Book Description
"An impressive, accessible, up-to-date, and sometimes exhilarating study of the free-market warriors who make up the international trading community."
-- Financial Times
A Million A Million is the inside story of the mysterious and wildly influential world of trading. In our interconnected global markets, traders have become the frontline, free-market warriors closest to the money, closest to the action. Their reactions to world events can topple governments and cause currencies to rise or plummet. They affect the prices we pay for the food we eat, the gasoline we use, the gold in our jewelry, the steel in our cars, even our homes and our mortgages.
Hillary Davis, a former portfolio manager, shows us who these people are, what motivates them, and how they came to be so powerful. And of course she provides compelling insights into the work they do and how they do it.
Based in part on firsthand interviews with superstars in New York and London, A Million A Million gives readers a special opportunity to learn from the candid observations of Leo Melamed, Michael Bloomberg, Muriel Siebert, Bob Mnuchin, David Shaw, Stanley Shopkorn, Eric Sheinbergm Bill Johnston, Gary Lapayover, and many others.
A Million A Million also offers readers a context for understanding today's markets, with a fascinating account of the rise of trading, the evolution of the markets, and the challenges of today's complex, lightning-fast trading environment, as well as a provocative vision of a virtual-reality trading future.
Throughout this revelatory book, you will meet the criminals and the geniuses, the celebrity traders and the newbies, the women traders who "crashed the party," the visionaries, and the larger-than-life personalities. In all, you'll find an exciting portrait of a unique culture that profoundly affects our world.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating read.......2000-04-16
My biggest complaint with most books like this is that they are boring to read because they go on and on with long explanations that lose the point somewhere along the way.I loved this book and was pleasantly surprised. There was no time to get bored. The author moved easily from topic to topic. Her observations were not run of the mill, but were sharp and fascinating. The characters came to life. The book's approach is more like an economic look at the world of trading and its implications rather than a recipe book for how to trade. But as the author said, you can't learn to trade from a 'how to trade book' anyway. If you could, people wouldn't get paid so much to do it.I'd recommend this book very highly.
Breezy, superficial, insubstantive and overly adoring.......2000-04-03
I wanted to like this book, and held out high hopes through the first several chapters. It's real flaw is in its lack of substance. Perhaps the editors or Ms. Davis feared losing readers in overly technical explanations of complex trades, but I believe there is a middle ground which was not even approached. I was also dismayed with the chapter on women in the business--not a single profile of a woman attempting to balance a high powered career with family. As a group, the individuals (men and women) come across as smug, self-satisfied and self-centered (the section where she writes about their charitable work is as fawning as it is laughable). But what this book really needed was more meat--more about programmed trading, the chartists, the value traders, derivatives, day traders, etc.
Trader as Savior.......1999-08-13
Ms. Davis might not stretch to say traders are saviors but she almost deifies them with her genuinely affectionate portrayals here. She's intent on redeeming the profession (as if it needs redeeming--it doesn't), which she imagines the Average Joe scorns and vilifies. I bet the Average Joe pays little attention to hyperactive market makers, compared to the time spent fretting over his or her own investments. Still, Ms. Davis assures us that for every rogue trader like Nick Leeson (who brought down the British Bank, Barings) or Mike Milken (wait, Mike is NOT a crook, she corrects, notwithstanding the criminal charges), there are scads of other, brilliant, hardworking people--possessed of traits you and I could only wish to have--who lubricate the capital markets and provide the fuel for growth. In other words, she's a proselytizing apologist: by compensating she overstates. If you're not in the financial business, you might find this breezy book an acceptable companion at martini time, if you're someone who will gaze in amazement at the hue of a cocktail olive. She's oddly cozy and deferential with her subjects, like a mistress. More like it, the traders are friends whom she has no desire to offend, or perhaps she plans to approach them for future employment. The trouble is, the topic cries out for a critical eye. For those who take investments seriously the text is a great failure, totally lacking in specifics, or even anecdotes that might illuminate. Imagine a cook book that attempts to describe the taste of the recipes without listing any ingredients and you'll understand the problem with "A Million A Minute." Ms. Davis, your readers can take more. A truly entertaining book (and with more meat) is Michael Lewis' "Liar's Poker" and "Pit Bull" by Martin Schwartz. Mr. Schwartz, especially, is a man who has traded for years, who can share his secrets (successes and failures) and who can live to tell about it!
Excellent.......1999-01-19
Finally! A serious, in depth, intellectual business/finance book written by a woman! Bravo! I really liked this book. It gets into everything - the history of trading, how people's minds work, it delves into derivatives, currency trading, internet trading - in short, it was a fascinating read. I'll be looking for her next book.
Some interesting stories & comments, but largely ineffective.......1998-12-11
When I scanned this book initially I was encouraged by the authors last chapter discussion about how the internet transformed trading as we know it today, empowering everyone/anyone to be a trader. After buying and reading it I was disappointed. Except for a few interesting pieces, (like how barings bank became bankrupt), the rest of the stories were uninteresting and did not keep my attention. Too much attempts were made to gloss up the interviews with these super traders. The author would even describe in great detail the furnishings of the traders offices, etc. In the first chapter, was interesting to read how traders move such great sums of money (a million a minute), but the author kept repeating this topic over and over. Finally the book consisted too little substance and not enough practical information for the average investor. If you want to read about the lifestyles of the Wall ST. traders, this book might be for you, but if you're looking for practical and useful information to help you in your trading, look elsewhere.
Book Description
While television commercials often elicit groans from the viewer, they mean work for actors and can be the bread-and-butter backbone of an actor's career, providing a safety net of income while he or she climbs the ladder to greater success. And for those actors who achieve face-to-product recognition, commercial work can provide handsome residuals for years to come. While many books on the market include some information on commercial work, Acting in the Million Dollar Minute deals exclusively with the art and business of acting in commercials. Here the "art" is narrow: script terminology and procedure, commercial dialogue, camera staging, working the product, sample commercial scripts, and detailed analysis of how a commercial is actually shot; while the "business" side, reflecting the general industry, broadens to include training, photos, the resume, unions, actor-agency contracts, the interview, the screen test, callbacks, pay and working conditions, and a complete list of SAG and AFTRA offices. In this revised and updated edition, this book provides direction on how to: Decipher the meaning behind the commercial script; Begin and end every commercial performance; Get the auditioners' attention immediately when the camera begins rolling; Compel the auditioners, with the sheer force of your performance, to actually watch your playback tape; Take the camera from another actor (i.e. upstaging); Give the director a performance that makes his or her job easier in the editing room.

Full of information that isnt exposed elsewhere.......2007-10-12
The Book is wonderful. Mr. Logan is quite the character. His information is vital for us actors who want to land the job the first time. I highly recommend this book and his other one. This book was madatory for us to read in my acting school and I am glad I did.
Sensational, practical, funny and well done!.......2006-04-28
This is one of those rare books I had to read cover to cover ... Tom's insights from the director's chair on how to be a successful commercial actor are well-delivered. This book is also one of the funniest books I've ever read in my life... Logan's sense of humor kept me laughing (and learning!) from start to finish.
Very practical mechanics, imagery and pacing for how to be successful in acting for commercials .... one of the most memorable, and useful books, I've read in recent years.
Well written - and very useful!

An excellent insider's guide.......2005-08-08
Tom Logan's Acting In The Million Dollar Minute: The Art Of Acting In Television Commercials presents the screen writer/director's experiences with commercial acting. Thousands of comments from hundreds of casting directors, directors and producers are synthesized under one cover, with advice ranging from how to handle accents, dialogue and product names to common complaints about commercial actors. An excellent insider's guide.
The best book I've read for aspiring commercial actors........1999-03-06
This is an extremely helpful book for anyone who is interested in acting in commercials. It tells you how to get into the business, and how to succeed. I read this 10 years ago, along with Mr. Logan's other book, "How to Act and Eat at the Same Time", and parlayed the information into a successful career in commercials. I have reccomended this book to many aspiring actors, and have given it to others.

Book Description
Written for New Yorkers (and other people) who don't have time to read and don't like lugging around heavy books, Heather Holland Wheaton's Eight Million Stories in a New York Minute is a collection of über-short stories printed in a book small enough to slip into a hip pocket without making an unsightly bulge.
Each story (less than 300 words) can be read independently while waiting on line at the deli, for the elevator to get to the lobby, and for the train to be moving shortlyor the collection can be read as a whole with the tales turning into connected layers of fine New York dirt.
Either way, the stories are addictive.
Wheaton's jazzy writing playfully taps into the contemporary New York zeitgeist with wit and whimsy, but makes no apologies for poking fun at the city's squishy underbelly of obsessions, neurosis, and unattainable desires. In these keenly realized tales, we find security guards that secretly paint watercolors on duty, men that order Chinese food to their ex-girlfriend's apartments, and children that watch the rats in Central Park.

More of an exercise than real literature.......2004-07-13
I have a great appreciation for short literature, but stories should have conflicts with resolutions that matter, characters that leave impressions, and climaxes. Ideally. The stories should also be written with correct grammar. Minimally. These stories lack all of the above. This collection reads like a series of assignments given to high school creative writing classes. Most of these stories are just a good start, but not a satisfying finish. The characters don't ring true in some stories; in others, they just don't have enough depth. Ultimately, it's a short, easy to carry text but a frustrating, irksome read.
Little Golden Book for Adults.......2004-01-13
This physically small, saddle-stitched book contains not-so-much stories as story beginnings that are about 400 words long. Instead of fleshed out stories, this tiny book presents about 40 well-written, New York-based vignettes that tug at the corners of the imagination.
A Fly in your Matzoh Ball Soup!.......2003-06-12
Slices of Life Pie. Snippets of urban culture, set in the greatest city in the world!
This little gem fullfills my voyeuristic fantasy of being a fly on the wall, or a fly in the matzoh ball soup of everyday New Yorkers. Ms. Wheaton has such a knack for capturing the idiosynchrasies of her characters, and the most minutae of details, that you'd swear you know some of these people.
People who love or loathe this city for whatever reason.
I chuckled a few times out loud on the A train home while absorbed in their lives.
The best part of some these not so simple short stories (after all, life is complex!), is that they don't always have an ending. You can use your imagination to fill in the blanks, as I do, wandering around manhattan, mulling the millions of lives that are so randomly planted in this multi cultural mecca. I catch up weekly by going to the authors website and reading more new stories posted every week! Who says nothing in life is free? You gotta go there! ...
44 Quirky Delights In A New York Minute.......2003-06-07
This series of stories captures beautifully that chance interrelatedness that is at the heart of New York City life. How we bump into and bounce off of each other, on the streets, in delis, in bookstores, on sidewalks bursting with the history of all those other chance encounters of countless others around us. (Yeah, I know that sounds like I'm pretentious critic wannabe - bear with me, this is one of those epiphany moments). A friend gave me a copy of the book and I was charmed by the concept - stories you could read while waiting in line at an ATM or for a parking space. Initially I read the stories randomly. But, one night, I read them sequentially and it was then I fully appreciated the funky beauty of all the encounters and how the characters and events were interconnected. The stories are well-written, engaging, and a wonderful validation of that saying about good things coming in small packages. Or was it don't judge a book by its little cover?
I've now bought several copies to give to friends.
I haven't seen it since.......2003-05-25
I added this book to a recent order so I could get free shipping. I figured for $, I could sit still long enough to read stories about New Yorkers written by a New Yorker. When it came to the office, I opened it up first. It's a cute little book. I read the first story (2 minutes tops), and then the next and the next. It's sharp and slick - and after I spent the first part of my day reading it cover to cover, I lent it to my boss with post its on my favorite pages. I'm back here to order more because I gave it to her, and I haven;t seen it since.
