Skype security. These basics will help anyone who is looking at setting up Skype in their home.

Installation is covered in Chapter 2. Gough gives detailed instructions on testing individual computers setups to make sure that Skype will work properly, and shows how to install Skype on Windows, Pocket PC, Mac OS X, and Linux. Then, in chapter 3, he covers the basics of using Skype.

Gough spends a lot of time on using Skype from Pocket PCs, even Pocket PC cell phones and smart phones. This is something I'd never thought about, honestly - my cell phone bill is pretty small, and we've got a good family plan. I can see where people who use a lot of cell phone minutes each month could save some money.

Skype Me! also goes into detail when it comes to implementing Skype in a business setting. This is one area where I think that Skype is being under-utilized. There's a perception that Skype is for home users, but isn't powerful enough for enterprise use, but it's clear that Skype is a lot more powerful than people think. There's a lot of potential for business use - especially when you look at the call center hack that I mentioned in the review of Skype Hacks.

One disappointment I had with Skype Hacks was that it didn't really talk much about the Skype API. Skype Me! does this in chapter 14, and goes into enough detail that people with a computer background will be able to take advantage of the API in customizing their own installation of Skype. Skype Me! also goes into more detail in discussing the various Skype-enabled devices that are available, or will soon become available. Gough includes mini-reviews of a lot of popular Skype hardware add-ons that will make your Skype experience much more pleasant - and productive.

For new users, Skype Me! is a valuable addition to their library. The fact that Michael Gough is the guy who runs SkypeTips.com and is constantly adding material at that site is just another reason to get this book.

            5 out of 5 stars Bye-Bye Phone Company!.......2006-02-10

"Skype Me" is an excellent book for both beginners and advanced users of this free Voice over IP (VoIP) application. With easy instructions for downloading, installing, and using on any system, Skype is remarkably effective, but simple. It allows you to talk by voice in computer-to-computer conversations, conferencing, and even video capabilities with the necessary security features to protect your conversations.
This "family and friends" phone plan could put the phone companies out of business - except to bring us the DSL line. I've seen my wife use Skype to conference with her local partner and their Australian customer.
While basics are great, there's plenty here for the more advanced users including using Skype with other hardware and software (eg, wireless devices like cell phones). The authors also walk you through the security aspects of Skype - absolutely necessary these days.
Overall, a great book to own and keep handy as a reference for expanding your cyber knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Skype from beginning to advanced.......2006-01-26

This is an excellent walkthrough of Skype all the way from getting started to using special phones and other VoIP appliances. I'm impressed by the depth of the coverage, and the quality of the writing. This is easily the best book I've seen on Skype.

This book really hits home. It covers the entire investment process and presents the information in a very usable format. Topics range from the elements of self-evaluation and asset allocation, to the use of investment screens and virtual portfolios to gain experience before using actual funds. The author has included information on using the Internet as a research tool, as well as tables, templates, charts and a great glossary. All this and it's interesting and fun to read! I highly recommend buying this book if you want to take control of your investment future. I especially liked the spiral binding that made using the book as pleasurable as reading it.
